Touch does not work, replace digitizer? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The LCD works perfectly. Images that are displayed are correct, colors are good, but the touch aspect of it does not work. Occasionally the touch would come back but 95% of the time, the screen doesn't respond to touches. The phone wasn't dropped or anything. It just decided one day to crap out on the touch. Would it be easier to just replace the digitizer and not waste money to buy the whole screen assembly? Not to mention the replacement screens on eBay are probably not as good as the original OEM screen.

Much easier to replace everything in my opinion; i.e. mid-frame, digitizer, and LCD. The biggest drawback is the cost if you purchase an OEM screen instead of a third-party screen from Aliexpress or ebay.

Yea, I figured. Was watching a video on replacing just the digitizer. Seems like a huge pain and I'd have to spend more for tools as well to separate the screen. Where would you go about purchasing an OEM screen?

I purchased two of them from Aliexpress.com. I also purchased a replacement battery and tempered glass screen protector since I had the phones taken apart. Mine screens cost around $33 USD for black. The red looks interesting too.
One thing I noticed about the original and the replacement is the fact that the replacement does not seem as bright, but I only noticed this when I held the screens side by side. On its own, the replacement seemed quite nice for the price.

So the replacement screens you purchased wasn't original LG? Then again I doubt LG would sell the screen assembly by itself to consumers. I see ebay selling screens with a frame for <$40; I've never tried aliexpress before.

The screens I purchased were not from LG. The LG screens are over $150 each in Canada.
The screens on ebay and Aliexpress are probably very similar in quality. I went with Ali because they were a bit cheaper and I got the replacement in 2 weeks via registered air mail.

I purchased a screen from Aliexpress, replaced it, and the touch issue still persists. The screen works fine, but the touch just doesn't want to work. I guess I just wasted the cost of the screen to fix an issue that wasn't the screen's fault. What else can I do at this point?

The front glass does not contain the touch screen part.
It(the touch screen) is included in the layers of the lcd screen itself.
Your fault is maybe corrosion or malfunction of the mainboard concerning the touch screen part.
Try to clean the connector with some izopropylic alcohol, and maybe you can restore the functionality.
If not, then try changing the motherboard.
You're welcome

The top of the screen, the plastic layer. Where the HTC logo is printed on. That thing is broken. So the touch functonality isnt working anymore. And it is scratched. Where can i buy such a thing?
Ebay has good deals. What you need is called the digitizer. Such as: touch pro digitizer on ebay. I just had the same problem as you. I dropped my phone and something scratched the very outside layer of the screen. A small patch started peeling away and the touch screen stopped working.
Some sellers on ebay offer both the digitizer and LCD as a package, but unless the display is also not working, you can save money and buy just the digitizer.
I ordered mine on http://shop.brando.com/

infuse digitizer replacement

do i have to replace the whole lcd. i see digitizers on ebay for like 20 bucks...
I have been told that they must be replaced together
Yes, the screen, glass, and digitizer and all that are fused together. As far as I know you can't replace one without replacing it all, bringing your price closer to $180. I've got a broken screen now as well. Wish the glass was an easy (or rather cheap) replacement.
Edit: I see the glass only on eBay, but I'll give you warning that the SAMOLED screen is glued to the glass pretty well. Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, there's a 95% chance you'll break the LCD trying to separate it from the glass, then you'll definitely have to spend the $180 or so for the whole thing.

Broken screen

Ive cracked my screen and ive found i can buy a new screen and lcd for 169.99. or i can buy just the over glass for $20. I heard you can use a heat gun to seperate the glass and the lcd. Has anyone done this and can tell me if it works?

Mostly likely the digitizer will get destroyed in the process. Buy the complete unit.
Someone said a few days ago he only replaced the glass but he had to break it in order to separate it, use the search I bet you'll find it quickly. If you can afford it take the whole thing, less chances of screwing up your phone, and you could always keep the old lcd for a test run with a glass only or in case you somehow manage to crack it again.
Still I'd suggest buying a screen protector once you fix your screen, costs less, barely noticeable and saves a whole lot of money and hassle.

This. I cracked my screen and bought an entire new one for $160 via ebay. It took 10 minutes to take apart and install the new one and be back up and running. I also bought the Otterbox Defender, honestly...works like a charm. It's durable, nice, feels good and it doesn't feel as bulky as it looks. The only down fall about a case with a screen protector is that the Galaxy series has a screen that goes all the way to the edge of the phone (like most modern phones now) so hitting stuff on the VERY edge of the screen is more difficult because of the raised case.
Buy the screen and a protector and if you are still curious, buy the replacement glass for your broken screen and try it. Worst case, you're out 20 bucks and have a completely broken screen (would be out the other $160 for the new screen you'd have to buy if you mess up any way) or best case, you're out $20 bucks but have a new screen incase you ever break it again.
Unscrew the 7 screws on the back (one is above the sim slot, keep it separate as it's a different size) and once you take the back piece off, there's one small black screw holding the board to the screen. The phone is 3 pieces, screen, board and back piece, it's extremely simple. Just pop all the circuit things with your nail or whatever (there's like 6 total). You have to pry your headphone jack off as it's glued unless your new screen comes with one...doubt it.
someone posted they got sammy to replace it for 189, call sammy up and see what they say, i think thats a good price
Forget Glass

I repair phones and have replaced Lcd/digi assembly on both I727 and T989. No way you get that apart without busting the exiting assembly up. The cheapest part can be order via Ebay from China and you'll have to wait about two weeks for part. Or there's the company I used in San Fancisco at gounlock dot com that has it listed at $154 I believe. They have a listing on ebay under SkyStarTrade and I offered em $148 including shipping and the took it. I had the part in 3 days. Would highly recommend!!!!!!
I just got off the phone with Sammi Friday. The Rep quoted me $158 to replace the glass. So if they mess up the digitizer is on them. Cheaper than I was able to find the combo anywhere on line. So tomorrow my phone heads back to Sammi. I'll let you know in about three weeks how the service was and whether they honored their quote.
And exactly 8 days from the date that I shipped it to Sammi I have a my phone back. They replaced the LCD, bezel and glass for $158 as quoted. Not only that but they paid all shipping and used UPS 2nd day air both ways. And I'm still under warranty by having them take care of it. All in all couldn't be happier with the service. So if anyone needs the glass fixed my vote would go to Sammi.

Thanks.. Got a replacemnt at new Delhi gaffar market ... Just 2900 inr .. 40 dollars
I have ordered this one
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Fast...90.html?spm=2114.13010208.99999999.274.5R2YVv
for a common dreaded problem of having vertical green lines appearing on LCD from nowhere (although my fault, it got it dropped on flat floor from my shoulder height a couple of times). In my case the green lines are appearing on the edge panel itself only, so the old LCD maybe useful for me to keep just for an emergency replacement as well.
Does this one looks ok, I mean any of the replacement LCD+Frame+Digitizer combo ordered from either ebay or china would rather be coming from only a handful or sources (resellers), and maybe only one or two manufacturers (who might be manufacturing it as OEM as well).
How was your experience with the replacement LCD, does it looks and feels just like original in screen clarity, colours and touch responsiveness.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

My phone is working fine to this day without an issue. I don't know how that particular replacement will be. Let us know when you replace your screen.

Drop damage

Hi, I have recently dropped my S7 and my screen broke, but it’s only smal black dot on side of amoled and one line trough glass. My biggest problem is that lower part of screen digitizer stoped working. I’ve searched all over ebay for new screen assembly with amoled and digitizer but it’s expensive ~170$. So I was thinking, can I replace only digitizer, they cost about 30-50$? I’m not sure because every video on YouTube that replaced only digitizer had fully working amoled. Do you guys have any experience? Any advice is appreciated
Hello,
As seen on some drop test videos, sometimes screen can be totally messed up but digitizer can still be working good. So my guess is that they work independently and so a new digitizer could work good even if the screen as some dead areas or lines etc...
But due to the fact that Samsung glue the glass with the digitizer and with the screen panel, it's a very difficult process to just remove the glass without scratching or breaking the Amoled panel. Better be well prepared to it, have the right tools and have a lot of dexterity and patience. It's already a big pain to separate the screen for the glass, so if you're planning to separate and replace only the digitizer, then good luck :-/
Before trying this, you still should call some repair centers to see how much it would cost for a screen replacement, but unfortunately it is most likely to be expensive. Also, be aware that buying yourself a screen replacement doesn't guarantee you that it will be an Amoled. A year ago, my brother broke his OnePlus 3 screen, and it was almost impossible to find an Amoled screen replacement, their description was saying Amoled, but by reading well, we could always find somewhere "TFT" or "LCD" which are not Amoled.
In the end, you have to be aware than any flagship phone cost an arm to repair, especially the screen as everything is glued and made for you not to be able to repair it yourself. So it is very highly recommended to protect your phone with cases and screen protectors (plastic screen protectors protect the screen better from shocks than glass screen protectors, even if plastic feels cheaper). Unless you have a lot of money and can easily pay a repair, protect your phone!
Sorry, that's all I can do for you...
