[Q] USB charging of WiFi model

I tried the cord that came with the tablet, and my other USB cables - same results with all. My Note Pro won't charge via USB at all - when I plug it in battery status says "not charging" and it keeps discharging, while idling with screen off. Only AC adapter works and battery status changes to "charging". Any ideas?
You can't charge the tablet off s usb port. Draws too much current. Some motherboards have an option to turn on a special charging function for a usb port, but if you had that you would probably know.
Your stuck with the wall charger.

Besides Not Pro I've had Sony Xperia Tablet Z for a year now - it charges from USB just fine. I never use AC charger with it...

Stock kernel on the Xperia Tab Z must have USB charging enabled. This is an exception rather than a norm I would think, with OEMs probably choosing to disable this as a safety measure (or so i've read).
Until a custom kernel is developed for the Note Pro we'll probably not see charging over USB.
The problem is still the max output from the USB port, which is 5V 0.5A , you'll notice that the charger for the this tablet is 5.3V 2A.
I'm an electrical engineer not a computer engineer, so I'm not sure how a kernel would change the max output current supplied by the PC. This has actually piqued my interest, I'm going to do some tests and see how much current the port can push. I'm betting the data lines on the plug send some information about what's being charged.
Maybe I'll build an adapter that that let's the tab pull a full 2A from the port.

Does it make a difference if it's USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port?
Normal USB 2.0 is 500mv, USB 3.0 is 900mv. Some motherboards can push this up to 2000mv, usually a red usb port

The nature of my kernel comment stems from my Nexus 4 experience with a custom kernel which has a setting to enable usb fast charge (Franco kernel with his FKU application).

This review says Note Pro 12.2 can be charged via USB - it's just slow. As I mentioned in the OP - when I plug it in via USB cable the battery status says "not charging" - could it be it's actually charging, but due to low current the device itself doesn't recognize it's being charged?
Just plug it in for a few hours and see if it increased your battery level... done.

It kinda works - with tablet completely idle and screen off it charged about 4% in 1.5 hours via USB 3.0....don't think that's helpful to anybody. Hopefully, someone finds a way to push more current through USB 3.0 port. Would be nice to eliminate the need to use AC charger.
I had mine hooked up to my laptop (Asus N76VB), it didn't charge according to the indicators (neither do my TabPro 8.4, Tab 3 and Tab 2, nor my TF700T), but the battery didn't drain either while I was using it. It stayed at 56% for 5 hours whilst browsing, which it really wouldn't do normally. USB 3.0, no additional settings enabled on the laptop, all Sync and GPS turned off on the tablet.
My TF700T literally said in the manual: "Charging from USB can only be done with the device turned off." I'm sure that applies to these tablets as well.
On the upside, my 15600mAh aSolar powerpack charges the device! :victory: (It can't charge my Tab 2 or TF700). I'm really, really pleased about that!

Battery charging

How much time will it take for the battery to charge from 0% to 100%? With and without enabling fast charge..? My nexus 5 seems to have charging problem. From past few days its taking long times to charge the battery from 0% to 100%. Its takes around 200mins to completely charge battery. I tried enabling fast charge too but still no effect.
Currently using
Mahdi ROM
Code blue kernel
Multirom
And also with fast charge enabled the USB mass storage wouldn't work. But I am able to use USB mass storage with fast charge enabled. So this means fast charge is not working but in kernel settings it shows that fast charge is enabled. I used elementalx kernel too but same result
Can anyone have solution to this.
AC: 1-2 hours
Wireless: 1.5-3 hours
USB: You're wasting your time
It also depends on not only the charger but the cable. I've had bad quality cables that only allowed 384ma through them to charge

I am using the cable that came with the box. Stock cable.

While connected to PC and fast charge enable it shows around 100 to 200mA. And when connected to charger and fast charge enabled it shows around 200 to 300mA. I tried with fast charge disabled but same results.
Why is this happening. The fast charge feature was working well before.. But now it doesn't. Anyone else having this problem? Please help

Charging from a computer via USB is ALWAYS going to be slow. Use a wall adapter (AC) or Wireless charger.
Using a wall adapter is not always faster. You want to look for a high "mah" output adapter. The one that came with my nexus was 2A (2000mah). A 300-700mah adapter will take 3-7x longer to charge. Test using different adapters and different cables.

The charger that came with my nexus is not good it only output some 400mah. So any suggestion about the charger which is good and all where I can get.
And what to do to solve this fast charge feature not working in my mobile? The kernel supports fast charge but its not workign

I haven't found this accurate since my HTC desire days, gingerbread. To me it seems like the display is throughput rather than input.

It's not highly accurate but you should be seeing more than 200 mA - 300 mA regardless

Depends what the phone is doing. If its using 600mA and charging at 800mA, you could quite easily read 200mA

True. Maybe I shoulda stated. Boot the phone up from off, let it finish boot before looking as it should technically be just idling then. I've seen charge rates of 1.2A from my in car charger which is rated @ 1.5A

Fast charge not working

Hi guys,
I am using mahdi ROM 10/01, with multirom and code blue kernel. The problem is the fast charge feature doesn't seem to work in my mobile. The kernel supports fast charge and so I enabled it and tried to charge my mobile but its not working. Still it takes lot of time to charge.
And with fast charge enabled the USB mass storage should work right. But for me the USB mass storage is working. Anyone having same problem.? Please help
It depends on the cable and source too. USB 2 is rated at 500mA.
Fastcharge if enabled, relies on disabling the data connection. That's how it recognises as AC

OTG + Charge same time?

I'm looking for a kernel or ROM that supports it. I flashed EX kernel but dosent seem to work for the 6.0.1. I plug in my otg y cable and hook up my charger cable and my led charging light comes on but the charging icon dosent show on my battery , like when its charging normal.

nothing?
I think its not a kernels problem cuz its available for me. I guess its OS setting and the issue of cable.
