Camera Test - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Those photos look amazing, especially the low light ones. Combine that with the focus speed and it looks like we're going to have a serious beast here. I can't wait, the camera on my Note 3 is slow, and the quality is mediocre. It will be so good to have a phone camera that relegates my DSLR to occasional use.

Best camera comparison/demo I've seen yet, thanks.

Mi4C vs SGS4 camera only

Hi,
How would you compare camera in Mi4c vs Galaxy s4 ? Is there any one who moved from s4 to Mi4c ? I have browsed all pages with pictures and comparison tools however cannot find real user experience. I am currently using sgs4 and camera is enough for me, however with new phone I would like to get a bit more Will I get it with Mi4C ?
Thanks
If I were in your place, I'd wait for mi5. S4 ain't a bad device
The only thing i liked about the S4 was the screen. The camera takes blurry shots 4/5 times and it lagged to no end. The Mi4c is worlds above it.
I had i9505 2 months ago I sold It and bought mi4c I think mi4c has a better camera as compared to s4 and if we talk about features of camera mi4c has awesome manual mode which s4 lacks
I agree with ermacwins. You should wait a little for mi5
hey, as far as camera is concerned the mi4c is miles ahead of the s4 (and it should be, actually, it's a flagship two years ahead !) i wasn't a sg4 owner but i have used it a lot and i'm also a previous xperia z owner (both share the same imx135 sensor) and i can safely suggest the mi4c as a camera update over the sg4. however if you are very interested in night photography mi4/mi note will suit you better (and of course mi5).
mi4c's imx258 is way ahead of s4, IMO the worst thing about mi4c's camera is the MIUI camera app itself - you've got plenty of options, but in worse light conditions it ruins 9 of 10 taken photos - a much simpler google camera takes much better pictures as it uses better exposure parameters and doesn't try to wipe out the higher ISO noise along with all the detail left
and yes, wait for the mi5 to appear - the mi4c price will drop making it even better buy
Hi, I come from a family of S4 owners but used a LG G2 instead.
The Mi4C takes much better pictures than the S4 (main reason being its fast PDAF focus). The processing is mature, it capures much more light in the same conditions as well and shutter lag is much less. Like the other people here, I advise you to wait for the Mi 5 release, but here are some pictures I took with my Mi 4c:

I remember reading your comments on the xda portal camera related on cm roms. If you havent tried cm13, try it now because it has a new snapdragon camera and it rivals the miui stock camera.

actually the miui app has proper manual controls and the g. camera has not. but yes, in auto mode your night shots come out both blurry and full of noise. (who makes the software? the camera picks 1/12 s.s. and 3000 iso ! tons of noise and shake too ! )

I'm on Team Superluminal's CM13. I'll definitely look into it. The stock camera of CM13 is horrible, it doesn't even support PDAF. At the moment I have to restore a MiUI build when I know I'm going to spend the day taking pictures, and revert back to CM13 afterwards. Thank you for letting me know, camera quality is the one thing that bugs me on AOSP.

Are you on the latest build because it was added with the ROM. I'm on a older build and had to flash the camera. There was some flickering but apparently fixed.

Camera Quality

Hi everyone,
So I've been looking at the mate 8 as my next purchase, and Some reviews state the camera quality isn't good due to software/firmware issues. Other reviews state the camera quality is really good. I was wondering what owners opinions are? If it does have exposure and focus issues, are they sorted if you use a different camera app? I don't know if different apps can alter issues that might be related to firmware?
Thanks
Ian
I wouldn't consider myself a power user but I'm very happy with the camera so far. I would mostly be taking pictures of friends and family etc and quality is just fine for me
I'm the same, mainly I'll be taking pictures of the family and scenery, that kinda thing. I'm not what you'd call a professional photographer by any means. But it is said the best camera you have is the one on you at the time, so I just want to make sure it's a relatively good one
Thanks
Ian
Camera was bad with the first update
But with latest update it became better
But if you are seeking for great camera go for lg or sam
If you wanna a power horse phablet go for mate 8
That's the thing, I've had both Samsung and LG phones before, and while the cameras were good I wasn't keen on the phones themselves. I've had a G3, a Note 4, an S6 and a Oneplus One. I was half considering a Oneplus 2, but only because of the price. £249 is cheap for a high spec phone. I'm not keen on the nexus line of phones either. I know they are popular, and you probably think I'm mad. But they are just a bog standard android phone. If I'm paying more than £400 for a phone I want it to do more than the straight forward stuff, straight out the box. Other wise id just get an iPhone. Half the stuff on the Mate 8 I'll probably never use I admit, but the fact its there is what I like. Does that make sense?
Has anybody tried a different camera app from the play store to see if that improves the pictures, or isn't it as simple as that? I'm not sure how apps, firmware, API's and hardware all tie in together, so I apologise in advance if that was a stupid question.
Thanks
Ian
The camera is a so and so in my eyes. It's ok, but very soft, in daytime but I wouldn't pick it to take pictures of kids indoor. Right now the best all around camera I have is the Nexus 6P, mostly because it will do really good indoors and most of my pics are indoors. I read that there will be a upgrade for the camera after 162 firmwarewize. Otherwise, it's a really good phone. Apps doesn't do better than stock camera.

The camera is fine. It's not the best camera out there in terms of image quality when you zoom in on the pictures but it does the job. It has good colors and good exposure. It's fun to shoot with. I think quality should be able to be fixed with software update. I find that some indoor night shots almost have the same amount of detail as some of the ones shoot in daylight. The processing seems to heavy creating artefacts in images taken even in daylight.
The Mate 8 is pretty much the perfect phone in every way except the camera is not top notch. Excellent screen that is more clear and has better contrast than the screen on my iPhone 6S Plus. The battery life is the best you can get on any phone now. The build quality is fantastic. Audio quality in headphones is top notch, best I've every heard in any phone the dynamic range and clarity is amazing. Even better than my Meizu Pro 5 that has an internal DAC and amplifiers in it. It is super fast and has a very smooth and responsive UI.
Thank you for your input. You guys have confirmed the fact that the mate 8 will be my next phone just got to wait for it to come into stock again now!
Thanks
Ian

Is it just me or is my camera faulty (grainy photos)?

Hi everyone,
I am not talking about the distortion issue here.
I just got my device and have taken a few quick photos, mostly on AUTO. For some reason some of the photos look extremely grainy and of low quality, others seem better. To be honest I don't know what to make of it. I will have to do some more tests in better light conditions but to be honest I was quite shocked how bad some photos look in comparison to my GFs Huawei P10 for example. My HTC M9 photos felt more sharp.
It feels like Xperia is going crazy with the post processing and blurring/graining everything up. Just look at the computer desk photo, it looks like someone overused photoshop filters.
I have attached a few photos for reference.
Is it just me or is this the way the camera behaves?
No, it's not just you. I have no idea how reviewers ended up calling the camera "one of the best shooters around". Considering this is a flagship device, the camera sucks. Plain and simple. I'm getting more n more pi**** I didn't chose the S8 and put my trust in Sony.
I get the same results on the Sony camera app. Try to use Open Camera, at least for me the difference is very big, especially on detail.
The Post processing is totaly random and hilarious. Currently using Open camera and snap camera. There ist still some unwanted Post processing but Not as much as before.

Haven you happened to find out why in manual mode one can only go up to 1/10s exposure time?

Doogee mix 2 - camera

Hi guys,
I appreciate that this is a specific Mix 2 question but couldnt see a mix 2 section yet to post in.
I recieved my Mix 2 about a week ago and my first impressions are that its a great phone - it does everything I want....... apart from when it comes to the cameras.
Firstly, the quality is pretty bad and a large step back from the oppo find 7 I am switching from. Both front and rear facing cameras fail to properly focus and always seem to take photos like there is a dirty lens, a sort of soft look, most obvious when photographing text, which just isnt sharp at all.
Secondly, it appears that the second rear facing camera doesn't do anything - is it even real?!? I believe its there for the optical zoom option, but even when you zoom in with the camera app, you can still cover this camera and it has no effect on the photo, therefore it is not used.
Any ideas on how to improve the picture quality? I presume its going to be a case of waiting for Doogee or some developers to take this device on to update the firmware......
Thanks

A new update of the firmware is being "cooked" to solve this problem.
I know that will be released soon.

It would be great... Camera performance is the main issue of the device. On the other hand, all the other features are quite well
Sorry to put this query here. Even i haven't got any place to right it down. I also have a same problem. Rear camera not working. Bought this phone specially for camera specifications. When will be the updates release to make the second rear camera work. Even 8 MP Nokia camera takes better picture than this 16 MP. And there are many bugs. Many apps crashes. And on YouTube I have seen many videos which shows many camera app showing 4k video recording option, but I think that was after update and I still haven't received it.i show that video 1 month back.
New update from company has improved the camera lil bit. But still not a usable one. And it keeps on hunting for focus in video.
From morning all Google apps are getting closed by itself. Please help to solve the issue in mix 2
no updates have improved the camera on this phone for me so far. Taking photos of static images is ok - maybe 6/10, if I use whatsapp to take a photo of anything it always appears very soft and a little blurred. If I try to take a photo of my cat.....no chance, the shutter is so slow, unless the object doesnt move at all you cant capture the image. I do like the phone and previously havent been bothered about camera specs, but that was when all my previous phones could take decent pictures. This might be the reason I get rid of this phone in a few months, it turns out a decent camera is a must for me - I was spoilt with my Oppo find 7, which had an incredible camera

+1 about camera perfrmance, i bought it to do a review and the camera is the worst thing in an otherwise decent phone. I did a comparison with the honor 7x, which has a much better camera at the same price.

Hallo guys, there isn't a procedure to flash Google camera hdr+ on this smartphone o mediatek CPU. I founded everything for Qualcomm but nothing to mediatek.

Here is why you should try ARNOVA8G2 gcam port :

Hello guys,
I'm the owner of an OP6 for a few weeks now and I didn't really pay attention to the gcam ports because I thought our default app was already very good.
But since the Pixels 3 were announced, i grew some interest back into Google's work and so I've been following @Arnova8G2 work to see if he would be able to make some magic. And the magic happened: he has recently released a port from the Pixel 3's camera and the results are astonishing. Of course a few things are not working, and I let you refer to his post about what's working and not, and what's the state of advancement: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77878056&postcount=2656
But so far, what's working is very impressive.
1) Portrait mode works amazingly well. The edges of the face are very well recognized and you can then edit the blurness strength. Again, I'm very surprised about the result.
Here is a sample : http://prntscr.com/l63n9n
(Sorry, for some reason, imgur wasn't working properly for this one, no idea why)
2) The front facing camera is MUCH MUCH better. I was actually very very disappointed about it but not with this port the front facing camera has A LOT of potential, even I'm not a huge fan of selfies;
Look at the samples :
GCAM : https://i.imgur.com/Q0H7P8Q.jpg
OPCAM : https://i.imgur.com/VsFuFwQ.jpg
3) The low light performance has improved a lot as well.
Again, some samples taken in extreme darkness.

OPCAM : https://i.imgur.com/Tvfx8qd.jpg
4) New pics - low light

I've just installed the port app so I can't give you much more feedback but maybe that will motivate you to give it a try and thanks @Arnova8G2. Don't hesitate to donate him, he deserves it. I don't take any credits, and if he feels like creating his thread I'll delete this one.
I'll try to keep it updated in the meantime and don't hesitate to send me some of your pics, I could add them to the OP. Also, If I have the chance to take more (interesting?) shots, I will update this post.
Last thing but not least, please respect the fact it's a OnePlus 6 forum so don't discuss about other phones. Thank you.
I just tried @Arnova8G2 build and unfortunately when taking a selfie w the front camera, the face retouching doesn't work. Both the natural and soft retouching don't stick after taking the pic.
Hello guys,
After discussion the thread is opened again since the other thread is being closed for an unknown amount of time.
Feel free to discuss about the port, share some pictures and of course if you make new updates @Arnova8G2 you're more than welcome.
I will upload some more pictures to the OP very soon when I get to my computer. Everytime I make a new comparison I'm surprised .
EDIT: I'm just realizing the other thread is opened again so this thread is very useful anymore.
The other thread can be edited by arnova himself so it's perfect as well. Sorry for the bothering you but if a moderator passes by, he's welcome to close this thread, again .
Closed at OP's request.
