Color flickering & unresponsive phone after screen replacement - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 5 fell on the ground and I ordered new replacement screen on eBay. I successfully changed the screen and the phone was working fine for 1 week. Next morning I was playing on my phone and it suddenly became very hot in the bottom of the screen and there was a lot of color flickering as shown in the video: vid.me/hGXm (the site doesn't allow me to post outside links, so i removed http..)
I wiped the software, but it didn't help. Screen replacement provider has asked me to rub the connector port flex cable with some alcohol, but it didn't help. What could be the problem?
Thanks in advance.

That's what you get for buying screens off eBay. There is a OEM LG parts supplier in Portugal that has genuine screens

Ask for replacement screen or refund. Have had bad screen sent to me before for a different phone

a website would be nice

missunderstood you

I agree with @mymeatb18.
Third party screens are much cheaper and usually work very well for the price.
I have replaced the screen on 10 nexus 5 phones and also got a really bad screen. The seller replaced it and everything has been fine for months.

I just put a new screen and housing last night to my wife's phone. lots of internal pieces to swap out, took a good time while being extremely careful not to damage anything. having trouble with the battery now. it is not wanting to charge. the battery was replaced a couple months ago with an ebay OEM original claim haha. what a coincidence it stops charging the same time I remove it to replace. it must have been junk to begin with

The USB flex cable may have been damaged during the swap? Any loose connections?
I have swapped several screens and only had one minor problem out of 10 screens.

[Q] help with t-mo g2x screen/digi

Hi
i bought this used g2x and when i got it and powered on there are lines going across the screen is this a Digitizer issue or a screen issue so i can replace accordingly.
i took pictures of it if it helps.
the screen responds to finger tap so i guess digi is ok.....
Thanks in advance for your help.
I would deffinately have demanded my money back. Well, its going to be the lcd screen. there's good and bad news here. Good: will be far easier to replace than the digitizer. Bad: from experience, the LCD costs more. I think for my last phone, the LCD was slightly twice the cost of the digitizer.
The reason its your screen though is because the digitizer is only conductive glass. It doesn't produce any light in which you would get those lines.

If you bought it through ebay and the faulty lcd wasn't described as a problem, you need to file a report so you can get a refund and prevent it from happening to others.

It is possible that if the seller repaired the LCD that the ribbon cable connecting the display to the logic board shifted and came loose during transit.
Contact the seller before you do ANYTHING... first try to get him to replace/refund, if they won't, find out if they replaced the screen or digitizer themselves. If yes, you may be looking at simply reattaching a cable.

Selling tablet for parts. Will sell individual parts or all together.

MOD EDIT: Sorry, can't leave this kind of thread open outside the Marketplace.
Thank you,

I have a G tablet that suddenly quit working. Both the touchscreen and LCD screen are in near perfect condition. The touchscreen was used with a screen protector, but there are a few fine scratches none of which are noticeable during use. The housing is in great condition minus scratches on the back from normal wear. The power socket was loose which I had soldered back to the motherboard by a local guy which might have been what cause the problem. I originally thought the battery had gone bad and bought a replacement battery which did not help, so I think the motherboard itself might have gone bad. So in total, I have a tablet, two batteries, power cord, USB cord, and leather case which works as a stand. I could sell parts individually or as a packaged deal. I would $100 or best offer for the whole lot. Message me for more details. And just FYI I was running the custom ROM Flashback.

Best place to order a screen replacement?

I dropped my nexus 5 getting out if the car and now the glass screen is shattered at a corner. The digitizer seems fin and every where on the screen is responsive.
So I was wondering if there were a place i can order just the LCD screen and without the digitizer/housing.

The digitizer and LCD are fused together.. You need to replace them both!
If I were you, I would send it to a LG Service outlet and let them replace it. The ones you order online may or may not work + you need to do everything yourself. However, if you're good at it, then ordering online will certainly save you few bucks!
As the phone is only $350. Spending anything more then $150 won't do it for me as I'd rather buy a new or used phone. I was hoping there was a place to get just the glass part.

The only way that makes sense is if you can get a phone that is as good or better than the n5 for $150 or less.
I dropped mine, three days after it was delivered, no case as it had not yet arrived
The corner of the case was dented and the screen shattered but still fully useabIe.
I was wary about knock off spare parts and my skill with glue and tape if I went DIY so I sent mine in to LG service centre. The cost was £114.67 including Special delivery both ways ( Insured, tracked, next day delivery).
The worst part was the waiting, it took them 10 days to give me an estimate of he cost and three more days to get it back to me. It is good as new now and still has warranty.
I've just checked, thats about $190! So I uderstand your dilemma.

This is Elena from parts4repair.com,we can offer only oem glass for you,(the original one is out of stock now),and I am a new user,so i can't offer the link for you, maybe you will be interested to visit our website,or contact with us by [email protected].
Please notice that:the outer glass lens is without any function of digitizer or display. and only glass replacement is a professional job, and special tools are required, too. By the way, glass and the screen are bonded together, so both separating them and gluing them together are difficult job. Please sure you can do it before order.
Hope can help you,Thanks.
Never try to replace just the glass. You'd need loca glue & a uv light to cure it. The glue could get into other components and totally ruin your phone. And even if by a small chance you can pull it off, it will never be 100 percent. Always replace the whole assembly. - coming from somebody who has tried to replace just the glass.

you are right,it is very hard to get it done right by people who mostly have no experience,so please think twice before do it if it is first time for you to change it.And we also can offer LG N5 D820 a full screen assembly(front housing cover + digitizer + lcd screen+glass).
I used my old front housing and removed the old LCD and Glass. It was very difficult but it came out working 100%. This has been the 3rd display I have fixed and so far the most difficult. The rest of the parts were really easy though. Just separating the LCD and housing was painstakingly time consuming and dangerous.

Screen already cracked :(

Hasn't even been 2 weeks and the screen cracked. I have had an Incipio Dual Pro case on it since I got the phone. Today I dropped it literally 2 feet from the ground and it wasn't a hard fall and the screen cracked. I am beyond disappointed. In 15 years of phones I have never cracked a screen. Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible to replace a screen on this? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, no. I have never used them before and never needed to (I have dropped phones before and never had any issues with the screen). I guess I will be using them going forward if I get another Note.....
I've seen plenty of phones that had cracked screens worth screen protectors. Personally, I don't think they prevent screen cracks at all... Scratches, yes, cracks, no.
I'd call samsung and find out what your options are. Obviously you're going to pay some money if its not covered under insurance, but with a 800$ phone, it would be worth paying to get fixed in my opinion. Around where I live there are places in the mall that would repair broken screens, but given how new this phone is it may be difficult to find a place like that with a high quality repair.
I haven't received my case in the mail yet, but the phone feels so damn nice it's a shame to have to cover it up.
Honestly if this is your first time in 15 years of owning phones to have a cracked screen, I'd say thats a fantastic record and you shouldn't feel too bad. Everyone has had a cracked screen at one point or another. Just get it repaired. There is no way you'd want to go on using the phone for a year or longer with a cracked screen, given how nice this phone is.
My suggestion for a case is to get one of the ones that wrap all the way around the phone with the front cover flip. They are not as convenient obviously, but in my opinion they are the ONLY cases that offer real screen protection. Back-only cases or even plastic/glass covers over the screen are simply not shock resistant enough if the screen manages to hit the ground first. Even back-only cases with raised bezels around the screen won't do you any good if the screen lands on an uneven surface (like rough pavement) because all it takes is one rock near the middle of the screen to destroy it after a drop.
Have samsung repair it if possible, and stick to a flip case for protection all the way around the phone, including the screen. I've had a lot of phones get cracks, scratches or dents ever since I moved to touch screen phones, and the only one I managed to keep for over a year without any damage was my HTC ONE MAX with one of the flip style cases like I mentioned. They can be a little bit of a pain to get use to at first, especially when wanting to take pictures with the camera, but the added protection over the screen is worth it in the long run in my opinion. That or invest in insurance, because this phone has glass all over it and is basically guaranteed to get some damage/cracks if it's ever dropped.

Of course you can. There are many video guides on YouTube. For samsung galaxy note 5 screen replacement part you can check at www.hcqs.com.cn.
So did you get the cracked screen fixed? Was it only the glass or the whole screen which needed fixing?

Dang, sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can find a suitable solution
Repairing your own phone can be about more than just the money!

I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. I sent it to Samsung for repair. When I got it back, a week later, the left side of the home button was failing to work about 10-25% of the time. I sent it back to Samsung and the replaced the screen/LCD once again. They sent it back to via UPS on the 11-17-2015. Then it was into the New Orleans terminal on 11-18-2015 and scheduled for delivery on Thursday th 19th. It wasn't delivered. I contact UPS on Friday the 20th and was told to contact the Shipper (Samsung). I contacted Samsung and was told they would file a claim with UPS and would have the issue resolved within 8 days!! I asked the service rep why in the world would they not just go ahead and supply me with another phone? He said their protocol required them to file the claim with UPS and they wait for the UPS investigation into the missing package to be completed. I asked him had he ever heard of an investigation into a missing phone shipment result in the phone being found. He absolutely would not answer that question!!
I really, really wish I would have replaced the screen myself now!!!!! At this point I've been without my NEW Note 5 for 7days - first repair, 7 more day's - second repair and 4 days, and counting, lost/stolen during shipment. Luckily I did not sell my Note 3 after purchasing the Note 5.
Lesson learned.
the same thing happened to me yesterday. my note 5 is just 3 weeks old and it fell just about a foot above the ground; the fall wasn't that hard. i thought it wont damage the phone but when i checked, the display got this curvy like lines so i restarted the phone but the same still appeared. i checked the other parts like the camera, the sensors etc and they were all working. so i turned the phone off. after a few mins, i needed to use the internet so i turned my phone back on. i noticed a purple color developed on the top left part of the screen so i turned the screen off. after 30 mins, the purple color had already spread on different parts of the screen. now, the entire screen is covered with this purple color. i know the damage is with the LCD but its kinda weird because the screen didn't get any cracks neither were there any dents on the phone which means that the fall was not that hard. my s3 suffered worse falls and it is still alive and kicking. note 5 is for sure a very fragile phone.
Note 5 isn't any more fragile than any other phone - you just had bad luck.
For example, I've dropped my note 5 once with no case, and 2x with a thin tpu case from 4 feet to a tile floor each time and no damage.
It is purely luck on how it lands.

i cracked my note 5 screen it was fully charged after a week it runned out off charge when i try charging it doesnt notify if its charging. my question is is it because of the screen of has the charging port also been affected

Touch does not work, replace digitizer?

The LCD works perfectly. Images that are displayed are correct, colors are good, but the touch aspect of it does not work. Occasionally the touch would come back but 95% of the time, the screen doesn't respond to touches. The phone wasn't dropped or anything. It just decided one day to crap out on the touch. Would it be easier to just replace the digitizer and not waste money to buy the whole screen assembly? Not to mention the replacement screens on eBay are probably not as good as the original OEM screen.
Much easier to replace everything in my opinion; i.e. mid-frame, digitizer, and LCD. The biggest drawback is the cost if you purchase an OEM screen instead of a third-party screen from Aliexpress or ebay.

Yea, I figured. Was watching a video on replacing just the digitizer. Seems like a huge pain and I'd have to spend more for tools as well to separate the screen. Where would you go about purchasing an OEM screen?
I purchased two of them from Aliexpress.com. I also purchased a replacement battery and tempered glass screen protector since I had the phones taken apart. Mine screens cost around $33 USD for black. The red looks interesting too.
One thing I noticed about the original and the replacement is the fact that the replacement does not seem as bright, but I only noticed this when I held the screens side by side. On its own, the replacement seemed quite nice for the price.
So the replacement screens you purchased wasn't original LG? Then again I doubt LG would sell the screen assembly by itself to consumers. I see ebay selling screens with a frame for <$40; I've never tried aliexpress before.
The screens I purchased were not from LG. The LG screens are over $150 each in Canada.
The screens on ebay and Aliexpress are probably very similar in quality. I went with Ali because they were a bit cheaper and I got the replacement in 2 weeks via registered air mail.
I purchased a screen from Aliexpress, replaced it, and the touch issue still persists. The screen works fine, but the touch just doesn't want to work. I guess I just wasted the cost of the screen to fix an issue that wasn't the screen's fault. What else can I do at this point?
The front glass does not contain the touch screen part.
It(the touch screen) is included in the layers of the lcd screen itself.
Your fault is maybe corrosion or malfunction of the mainboard concerning the touch screen part.
Try to clean the connector with some izopropylic alcohol, and maybe you can restore the functionality.
If not, then try changing the motherboard.
You're welcome
