What have I done wrong - extrem performance slowdown - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I have a situation with my moto g, I have the 8gb version since one week, I've installed a 128gb sdcard on the phone formated as internal storage... During a few days I've no problem with performance at all.... Then yesterday I decided to encrypt my phone and today I loaded 60gb an data, music, photos and videos.
Since then my phone is struggling from time to time to do simple tasks like opening an app or dragging the status bar down... Is nothing like that happens always or with the same apps.... Is random, sometimes I just wanna to unlock the phone and it takes like minutes for the keyboard to come up.
Anyone with an idea of what this might be? Was it the encryption? Should I give the phone time to index all the data?
I know it's not a problem from the SD card, because it's the fastest sandisk that I could get.

Since you asked in the form of a question, I will give you the best answer I can based on your specific questions...
This is probably a multitude of issues... first, setting up your SD card as internal storage will typically show down performance, although sometimes not noticably. Second, you encrypted internal storage (your SD card) this slows down your system as well. Third, you loaded 60GB of data, music, photos, and videos, which will take a VERY long time to index and put into the Storage and Media databases, and there databases also reside on the internal storage, which access to has been slowed down significantly due to being on an SD card and encrypted. These 3 things combined will likely give extremely poor performance, for a time at least.
My first question would be how long has it been since you loaded that 60GB of data? On an idle device it would take several hours (maybe days) to index it all and update the databases...

Thanks, I might have precipitated myself in thinking that something was wrong, yet today the phone locked it self a few times, one time the process system stopped responding... I will wait until tomorrow if the problem persists I will try deleting the biggest folder ( music 40gb) and if I see some improvement I will add the music in steps.

I'm pretty sure it was the encryption. My phone, with a similar setup (1GB/8GB phone, 64GB SD as internal storage, reasonable amount of media) also showed a gigantic speed loss when I foolishly enabled encryption. I tried to work with it for some days until it became clear the situation wouldn't get any better. After a factory reset, formatting the SD again as internal and copying the media again, the phone feels even faster than it was out of the box.

I've also my phone encrypted for quite a few months now (did this already on lollipop), with actually no real complaints. However since a few days I've noticed huge performance hits as well. I'm also considering a factory reset...

Thanks for all inputs , I have restored the phone without encryption and everything runs smoothly again.

Data lost from Storage Card

I have a very wierd problem with my storage card.
The last I recall. I was deleting a picture from the HTC album.
The next thing was all data in the storage card is missing.
The folders were all missing except for the DCIM folder.
On checking the disc space. It seems the files were all still there.
I even unhide all files however still not visible.
Anyone any idea wat to do?
Could it be the storage card is damage? Anyway to retrieve my files?
As far as I know, there is some programs, which restore files on on storage card. I had data lost about 3 months ago. To the best of my memory, I used Pocket Mechanic. Also you may try connect your device as USB-flash and try to restore data using programs for recover files from flash drives.
Good luck =)

Thanks you.
hi,
i have my cruise for 1 year now, and i also had encountered storage card data loss 2 times this month. with 2 different SDHC cards, 4Go and 8Go.
never happened before, i can't understand why now. (ROM M-AMINE).
a friend of mine who's got his cruise with genuine rom from htc had the same probleme last month.
when this happens, the only folder remaining in the card is "inbox.000xx" that's all. the thing is some hidden data still using space when you check on a laptop.
i could recover most of the pictures with a dedicated software.
i can't trust this phone anymore, so i will change soon.
cheers.
data loss and phone crashes due to SPB software
I've had similar problems with folders disappearing randomly and file corruption on the SD card. I'm guessing that the file system on the SD card gets corrupted due to the crashes.
I've nailed down the issue to Spb Wireless Monitor, since uninstalling this software my phone is a lot more stable and no data loss from the sdhc memory card. May want to give this a try.
This question has been asked a few dozen times, and the answer keeps coming back to the HTC encryption and how bad it is. TURN IT OFF it can not be trusted and it is on by default. Its not even worth explaining why it is so bad and the causes behind it.. just disabled it and forgetaboutit!
Hi,newbie question guys, how do i turn off the htc encription?
Start->settings->encryption
Obviously, my phone had never this encryption on...
If you have explaination other than the dozen you're talking about, i'm really interrested.
ciao
Thx silverpal
I'm having the same problem. Just turned off and will see. I hope that's it. Already bought new microSD...., nevermind.
I turn off encription and the problem continued, actually figured out that can't be turned off...

Raphael kills SD-Cards??

Hello everyone,
i own a Raphael since January and in this time it allready killed 2 SD-Cards.
The first one about 4 months ago.
Suddenly in the middle of usage the Raphael froze and i could not get it started again. even after a hardreset it was stuck in the bootscreen.
after a lot of trying and finally removing the sd card it bootet again without a problem.
the card was not readable anymore in any of my devices or windows boxes.
i thougth myself. well can happen even when a card is only half a year old got a new 8GB card and forgot about the incident.
yesterday while listening to some podcast suddenly the sound died. taking out the phone i found out it did not reacted to any power button presses or anything the screen stayed black.
after a softreset the phone worked again but took about 5 minutes to get in a usable state and the programms installed on the sd card where not aviable anymore.
taking a closer look i found that the card was not displayed in file explorer anymore.
gave it a try with my mp3 player. same result no card was found.
today in the morning i gave it a try on the pc with an sd-adabter. but also no result, wondows does not even recocnizes any device being plugged in. tryed a few data recover tools but non of them found the card.
someone has similiar experiances or any tips how i could get my data back from the card?
i guess the phone has to be send back for maintainance, but i doubt that they will find anything, if they accept it at all.
I have changed 4 sd cards because of similar problems. But the problem is most likely because of the fragility of high capacity microSDs, I wouldn't blame Raphael. Try other manufacturers (and try to find the ones that are not just rebranded)
I've had many issues with sd card corruption, but have solved some of the issues. Here's my advice (fwiw):
1. Get a card scanner, and regularly scan your catd. I do it everyday (takes 5 min). I use Wizcode Scandisk. It fixes errors and dumps out files that can be opened in notepad. It's worth looking at them, as it helped me find the multiple sources of corruption that I had.
2. Don't put your PIE cache on the card.
3. Change all 'save' paths (esp. the camera) to main memory.
4. Store any programs you use a lot on main memory.
5. Do NOT have any programs that run constantly on the sd card.
6. Do NOT put Fingerkeyboard on the sd card (major problem for me).
Basically, my advice is to use sd cards for storage. The Raphael has a lot of memory-use it for programs. I haven't had to format my card in about 4 months. I was doing it every couple of weeks for a while.
well basically i was using my sd card as a storage place for movies and podcast + podcastplayer prog.
and was using the player more or less the whole day.
i used the same card (and the other one before) also in my mp3 player when the raphael or the bt headset run out of power and there is no power outlet aviable to recharge. and twice the card failed in the rapahel.
when i got a new card, i also found that the card is working 100% on pc and mp3 player, but the raphael still can not see any sd card.
i really blame the phone and also assume that it now has a defective reader.
have to give it back to repairs as soon i have flashed the original firmware and make my way back to the store
You should scan the disk to find out the error sources. It may be something simple that causing them. Also, if your phone freezes when listening to music, you may want to either wait it out, or remove the card before soft resetting. You should do some searches on card corruption. There are lots of threads here that can be helpful.
many Sdcard and usbStick manufacturers got lowlevel format tools you can download and get cards not otherwise working in cardreaders on pc back to life
would love to get those cards working again. but i also would love to get the data back that was on them.
but the problem is the cards do not even appear on the pc, or any other device i have that can read/write them (usb card reader, digi cam, mp3 player)
its just as if nothing is ever inserted in the reader.
the low level format tools don't rely on windows driver model to detect cards
Flash Format (cnetx) has always been able to re-format my card, even when my pc couldn't recognize it and neither could my fuze. It has a free trial that works fine.
I haven't experienced any of these issues myself. But I'm sure I will now that I said that....
i gave that flash format a try, but it even failed to install. was one of those weird .exe installers. on the pc side it told me install was sucessfull, but on the ppc side was just a promt "installation failed".
a cab install would be nice, but without a working cardreader in the phone i guess would also not be of much help. i guess cuz of that that prog will not help me much. the reader in the phone is broken. cant read any cards, even brand new unused ones that are fine everywhere else just dont show up on the phone.
as for other "low level format tools" my search was quite unsecessful. i was looking at the sandisk and the transcend page (the suppliers of my 3 cards) but could not find anything.
google just found more request for this kind of program but not really somewhere where i could get it.

Check C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\CNETX-you'll find the cab in there. There will be several-you want the PPC-Arm one. It should install fine.
Card Freeze
Yeah I had the same thing happen. Raphael would not boot unless I removed the card and as soon as I placed the card back into the sd slot it would lock up. Unlike you I was able to get on of my PCs (either the XP Pro or the Vista Pro) to recognize it but all I could do was format it.
OK I like the idea of moving all the data to the main however I'm an old Windows CE guy (yeah I had a Jornado) and the memory used to be shared between program and storage. The device would allocate from the other when more was needed. If I place all the stuff I want into the Raphael main memory won't that lower the amount of RAM I have for running programs or vice versa? I really don't know if the memory is fluid since all I get when I look into the memory is one listing total storage and one total program, there is no slider bar like there used to be in windows ce.

The storage memory on the device is flash, not ram, so you don't lose program memory changing the save paths to main memory (if that's what you meant by moving data to main memory).
I never had any issues with my storage cards (sd and cf) on my 2003 device. I don't think it was the device, but rather the cards. The big, 16 gb cards just seem to be less hardy than a 1-2 gb card. I had all my apps on the storage card (including stuff like magic button), and never had a problem. But, jeez, the 16 g microsd is sensitive as hell. It gets minor bits of corruption at least once a week. I scan it everyday to avoid it crashing, which has helped, because I've gone 4 months without formatting it. One thing that I've found screws it up royally is doing a lot of file/directory operations over active sync on a pc. I don't know why, but cutting and pasting files from one folder to another in the sd card frequently results in lost clusters. Renaming folders is also a bad idea.
OK Flash
Well I guess I didn't explain it correctly. According to HTC the RAM is 288MB with a ROM of 512MB. So I'm really confused since according to the start>settings>system>memory the total for my storage and my program = 549MB which is of course more than 288 and 512. So when I load applications into my device and get a choice of main or storage card when it was a large file (some apps I use were 14 megs or more) I would choose the storage card.
My old experience with Windows CE was whatever memory was on the device was shared with both the program and storage, so I would put as much as possible on my storage card. However in windows 6.1 or higher it lists two separate columns for Program and Storage with: Total, In Use, and Free. So when I install apps I presumed they went into the storage area. Am I mistaken? I figured Program on the device meant how much is currently in use. Kinda like opening multiple windows on a PC. I notice it's low when at once I have 4 applications open on my windows mobile device so that's what I thought Program memory was.
Therefore does installing to the Main, when given a choice during program installation. where does it get installed ROM, RAM? Why is my total memory higher than RAM or the ROM
Any insight would help me decide the best location for my program installation to not corrupt the data, or have the flash card screw me up either.
288 MB is the total amount of system ram. A large amount is not user-accessible, it's used by the kernel/OS/Page-pool, so you don't see it reported. It's still there, though. The rom memory is 512 MB, but the actual memory in rom is subtracted by the storage memory so you see the amount of user-available memory. With 2003 devices, if the battery ran down, you lost all of your data, because the storage memory was in RAM (except perhaps for a little flash disk space). But with a fuze, you can pull the battery out, and not lose your data.
Totally confused
OK your right about the 2003 devices which is why I placed most of my stuff on a storage card. However why is my total reported memory 549MB more than the 512 ROM? Also when I install stuff to the device where does it get stored, the 512 ROM? Are you saying that the 200mb of Program being shown is 288 RAM minus the 88 being used to run the OS?
So are you saying its safe to install all my apps onto the device and I won't lose anything if the battery runs out?
Yeah, I've been saying that for about 3 weeks, lol! They got rid of the volatile storage memory with winmo 5; we're onto 6.5 now, and it's a thing of the distant past. I you don't believe me, pull out your battery (there's no backup battery on the device) and see if it causes a hard reset.
This is not an uncommon problem with digital cameras, as well. It's complicated, but the bottom line is this: whenever you buy an SD/micro SDHC/etc. card, you should do a full format of it on your COMPUTER, then put it in your device.

[Q] Apps on SDcard go missing? usually??

Is anyone running into a problem with apps that have been moved to sdcard just disappearing? Most of the time I see little green droid icons all over my launcher (ADW), and lots of missing apps in the app drawer. I can reboot several times and eventually all show up.
I'm running ee4_debloated-v421 / 0730_charge_voodoo kernel / sdcard_patch. Am on my second handset (first one had a clicky button go dead). The earlier handset occasionally did the same thing.
I presume the sdcard is the culprit, as it is the common element. But I have popped it out, run fdisk and defrag all with no errors.
Any theories??
I had this happen when I first got my charge. How I fixed it was I took the SDCard out of my phone and put it into my flash media reader, and then did a full format using HP's Format tool with default device settings. It took a long time to do the full format, but after doing so, I didn't have any more issues with apps disappearing that were installed to the SDCard.
Full format, huh... (gulp) well it's certainly worth a try! I'll report back.
Thanks,
Larry

I know when the phone first came out, there were several users with SDCard problems. I'm not sure how others fixed them, but a full format and a half hour or so fixed mine
Well, I'm disappointed to report that the problem did not disappear :-( Could it be the contents? I copied *everything* from the card before full formatting with the HP tool (which tooks hours as you said), then copied it all back. Same result... if I reboot enough times it will come up with all apps showing.
I've ordered a Class 10 card. Plan to use the HP tool on it straight away. What else would you recommend? Maybe move all the apps back to the phone? Would you start from a fresh load of the ROM?
Many thanks,
Larry

I know that DroidXcon over in the Android Central forums advises NOT to move apps over to the SDcard because of problems like you have experienced...the higher (class) speed card may help. I've noticed that on my stock class 2 card when I view a subdirectory that contains large wallpaper files using QuickPic or Gallery, the thumbnails will often "time out" and not display towards the end of the list unless I refresh the listing several times. I would assume it is for the same reason that recording video to the class 2 card will time out after a few minutes.
Good luck with the Class 10 card...keep us posted!!!
Well, the Class 10 arrived in time to try again, so formatted with HP Utility and copied all the saved files over. Same behavior.
If it's the sheer quantity of apps on the SD card and there is a timeout involved, that might explain it! Reformatting the card would effectively defrag it which would speed it up, perhaps explaining imnuts' observation. And if reading in all those apps at startup is not I/O bound but maybe CPU bound, that would explain my experience.
I'm going to try moving apps back to the phone just to see.
Wow, this is persistent. Moved all the apps from SD back to phone using TiB, which seemed to hang sometimes. Tried different access methods with no clear winner. Anyway, after a reboot, the situation was unchanged. Unreal.
So I am starting from scratch with a freshly-formatted Class10 card, a full data/cache wipe, and a new ROM: GummyChargedFE1.9.1. Haven't had a problem yet, but haven't restored anything to SD either. Proceeding cautiously.
Ok, I'm converted. GummyChargedFE1.9.1 solved this problem. Everything seems to run better. Added the V6 SuperCharger thing which tweaks minfree levels and much more, and the combination runs extremely well.
Biggest problem for me is that I'm satisfied... spent the last two years trying to get my "original" Droid to run well, then got the Charge, started over. What do I do for an encore?
Fast Boot option may be the culprit
In case anyone is following this old thread ...
I did not need to install a new ROM
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report back here on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873670
(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (although this thread appears to be the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)

[Q] Transfered apps

Hi guys.
I'm having an issue on my XL.
This happens every time I transfer an app to internal(via settings->apps) or on SD(titanium backup, clean master).
After a reboot, it doesn't immediately show up in the app drawer. Eventually, after 6-10 seconds it does shows up at the end of the drawer.
Its very annoying...
Any help or suggestions REALLY appreciated
Notes: 4.2.2, BL Unlocked, rooted, tried re-flashing all stock FWs and pre-alpha CM but nothing worked :crying:
Also sorry if I missed something, its late and I'm starting to hear some wierd conversations in my head...

This is quite normal. You have sent a file/app to SD card and it is not immediately available when system loads. After system loads, it starts to read SD card and then you see your apps.
Even If you use a faster sdcard like class 10, you might see improvement but there will be always a delay.
Further, the more apps you have on your phone, the more time it will take to read your SD card.
How often you restart your phone ? I hardly restart it in months.

Well I restart it quite often lately...
I'm aware that forcing transfer to SD is risky, but as I said, this doesn't happen only if I transfer an app to SD, but also to internal memory. And that didn't happen before.
For an example, I flash a generic ftf, turn on the phone, reboot and transfer Office Suite to interal memory.
Also, I use a class 10 Kingston 32 gb.

I am sorry to disappoint you but it has always been there for me when I had many apps/more than 50% full internal or SD memory in all phones I used EXCEPT Nexus devices. (It only has one memory. Not two or three )
The phone reads internal memory and SD card the same way, you can think of both as two SD cards. One which is removable and other not.
Try clearing dalvik cache. It might help but chances are slim.
Here what you do , restart your phone and do something else for a bit like a glass of water, or check what's in fridge to eat

Hahaha thanks for your adivce
Yeah, tried cleaning dalvik cache... surprise, surprise, it didn't work.
But hey, it's nothing fatal. All of my apps fit in phone memory.
Still, thanks for clearing it up for me.

SM-G950F DevBase sudden data loss in internal memory

This is just going to be sort of a blog post of what happened to me recently. Not asking questions, or anything of that kind, just if someone else faces this problem then we can see we're not alone.
OK So I was using DevBase (sorry, forgot the version and installed lineage, it was one of the android 8.x.x versions from around a couple of months after official 9.x.x was released, because I hated the new UI.), rooted, Magisk installed (basically for AdAway only, because I didn't know of Blokada before) and Xposed installed (wasn't using it for anything, just experimented with it a couple of months ago and didn't bother removing it yet).
I've always had my storage space close to full, both internal and external memory cards. It's ususally full of pictures and videos saved from reddit, 4chan, tumblr, my meme and porn collections. I could just copy them to my pc, but having to use that ****ty MTP protocol which copies everything slow A.F. and unreliable as hell as well... I very rarely make a backup of my phone. I was just planning to do a major backup (basically just moving my stuff to my pc) of the past year or so of using this phone.
I think it's also worth mentioning that my phone has always been in a sh.tty condition. I bought it with a fully cracked screen, with a mostly non working lcd, and it was network locked before someone unlocked it. I replaced the screen and the back glass with some cheap chinese generic stuff (I know...), which I also managed to misalign the adhesive on, so it wasn't water- or dust resistant anymore and has been to 2 heavy rains since then (where it detected water in the usb port, didn't let me charge it, and had to plug it in while booting in order for it to let me charge it). My sd- and sim card slot has also been having issues since I've got the phone basically, it never did go fully in, even though it was working fine. The case I was using (a spigen case, which later turned out to be a counterfeit, and the seller was also removed from ebay along with the listing, but looks very good) held it in place so I just thought I'm going to see what's going on with it when buying a new battery and new usb port when it fails, and when I have to replace the back glass anyways which is also cracked by this time (xd). So yeah, these might play a role in all what happened.
Couple of days ago I started getting weird messages in the camera app that I couldn't record video to internal storage (64gb). Even though in ES File Explorer it showed a couple of gigs free, these numbers have never been too accurate. I deleted some old, unused apks (I don't use google play or services, I install everything from apks) and large unnecessary videos from both the internal and external storage (wasn't sure which one the camera was using). Still got the same message in the camera app, and in ES File explorer there were some weird happenings, like the deleted files didn't reall disappear, and when I tried to delete them again it said it couldn't find the file. I was too tired for this bs so I just set the camera's saving location to the external sd (128gb), and called it a day temporarily.
A couple of days later I deleted some of the apps in order to free some space up on the phone. I also put my apps into folders, my app selector has never been so tidy. Everyone in our house has been having problems with wifi in the past couple of weeks so I didn't really worry when some issues with wi-fi came up. There was an exclamation mark besides the wifi symbol and it was using 4g. As if it was connected to a wifi network, but had no internet access. This has been the case in the past a few times. This tim though, when I turned of mobile data, wifi just worked fine with the exclamation mark. When I turned it back on, it was using 4g again. Turning wifi on and off didn't seem to help, so I disabled and removed AFWall+, which I thought could be causing problems here. This didn't help either, so...
I decided to restart the phone. It restarted, and after booting, all I had was a black screen with a notification bar. I was waiting, but nothing seemed to happen. The screen didn't even want to turn off for a while. Then I got my lockscreen, where I don't use any codes or anything. At this point I don't remember in which menu I am, probably just the black screen still, with the phone app crashing constantly, and some other apps occasionally. OK, I thought, I'll just restart this and it'll work fine, even though this many crashes at the same time never happened to me before with this phone. It restarted, first thing I noticed that the apps weren't in folders, rather they were just in alphabetical order. Then I noticed some notifications about setting up certain samsung apps etc. When I started some apps, I noticed, none of them had data. My (not synced, of course, because muh botnet) Firefox bookmarks, history, let alone the open tabs. My music playlists in AIMP, the phone numbers, logins to discord, messenger. Everything was lost. In ES File Explorer the internal memory, which was almost full, had 40gbs free... oops...
Fortunately, my external sd, where my recent photos, videos, and 100gb music library is, is intact. Thank god. I just made a backup of that to my pc, formatted the sd, and now through adb in twrp recovery I'm trying to create an image of the internal 64gb memory to the external 128gb, so I can mount the image on my pc and maybe revive some of my memes and such. This is needed because you can't mount your phone easily to the pc in order for it to show up like a mass storage device. You can't use recuva and others on MTP devices....
I now have a 64gb image of my data partition. , or whatever that was mounted to. I will look into restoring the files later.
Moral of the story: nothing. Maybe that I should've been better off using stable roms, use lineage instead of trying to remove/disable google stuff from some touchwiz roms, make backups regularly.
