Where to purchase the S7 unlocked? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm looking to purchase the S7 at full price without any catch. I was looking into T-Mobile but need to purchase a plan with the phone and needs to be activated for 40 days for them to unlock it.
Apparently US Cellular has the lowest price currently; are they known to lock bootloaders? I use Cricket so I only need a phone that uses AT&T network if I can't sim unlock it.

Cricket has finally added a banner to their website for the S7. No details yet if they will have them on launch day or not, price should be the same as anywhere. https://www.cricketwireless.com/samsung-galaxy-s7.html

you could try clove or handtec. ships from UK. I've done this for the xperia series before and they worked perfect on ATT. Clove has mention of samsung locking their phones since 2013 though. May want to read everything carefully and make sure you know what you're getting into. I really wanted to do this as well. I hate the ATT bloatware. ATT address book and yellow pages drive me insane!

New S4 for $330...Seems A Bargain

Just read on Androidpolice Cricket are offering a $200 rebate on the s4. So similar price to the Nexus 4
www.androidpolice.com/2013/06/08/de...laxy-s-iii-and-htc-one-sv-via-mail-in-rebate/
And there are great deals on other phones too. www.mycricket.com/cell-phones?cm_sp=hero-_-423-_-OOF_1
Sorry if this has already been posted
Almost jumped at the offer...but then I remembered Cricket wireless is a CDMA carrier and I want to use T-Mobile, so unless they're selling a factory unlocked phone it would be pointless for me to buy it.

CDMA is typically for US LTE vands. It's what Verizon/Sprint use, and basically it means the phone won't work on GSM netowrks (T-Mobile/AT&T). It's far more restrictive, and you can't just pop in a SIM card and use the phone as you wish.

There seems to be a couple of catches.
-The fine print says that you need to make two auto-bill payments to Cricket wireless, which depending on the plan you pick, is $70-100. It also means you must be on Cricket wireless service for 45 days before you can cancel and use the phone on another carrier, which if it's a CDMA phone, means no T-Mobile/AT&T.
-The rebate offer could be several months before you get it in the mail.

BestBuy / Sprint N5 comes with a locked SIM slot?

I am solving this as we speak, so I will update, but went to BB, bought the N5 (I have my reasons why I bought there, not from Play store)
The box states, software lock is in place to prevent the use with non-Sprint sim cards. Also Sprint brochure in box, and no pin-tray key in the box. In other words, the phone is packaged for Sprint specifically.
I bought it, I will call up Sprint and T-Mobile (which is who I want to use) and see what's up.
Anyone else has info?

Wow - can't imagine how they are doing that. Worst case scenario, I'd expect that you should be able to download the stock image from Google and flash it to remove any such lock

Can you please help me how to do that? This is my first Nexus. Thanks.
I really hope that being simlocked to Sprint doesn't affect Android updates down the line. It shouldn't, because it's technically not a "Sprint variant" of the phone, but you never know.

Wait till you get the phone. For all you know, it may be SIM unlocked like the version from the play store. For other phones like the S4, Sprint does have the 90 day requirement before unlocking it for use with International SIMs.
On the Nexus 5, hopefully, they haven't locked down the US bands (like they do with the S4 and other phones). The play store version is not locked.
The http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701 thread shows you how to flash the stock images - but again, no guarantees that it will do the trick till you actually try it out.
I didn't want to risk this, so I just bought from the play store. I asked the play store person if the phone was guaranteed to get timely updates direct from google, and he gave a "Phones purchased from the play store will get timely updates from google" response. I'm guessing it was a canned response, but I do hope that Sprint doesn't cripple the version sold by Sprint/Bestbuy etc.
That's pretty crappy. I'd return it.
No, Flashing the stock image will not remove the SIM lock. The SIM lock is stored in a different place.

Update
Sprint Tech Support confirmed the phone is locked. The problem is that they COULD unlock it, but the phone needs to be activated first. To activate the phone, I have to add it to a plan (a 2 year contract). Without that, they cannot do anything with a "cold" phone. Thus far I got nowhere .. the plan is definitely to return it if they do not budge.
I purchased mine from the Google play store as well.
Why would sprint sell it at a subsidized price of $150 or $50 for new customers without locking it to their network during your 2 year contract.
Also, I bet sprint will only unlock it for international use during the 2 year contract. Just like the iPhone and s4.

Well sure, I understand that with the subsidized phones, but I paid it up front - I paid the full $450 for a Nexus. I wanted an unlocked phone ... it's a bum deal.
I am trying to find out whether a friend of mine could activate it on his account, I get it unlocked, and then we re-activate his iPhone back ... not sure Sprint will go for it.
Ugh .. I just want a Nexus 5 you know? ... and this seemed like a fine way of getting it (My old Captivate died finally for good on Tuesday. and I do not really have $350 just siting around, so the $100 markup was my financing "cost" to get 18 month of payments (I have no interest financing through best buy; my other card has high interest .. it was not a bad financing plan). Ugh .. if only Sprint let me unlock it.
Returned it. will get the tmo version next week. i really wish the wait on play store was shorter. my phone is dead ... waiting is too painful.

I don't think Sprint has any clue what they are talking about. I had a 200 dollar BB giftcard so I went in tonight and purchased a "Sprint" N5 and I don't even have Sprint service Ran by the AT&T store and picked up a micro sim, popped it in and everything is working perfectly. The device is definitely not locked to Sprint. Full LTE data with AT&T without having to configure anything.

Yea I know I could have used the BB giftcard for something else but it meant I got a N5 for 250 plus tax out of pocket and I got it without having to wait! Love it so far and like I said everything works perfect. Android Central got the official word from Sprint and Google that their version is the exact same as the Play Store version. I trust them much more than some Sprint tech lol.

I am using one right now with my AT&T sim and everything is working. The device even has an imei number which Sprint phones usually do not have(or at least didn't used to when I had Sprint). They only made one version of the device for North America and it is compatible with Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T.
That is very strange. The T-Mobile did not work. Makes me sad.

S7 unlocked

I was wondering about retailers in the US that will sell the S7 unlocked from day 1 that aren't resellers on amazon/ebay. I know BestBuy sells unlocked phones now but I believe some of them are overpriced, and amazon/ebay resellers sometimes aren't trustworthy so I really don't want to deal with that extra hassle. Plus I need to buy it unlocked cause I'd like to try it for a couple weeks and sell it if I don't like it very much.

PhoneArena claims availability from the following:
AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular stores, Best Buy, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, Staples, Target and Walmart
If I'm not mistaken Best Buy is also available in Canada so maybe there. However Best Buy doesn't seem to be offering the S7 unlocked atm.

I don't think best buy Canada sells unlocked phones but I could be wrong... I'm on public mobile (telus) so I'll try to buy from telus or kodoo
I would love an unlocked one in a Canada also, but not holding my breath for that. I just assume Samsung will make us go through the carrier.
Now will Bell let me by one outright? That's what I'm wondering.

I read on Android Authority if I'm not mistaken the Samsung won't be selling unlocked phones directly.
DAMN! $899 from the carriers for the 32GB non-Edge.
I don't know if I can shell out over $1000 (with tax) for a carrier locked phone that gets OS updates 6 months late. Disappointed I won't be getting a new toy.
in canada we dont see unlocked phones because the big three dont like it. like the nexus 5 was sold unlocked for 399 and at fido for 500. (not sure about the price)
we are really screwed right now in canada. exchange rate is so bad. i think the S7 will be 249-299 on contract and the S7 plus 120$ more.
I called the Samsung store at Sherway Gardens in Toronto. The guy said, they DO sell unlocked phones. They are taking pre-orders and you have to go to the store for a deposit. It also comes with the free VR headset!
Certainly good news if you live close to a Samsung store. I wasn't expecting this.
So can I safely assume updates should hit these faster than carrier phones since they are straight from Samsung?

That's really lucky for you. I already asked BB about the unlocked version, they hinted it might be available when the phone is released but definitely not available for preorder meaning unless it's a carrier phone no way to take advantage of the preorder bonus, unfortunately there's no local Samsung store down here. If you do go and preorder the unlocked version at a Samsung Store, mind getting the prices for us please? (s7 and s7 edge).
Had an unlocked Note 5 from the Samsung store. I don't see why they would stop selling unlocked phones.

Purchase Options: Best Buy - Amazon - Samsung

I am interested in pre-ordering the Gear S3, but wanting to purchase it with some type of Warranty Plan similar to Buy Buy's Protect Plan. Best Buy, however, is no longer taking Pre-Orders so now I am trying to decide if I should wait for Best Buy or just go ahead with Amazon or Samsung. My wife and I both had Motorolla 360's Gen 1, hers with the Protect Plan mine without but luckily when she had the infamous back cracking she was able to return/exchange it.
Anyone have any thoughts on it? I am thinking waiting for Best Buy may be best, bit no ideas when they might carry stock again.
Brad
You can get a warranty from Square Trade. It's expensive, a claim will cost about 1/3 the price of the watch, but it is available.
Thanks, I do not have experience with Square Trade but that may be an option. I may wait until Best Buy stocks it considering how well they do support their warranty program.

They are out of stock now for the Frontier at least, I went to Best Buy yesterday and the Geek Squad guy didn't know when they would get more in stock.
To be clear, Best Buy has run out of their initial pre-order allotment of the S3 Frontier model and it is now showing as "coming soon" rather than having a pre-order button.
The S3 Classic is still available for pre-order, and is functionally identical to the Frontier. The difference is in the style and finish.
As has been mentioned previously, the Frontier LTE version will be available through cellular carriers.
@Dodge DeBoulet Yes, that is more accurate. I want both, considering my day job and my weekend fun but I believe the Frontier to be more universal.

I want the LTE version too, but Verizon is my provider. I can't get any information out of them as to whether they're even going to offer it. I may just end up going with the BT version if they don't announce something before 11/20.
I figure for the same price why not? So the major perk of the LTE device is you can make calls with the phone as well?
Still out of stock (This post claimed it was in stock 5 minutes ago because Best Buy let me put it into my cart, however removed it one I tried to pay for it)

I pre-ordered the non-LTE Frontier on Amazon for $349 and now it's $439. I have a suspicion my pre-order will be cancelled soon.
So, for those that are wondering whether or not Verizon will be carrying the LTE version of the S3 Frontier, I may be able to offer a ray of hope.

[AT&T] No Promos for Upgrading?

Was upgrading to the Note 10+ and saw the BOGO offer and also, if you order online, you get $150 Visa Gift card... After looking further, and calling AT&T Directly, I found out that those two promos only apply if you add a new line or are a new customer. Is that the same across the board with all carriers or just with AT&T?

Verizon was the same. Only the BOGO offer if you add a new line. And Verizon was only going to give me $400 trade-in for my S10+. I preordered through Best Buy and they gave me $600 for my trade-in. Preorder bonuses/gifts suck this time around.
My wife and I are both T users and we both were looking to upgrade - until all the details were released last night.
My prior phones were rooted while my Wife bought a phone from T. I have been debating if I still need a rooted phone or not. The main things the custom XDA roms provide me is availability to use AdBlocker, Hotspot, and of course access to the lastest ROMs and features at the sacrifice of getting the latest and greatest T CSC.
But now I see that the "5G' model is not available on T. It might come out later in the year. But it will locked to T. Getting a 5G phone was a good justification to upgrade even though there will NEVER be 5G service in the sticks where I live.
We think we will hold off for now.
