Hi, I have recently dropped my S7 and my screen broke, but it’s only smal black dot on side of amoled and one line trough glass. My biggest problem is that lower part of screen digitizer stoped working. I’ve searched all over ebay for new screen assembly with amoled and digitizer but it’s expensive ~170$. So I was thinking, can I replace only digitizer, they cost about 30-50$? I’m not sure because every video on YouTube that replaced only digitizer had fully working amoled. Do you guys have any experience? Any advice is appreciated
Hello,
As seen on some drop test videos, sometimes screen can be totally messed up but digitizer can still be working good. So my guess is that they work independently and so a new digitizer could work good even if the screen as some dead areas or lines etc...
But due to the fact that Samsung glue the glass with the digitizer and with the screen panel, it's a very difficult process to just remove the glass without scratching or breaking the Amoled panel. Better be well prepared to it, have the right tools and have a lot of dexterity and patience. It's already a big pain to separate the screen for the glass, so if you're planning to separate and replace only the digitizer, then good luck :-/
Before trying this, you still should call some repair centers to see how much it would cost for a screen replacement, but unfortunately it is most likely to be expensive. Also, be aware that buying yourself a screen replacement doesn't guarantee you that it will be an Amoled. A year ago, my brother broke his OnePlus 3 screen, and it was almost impossible to find an Amoled screen replacement, their description was saying Amoled, but by reading well, we could always find somewhere "TFT" or "LCD" which are not Amoled.
In the end, you have to be aware than any flagship phone cost an arm to repair, especially the screen as everything is glued and made for you not to be able to repair it yourself. So it is very highly recommended to protect your phone with cases and screen protectors (plastic screen protectors protect the screen better from shocks than glass screen protectors, even if plastic feels cheaper). Unless you have a lot of money and can easily pay a repair, protect your phone!
Sorry, that's all I can do for you...

I am experiancing some problems!
basically I think the manufacturer installed protective screen has come loose from the hard sensor (due to use?) and so the stylus is pushing on an air bubble, and with the software keyboard (virtual keyboard) the wrong buttons are getting pressed.
I dont know whether to cut out that layer with a scalpel (carefully) and use normal screen protectors that stick properly ... has anyone done this before?
Maybe you could apply heat to it to tighten it or something I dont know so I need help!
My phone is an alpine (xda2i) but other pdas must be having the same issue?
is it ok to cut the initial plastic screen that comes integrated with the xda?
Just make sure it is actually a protective screen and not the digitizer (the membrane that makes it touch screen and sits on the LCD) that your cutting away.
with a protective skin there should be no need to cut anything... I honestly think your talking about the digitizer - in which case take to a mobile phone specialist and they could heat sync it for you.
To check whether it is the digitizer or the crappy screen protector, you should be able to see the edge of the layer at the side, especially manufacturer orginial screen protector, they are really crappy. You should be able to seperate the layer (from the edge) with something pointy (e.g. a needle), and then peel it off from there.
If you didn't see any distinguishable edge at the edge of the screen, chances are you should not do anything yourself.

Thanks for the responses!!!
I have a feeling that it is what you are referring to as a digitizer. Do most of the mobile phone shops do this heat option? as after googling it, not much comes up, or is it referred to under a different terminology,
thanks in advance!
Rob
If your UK based you can find out more about them from apex laptops, google them...
I'm in Edinburgh, and it took me a while before I found someone willing to replace the digitizer.
This is not a common thing - but I think with the introduction of the iphone the markets for heat syncing will go up, I suggest freeing up an afternoon and go to some of those dodgy shops that offer the unlocking service, also some computer repair shop technicians might be confident in doing something of this nature.
Happy hunting!...

thanks for your help
whatever you do dont approach o2. they are ridiculous, they want to charge 350 dollars to peel off the old one and put a new on one. search ebay and you will find digitizres with screwdriver and peeling, firming tool for 15 dollars plus postage.
o2's repair guys say it "original" spares which make it so expensive....
right...........
rang up
rang up a couple of shops one doesn't do heat sync and the other does but the machines bust, he started talking about soldering etc...(does that sound like it?) but when i re-described the problem he started talking about 50 60 quid for a new screen! which I am not prepared to pay for the relatively minor problem
How is a digitiser different from a normal screen protector anyway?
(placing a normal protector on top of it sort of helped reduce the problems because it applied a little firmness over the offending area....)
O.k the digitizer is not a screen protector. The Digitizer is a membrane that sits atop the LCD.
Note: that the LCD is not a touch screen and the only thing making your device a touch sensitive is this digitizer
digitizers can be pricey, but the reason your guy is costing it at 50 - 60 quid is because he is the middle man and needs to make a profit. You can find digitizers from apex laptops or GPS midlands (links below) and buy them at trade prices
http://www.gpsmidlands.co.uk/index.php?menu=Home
http://www.apexlaptops.co.uk/touchscreens.htm
Dependant on your device will depend on the price.
My guy asked for 10 pounds to replace my screen, which I thought was more than reasonable because if he broke the LCD whilst replacing the digitizer (which he did) he was liable to replace it. Make sure that your guy will do this.
hope this helps.
after googling...
After googling for a bit, I came across someone who had these sort of problems with their own pda
http://jamescrisp.blogspot.com/2007/05/fixing-palm-treos-digitizer-touch.html
it seems that dirt stuck under the sides can cause the same kinds of problems,
after running a bit of paper under the corners of the screen I have found some interesting results, the problems I have have changed slightly and seem to rectify temporarily when I press down (rub down) on the screen...
so I might look at taking it apart with some tools off ebay or something and giving it a good clean... any recommendations on how to strip down and clean an Alpine....? actually I'll repost that in the aline forum if there isn't already a post there....
hope your confident in doing so - I'd take it to a shop if it pisses you off that much - taking it a part and cleaning might end up with you just having a big screen phone with no touch pad...
Up to you, hope your successful
do i have to replace the whole lcd. i see digitizers on ebay for like 20 bucks...
I have been told that they must be replaced together
Yes, the screen, glass, and digitizer and all that are fused together. As far as I know you can't replace one without replacing it all, bringing your price closer to $180. I've got a broken screen now as well. Wish the glass was an easy (or rather cheap) replacement.
Edit: I see the glass only on eBay, but I'll give you warning that the SAMOLED screen is glued to the glass pretty well. Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, there's a 95% chance you'll break the LCD trying to separate it from the glass, then you'll definitely have to spend the $180 or so for the whole thing.
Why do some touch screens work with cracked glass whilst others don't?
For example, recent Sony phones seem to be notorious for having screens that become completely non functional once the glass is cracked.
I have a cracked HTC, IPhone and Samsung. The touch/screen on these all work perfectly fine even though the glass is completely shattered.
Why is this? Is it poorer quality components or something got to do with how the screen assembly is put together? I thought all phones with 'ogs' displays have glass -> digitizer -> screen so don't see how this could be possible. Anyone know the answer? I think having a phone which becomes completely nonfunctional once cracked is a big downside.

Most probably, if you slip your phone, there are 2 possibilties:
1. Only the screen glass breaks and digitizer is safe (Broken screen doesn't mean touch won't work).
2. The bump caused on screen damages both screen and Digitizer too, which causes touch feedback not to work.
There are certain rare phones in which digitizer and glass screen are just a single component. Maybe just a drop of those phones could damage the whole screen+touch interface

I wouldn't call them rare. I know all new sony phones are like this If you search for 'cracked z3' or 'cracked z2' all will say touch not working. I'm sure there is many others too, Xiaomi mi3 and nexus 4 are others I can think of. I wonder if this is done on purpose so people will have to pay the extortionate repair costs? Many people would be okay using a phone with a small crack on its screen, especially if they've had it a while. But if the touch isn't working it is as useless as a brick.
It's a pretty big downside I think. I know someone who has been using a cracked iphone 4s for 2 years and has been re-cracked several times and its still fully functional.
The LCD works perfectly. Images that are displayed are correct, colors are good, but the touch aspect of it does not work. Occasionally the touch would come back but 95% of the time, the screen doesn't respond to touches. The phone wasn't dropped or anything. It just decided one day to crap out on the touch. Would it be easier to just replace the digitizer and not waste money to buy the whole screen assembly? Not to mention the replacement screens on eBay are probably not as good as the original OEM screen.
Much easier to replace everything in my opinion; i.e. mid-frame, digitizer, and LCD. The biggest drawback is the cost if you purchase an OEM screen instead of a third-party screen from Aliexpress or ebay.

Yea, I figured. Was watching a video on replacing just the digitizer. Seems like a huge pain and I'd have to spend more for tools as well to separate the screen. Where would you go about purchasing an OEM screen?
I purchased two of them from Aliexpress.com. I also purchased a replacement battery and tempered glass screen protector since I had the phones taken apart. Mine screens cost around $33 USD for black. The red looks interesting too.
One thing I noticed about the original and the replacement is the fact that the replacement does not seem as bright, but I only noticed this when I held the screens side by side. On its own, the replacement seemed quite nice for the price.
So the replacement screens you purchased wasn't original LG? Then again I doubt LG would sell the screen assembly by itself to consumers. I see ebay selling screens with a frame for <$40; I've never tried aliexpress before.
The screens I purchased were not from LG. The LG screens are over $150 each in Canada.
The screens on ebay and Aliexpress are probably very similar in quality. I went with Ali because they were a bit cheaper and I got the replacement in 2 weeks via registered air mail.
I purchased a screen from Aliexpress, replaced it, and the touch issue still persists. The screen works fine, but the touch just doesn't want to work. I guess I just wasted the cost of the screen to fix an issue that wasn't the screen's fault. What else can I do at this point?
The front glass does not contain the touch screen part.
It(the touch screen) is included in the layers of the lcd screen itself.
Your fault is maybe corrosion or malfunction of the mainboard concerning the touch screen part.
Try to clean the connector with some izopropylic alcohol, and maybe you can restore the functionality.
If not, then try changing the motherboard.
You're welcome
Hi, today my XA unfortunatelly dropped out of my hand and the glass got broken. Everything is working, It's only "spiderweb" on the screen. I've seen many offers where I can buy only glass so it's logical to me that it's possible to replace only glass without anything else but I may be wrong. So can I replace only glass?
According to my experience with tablets and phones' screen replacement, I don't recommend you to buy only the external glass screen because it's a tricky to remove it properly (due to the remains of glue which could stay on the LCD digitizer) and more trickier to stick the new one on it without having dusts or bubbles visible after the operation...
On many websites you'll be able to find the two parts already glued together as a single pack and ready to be used for your replacement.
But, as I saw on many tutorials, the XA's disassembly is particularly annoying due to the fact that the phone's external parts are glued instead of being screwed so I suggest you to be very careful before trying to do it by yourself !
Take your time and watch as much tutorials as you can for being prepared to handle any potential problems
