I just upgraded to the android marshmallow update and now when I go to sync music in windows media player it just says "windows media player encountered a problem while syncing to the device" and will not work. I changed it from usb for charging to mtp. For some reason you have to change it manually now.
Another thing I noticed is the internal storage can be viewed from the computer but the SD card shows that there is storage being used but when I go to open the sd card in windows it says it's empty
Same problem here
I may have figured it out but you potentially lose all your data on the card. I took my card out and copied everything as is on the card to a folder on my computer then put the card back in the phone and let the phone format it as portable storage not that new use as internal storage option that marshmallow uses and plugged the phone into my computer and copied the contents back to the phone. Now it seems to sync in windows media player and the SD card shows the files in windows explorer.
Will update this if the problem comes back
You will have to switch to MTP every time with MM, but if you're rooted there is an Xposed fix for it. I wonder how that problem managed to make it through 3 soaks without getting fixed. It was reported but like most soak reports, it was ignored.
I am using my SanDisk card as internal with excellent results knowing that if and when it goes, I'll have to reinstall everything that's on it. There is a r/w limit on SD cards, but my personal experience is, it varies from months to years. In other words a "crap shoot".

So I take it this is a universal problem with everyone who updates their moto g 3rd gen?

I wouldn't worry too much about the read write limit on the SD card although it is wise to back your stuff up off of it regularly. I have been using the same 32gb sandisk sd card that I got back in late 2011 and it is still fine even though for a few years when I had a cheap phone with only 4gb storage and I installed all my apps to the sd card that would transfer. So that is a lot of read write cycles. I guess it really depends on the quality of the sd card you get.
And yeah that having to switch to mtp every time is sort of annoying. I hope if we get a 6.0.1 update that gets fixed. I have also noticed my battery is draining a lot faster now and android OS and android system are the culprits. I thought we had doze now to make the battery life even better. At least that is what I was expecting even though the battery life was fine in lollipop

Actually, I think this is a universal "problem" with Marshmallow... Any by problem I mean security feature enabled by Google, so that if you plug into a random 'thing' it won't do something to compromise your device or privacy automatically. Apparently there have been cases of that have occurred, you connect your phone to <something> to charge it and it copies off all your data in the process.

don't move apps to the sdcard.
uninstall whatever apps you moved to sdcard, reboot, reinstall them and keep them in internal memory.
I didn't move any apps to my SD card. I installed them from it. They were apk files. Installed in internal memory.

Known issue. Mine will also just stop seeing the SD card randomly. I'll know it when the phone rings and the ringer is some default garbage instead of the ringer I had assigned from the SD card.
I've yet to see any actual working solution. Simply rebooting the phone will usually fix it for awhile. Will probably have to wait for a Moto update.
what class is the sdcard?
people have been having issues with class 10 cards (although i have not).
try backing up everything on the sdcard, go to settings > storage and format the sdcard using the phone. move your stuff back onto the card and see if the problem continues.

Been there done that. Mine is a class 4 Sandisk 16GB.
Make sure you don't have any apps on your SD card. When you plug in your USB cord in it unmounts the SD card. If you have any apps on the card that are running is when you run into the problems being described as the phone is trying to unmount the card but can't due to the apps running.
Card is the stock 2gb, don't know what class.
No apps running from the card. Tried rebooting the phone a few times, turning USB debugging on and off, using different connection modes... No dice.
Def keep USB debugging on. When you plug your phone in does the USB icon show up in the notification bar?
Yeah, it does. And it charges.
OK grab the USB icon and pull it down just like a notification. You should see either 3 or 4 options, charge only, windows media share, etc. Sounds like you have charge only picked. Choose the media or data one and hopefully that will get you squared away

If u pull the card you should see a number on it in a tiny circle, the number in that circle indicates what class the card is. I had this problem once, after I rooted. Did factory reset and its been all good since....this was 2 weeks ago.

I've tried all the USB connection options multiple times.
I had to uninstall moto drivers and then reinstall them on my pc. All was good after that.
Also done that multiple times.
For now I'm just using my ghetto rigged card reader - digital camera and micro sd-sd adapter. Hahahha.
Probably just going to have to wait for an update and some more moto support for this phone on the pc side. Speaking of updates, this phone's been out for a month. Getting to be about time we at least saw a few bug fixes.
I'm sure you did a battery pull. I just went through this with my device, and that fixed the issue...
Actually, I didn't.
It seems that if there are any apps installed on the sdcard, it can't be accessed via usb.
Mine actually just started doing this as well. It was working fine, and now I cannot get it to mount as a mass storage drive on several different computers. I had three apps installed on the card, all games. I uninstalled all of them and still no mass storage.
So I've been making sure no apps get installed on my sd, or even any app databases because sometimes an app will install internally, but put its database on the sd. So none of that! I enjoyed a few days of being able to use usb mass storage, then a couple days ago it became inaccessible again. I checked for apps that may have slipped something onto the sd but didn't find anything noteworthy.
I left the issue alone, praying for a fix materialize from the etherworld, when something interesting happened today. I unmounted the sd and installed a new app, and a notification came up saying the app could be moved to the sd; but the notification used a wierd sound to alert me, presumably because it couldn't find the default audio file on the unmounted sd. So I then wen't to settings/sounds...oops... android crashed and rebooted with the sd card mounted; and I have access to usb mass storage again. Prayer answered?
When I connect my phone to my PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) i get the notification for how to connect. but choose USB Mass Storage, it will not connect. sometimes if I wait a minute or so it will, an occasionally it will just work. Sometimes it will also work if I chose windows media sync and them explore on my computer, but not always. This is driving me insane since it won't do anything consistently. The problem started a while ago. Not sure If I had rooted yet at that point, but I was on a stock rom. Currently running Supercharged V5. any help would be greatly appreciated
If you have any apps stored on your SD card, it can mess it up. I had bootstrap stored on mine and was having similar problems, removing the apps should solve the prob.
No Apps on SD Card
Don't think that's the problem. I keep all apps on my phone because there is more than enough space and my SD card is full of music. it is a fairly low quality card though. Could that be the problem? I'm not exactly sure what class, but it was super cheap
I heard of class 10 SD cards having trouble, I have Samsung class 6 in mine and it is working fine.

So I just got my Z3 and a 32gb sd card, and I would really like to have my music collection on my sd card. I found out how you do it but you need a hardware menu key for that.
Do you guys have any idea how I can store my offline tracks on my sd card?

First uninstall Spotify from your phone
Then before you reinstall it make your your 32GB card has more free space in it than the internal card. Spotify will automatically create it's offline storage folder on the SD Card with the most space at the time of installation.
That's it. Nothing more complicated than that and it will create this folder on the SD Card even on Kit Kat Android.
Even with a hardware menu key it still wouldn't be possible.
This phone hates SD cards altogether unfortunately. No option to transfer apps to sd card, no way to transfer things using 3rd party apps, and most annoyingly of all, you can't even transfer content to it over USB either, as either the file explorer crashes or Sony's own media go app crashes.
Simply put, the phone does not have permission to access the SD card for anything other than the built in apps, i.e. file explorer.
I had to use one of those sandisk usb to micro usb flash drives just to get my music on there. 2MB/s read/write speeds are NOT fun when it involves 20GB of data.

This is just plain incorrect information. See my post above.
I have Spotify, PocketCasts and tTorrent Pro all accessing and writing to my external SD Card on my unrooted Xperia Z3. Once the app being installed creates a folder on the SD Card then it can write to that folder.
Thank you G1032, it worked, I think.

Could be different for each region then I guess.
As for the stock unbranded UK one I have, it just doesn't allow it at all. Same was true for the previous 2 defective Z3s I've had. The whole thing is botched for me.

The first one had a very poor screen, the bottom half was very bright compared to the top, as if the panel was bent showing more backlight through at the bottom. It also had a broken wifi/bluetooth chip. Wifi signal was unobtainable on my AC router in a location where all my other devices had full reception. Bluetooth dropped out when I put it in my pocket or covered the back of the phone with my hand. On top of all that, the battery drain was ridiculous. On 20% brightness I was struggling to get through the day even with many features and sync disabled.
The replacement had a faulty camera button, so I didnt even bother to go any further with it. The screen was far better in colour and contrast though compared to the first, which was strange. No horrible backlight bleed at the bottom though.
The one I'm using now is almost perfect aside from the top speaker crackling/buzzing. There is small backlight bleed at the bottom, but it isn't bad enough to make the screen uneven like the first.
If the speaker becomes more of an issue, I think I'm just gonna return and stick it out with the Moto G till the Note 4 drops in price (should be about 400 quid by christmas).
Your camera issue sounds software related though. Similar to the SD issue I have probably.

If it does it every photo then you certainly should get one. Sounds very annoying! Think I've seen a couple of people on here report similar issues.
Don't think I've seen a phone launch with so many different issues at once.
Hi guys, I have a situation with my moto g, I have the 8gb version since one week, I've installed a 128gb sdcard on the phone formated as internal storage... During a few days I've no problem with performance at all.... Then yesterday I decided to encrypt my phone and today I loaded 60gb an data, music, photos and videos.
Since then my phone is struggling from time to time to do simple tasks like opening an app or dragging the status bar down... Is nothing like that happens always or with the same apps.... Is random, sometimes I just wanna to unlock the phone and it takes like minutes for the keyboard to come up.
Anyone with an idea of what this might be? Was it the encryption? Should I give the phone time to index all the data?
I know it's not a problem from the SD card, because it's the fastest sandisk that I could get.
Since you asked in the form of a question, I will give you the best answer I can based on your specific questions...
This is probably a multitude of issues... first, setting up your SD card as internal storage will typically show down performance, although sometimes not noticably. Second, you encrypted internal storage (your SD card) this slows down your system as well. Third, you loaded 60GB of data, music, photos, and videos, which will take a VERY long time to index and put into the Storage and Media databases, and there databases also reside on the internal storage, which access to has been slowed down significantly due to being on an SD card and encrypted. These 3 things combined will likely give extremely poor performance, for a time at least.
My first question would be how long has it been since you loaded that 60GB of data? On an idle device it would take several hours (maybe days) to index it all and update the databases...
Thanks, I might have precipitated myself in thinking that something was wrong, yet today the phone locked it self a few times, one time the process system stopped responding... I will wait until tomorrow if the problem persists I will try deleting the biggest folder ( music 40gb) and if I see some improvement I will add the music in steps.
I'm pretty sure it was the encryption. My phone, with a similar setup (1GB/8GB phone, 64GB SD as internal storage, reasonable amount of media) also showed a gigantic speed loss when I foolishly enabled encryption. I tried to work with it for some days until it became clear the situation wouldn't get any better. After a factory reset, formatting the SD again as internal and copying the media again, the phone feels even faster than it was out of the box.
I've also my phone encrypted for quite a few months now (did this already on lollipop), with actually no real complaints. However since a few days I've noticed huge performance hits as well. I'm also considering a factory reset...
Thanks for all inputs , I have restored the phone without encryption and everything runs smoothly again.
Hi, It's my first post here on XDA-Devs.
Here's how my story goes. I bought an ASUS ZenPad C 7.0 few days ago (Less than a week maybe). It was working great. I didn't install many apps (only 2-3 till now). It was working great until yesterday. I bought a SD card (32 GB) which is full of study content. All the content was already in it when I got it.
My device supports upto 64 GB expandable memory. But when I insert it into the tablet, the tablet lags, lags terribly ! It lags so bad that I have to forcefully shut it down. I can't remove the battery so have to hold the power button for 30+ seconds to do this.
My thought for the reason :
1) The ZenUI keeps crashing, even without the SD card.
2) The android on this device is not well coded. It's bugged. Alarms keeps on vibrating the device until I force stop the clock application.
I think I should root my device and install cyanogenmod because it's far better than what i received in the package. It might fix the alarm and UI crash issue and the most important SD Card issue.
That's all. Help me please.

I've certainly read of issues with the ZenUI before, so if a root is available and you're comfortable doing it then it may be worthwhile.
But what do you mean that all of the content was on the SD card when you go it? You purchased/received it loaded with content? Have you loaded the SD card into any other devices or a PC? Do other devices lag in a similar manner?
Also, have you tried loading any other SD cards into it? If you have any empty one, or maybe one with just a few photos and/or songs, that could be a useful test.

The SD Card was loaded when it was purchased. And I've tried other SD card (4 GB) and it didn't lag. I Can't try this 32 GB SD on other device as it's won't work on a device with different IMEI number.
Maybe the SD card is the problem ?

Well the Asus ZenPad you got is only listed with 1 GB of RAM and a fairly modest resolution, so if there are graphics automatically loading when the SD card is put in then it may be creating the lag on the device.
But you say that the SD card will only work with that device? That seems strange to me. What happens when you try putting it in a PC? Or do you only have the ZenPad to work with?
Do you know what brand the SD cards you have are (both the 32 GB that doesn't work and the 4 GB that has no issues)? And is the 4 GB card completely empty? Have you ever seen any notifications with the 32 GB cards that it is unmounting from the device on its own?
