Hi everyone,
So I've been looking at the mate 8 as my next purchase, and Some reviews state the camera quality isn't good due to software/firmware issues. Other reviews state the camera quality is really good. I was wondering what owners opinions are? If it does have exposure and focus issues, are they sorted if you use a different camera app? I don't know if different apps can alter issues that might be related to firmware?

I wouldn't consider myself a power user but I'm very happy with the camera so far. I would mostly be taking pictures of friends and family etc and quality is just fine for me
I'm the same, mainly I'll be taking pictures of the family and scenery, that kinda thing. I'm not what you'd call a professional photographer by any means. But it is said the best camera you have is the one on you at the time, so I just want to make sure it's a relatively good one

That's the thing, I've had both Samsung and LG phones before, and while the cameras were good I wasn't keen on the phones themselves. I've had a G3, a Note 4, an S6 and a Oneplus One. I was half considering a Oneplus 2, but only because of the price. £249 is cheap for a high spec phone. I'm not keen on the nexus line of phones either. I know they are popular, and you probably think I'm mad. But they are just a bog standard android phone. If I'm paying more than £400 for a phone I want it to do more than the straight forward stuff, straight out the box. Other wise id just get an iPhone. Half the stuff on the Mate 8 I'll probably never use I admit, but the fact its there is what I like. Does that make sense?
Has anybody tried a different camera app from the play store to see if that improves the pictures, or isn't it as simple as that? I'm not sure how apps, firmware, API's and hardware all tie in together, so I apologise in advance if that was a stupid question.

The camera is a so and so in my eyes. It's ok, but very soft, in daytime but I wouldn't pick it to take pictures of kids indoor. Right now the best all around camera I have is the Nexus 6P, mostly because it will do really good indoors and most of my pics are indoors. I read that there will be a upgrade for the camera after 162 firmwarewize. Otherwise, it's a really good phone. Apps doesn't do better than stock camera.

The camera is fine. It's not the best camera out there in terms of image quality when you zoom in on the pictures but it does the job. It has good colors and good exposure. It's fun to shoot with. I think quality should be able to be fixed with software update. I find that some indoor night shots almost have the same amount of detail as some of the ones shoot in daylight. The processing seems to heavy creating artefacts in images taken even in daylight.
The Mate 8 is pretty much the perfect phone in every way except the camera is not top notch. Excellent screen that is more clear and has better contrast than the screen on my iPhone 6S Plus. The battery life is the best you can get on any phone now. The build quality is fantastic. Audio quality in headphones is top notch, best I've every heard in any phone the dynamic range and clarity is amazing. Even better than my Meizu Pro 5 that has an internal DAC and amplifiers in it. It is super fast and has a very smooth and responsive UI.
Thank you for your input. You guys have confirmed the fact that the mate 8 will be my next phone just got to wait for it to come into stock again now!

So I've been noticing a lot of Smartphones, especially the flagships have really great photos. One of my family members or maybe even me might get one of these flagships soon and it'll be nice to have that as our main camera device but another possibility is that we'll get a cheaper smartphone and a point and shoot in just around the same price as one flagship phone so...
With the cameras of current flagships such as G2/G3, S5, Note 3(excluding those types such as K Zoom, Lumia 1020), is it more cost efficient to just use that as both a phone and a camera or is it better to just buy a seperate point and shoot while getting a cheaper smartphone?
And given we'll be considering stuff like the Lumia 1020, K Zoom, would they completely make getting a point and shoot not viable altogether?
Criteria here is mostly the ability to control ISO, details, lowlight photos. This is more of a curiosity kind of question

Honestly if you want to get a galaxy s5 you should grab a s4 instead there is very little difference in the phones and is still a great phone. the Galaxy k just looks just as good as a Galaxy Camera, the Galaxy camera NX is supposed to be a great point and shoot as in with what you want in Iso control, and other Settings. i think you should grab a S4 and one of the three Galaxy cameras or a Nikon Coolpix S800c/S810c (both run android). currently my S800c just arrived and photo shooting wise is Alright its defiantly not perfect but its a great camera, the videos it takes are AMAZING 10/10 MUCH WOW SUCH GREAT PHOTO. only bad parts some apps randomly close, it does not have the best android specs but it does the job. the Battery life is supposed to be terrible as well but i haven't noticed anything too bad, ordering another spare battery. mine the s800c runs gingerbread 2.3.3 but the s810c runs 4.2.2 and i wouldn't know the other differences since this one was a little cheaper, the s810c is supposed to be the same price which the first galaxy camera is so i would recommend the galaxy camera over the nikon any day. whatever you end up doing i hope you enjoy it!

Just picked up a v10 from tmo yesterday and been playing around with it. I've seen two different V10's and both have had very unimpressive front facing image quality. I know that it's 5 MP vs the G4's 8 MP. However, whenever I open it up, it looks very grainy and soft in low light. During the day in bright light outside, it looks very oversharpened and the dynamic range is poor. The sky is typically completely blown out, and my face looks a bit unrealistic with the oversharpening. I've played around with the beauty feature and tried it at different levels. Indoors, even with beauty set to 0, the image was still very soft. I also did HDR off and on and it didn't make a difference. When recording video, it looks a lot better. These do seem like software issues. I'm just really surprised since LG is really pushing photography/video with this phone, but the front camera images just don't look good at all to me. I'm going to be using the V10 for a bit to see if I want to keep it, or if I want to go back to the 6P. I don't expect the same quality of front facing camera on the V10, as the 6P. I just didn't expect it to be this much worse. I also compared it to a G4, and the G4 looked great. I don't think the 3 MP difference should make that much of a difference.
Anyway, let me know if you guys have experienced this too.
You need to remember the V10 ups the screen gamma (everything looks pastel/washed out) and adds software sharpening when you're in sunlight, so what you're seeing on the screen in sunlight is not really what the camera is capturing.

It does look a bit better after I take it. I also uploaded it to drive and looked at it on my computer. It's still somewhat oversharpened. Can you explain the screen gamma? So, everything that's on the screen will look pastel like? So, if I send someone a picture or upload it to instagram/FB it will look better to other people?
Edit: In decent light, the front facing camera looks better in snapchat, however it tends to be fairly dark. I guess it uses a lower ISO? not sure. But it also looks less processed. The back camera is also pretty dark in snapchat.
I will say I LOVE the wide angle selfie... I mean I have NEVER been a selfie kinda guy but it really does capture alot. I can get me and my family of 4 easily in one pic.
The image quality could be better but it's nice to be able to get more into the picture.

Coming from Note 4, I do agree with you that the FCC is a little bit lacking on the sharpness department. It seems like there's an overly-aggressive noise-reduction being applied even with the "Beauty" mode turned to 0. I just that the selfies looks smushy compared to the ones taken by my note 4.

Does it make a difference which ffc you're using? The wide angle lens tends to be slightly grainier compared to the solo lens. It defaults to wide..
I wonder what's the actual megapixel capability of the front sensor as well as it's pixel size..
Note. I need beauty mode setting of 10. I'm still hella oogly set at highest... :silly:

So, what I've noticed is that when using the stock camera it tends to oversharpen making it look artificial. But, if I use snapchat, or google camera, it makes it seem like it can't focus or something. The image looks very, very soft and even a bit blurred. In low light, it just looks dark and noisy.

Nope, both look the same to me. Honestly, I compared a front facing image with a Nexus 5, and while the nexus 5 is obviously low resolution it actually didn't look THAT much worse. I really wish they kept the single camera from the G4. It looked great when I checked it out. I'm still debating about keeping this or going back to the 6P. If the V10 had the same FFC as the 6P/G4, had the same slow motion capabilities as the 6P, and maybe have a slightly more saturated screen I would have to say the V10 is definitely a much better phone. I still might end up keeping it though. I do like the manual control, better video capture and of course the sd card/removable battery. Also, I prefer the design/build of the V10.

just got the LG V10 around mid November. Mostly bought it for the camera...was supposed to be the top of the line and have great reviews. I HATE this camera. The pics all looked washed out and dull. I have told Verizon about this twice and the last time the kid was kinda smart assy about it and said I'm not gonna get saturated pretty pics. I'm going to get detail pics of what I'm actually seeing. I want my beautiful, colorful pics back. I mean who doesn't want colorful vibrant pics! He told me if I want that then I'm going to have to edit my pics. Very disappointed in this phone...if I could get rid of it I would...

I don't know...I'm trying Verizon one more time here in a few minutes. I will ask them about that. I sure hope so. I'm already looking into selling the phone and coming up with the difference to pay it off to get a new one. I show people all the time and they all say the same thing. I like bright, beautiful pics. With this camera there's no vibrant colors and some of the pics look like there's like a "hazy" over them. After I use and editor...they look really nice (I will admit) but I'm not going to edit every pic I take when my Samsung Galaxy s5 they all looked good and I would pic just a few to tweak up to make look even better. Not edit every pic to have it look as it should!

I don't feel as though I'm being asked to make unacceptable compromises for a very competitively-priced phone that has a positively screaming performance. I came into this relationship with eyes wide open (and I don't need a DSLR-quality phone camera, either). So far, I couldn't be happier with the OnePlus 5.

Got frustrated with the Nexus 6p after a year and 10 months, so I decided to buy a one plus 5. Battery life is exceptional and overall performance makes using the phone a joy. R.I.P. Nexus 6P. Really liking the device so far.
Liking my OP5 so much. I can squeeze the battery to the maximum and get many screen time hours. The camera takes really good pics (not like an S8 tough, but pretty decent) and everyone can forget about the lag. As I said, really happy!
Too soon to say, but it could end up being the best phone I've owned so far. 2 major things holding me back from that decision are the inconsistent battery life and camera performance.
I can def say i've grown to like the device. The camera bugged me out at first but its getting better. Coming from a S8+, I missed the speed of stock android. touchwiz is beyond laggy. The only thing i can say that bugs me is the phone not being waterproof. And i wouldve preferred not having a physically home button.
Ok so I've received my phone week ago after using it i have to admit that the phone is literally a beast! If you are looking for a phone for "The fastest" this is one you want in your hand.
I am lucky that my op5 is not affected by the "jelly effect". The things i loved
*Speaker ( almost like stereo.., actually i am a music person i listen to music most of the time i don't really like ear/head phones)
*Speed (as i said the beast in performance. I have used galaxy s8 but don't really like the TouchWiz! Tbh TouchWiz itself feels laggy!)
*Display ( i don't really care for qhd or anything so for me fhd is good for me i don't use vr.. if you are a frequent user of vr you may not like the display)
*Camera ( ok i have to admit not the best camera phone in the market but at the sametime not the worst. I don't really like the low light pictures until now thanks to gcamera hdr+ so now i am very happy in the camera department.)
*Battery ( i am getting 6.5hr+ sot. I am a music lover told you, my 4g volte + data always turned on , i use Bluetooth to connect and listen music, 3 hrs average Calling! Standby time is very good so i am very much satisfied)
Things i hate
I dont like the microphone for the Calls it captures more background sound not like the op3! Op3 was good!
Vibration motor! Still not that much improvement! Love the iPhone vibration though!
Not water proof!
Love the phone. Solid 4.5/5.
Prior to this, I utilized a Samsung Note 3 and the performance is night and day.
This is literally the fastest phone I've used, it runs smoother than my friends S8. The battery life is amazing as well. I'd give the phone a 5/5 if it were waterproof and if it had OIS. The waterproofing isn't necessary but I live in an area where it rains quite frequently, so it would have been nice. The camera is great in regular light and the video recording is good (other than the fact that is clips the edges of the videos in order to electronically stabilize it).
I'd love for it to be priced comparably to the OP3 but it is still a good phone nonetheless and hundreds of dollars cheaper than the competition.
I'm in love with this phone, i come from an S7 edge, the interface is so much cleaner, no duplicate app, no lag, this phone is slightly larger and harder tu use in a hand but i prefer the OP5 material, the glass is too slippery and become oily. The camera of the s7 edge was a little bit better in low light, but in daylight the photo looks the same and the zoom is pretty fun to use.
I have the soft gold version and it's really gorgeous
voted 4, simply because OIS is missing, coming from the HTC 10 it's a major change and not in a positive way, the camera isn't awful by any means but OIS should have been mandatory, it's crazy that it wasn't especially seeing as they had made such noise about it.
Other than that, the phone is a monster, primarily due to the snapdragon 835, it can play pretty much any game / emulator, even ones previously unplayable, ie: PPSSPP and Gamecube games on dolphin.
Would also have been nice to see waterproofing (even though it's already been tested to have some form of protection)
overall i'm happy, it's just OIS not being there. Shame.

The one plus is the better camera, by some way. Don't get me wrong the 6P was a great phone, first and only Huawei I've ever had, my sister is still using it.
As ois is absent from both devices you're simply comparing the actual lenses and in this regard the one plus 5 smokes most phones. It's really just ois that makes the difference , stability on EIS which the one plus does have just doesn't match up to ois.
But unless you're recording a video or trying to get a perfect image whilst zooming you can live without it.
Even the iPhone 7 is without ois.

No worries mate. The one plus is a beast man, it surprised me and I'm quite a critic.
It was the best "shut up and take my money" I have ever faced. The feeling off the touch is good, materials are premium, extremely fast OS and touch reaction etc..
Ofc, I felt in love with the dash charge! Ok, is not as fast as oneplus claims to be .. but is really fast!
Ah! I was about to forget .. do not let your GF take a selfie using the front camera! She will have your phone occupied for the rest of its life!

Had an Xiaomi Mi 5, absolutely fantastic in every way. But the screen was too small for me. Then changed to the Mi s plus, that's a perfect one! But I sold it and bought the op5, the only issue is the portrait mode, the Mi 5s plus was better. Despite that, it's really the best smartphone for now.
The Latest weeks I have study alot of pictures taken with Samsung S8 Plus, Huawei Mate 9, Nexus 6P, Oneplus 3T and 5, Nexus 5X, Iphone 7 Plus, HTC U11 and U Ultra,...
And NO, they arent any good at all. Why?
When you just zoom in the picture you notice how much afterwork that is done by the software, noise reduction, sharpness, contrast... Everything look so artificiell.
Skin tones in faces always have some kind of unnatural hue.
You realize how bad it is after looking on the DNG raw files, which is the pure picture file without the software work.
From which phone doesn't matter, if you compare Nexus 6P to and older phone, they are almost the same. The picture quality is silly bad. It is noise all over the pictures, even in daylight.
Instead of do so much work on camera software to fix the problems, why not take more time on making larger sensors and a way to apply them in a good way so they dont take to much space in the phones.
Looking at photo samples from oldies like Nokia N82, 808 I releazie that to could have been a lot more progress in camera development in mobiles.
I really hope in near future that that manufactures takes a huge step forward with some new
invention, because the cameras in the cellphones are way too overhyped. The cameras could be so much better.
I currently use an OP5 which i am pretty happy about (great performance, fast charging and no bloat), except for the rear camera (using stock camera app). It sometimes mess up skin tones creating a water pastel kind of effect and i find its low light performance questionable. I mostly take pictures of my kids, and it is frustrating when this happen since usually its not a posed photo where you can just try again.
I am considering upgrading to the OP7 Pro, but i am really confused about the camera performance. DxoMark has it scoring very high (using a different firmware?), and many reviewers also rank it among the best, while several others complain about horrible performance.
So, what i want to ask is:
1. Is the OP7 Pro camera a significant upgrade over the OP5?
2. Has the new firmware been released, and has it addressed the photo quality concerns?
3. Is the OP7 Pro rear camera on par with P30 Pro and S10+ ignoring zoom capabilities?
The camera is okay, I'd say it's better than my lg g6, so it should be an upgrade over the op5. It has the potential to be just as good as my s9+ camera, and sometimes it is just as good, sometimes it's just not.
Personally I'd say if camera performance is more important to you than price, unlockability, or bloat, go with the s10. If you want something that feels like a better op5 go with the op7p, but the camera will most likely not be able to compete with the s10. I'd also say avoid the p30 pro because I don't think you should spend $700-800 on something that will only get updates for a few more months.
Camera performance for me is fine, I never really use my camera, when I do I'm not trying to take artsy shots, and every time I take a picture its good enough to get my point across.
It's definitely an upgrade over the op5i had and it's an upgrade over my op6 camera as well.
I upgraded from OP5 to OP7Pro and honestly, it is a big upgrade. After tweaking the gCam stuff for a while, while there are times that the stock camera has better results, the gCam team have done an outstanding job pushing the camera hardware to their fullest.
The display alone is worth it. Complete eye candy.

I really dislike the Samsung software, it is significantly more expensive and it has a front-camera in the display (i prefer a pop-up because i only rarely take selfies and because i prefer fingerprint unlock), so it would have to a significant difference in camera performance.
Why will the P30 Pro only get updates for a few more months? I had considered it, but disliked paying more for a somewhat slower device.

samsungs one ui is a lot better than it used to be, the front camera on the s10+ is probably significantly better than the front camera of the op7p because it doesn't focus. Back camera probably won't be as significant as the front.
The United States has stuff going on where companies can't do business with huawei, including google. They have a 90 day thing going on so for 90 days Huawei will continue to get updates, but if the trade ban isn't reversed in 90 days Huawei will only be allowed to use aosp, and not use any of googles goodness.
The camera can be inconsistent. But the hardware is up there with the best and can come out with comparable results. Just still some software and processing to be tweaked
Stock is horrible. It destroys fine detail with poor post processing and forget about wide angle or panorama shots. Gcam helps a lot with detail but colours aren't great.

May be an unpopular opinion but if your main concern is camera, the Pixel 3a might be worth looking at.
I only say 3a to also save some money. The Pixel 3 XL could be an option too, if you are willing to pay more. I just couldn't stand the notch and some performance issues that were reported by others as well.
As for the 7 Pro, the camera definitely isn't the strong point of this device, but I'm sure it does a better job than the 5. Even if software hasn't improved much, the hardware upgrade should be good enough to get better quality pictures compared to the OP5.
