Baked in Voice over WiFi? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm eligible for an upgrade on my Moto X. I'm looking hard at the new S7 and so far I like what I see, but I'm wondering if anyone has heard whether or not it has Voice over WiFi baked in like the iPhone 6 has. My wife has the 6+ and all I had to was flip a toggle to enable her to use WiFi when there's no carrier signal - which is the case where we live. I'd love to see Samsung add this to the S7.

Even on the iPhone, I believe this is a carrier-specific feature. I've got a Note 5 on T-Mobile and there is also a toggle for me to turn WiFi calling on and off, so I think if you're on Tmo, or another carrier that allows it, you should be good to go.

Every smartphone I've had on TMo has had WiFi calling baked in. If you flash a custom ROM, it'll have to be based on a stock ROM. Personally, despite any initial bloat, I've found such ROMs more stable than AOSP based ones, although YMMV. I've also never been willing to give up WiFi calling, so it's always been an easy choice.

[Q] Is it possible to force switch to EDGE?

One thing that I liked about my N1 with CM7 was that I could easily switch between Edge and 3G to help save battery life. I haven't found such functionality with the Skyrocket and I have tried 3 different ROMs and none of them have been able to do it either. The best they seem to do is turn off LTE, which doesn't do much because I don't have LTE service in my area. Could it just be that I'm using the wrong ROM, or is this technically impossible, or is it that until we get the AOSP developers won't know how to get to such functionality?
Here is the thread you need. Flash the Rogers radio, then go into network selection and pick manual. It'll sit for a few but afterwards you'll be able to switch from gsm/auto to gsm only..or whatever options are in there.

[Q] CDMA/LTE Binaries & AOSP Roms?

I saw that the Binaries for GSM/LTE were posted, but didn't see anything for CDMA. I can't find the thread now, but I recall reading a post where somebody mentioned that AOSP ROMS wouldn't be fully functional on N5 phones on Sprint's network. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? If you do, please elaborate. I want to slap on AOKP or CM 11 once they are available. Since this is a Triband device, I hadn't consider AOSP ROMS would be an issue using Sprint.
It's disappointing isn't it ? Developers ignoring a genuine question because the lot if then don't care about CDMA even though it's a nexus and their supposed to improve upon the device and they completely alienated sprint users on aosp Roms. They refuse to even acknowledge LTE not working on aosp roms and don't even treat it as a bug.

I have had the ****s of CDMA anyhow -- I'm tired of the locked down mentality. I use Ting (and love their service), but they use Sprint as their backbone and, just once, it'd be nice if I could use any damn phone I want simply by popping in a SIM and adjusting the APN settings. I think I need to try a decent ATT MVNO for a while. I returned my nexus 5 and will try again in January. The audio issues caused by software and manufacturing goofs are unacceptable to me. I'm more than happy to switch to a GSM Gnex for now, to get away from CDMA.
Is there a list of AOSP ROMs that will allow full functionality on Ting (or any CDMA network, if they're all the same)? Are there viable alternatives?
On my Galaxy S3, I ran a Touchwiz-based ROM to work around the issue. I don't mind using the stock ROM for now, but I'd like to know if I should just look for a new MVNO that won't cause these headaches.

Tmobile customer - Safe to buy Unlocked phones? New upcoming Tmo bands?

Sorry, I'm not too much in the know, but I heard there is some sort of new update coming in the near future that will improve various aspects of the S7 like better in building reception etc.
So what do I need to be on the look out for? This deal from Target is pretty fair on top of my 5% Red Card bonus. Would this phone work with whatever update Tmo pushes out to receive the full benefits vs a tmobile puchased S7?

Nope, your link is for the international version, which won't get VoLTE, wifi calling, or updates. You want either the 930T or 930u. Anything else won't work properly.
Edit for clarification - The upcoming changes for the S7 are for more advanced LTE functionality. The extended range/building penetration are already in place, it's Band 12 LTE. The international version you linked will receive data on this band, but you CANNOT call/sms on it, as it's a data only band. The only calling/SMS that can be done on it would be on VoLTE, which you will not have.
So yeah, you'd be getting a crippled phone with none of the advantages you want.
In the last week, the rom maker below got a Note 7 port working on a 930f with T-mobile VOLTE + wifi calling + video calling. Assuming you root and want custom roms, there is an viable option in the international model.

That being said for the OP:
Why target, swappa is $200 less on either model.
The international model has no US warranty.
The international model is faster with a better battery life but is slighltly weaker playing games: having both for now, completely stock, the 930f is slightly faster feeling. On the other hand, it is like night and day to compare a custom/tweaked rom/kernel of a 930F to a engineering bootloader based 930t's stock rooted rom (the custom roms seem to remove video calls)
The US model (if root matters) has a root solution that can be negated in future builds.
The international model's root trips knox, unlike the US version, reducing the resale value.

Is the Link+ an alternative to Wifi-Calling?

I have a weak cellphone signal in my area and would like to use the Wifi-calling feature which can help me use wifi network to relay the cellphone signal (didn't buy any 4G plan but on 2/3G). As this phone doesn't have Wifi-calling enabled (at least for T-mobile in US), I wonder if the Link+ works as wifi-calling should do? I haven't gotten my nano-SIM card yet and hence cannot test it. Thanks.
Hi Guys, I am T-mobile user and switch to Honor 8 from Motorola Nexus 6 about three months back and after use around week felt that this is the best Phone ever better than iPhone 6S. After few days used this phone found that it's doesn't have WiFi calling feature which does have on Nexus 6 because at my work place very barely T-mobile signals reach. Try to find some blogs and got that will get this feature in next update vEMUI 5.0 with Android 7.0 which i got recently few days back. but still this feature doesn't show up or working at all. now I am feeling like this is the wrong choise coz it not supporting WiFi calling which normally most smartphones does support.
Huwai Team please address this and let us know if any fix is available to overcome this.

Phone upgrade (g925a to n920p) on Mint Sim (T-Mobile)

Alright... I'm so excited for my 2nd note to come. This is also my 2nd sprint but who cares right? My last note was the Note 4 from at&t and i kinda miss it. But the battery kept overheating and I couldn't flash a rom on the phone. But I know I can if I have a sprint or a tmobile galaxy. Lol I seen YouTube and XDA.. So What's the Best Rom for this note?
I need everything for this thing.( Recovery,Rom...(S8/Note 8 port), everything). I'm using my s6 edge on tmobile and the signal is really low. I mean I still get good 4g lte signal but around 1 to 3 bars. Especially when I'm on the phone with somebody. Wifi calling is included. Hotspot is included. Almost everything works except binge on and visual voicemail. I can get the phone unlocked it's been paid in full.. I just need this thing to run like it's successor (note fe or note 8). it be cool to have the sprint 4g lte icons and the sprint boot up screen and make it feel more authentic with Better speeds and everything and I think that's what sprint has one up on. But I love tmobile so thats why I want this to run as a sprint phone using tmobile. Especially with extended range? I need help and input.
I'm not sure n920p is going to work well for you from a WiFi calling standpoint. Sprint WiFi calling isn't compatible with TMobile's system so the ROM will have to be tailored to work. I had a similar issue with Mint Sim with my Sprint Note 5.
