Samsung upgrade programme - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

I went for this and will upgrade present contract to a sim only deal. Overall it's a similar price to a 24/12 contract but I get the option to upgrade after a year. What do others think?

Did same in UK Samsung online, pretty happy overall . .getting the option to upgrade to the S8 when it arrives next March is a winner in my book
Oh and a free gear vr means i can sell my S6 with my innovator edition gear vr i had for my s6

Did exactly the same thing will switch to sim only on August when contract is up. Will save me about 200 pound over the two years instead off a two year contract and can upgrade to next Samsung next year . 27 is pounds a month and no network bloat . Can't wait till the 8th

Wish they had this in the states.

Same. If Apple can, why can't Samsung?

I thought this idea came from the states . Mabe they are trialing it here. Will put straight into a case as scratches are counted after the year. I emailed the re getting a gear vr as it was not stated on the email and here is my reply Thank you for contacting Samsung UK Online Shop.
We would like to confirm that all pre-orders placed on Samsung UK
Online Shop are eligible to receive the free Gear VR Lite headset.
The product will be added automatically to all pre-orders in a few days.
We remain at your disposal, might you need any further assistance.

So it's the vr lite which I guess is the latest consumer version.

I'm on Sprint here in the States and they have the Galaxy Forever plan which is like their iPhone Forever deal. You basically do the 24 month phone lease plan and after 12 months you can upgrade to the next Galaxy (S8 I would assume next year) or if you wanted a different brand etc you would need to wait the 24 months OR pay off the remaining year's worth of lease payments to swap early. So yah as long as you want the new Samsung replacing the S7 you would just give them the S7 and they would give you the new Galaxy phone. I guess the only difference would be that your charges may go up or down depending on the new phones monthly lease cost.

I went for this in the UK and I note this adds £84 on top of the sim free price of the Edge. About £3.50 a monthj
I have one year left of a 2 year contract and so I'll see what to do in January. I could end up paying off the Samsung S7 Edge and selling it and then taking out a new contract with whichever network to get the new phone.
One thing I couldn't tell, if I pay it off early do I save some interest?
I worked it out, it's £30 a month plus £15 or so for a sim only deal, so £45 all in - same price as a normal contract

In uk sim only deals usually 1/12 and not 24/12 so worth bering in mind as may be cheaper in a year.

I can't see it mentioned either, but as it seems similar to a lease there must be some early termination charge. Probably better off to speak to them directly as it isn't mentioned at all in their T&C's.
EDIT: Also it seems to be 14.9% APR interest

I'm definitely doing this. The contract on my S6E isn't up till March next year but by doing this I can sell my old Edge as part of payment for the remainder of my contract, then switch to a sim only plan next year. It's the only way I could do it without buying the phone outright. I can't see anyone beating Samsung for the next two years in terms of phones, besides the Nexus line. And besides, you don't have to upgrade to the S8 if you don't want to either. Can just continue your monthly payments as normal, so pretty much a no brainer.

I really wanted to do this. under £30 a month and an upgrade to the latest galaxy device after 12 months (providing you return the existing handset). Unfortunately, due to one late payment recorded on my credit file this year, Samsung have refused me

That's too bad! I think mobile contracts are easier to get than this type of credit, not sure though.
The only problem with upgrading after 12 months is that you sign another 24 months contract.

I generally have good credit but Samsung will not accept if there is even 1 late payment recorded on your credit file.
You do sign another 24 month contract but if you return the handset after 12 months, they wipe the remaining 12 months.

This still works out cheaper than my current contract . If I want to upgrade with Vodafone ots 56 a month for the exact same tariff . By buying the phone on the upgrade program even with the little bit of interest I'm still saving around 200 over the two years going sim only and this offer

It says you can make payments or pay off whenever if you paid it off in say 6 months you wouldn't then pay interest on the remains 18 months

I was thinking of taking the plunge doing the upgrade programme route, I usually buy the phone outright as I have a business sim card in the phone.
How's everyone finding the programme so far now it's been out for awhile?

Price?

Well I have read numerous sources saying it will be 199.99 with 2 Year Contract.. Now I am seeing receipts for 149.99 with contract or 299.99 without contract. I truly want this phone and the 50$ wont stop me, but hey it is 50$ more dollars for apps and accessories. Does anyone know if they price was changed or if I should bring in a picture of the receipts to get a 50$ off or will I just end up paying 200$?
AT&T and Samsung posted on their twitter that it is $199 with a contract, and $350 without a contract.
I'm hoping it is $350, cause that's how much money i got for it! haha.
Yah, but how are people getting it for 300 or 150?
I have no idea. I haven't seen any receipts and such.

and

Now I'm jealous. I hope it is $300 but i'll settle for $350!
haha yah I mean, paying an extra 50 really won't stop me. But hey, thats 50$'s I can use on accessories etc
I guarantee that it's 349.99 without a contract and 199.99 with a 2 year contract.
The people that are getting 50 or 100 dollars off the prices of the phone is because of the AT&T upgrade advantage.
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/upgrade-advantage.jsp
If the primary line on your account is over $100 then that line will be upgrade eligible every year.
I believe they have three ways of paying.
1. upgrade elligable its $199 with a 2 year contract and USE your elligability.
2. Not elligable for an upgrade its $350. with a 2 year extension on your contract but not using your future upgrade.
3. No contract $499.
I just called and thats what two local stores told me.
I was just told 500 off contract from an AT&T store.

Woa, that'd be completely new for att. I've never seen any signs or ads anywhere for previous phones that describe option 2, always just 1 or 3 (renew your contract or just no contract pricing - no inbetween). If I'm wrong, I apologise, but I haven't heard of that before.
I called a store from one of the recepits that people have posted, and they told me that there was no way some of the pricing, nor sales have happened. I was told $500 dollars from a store that was $300.
I was also told $199 from a store that sold one for $149 and that I was reading the receipt wrong and instead of the "samsung i897" like the receipt says, it was really a 3gs 32 gb phone. Basically, I was told that I am an idiot and it wasn't really that price.
what the hell is going on?
Now I'm just more mad than anxious.

That makes a lot more sense. So I think that actually clears up everything. Stores don't sell them at different prices, you may just be eligible for an additional discount. But I will still call several places when it is out to try to pick it up for 150$
So since my phone line is $150 a month, but i just upgraded last month, I am able to get this phone for $350 or $500?
wait... I want to get this phone but no data plan... as an att customer already which pricing would fit me

Honestly, I don't think think you are eligible for any of the 50 or 100$ off. Now I still haven't quite found out why some stores are charging 350 or 500 so I would simply suggest calling around.

Well I don't think you can purchase the phone without a data plan. Maybe off contract, but if you want the 2 year agreement price, you HAVE to get a data plan. As for the 50 and 100$ off, you NEED a 2 year agreement and that means you NEED a data plan.

Verizon Drops 1-year Contract Option

Oh well, they were fun while they lasted...
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile/04/11/verizon.contracts.mashable/index.html?iref=obnetwork
i made it just in time i did mine yesterday
Isn't the drop date the 17th? People still have time to make 1 yr contracts if you want, just do it asap.
I made a one year contract when I signed up. I think I read about one other company doing this also.

i always went with the 2yr contract, but generally how did the prices on smartphones compare between 1 year, 2 year and off-contract? i always thought that the 2yr contact was the most economical and that the phone in question would last me through the 2 years. obviously some people wanted the 1 year contract so that they could upgrade sooner, but is/was it worth it since the discount is smaller?
1 year was 319 and 2 was 249
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
It's still available. For an upgrade, difference is only about $30.
By the way, it's $199 for the upgrade.
I thought you had to do 2 year if you eary upgrade?
I'm glad I was able to get a 1 year contract before they axed them. This is my first Android phone, so I'm still a bit iffy!
Made it just in time
Verizon have all sort of ways to screw people. Man, I can't believe they cancel all good benefits. Being with them for 10 years, all good incentives goes one by one...
No VIP program
Kill 1 year renewal

Add this to the list...
14 day return policy on "ALL" purchases. The rule only used to apply to phones. Now it applies to all accessories.
To clear the confusion and misconceptions... the one-year contract normally added a $70 premium to the regular device cost. For the Thunderbolt, this would be $319 rather than $249 (unless you have a corporate discount with your employer... many people were able to get the TB for $199 on 2yr contract and $229 with 1yr contract).
I find the 1 year contract to be the perfect balance. The device is still priced reasonably but you are free to upgrade after a year, which falls nicely with the release of new devices. This also allows you to sell your "old" device for a reasonable amount, and usually cover the cost of your new device...
I am extremely disappointed to see the 1 year contract option go away. I am curious why Verizon axed it. This could not be hurting them! Early upgrades were available at 10 months on a 1yr contract and are available at 20 months on a 2yr.

I hope you're being sarcastic. While 1 year contracts might not have been hurting them, they can make a pile of extra $$ by dropping them. A one year contract was a max of ~$70 more than the two year. But if a person had to continue their contract another 9 months, that's typically another $60 - $70/month for them and they didn't have to subsidize a new phone for you. I personally would like to see them offer lower monthly prices if you buy an unsubsidized phone like T-Mobile does. That's a pipe dream though as mathematically inclined consumers will quickly discover that they can save a lot of coin buying unsubsidized hardware with a lesser monthly rate. It would also discourage contract renewals and slow the sales of new hardware.
That sucks. I got mine on a 1 year deal. People will hold on to thier Tbolt for a long time now.

Do other carries offer one year contracts? I'm sorry but Verizon is getting a little out of hand and with the possible At&t and t-mobile merge, i don't know if Verizon will be my first pick next time around. At&t has come a long way in service coverage and they are a little cheaper. In my area 2-4 years ago everyone had Verizon, now its a very good even split of Verizon and At&t.

Exactly. I ate the price of my Incredible, then traded it for a Droid X, then sold that and made money on it, so I bought the Thunderbolt and some accessories. 1 year isn't good enough for nerds, because that's just about the time that the real next leap occurs, but for the average consumer, it's perfect. Just buy one phone and keep selling them off on Craigslist...
This makes me sad. Hopefully in a year there will be some other company that has the Android selection of Verizon with the coverage and a 1 year contract...

Just Ordered My One S...At an Amazing Price!

So I called up T-Mobile yesterday(day the One S was released) and immediately asked for the Retention department. I was forwarded over and spoke to a sweet young woman. I explained that I was still on contract for a few months but I was thinking of canceling. I explained that I have no service the moment I walk into my apartment and randomly where I sit at work. Which is true but I went on to say that I've been using WiFi calling successfully. Although, having to resort to that is frustrating.
I told her I was offered a free phone(Samsung Galaxy Nexus), no activation fee, and $35 less in charges per month if I were to switch to a work plan with Sprint(That last part being a fabrication). She quickly responded that she could offer me a better deal. I could tell that while I was explaining the situation, she was looking through my account and saw that I have been a customer of T-Mobile for just about 7 years. She took a moment to gather approval.
She came back on the line to ask which phone I wanted. I humbly spoke of the One S and she puts me on hold again. She comes back to offer me a lower rate plan than what I pay now, with a higher data limit. She continues to say that the cost of the phone for me would be close to $300 but she had applied a $250 credit on the account so that I will only have to pay $29.18. She even applied that charge to next months bill, and if that wasn't enough, she backdated the rate plan to save me just about that amount on this months bill. So I'm basically getting the HTC One S for mere dollars added to my next months bill.
So essentially, this is just another example of how far T-Mobile will go to satisfy their loyal customers and is further proof that they deserve all those J.D. Power & Associates awards for excellence in customer service.

good price.
i have been with TMo for over 12 years. they didn't want to give me a full early upgrade (I had 3 months left). I told them that I was ready to cancel and move to AT&T. She forwarded me to customer care and they worked out a price on the HTC One S. I'm not too thrilled with it, but it's not too bad.
$249+activation+tax+shipping = $290. That's what they wanted. I told them that Walmart had it for $198. WTH. They applied a $100 credit and now the total is $190. With the $50 rebate, comes out to $140.
Still TMo could have done better. I have two lines and a data plan. Was hoping TMo would take customer loyalty into consideration even more. Oh well, I am ready to jump ship next time. screw loyalty.
Sometime those hard to believe. I was once on a VERY thin line of canceling Tmobile and moving to Verizon (wife gets 20% discount there and her Tmo doesnt work at work due to ****ty building penetration). I have 2 lines and have been a customer for 6 years. Retension department wouldn't give me ANY deal on anything, they just forwarded my call to cancellations department.
On top of this when I was trying to order One S yesterday (I am ONLY 10 days away from my full upgrade by the way) 3 different customer service reps told me 3 different things. I ended up paying $260 with tax + activation fee + shipping and no rebate (or had a choice to pay $300 + get $50 rebate). I have to mention that I did get a line credit for $80 bucks few days ago for roaming mix up where I had to pay Tmobile extra $150 < I still dont know if it was my fault or Tmobile...basically I used Wifi-calling in France to call USA and somehow all my calls were charged roaming fees (And I do know how to use Wifi-calling)
I hate Tmobile reps, their lies, and their new stupid automatic answering service

I kinda of disagree with you here. You signed a 2yr contract, and despite being a longtime customer, you're fully aware you're not due for an upgrade. As such, they SHOULDNT offer you a full upgrade. However, they typically will offer you a discounted upgrade. So you were ready to cancel and pay an Early Termination Fee? I don't see how you're upset, since they were nice enough to offer you something. The other carriers would've told you to pay full price or hit the road with the ETF.
It sounds like you're not having a case of "screw loyalty", but instead, "screw signing 2 year contracts". Were you really surprised at the result?
I see people arguing about contractual obligations and how the carrier can screw you over, but what about YOUR obligation to follow the terms and the period length?

I should be more clear, I WAS eligible for an upgrade. When I got $80 account credit few days ago, rep noted on my account that I will be eligible for full discount upgrade on 25th instead of May 5th.
One of the reps from retensions then lied to me that I was not, and he doesnt see it noted on my account, rep before that said that I do have a full discount. In total I made 4 calls and got 4 different results (1 rep just had no idea what to do and transferred my call to some private voice mail)
I just renewed my contract with a grandfathered plan and Corp discount. I was able to get 3 phones, all HTC One S for a total of $200. They basically offered the phones for $199 each with no rebates, then offered initially a $250 total discount which I was able to get them to add another $150 discount. So it's $600 for the 3 phones - $400 credit. The credit shows up already on my account.
I thought about waiting for the S3 but I liked the One S in stores.
Now I am thinking of using the trade-in offer to send a couple of old phones. I am not sure if I am still eligible or not.
The upgrade, activation and shipping fees were waived. I had the $20 preferred android plan on one line. It is supposed to be ulimited but in relaity it has a "soft" limit of 5 GB.
My other 2 lines had the $5 web2go data plan offered by retention 2 years ago and it worked great with iPhones. The 2 lines were switched to the same $20 5GB plan.
Just a note, I called retention twice . My first offer was to pay $350 for 3 phones which I didn't accept and the second time the CSR was more willing to get a better deal and upped the credit.
I also got $10 off my monthly plan for 24 months.
Can't complain.
here's T-Mobile's link to get $100 trade-in for any smartphone or $200 for any iphone.

Not bad. I pulled off something very similar last year to get the G2x on full upgrade pricing despite being only a year into my contract, using the AT&T merger and a threat to move to Sprint as bargaining chips. Got that, and got the One S for full upgrade pricing this year by helping them get some conquest customers from Verizon.
I just got my One S today and came from an SGS2 on T-Mo, all I have to say is wow. Everything about the phone is wonderful. What a well crafted piece of tech. Love this phone. Sense 4.0 is so much nicer than TWiz. My 2 cents.
Does this really work?

So now I have the amaze. Had a problem with my first one, and I am still in buyers remorse, so there sending me another one tomorrow. Now I have 20 more days to mess with these phone and if I dont like it, all I need to do is pay 50 bux and they will send me the S.

This is interesting. I may call them tomorrow because I am eligible to upgrade my line as a part of my family plan. ATT also offers employees of my company a 20% discount on monthly plan. We have 4 lines on our tmobile family plan... 2 are not under contract, 1 is under contract until the 29th, and the other is under contract until September. Maybe I can argue with ATT tomorrow that two are still under contract, but we will pay the disconnect fees (really just one after this weekend) and see what kind of deal they can offer on 4 phones (2 htc one x, sgs2, and a stupid free phone), and then call tmobile to work something out.
I think the ideal situation would be ATT offers me a plan and the phones with a price, and I present it to tmobile as a deal, and receive free phone upgrades for each line. This is farfetched, but if they want to keep our service, what else could they do?

What a delay...you are clearly going to get the One S ...stop wasting time.........jeez. So when you call back on the 19th day and "decided" to go with the one S and the $50 doesnt apply you'll come back and bash t-mobile.............and to clarify. Its consumer to business...the.reps.discretion is.what makes.us.happy or dissatisfied.not."The Company"

Of course the 50 applies. I had a credit of 250 posted to the account and 200 of it went towards the down payment of the amaze ( 149.99, 49.99 tax ). The other 50 went towards next month bill. For me to get the ONE s, I need to pay an extra 50 because the Down payment for the ONE s is 199.99, not 149.99. I been with T-Mobile for 5 years and just signed a new 2 year contract. I dont have any reason to bash them.
Is this Tmobile USA? If so, how did you get passed the automatic menu to a customer retention rep?

I was also able to get enough credits to get the one s for free since they said I'm a valued customer for 5yrs
Just tried this and TMobile says that I'm on value plan so no discounts at all! I have to pay $599 retail price.
So much for being a "valued" customer for 7 years.

Not such a great deal when you consider the contract part of it, I think. They've got you for two years at probably $70+/month ($1680 at least). And during those two years, if you want to upgrade, they'll probably make you sign a new contract AND pay the new contract price (if they even let you upgrade). Sounds like a raw deal to me.
I'll take my $670 upfront cost, no contract and $30/month plan anyday. Next year, if I want a new phone, I sell this one for $450, get whatever new phone I want, and never even have to consider my carrier as an obstacle.
Just my $.02.

I pre-ordered mine on Negrielectronics. I used a coupon for $20 off (sorry, that coupon is no longer valid, but there are others that are still good), and Negri's price was already cheaper than T-Mobile's. Plus no tax and shipping. Ended up saving $100 over T-Mobile's off-contract price.
They still haven't shipped their devices, but for $100 in savings, I can wait a few days extra. And of course, having no contract is the icing on top.
I bought mine at a Cambodian store made in vietnam class b with 1 year warranty 32gb white no region lock tried with thai simcard all ok and cambodian sim all fine tried my roaming philippine line still workin. Costed me 696$

Thanks. I'm close to pulling the trigger on one. I use RedPocket and do not want to pay ATT for even one month as required on their no contract price.

Well, if you wait a couple of weeks, they'll probably start showing up on Swapp (XDA Marketplace) once the 14-day return window has passed. People might change their minds and list them for sale.

Thanks for the heads up. Now trying to sort thru the different models (carrier differences) and prices. I used to think the Tmo and ATT hardware were the same. I'm not so sure anymore. The ATT flavor is $55 more expensive on Ngri. It also appears the 64GB model is not available anywhere that I've seen. Don't know how important the memory issue is since an SD card can be added.... Since I use an ATT MVNO I have to be sure about compatibility. Is there really a difference in the 4g freqs ?

This thread on XDA seems to suggest that both the T-Mobile and AT&T versions support the exact same frequencies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2464498
I've noticed the difference in price as well, and it is considerable. I'm not sure why the T-Mobile version is cheaper than the others. Negri buys theirs directly from T-Mobile, so it could just be that they are getting a better deal from T-Mobile than the other carriers.
As for the storage, 32GB is pretty decent to start with. I've seen that that translates to about 25GB of user accessible storage out of the box. And yes, most people have MicroSD cards already, and 32GB cards are pretty cheap these days (I bout mine for $20 last year). Someone also just posted a link in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466753) to a 128GB MicroSD card. Of course, the price is ridiculous, so I don't see many people buying that.

UK Pre-orders

I don't think there is one, so thought I would start one. Anyone in UK had their phones dispatched yet? I have a pre-order on EE due for delivery 20th.
Glad you opened one I've got the upgrade program from Samsung no changes on my order status. I am with ee and was due for an upgrade last month when I rang them the cheapest plan they could offer was £51/month with 5gb data and unlimited calls and texts with £29.99 upfront. So I asked for my PAC and got the upgrade program for £29.70/month and got sim only plan for £13/month unlimited calls and texts and 13gb of data which worked out way cheaper plus I get to upgrade next year or just stay on my current plan however did have to pay £68 upfront/deposit but still cheaper than what they offered.
How much are you paying?
I've upgrading on vodafone haven't heard anything yet about dispatch all I know is the 20th I should be getting it.
I gotta pay £30 upfront and then £47 pm but I get unlimited calls texts but I also get good data 24gb of it.

I'm also on the UK upgrade programme from last year's S7 edge. My order status hasn't changed yet but it should do on Wednesday when it's shipped for Thursday delivery. I'm currently paying £27.60 a month so it's only gone up a couple quid and I have a £10 monthly deal with Giffgaff which makes it nicely affordable considering I can change every 12 months. I'll get pre-paid postage kit along with the new phone to return my current handset and once received back they clear my current finance off so it's worked nicely. I've just got my housemate to do the same as she has an S6 and EE were wanting £51 a month to upgrade and be locked in for 2 years!

It used to be DHL. But I think they now use UKMail
I upgraded with Vodafone. Just spoke to the twitter team they said that people will start to see the handsets on the 20th!
I hope I get mine on the 20th I'm really impatient now. I'm browsing for cases and other accessories every day. I've had enough of the small iPhone borrowed from the wife.

I've already got my case and screen protector.
Just can't understand why we don't offered speaker or vr like carphone warehouse do.
No. The preorder offer is rubbish. If I did t need to him this iPhone I would wait a few months and get a better deal.
I would love the charge stand. What case have you gone for? I really can't decide. Not sure if a fully blown protection case or just a cover.

Big corporate like vodafone could easily give something free of charge.
I've brought a spigen neo hybrid case quite a few people recommended it. Lovely case

I had a spigen for my iPhone it has a metal bumper and was really nice but as most that had that type of case the metal split at the charge point as it was very thin. I do like the spigen but not keen on the kick stand.

I could be wrong (I'm not a fan of UKMail to be honest) but looking at my last two order pages from the Samsung website, it does look like they use UKMail as their carrier now, was in fact Parcelforce last year.

I got a pretty poor deal on EE for an additional line, but I also have it on order from Very on SIM free, so probably going to stick my existing SIM into that and go with what I got - only thing is you can only get VoLTE directly with EE

From S7 you didn't need a phone from EE for WiFi calling or VoLTE. So you should be good.
According to the EE community only phones purchased from EE direct support VoLTE

Hi just to let you know I don't think that's true I'm not on ee but when I got my s7 on vodafone i had wifi calling on it i then flashed it with btu which took everything vodafone off i text a number to activate it and now being on btu still have wifi calling.
Hello, wifi calling is supported but VoLTE (ability to use the 4g when on a call) isn't
Yeah seems that way from some research. Possibly can use the s7 fix by editing the csc
