[Q] Why Root the One plus one?

Hi all
i Just got my one plus one last week
it was amazing , it was snappy , the screen is gorgeous , and the CM is plain great , albeit many apps did find unresponding oddly enough
i've had many phones in the past that are not so great x10 mini , x8 , galaxy ace, galaxy nexus
all of which are miles away when compared to the one plus
and since they are so freaking lag i decided to root them and gave them root and changed their bootloader
but from one phone to the other all of them seems to die out in about 9 months after i root them , and i don;'t know what i did wrong , most of them are dead because i fried the motherboard or something
still why would you root the one plus when it's already so fast ? i am considering rooting mine but i am really scared i might kill it

First, rooting doesn't make it faster or slower. Also, it doesn't broke the phone neither now or in 12 month time.
Second, you need root for some in depth access on your phone, or some programs like Titanium Backup may require root to work.
Third, the rule of the thumb say, if you don't need it, don't do it!

greenify, adblock, titanium more than enough reasons to root.

Generally anyone who's asked me if they should root their phone, or install 3rd party firmware, my answer is no. It has to be something you want to do and something you're willing to accept the risk doing. I'm a flashaholic. I flash a new rom every few days, or update existing ROM i have. I'm never content with the status quo on my phone and devices and always play. I accept the risk of running into a situation where I go to make a call, watch a movie, or open a email and my phone locking up due to running bleeding edge untested code. Mind you I can always recover from bootloader and know how so I know I won't permanently screw a phone, just until I can flash a older rom, or recover with a PC. If you have to ask, it means you're not sure about what you're getting into. If you fall into this situation I would refrain from asking others and instead read around in the 1,000's of posts in this OnePlus forum and decide for yourself.
Not that being said, root is simple. It's a more of a "Set it and forget it" type of deal, at least until a OTA update arrives. Custom roms is where the aforementioned comes into play mostly. If you want to start getting into the Flashing world with Android its the place to start. Myself I read and read after I got my Galaxy S4, first real Android phone, and went straight to CyanogenMod with it. Skipped rooting.

He may not be aware of what can be accomplished with root access and find the profits interesting. He doesn't necessarily know if he wants to do if he doesn't know it exists/is possible.

I don't want to flame or anything, but since you've been around for almost 3 years, you should really know better.
Firstly, rooting does not fry your motherboard. Seriously, why would you think so?
The fact that your previous phones became slow after a short while is because you probably got them stuffed with bloatware and have not maintained your phone in a healthy way.
As to why you should root your phone,...
Well, most apps that help you maintain your phone and keep it as optimized as possible require root.
This kind of proves my previous point regarding the speed of your previous phones.
I would start reading some more and eventually you'll be able to answer your own question.

Well that's easy, if your not interested in using apps that need root access there's no use in rooting your device. It's nothing magic which will make your device fly or make a cup of coffee for you.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S6

I’m looking at the galaxy s6 leaks and the phone sounds amazing. Take into account that I still have a droid charge and you see how excited I am to get this phone. Before I plunk down money I have to wait for it to be released. Between now and then, I need a few answers to some questions:
1. Root access – Will it be hard to root Android 5.0? I’m asking because I have all my apps and data backed up with titanium backup and want to be able to restore them to the new phone.
2. Flash – Ever since flash was officially dropped from the android realm, people have been supplying hacked versions that work with 4.X. Will this continue? I’m asking because the site I use to watch out of market football games still uses flash.
3. Keeping unlimited data – I have the unlimited data plan with Verizon and do not want to lose it. I was told by someone to buy the phone at full retail and I’d be able to keep it. I then read online about buying the phone through Best Buy and being able to backdoor keep my UDP. Someone then told me that Verizon could at any time switch me to tiered data if I do the BB backdoor thing. I’ve heard rumors that the phone will cost nearly a grand and I’m not to keen on paying that much, if I don’t have to.
What do y'all think?

There's root for android 5 but you can never know what Samsung will actually do to the S6, what my head says that it will probably be a way to root but that will trigger Knox....

What is Knox?
If I'm not initially able to root, how do I back up my apps and data to transfer them to the new phone?

Knox is a security measure that Samsung has put into their devices, it will also show up that your device was rooted (even if you'll reflash your stock rom)
You can back up your apps with google accounts but unfortunately you will lose your app data (like levels...)
data like pictures etc.. can be saved on a sd card, pc or there's some apps that will do that without root...

So how do I get around Knox saying the phone is rooted. I'm asking because I once had to unroot my current phone to take it in for warranty replacement due to screen burn in. The joys of watching online video on an unlimited data plan
Also how do I transfer app data to my new phone without a program like titanium backup that requires root?

You can use Helium to backup your old phone. It does not require root, and you can backup all your apps and data.

No, you can root just fine.

In order to root Lollipop you must be able to unlock the bootloader. I don't think any of us know whether the S6 will have an unlockable bootloader or not. It may vary by carrier (here in the U.S.).
Assuming you can root the S6, be sure to make a nandroid backup before restore your apps and app data. The internals of 5.0 are VERY different than earlier versions, and restoring apps and data might (or might not) cause issues. In any case, be prepared to start over.
Reinstalling your apps from the Play Store is probably a safer approach.

You can root a phone without tripping knox, you just cant install a Custom recovery

That's all only related with one thing - exploits. So, it all depends on how many and how good(bad) of exploits on S6 firmware. No one could tell you now because the product doesn't exist yet. Since the security on Android become stronger, you can imagine that the time required to root the phone without tap knox will just take a longer time(Sony Z3/Z3c took them almost 4 months last time to root without void warranty) and it also depends by the sales of S6 and the community size on XDA, famous phone will get support first because of more developers.
You can use Dolphin broswer, it runs with owned ver of flash player, it built-in flash support so you don't need flash installed on system level.

[Q] I've got a few stupid questions about Z3.

I'm getting tired of the general crappyness of the Samsung S4 I'm currently using and I'm ready to buy the Sony Xperia Z3 (at the shopping mall, so unlocked, unbranded).
Before I buy, I want to know:
1. Can I achieve root access without flagging, triggering, or losing anything important like warranty or DRM keys or whatever? I'm still salty about rooting my S4 and triggering Knox without researching it first. I just want to root the stock firmwre, I don't want to install custom roms or CM.
2. Does the phone have any glaring issue like overheating, faulty batches, weird bugs, factory underclocking (again, the damn S4 had it ), cracking glass, peeling paint, etc?
3. Is the stock firmware stable or does it slow down to unbearable levels like Touchwiz does (at least in my experience and I'm not new to Android, been using since 1.6 on the SonyEricsson X10).
4. Is the camera really poor as some comparisons make it out to be? Or have they fixed it with updates?
5. Anything else I should know before buying?

Thank you. I bought it a couple hours ago and this damned thing has a dead pixel. I can't believe this. As of right now, all of my Sony phones (except the X10 Mini) have had a dead pixel when I bought them. Xperia Ray had it, Xperia Arc S had it, Xperia S had it, and now the Z3 has it. Hopefully if I complain they'll replace it.
Other than that the phone is amazing. I also got the original nfc cover with the square window and it looks very classy.

I'm sure they will replace it. Glad you like it I love mine.for the camera once you root install xposed and the superior auto camera mod to set it to 20.7 mp

Too Root Or Not Too Root?

Hi all i own a Tab s 8.4 LTE for a good year or so i did not trip Knox due to warranty and stuff.. But a month or so ago i found out about Viper4Audio so me flashing Twrp to install viper4audio tripped knox, yeah i know i could have not tripped knox.. if i installed viper4audio apk but the dam thing wouldnt work until i flashed it. Anyway once i heard viper audio wow im blown away now when ever i listen to the S8+ the audio does not sound as good as the tab s. So im wondering is it worth rooting ? the ones who have rooted do you regret rooting ? or shall i wait will root ever come for the S8+ EXYNOS With out tripping knox or am i dreaming for that ?

There will never be a way to root without tripping Knox I'm afraid.
You just have to decide if it's worth it for YOU.
You will lose warranty. You will lose things like Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, other banking apps, though sometimes this can be worked around.
I owned the S7E before owning the S8+, and it was the first time I have ever owned a phone that I didn't root it. It's a hard choice, but warranty is more important for me, along with Samsung Pay, Samsung health etc.

Just root. Life is bet with root.

I don't recommend you to root your phone you will loose Samsung pay feature for good plus your warranty. I can tell you yes it's a bit boring without having the ability to modify your phone but you can live without it. I think the stock rom is quite good and satisfies my needs . So again don't do it

No root for me. Root is history for me since two years ago.
Don't see the needs of it already. Maybe they is still one or two nice apps that need root. For the sack of that one or two apps really not worth to root and trip Knox.

I root for years any single device I have but yesterday I bought also a S8+ and I think this will be the first time not to root. So no root - vote from me

Same rooted my s7 edge just to play and get more out of it. I will leave my new s8+ Alone. Battery is great would love the customizations with root but its good enough as it is. Only thing i really miss is viperaudio. Anyone know of a way this can be installed without tripping knox??

I basically need it to: browse on internet "safe" and to use titanium backup.
I guess I can use some adblocked browser (any suggestion?), but I do not how to backup and restore the apps.. Any idea how to resolve it?

First phone since the T-Mobile G1 I haven't rooted and I've had 12 smartphones since. There's nothing as good as Adblock but I'm not rooting the S8+ and am using Blokada from XDA.

I'm joining the growing choir of new S8 Plus users who have decided to leave rooting behind them. It was fun and extremely useful for me up until this S8 Plus. My Note 5 will be the last device I root. It's just not worth the hassle any longer. Lately rooting has become too much of a chore on this platform for me, personally. I've kept Samsung as my daily driver for years because one of the reasons was that traditionally it was much easier to root compared to other devices. This was especially true when I was with Sprint as they never locked down their phones like Verizon and AT&T did.
At this moment, as far as rooting is concerned, I have the same feeling I did when I finally said, "Enough!" when I was jailbreaking my iPhones. Eventually I grew tired of the cat and mouse game between devs and the OEM. This feels the same and I think it's time to say goodbye to rooting flagships for me.
Now I feel that the combined hardware and software development on this phone has matured enough that I'm okay rolling clean and stock from now on.

I have youtube red, no ads anyway, so I'm not sure.

I have been rooting since the beginning of Android, every phone I've had. I stopped using Samsung in 2013 and went to LG, then to Google (Nexus 6P, then Pixel XL), and now back to Samsung. I was honestly a little disappointed with the Pixel and how difficult it was to flash because of the dual partitions. I am in the US, and the US S8 was a no go, as I don't appreciate a phone that I buy outright being locked down. I ended up getting the SM-G955F, and rooted it the first day I had it. It was so simple, and so worth it. I feel like its 2013 again with how easy this thing is to modify. I have Viper installed, and customized to my liking, and my ROM is bloat free.

I have a Canadian S8 Plus and I've rooted all my Androids since the first Motorola. Like others I don't think at this moment rooting would bring me anything really exciting. I've installed Adhell 2 and got rid of the ads and backed up everything with the pc smart switch. I'm missing the volume warning disable mod because I found it annoying but even that one is not that bad if I don't restart the phone. Starting with S6 the best ROMs were always stock based and that became more and more evident lately so until something really new is coming up I'm going to stay unrooted. I'm with Bell and there are only 2 apps which I would not want them so basically no bloat. My 2c.

You can get rid of ads with AdGuard.
I am hesitating to root also.
I used Titanium backup until now and if someone has an alternative I would be glad to hear it too.

Did you try Helium? The paid version has many features but it will only backup some apps vs Titanium. Because of missing root it will not be able to backup apps that have "backup disallowed" enabled.

But idf you root arent there supposed to be issue with it when it comes to the bootloader?

S5 to S7 App/Data Migration Options

I've been on a Sprint Galaxy S5 for a few years now, Stock Marshmallow only rooted. I'm making the jump to the new Xfinity Mobile service, basically Verizon.
I have a Galaxy S7 (SM-G930V) that is shipping this week.
Doing some reading, from what I'm finding, when you root the S7 you run the risk of losing some things, Google/Samsung Pay, maybe some of the Fingerprint scanner functionality, and also have read a decent number of users reporting that after rooting the device just doesn't run as good.
The S7 on the way will have Nougat.
So, this puts me at a bit of a fork in the road. The last 3-4 Android phones I've had have all been rooted, so whenever I upgraded, I used a combo of Titanium and MyBackupPro to make the transition pretty seamless. Reading about all the potential negatives to rooting the S7, I'm trying to look for options to migrate all my apps and app data without ROOT. I've already looked at and tried backing up my S5 with Helium Backup,....but unfortunately it looks like it can only do about 30-35% of my apps. I'm not really finding any better non-root backup/migration options out there.
What about Samsung Smart Switch or Kies?
Another thought is how easy is it to un-ROOT after rooting on the S7? Maybe I just root the phone, use Titanium & MyBackupPro to migrate, then un-root? Any side effects to this approach? Anything that isn't reversible once you've rooted or that doesn't go back to normal?
Apologies of any of this is a bit noobie'ish.....I've been out of the custom Android game for several years since rooting my S5 right after getting it.

Looking at the Kies & Smart Switch options a bit more. Doesn't look like Kies is really supported on the more recent Galaxy phones, and Smart Switch really won't do anything more than Helium backup is going to do for me. :/
