TL;DR: My Sprint Nexus 5 died and I bought a replacement motherboard (different IMEI) and Sprint won't take it, claiming they cannot add MEID to system. What if I changed it to my old Sprint Nexus 5's IMEI? I am wondering how to do this and anything I would need to know about it. Thanks!
Alright, before I get started I want to let you know I have done a little searching around the forums so if you find something identical to this, I apologize. Lets also recap what I learned so you do not need to go through the same rollercoaster as me:
Sprint says non-Sprint Nexus 5 models should be interoperable with Sprint but they will not activate them
Sprint's customer support is so inconsistent you should do your research beforehand rather than replying on them for the most accurate information
It seems that there is no way to verify if Sprint will recognize a device that needs to be added to their DNA 2 database and its better to save yourself the headache and get a device that is already on Sprint's database.
Here is the whole story of what happened, you can skip to the last few paragraphs if for my question:
So, I bought a Sprint Nexus 5 at the beginning of 2014 and have loved it, so much so that I was shooting to use it until it died. Unfortunately, that solder balls on the Wi-Fi chip were not holding up as of a month ago and I lost my Wi-Fi functionality. I tried reflowing the motherboard multiple times and had no luck as the fix would only last a day then the phone would be dead again.
I found a Nexus 5 in very very bad shape for $30 on craigslist and I pulled the motherboard out of it and put it into my Sprint Nexus 5 and it worked fine! I even met the guy at a Sprint store to verify if it would work, they said it would be fine once I fixed the screen on it and was able to reset it. A few days later I swapped the motherboards and went to activate it on Sprint.com and it said they couldn't find it in their record. It was connecting to Sprint's network, although it was running into this error:

After a little research, I found out that I should go to a corporate Sprint store so they could add it to their DNA 2 database. I drove 30 minutes into the city to the nearest corporate store and after a technician looked at it, he told me the ones bought through Google Play and Sprint have the MEIDs added to the system and this one would just have to get added and then it would work fine. Then the sales associate called someone, read off the MEID to them, then gave me a ticket number and said to try it again in 2-3 days.
I did just that but it did not work and the ticket didn't register in Sprint's system. I talked to another support person and they said they did not take AT&T models and only T-Mobile ones as it is not not on their list of supported devices. I assumed it was an AT&T device as I got it with an AT&T SIM card but when I called them and provided the IMEI, they said they had no record of it ever being on their network. I also called T-Mobile and they said they do not sell locked Nexus 5 models and the IMEI looked clean (swappa also said it was not blacklisted). After this, I visited another Sprint store and they said that it had the Sprint SIM card in it and was connecting to the network so it should eventually work. yeah..
I tried calling some representatives now, one said that they only took AT&T models and not T-Mobile models. Another one said that it was locked and that is why it didn't work. Eventually one said they honestly had no idea why it was not working and suggested I call up the local corporate store again to see what was going on. I did, they gave me a number to call which was the same one the sales associate called and I filed another ticket to add my device to the DNA 2 database. I waited 2-3 days and the ticket said that it was a T-Mobile device and that is why they couldn't activate it, that is it. A support person helped me file another one and less than a day later it got the same response, I assume they did not even process that second ticket.
Honestly, I am unsure the exact reason why they will not activate the phone but after talking to many people from Sprint about it, I have given up on trying to figure out why they refuse to recognize the device on their network. It really bugs me how inconsistent they have been with me so I am shooting to find a way around it. In the meantime, I bought a new Wi-Fi chip that I plan to put onto the old Sprint Nexus 5 motherboard. Although, today I came up with the idea of swapping the IMEIs.
I am unsure about the legality of doing it, although I own the device that I will be stealing the IMEI from so I am confident that it is for a reason that any IMEI-switching laws are not there for.
Would someone have the expertise to guide me through this process or suggest a different route? I am resourceful enough to take a to do list of swapping an IMEI and go from that.
Also, if I were to do this would it create complications when traveling around the world and popping local SIM cards into my phone?
Thanks for your time to read this and bring on the advice!
(If it were not obvious, I am open to any advice other than to give up. Trust me, I am close to that point.. I am aware I can just buy a replacement phone as well, I am just worried about how I can make this current phone work.)
No. The information can be used for illegal purposes. Sorry. You would need specialist equipment too… of course i don't know if backing up the efs file from the sprint board to the other would work...
Altering the imei of a device is illegal (even if you own both devices) As such it is banned here.

Well as my unfortunate luck has it, I wanted to upgrade my old Nexus 4 to a LG G2 D801 unit. I bought one new-refurbished off ebay and it just arrived recently.
I tried to put in my WIND mobile sim card and realized the phone is not detecting it. After looking into the issue for the majority of the day, it seems that the phone is hard/sim locked.
I went into the area where one would go to unlock the phone, only to be greeted by this unfortunate message.

Now first thing I did was start searching the interwebz....and I can't seem to find much on this.
I am not sure what I can do. The shipping back to China, well that's out of the question due to the high cost.
I can't use the phone as it's a T-Mobile device.
I can't unlock the phone because it's hard locked.
Is there anything I can do to get it working? Does anybody know how I could possibly reset the counter for this?
Thank you in advance.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
Unfortunally the phone is locked and only the T-Mobile carrier can work on it .
It is locked from factory default state. So there is nothing you can do to unlock it (from what i know).

Hello, thanks for the reply. That's unfortunate for me I guess.
Now when you say, it's locked from the factory default state...If I drive down to the states and buy a T-Mobile LG G2 from the store, would that be also hardlocked?
I am trying to send this phone back to China and I know T-Mobile stores still have the LG G2 as certified pre-owned.

Yes if you buy another T-Mobile phone, you will stick on T-Mobile only and you will not have the ability to use other carrier other than T on that phone... But you will still be able to Root and make all those stuff but to change carrier will not be able to.

Thank you Nilac.
I am a bit confused. The phone I received, it seems like the SIM code unlock was entered 10 times wrong and thus is why the phone is hard locked to T-mobile now.
If I buy a phone from the T-Mobile store, it will be hardlocked also? I don't understand why it would be, since many people have those phones unlocked?

Unlocked but not "Unlocked" from carrier they still stick with that carrier.
If you are looking for example on the S6 forum you will see that there are separated forums for Verizon, T-Mobile etc... They are separated because the phone is not exactly the same as the international model as the carrier modified it, so a separated development needs to be done for that phone.....
You simply cannot uncarrier (from what i know) only if you took your phone to a professional guy who is super expert and can do it, but from what i know it's impossible to uncarrier a phone.... Better always to get an international one in order to avoid these problems

I think maybe I confused you or myself.
The T-Mobile LG G2 will work on the AWS frequency that I require here in Canada for WIND mobile.
If the phone is locked to T-mobile, I could use a service online, provide them the IMEI and the network the phone came from and then I would be given the unlock code to allow the phone to read a SIM card other then T-Mobile.
Example video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m4ru062k_M
Notice when he puts in the prompt to get to the network settings, he can put in a PIN. When I tried that, I get the locked message.

Ahh, yes i remember that i saw it also on Samsung Updates, a section where to unlock it....
Well it remains to you just to try then
I have a factory unlocked 6a that I'm wanting to buy, but guy thinks it may/may not have a lock put on from a carrier. Not sure if he means a financial lock or what. I'm needing it to be clean on both VZW and TMO, but honestly don't care if it has a lock on ATT (no signal here). I've ran dozen of the free imei ones, but since not of them tap into the gsma database, it's not real data. Anyone here able/willing to run a quick check for an old soul? I can pm the imei privately.
If you haven't already done so, you could try this for Verizon:
IMEI Information
Or this for TMO:
https://www.t-mobile.com/resources/bring-your-own-phone
Thanks I have already. Verizon seems to be only a basic band check, nothing deeper. T-Mobile does though appear to dive deeper with this message. Just trying to get clarification. Doesn't help that my OCD won't let this go ha

How can it be factory unlocked but also locked by a carrier?
Either you bought it from a carrier or didn't.

I'm assuming it's a financial lock. But I have no way to find out.
Well, if the guy isn't sure, that kind of sounds like you should buy from someone else.
Swappa has pretty good deals on this phone already.
Yeah maybe so. Trying to make a good deal work ha. So is it definitive that A12 Dec and newer patches have broken the temporary carrier unlock pixel 6 trick?
You can check the IMEI through Swappa's IMEI checker, it does check it against the GSMA registry.
Alternatively you can buy a 6a off of Swappa and not have to worry about it being network blocked etc.

Sadly Swappa doesn't give any details. In fact for a test, I used an imei from a phone that definitely does have a financial lock, and Swappa took it. It just seems any of the public searches are not a legit check.

Definitely shows details for me.
Also if you happened to check an IMEI from an AT&T finance locked phone, it will show as allowed because AT&T does not actually blacklist phones for installment plan nonpayment.

Gotcha. Any of the unlock carrier tricks work on a Spectrum phone I wonder? Not much data out there concerning.
I've come across a newer one that supposedly works on the Dec A13. The adb delete config doesn't work past the Dec patch from what I understand.

I'm pretty sure you need an account with Tmobile to unlock the device. That is the correct and legal way.
The phone also has to be paid off (to T-Mobile). If the person never paid off T-Mobile, then T-Mobile won't unlock it.
You must be a T-Mobile USA customer and meet all of the SIM Unlock Policy requirements for T-Mobile to SIM unlock any device. You also must be the original owner.

Any recommendation on a reputable online unlock service? My S22 Ultra is locked to Smart (PH)
I have a similar problem. I bought an new s908u with uscellular lock from an official seller on eBay and i live in Europe, i tried the unlock band guide from another post, but this didn't help. I don't have an us sim card, but i have read that if you have a network lock and can put in a sim from the original country and make a minimum 5 minutes call it should unlock itself. But before i buy one overseas, can someone maybe verify if this really works? Because first i didn't even get a message to fill in a network code from uscellular, but now i have s908u1 firmware on it, it askes for it. So my question, can someone verify this method will work with any us sim card in Europe to unlock its network lock? and if not what are my possibilities to unlock it myself with software? 3rd party asked 100+ dollars for it. if possible keep the knox and al security things untouched, i already contacted SAMKEY and they say it is not supported and they are the only reputable one i know of. So i think i am stuck because the seller had a no return policy and i was not aware of the fact that there was an international version of snapdragon, this is what happends when you don't do your research well enough first

i read somewhere else it won't. IF you have 200 dollars to spare unlockboot.com can unlock it, i talked to them today i thought it was 35 dollars, but i had misread it, it was 200 for the s22 ultra, so i got immediately my refund. I am not related in any manner but i was trying stuff with SAMFW and there tool works for certain things, and they recommended unlockboot.com and i gave it a try. But 200 is to much for me at the moment, so i want to find another way. If someone has an sim card from the country of where the phone was bought, i read you can use that and call for 5 minutes, and it should unlock it and then you can use any card. i don't have any usa card so can test it

I got my Tmobile s22 ultra unlocked without the device unlock app in India and was charged $150
Network unlocking a Samsung which is locked to T-mobile is a lot harder than unlocking many phones, as T-mobile feature built in programs in the S22 which prohibit unlocking via easy ways.
Obviously it would be far better to just go through T-mobile and have it unlocked through their system. In this case it was not possible.
Because of this I went to Telegram to get help with it. Someone advertised their service to help, at $50 USD, a lot cheaper than other services I found from Google. So I went ahead with it.
What ensued was me being taken for a massive ride. I first had to download a remote USB redirector so he could access the phone files through my computer. No problem. All seemed to be going well until I received these messages

Whether the photos are legitimate I am not sure, they simply look as if they are taken straight from a generic hacking website.
Where the phone would be registered and to which server I am not sure. Foolish as I am, I believed him, and sent the $30 through.
Hours later I receive the following
At no point did I say I was a technician.
And of course there is a solution, let me guess, it involves more money...
Guessed it. I am no expert but I didn't know that paying for firmware was a thing. I believed it was open sourced currently. Am I wrong?
Anyhow that's where we are at now, I am unsure how to proceed. Considering just cutting my losses.
Obviously re-reading this and putting it into words I feel like an idiot.
But at the time I was generally trusting of the process, as this serviceman has decent reviews. But then, it's not hard to fake reviews these days is it.
Why did T-mobile need to network lock their phones even though it has been paid off. I don't understand how it's legal for them to block a phone's service like that. Sadface.

Return it if possible.
Otherwise contact Tmobile. As long as it's paid for off, not reported stolen, they should unlock it. See if New Zealand attorney general etc offers any kind of recourse if all that fails.
People have denied that this even is something that can be on this phone. I've search everywhere any advice, I reached out to my carrier, I've even just given it time. The checkin dialer code verifies on connected to Internet but still, my OEM unlock is grayed out and says connect to the Internet or contact your carrier. It's some bs. I've read this is what Verizon models will display and it's a lost cause but this was a brand new tmo pixel 7 pro and I triple checked the packaging it has the T-Mobile information inside the box and the seal states it tmo. I just wanna unlock my bootloader. I've ran out of ideas and looked everywhere, so I'm posting to get some advice please if you have anything lemme know.

And what did the carrier say?
Regardless of which carrier you have, you must fully pay off the device before you can have them normally allow for OEM unlocking if you did not purchase the "factory unlocked" version of the device. Of course, there are ways around that via contacting your carrier before fully paying off the device. But you mentioned that you had contacted them.
So, as @bobby janow said: what did the carrier say?

But its a brand new phone. I have the op 10 pro still on contract rooted unlocked obv and twrp on it as of a few days ago. Just this phone is being weird

Can I really complain that much!?!?!
Btw I have discovered a lot of Verizon deep links and bs in activity launcher does anyone know what numbers of the IMEI determine the carrier for verizon
I just got my Pixel 7 PRO yestersday. In the same day I had it unlocked and a custom ROM put on it. Although I was honest and told them I needed it unlocked for development reasons. Plus I've had 3 phones through them that were sim unlocked before being paid off. I guess part of it might be a trust thing.
I'll just get a new pixel it's just a dumb fault I guess yes I know it has to be paid to do the permanent unlock except through Twitter it's a strange issue that I have

They can do it. They're just choosing not to. The same day I got my pixel 7 pro I had it unlocked. So I know they can do it

The carrier had no clue what it was and they weren't sure what to do I spoke with several people and nothing. ive gotten many devices unlocked by pestering the Twitter folk till they unlock it and here is the kicker I've had 2 tmo people try to unlock it now it didn't let them and even paid a company to try and it says it is blocked for potential motherboard replacement. But its a brand new phone. I have the op 10 pro still on contract rooted unlocked obv and twrp on it as of a few days ago. Just this phone is being weird

@avid_droid went through the exact same thing (t-mobile, not first time unlocking, talking through twitter, reaching reps who don' t know anything, etc.)...
I'll link his thread speaking on it below...maybe you can commiserate together
