Got this phone - Gmail problem - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

L29 3gb version...no software updates outside the box. using with AT&T.
Gmail notifications only come when the phone is unlocked. No options allow me to keep gmail awake. Even when disabling gmail and downloading outlook, same issue.
Is there a fix for this? it seems to happen randomly.

Exchange services keeps crashing.

I get the error "unfortunately exchange services has stopped working" every so often on my Nexus 5. I am rooted but on stock. I also disabled the email app. I cleared data on the email app as well. Anyone else running into this issue?

I had the same issue. Go into settings > applications > all applications.. and disable Exchange Services as well. It has the same icon as the email app. That fixed it for me.

That is really not a fix. Its a workaround. Mine is doing that as well... not sure why... i disabled mine since i not connected to any exchange servers but to those who are... this really doesn't fix anything for them
I have this issue constantly, I have my hotmail email address set up and it uses this. If I disable exchange services I can no longer receive emails but with it on I get crashes sometimes every 2 seconds. It will crash again faster than I can send the error report.

Do we have solution for this yet?
Android update to 4.4.2 also didn't help solving this issue. One thing to note is, this is happening only if the Email exchange services are of 6.1 version, i have checked on another Nexus 4 having 4.4 which has 6.0 (exchange service).
There is no problem with 6.1.
Looks like a calendar problem
I have the same problem with 6.1 exchange services. But so far the contacts are sync with the hotmail account, it's only the calendar that throws the error box.
Its quiet annoying that you use the best devices in the market and one small service application can make it look all bad.
4.4.3 still no fix
I had called Google toll free and had registered a ticket for this problem. I was told that the 4.4.3 update will fix the problem of exchange 6.1.
Got the update today.. Nothing has changed.. guys only thing is to now change the device.

no notifications for Gmail

Since Lollipop upgrade I do not receive notifications for every new email I receive. There no longer seems to be a setting for Push notification in the mail settings but there is a setting 'receive notification for every new mail' and I have checked that in each (3) Gmail account I have. None of them work! I checked Sync settings in all accounts and it is set to on as well for each. Possibly this is a Sync issue Google is having?
Unlike other threads about 'silent mode', I want to hear that I have an email as soon as I get one! I have Notifications set to 'ALL.'
I have the exact same issue. I tried rebooting, clearing gmail data and cache, turning off sync and back on again, turning gmail sync off and on again etc etc.
Only thing I haven't tried is removing the google account and re-adding.
Not sure if this is a coincidence but I noticed it wasn't working after I installed Nine for exchange emails.
Gmail app has always only been push. There's never been an option to not push.
If you have inbox installed, that may tale over notifications - which by default doesn't notify for every bundle.
Otherwise after an upgrade, maybe a factory reset is required.
No interference from "nine" here.
It isn't pushing. I have to manually refresh to force the Inbox in the Gmail App to sync/refresh. I am getting no email notifications at all for 3 separate Google Accounts. I only use the stock Gmail App, nothing else. It was working fine on 4.4, not so much on 5.0. I expect when there are updates for there to be issues. I would find it hard to believe I am the only one. I hope others will see this thread and something is figured out.

Pushing and notifications are 2 different things. So what you actually mean is its not syncing?
Anyway advice still stands, may need to wipe

Yes and by not syncing I am not getting notifications. Calendar seems to work. I get notifications from the calendar. I don't get them from Gmail. It is reporting a sync error in the account settings. Data wipe isn't cool but I guess it is all backed up in the cloud.
I fixed it by removing my Google account from settings, accounts. All good now no reset required

OK Glad you fixed it, however I'm still hazy on the problem
Syncing = delivering messages to your phone via PUSH
Notification = Once delivered, notifying you
So it was syncing and new emails were appearing in the app, but you weren't getting the notification only?
I removed all accounts and added them back. It was also effecting Hangout messages. Everything appears to be working as it should!
The symptom that I noticed was not receiving a notification when I sent myself a test email. The cause of that was in fact a problem with Sync. When I opened Gmail the test message I sent myself was not there unless I manually refreshed. Obviously if it is not Syncing then you don't get a notification, the only part I noticed right off the bat. I was also being sent Hangout messages and not getting notice of them. Again launching the app forced it to refresh.

Gmail sync problems

I bought Moto G 2015 three weeks ago, and phone has been upgraded to MM on first day of use.
I used Galaxy S3 for many years before and never had gmail sync problems, but now I have.
The problem appears in no push message that I have new gmail emails. Only when I open Gmail app or sync manually, I can see new emails.
I have many apps installed, such as Viber, Facebook Messenger, Mail.ru (another email client), all messages from them are recieved immediately. The problem is only with Google.
Does anyone have the same problem? Is there some solution of this? All that could be done was done. I loose all hope to fix it.

For some stupid reason this is the default behavior of Gmail...
Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Google and turn the slider on for Gmail, should be good after that. Sometimes have to press the overflow menu and select "Sync Now" to sort of jump start it.

Of course I have Gmail slider on all time.
I send email from PC to myself and CC to my wife -- wife's phone notifies about new email immediatelly, but my moto G can keeps silence for many hours (or days?).

Had to ask... Many people have noted that is off by default, depends how you setup your device in the wizard.
I assume you have cleared caches, cleared data on Gmail, tried removing updates and reinstalling them, etc?

Yes, I did all of this abovementioned things.
I just added gmail account to another email client (mail.ru), and tried to send several emails to myself -- notifications come momentally!
It turns out that is someting wrong with gmail app? But the same version works good on wife's phone.
I've had this issue intermittently as well. It did not occur with 5.1.1. Seems to be a bug introduced with Marshmallow. I cleared the data of the Gmail app and that seems to have mostly cured it for now.
bug or feature? i had the same issue...
a battery saver function seems to be the culprit for me
settings > battery > menu > battery optimization
turn optimization off for gmail
it went back to getting mail that shows up in the middle of the nite
[i turned the battery saver off and still get good life
but i'm not using the phone for much now...]
I cleared cache of gmail, rolled back to firmware version, turned off battery optimization for gmail -- nothing helps me.
But yesterday I installed many others email clients, which work with gmail -- EVERY of them notifies about new emails monentally, but not gmail. And EVERY of them has battery optimization turned on..
Could this be related to Doze mode? When in Doze mode synchronizations are "dozed" and can be delayed up to 30 minutes, typically 5-10 though... Didn't even think of that

I send email to myself when phone is not in Doze mode, and there is no any notification. But others email clients work perfectly.

It seems that I resoved the problem!
Apps -- google play services -- manage data -- clear all data
Since I did this, I have every new email notification and sync! I tried to find solution all this time.
Battery optimization is on for gmail and all work as it should right now.
I hope.
Happiness was short. In a hour I send ti myself email and didn't receive notification. Went to google account sync settings and there was exclamation mark near gmail. Pressed to sync mannually and new email has come.
That's definitely problem with Google sync..
Nothing remains, but must install other email client.

[Nougat][bug] Double notification for gmail

Since I update my phone to android 7.0 I have this annoying bug.
When I enter the email from the notification bar, the icon remain there until I go back to the inbox list.
Any one know how to solve this?
I tried to delete the data of the gmail app, still the same.

Same here with s7 flat exynos.

Having the same issue. A way around this (for me) was to uninstall all updates for the gmail app in the Playstore. But as soon as I update again, the issue is back. I checked battery optimiziations, sync settings, cleared the cache...issue still remains. Did you find a fix for this?
No I didn't.
I did a factory reset and the problem gone, but when I updated the Gmail app, it back again..
Probably Google will fix this in some of the next updates.
Came here to report the same issue. T-Mobile S7
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 using XDA Labs
I've had this too since upgrading to Nougat.
Actually going into the app and making the item 'read' doesn't always remove the notification.
Try to disable samsung push service in package disabler app.

Also have this issue. Android won't allow me to disable Samsung Push Service. Force stopping the service didn't fix the problem either.
I'm having the same problem with Nougat on my S7. Very annoying
same problem for me, s7 edge... build NRD90M.G935FXXU1DQB7.
latest gmail app.
Use a different mail app?
I solved doing this:
- Remove all Google accounts.
- Clear data and cache of Google and GMail apps.
- Reinsert Google accounts.
Now i have a delayed notification problem yet...
Goto Settings - Notifications.
You most likely have Gmail AND Email defaulted to receive notifications. Extremely simple to fix, just uncheck one of the two. Problem fixed.

I have this problem too, Galaxy S7 Non-edge. I tried factory-resetting my phone and this problem is still there. I am only syncing Gmail and my Email is not sending notifications. Anyone else figure this out?
I received a software update to
G930FXXU1DQE7
And the bug solved.
Same issue on Galaxy S7 model G930V, firmware 930VVRU4BQG1

I don't always wish for email notifications but when I do, I want double.
This is annoying.. LOL

Unfortunately not, I switched to the Google Inbox app which works fine (but lacks the ability to swipe through mails).

gmail not pushing mail

So, ever since the N update on my S7 and now on the S8, my email doesn't push/sync right away at all anymore. I have to go into the email for it update. I'm not sure whyy it's doing this. I haven't set it up that way, have background data allowed, and don't have any battery saviors set up to do this...
Any ideas on this why this is happening?
Nougat's overly aggressive doze is the cause here. Fix: https://androidtutorial.net/2017/05/02/fix-delayed-push-notifications-galaxy-s8s8/
The option under Special Access you want to look at is Optimise battery Usage.
I have the same issue. I have gmail set so that it is NOT Optimized for battery. I still don't get gmail updates (and therefore no notification) until I open the app (usually). Sometimes I do get the notification soon after the email is sent to me. Rather random.
After messing around for a while, I think it is a no notification thing and not a lack of synchronizing the emails. If I send myself a gmail, I get no notification, but I can look in my google account and see where gmail has synchronized. Then I go to gmail and the message is there.
^yep, could be related...but how to resolve?

So, I solved it by going to the app manager and disabling the gmail app. Since it is a system app, it doesn't uninstall it, but reverts it back to some previous version. That version has been giving me the appropriate notifications for every email I have received since.
I think I will look at disabling updates for gmail for a while.

I deleted data for the app. That also fixed the problem (for now anyway)
This has been an ongoing issue for me for over a year. It was an issue on this phone, my S7 edge and Note7.
Often I will see an email on my phone, read and archive it, then go about my business. Several hours later I go into Gmail on my PC and that email is still sitting there, unread.
Actually sending out an email on the phone seems to make the sync update, but other actions like reading, moving, or deleting emails doesn't. I've had times where my emails were still unread on the Gmail website 12 hours after reading them on the phone. I have the app's battery optimization settings turned off, and I have even gone into the app several times during that period and pulled down to check for new messages. It's pretty awful that the sync has such serious issues and nobody is fixing it.
Deleting the app's updates doesn't work for me. It might fix the issue briefly, but it always comes back pretty quickly, even without any updates to the app.
The only thing that fixed the issue for me was installing an app called something like "Gmail Push Fixer". It worked wonders on my S7 edge. Unfortunately, the app requires root so it isn't an option on my Snapdragon S8+.
