Active display and always on listening - HTC One A9

Does the A9 support natively always on google now and active display with the amoled screen? If not, does anyone have recommended apps?

Unfortunately, it does not natively support either - they can both be enabled with apps and maybe some round about hacks. OK Google requires the phone to at least be on the lock screen to work in the stock state.

Hmm... So I understand the OK Google thing, but I wonder why no active display when you can add a dot case? That is effectively the same thing, no?

[Q] Any way to keep brightness down in camera?

Right, I've got a black One S with android 4.0.3 and sense 4, all like new (as it is). I don't fancy rooting it and don't really want to change from the HTC Rom, but the backlight in the camera annoys me. On the touch pro2 with the HTC stuff, I'm certain there was an option in settings to keep the screen backlight down when in the camera. On the Trophy that followed, I couldn't control it, because, let's face it, you can't control much in WP7. however, switching to the one S and android, I expected being able to keep the backlight down.
Why is this frustrating me? I don't like.being blinded by the viewfinder, and I don't want to kill the battery any more than I have to. So, is there a way to keep the phone's backlight down while in the HTC camera app?
Okay, now I know everyone has ignored this thread but I think I've discovered a way. So here's the setup:
HTC One S
System brightness set to lowest
A 4 digit screen-lock password
So I have the passcode set on the 15 minute max timeout, so, the phone locked itself, and I dragged the camera icon on the lockscreen into the ring. Naturally, despite being locked, it still allows use of the camera. Now, it may just be my eyes, but I'm certain I noticed a distance difference in brightness. That is, the screen seemed a lot dimmer when the camera app was being accessed from behind the lock rather than unlocked.
I think the brightness is ok lol

AMOLED displays as the one in One S doesnt have backlights. But there is a mod that lowers the values when using auto brightness since the defaults are a bit high, not especially made for in-camera though. Check for it in Tweak Machine thread in apps and themes forums.

I guess most people aren't that fussed about the brightness, but the battery did seem to last a lot longer when recording 1080p video with the lower brightness.

Does that require root access? From what I can see it does, and I guess that too would be helpful for the majority, but my phone isn't rooted. Mainly because I like the HTC Sense camera interface so much
Yeah you must flash it from custom recovery so at least unlocked boot loader required. Why not try a sense based ROM? They all keep the awesome HTC camera and its snappiness
Unfortunately with the One S update I finally received last night bringing it up from Android 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1, HTC have now removed the incredibly helpful 'bug' of the brightness staying down in the camera if it is launched from the lockscreen with a password set. Thanks a lot HTC, you excell yourselves with stupidity once again.

Bump. Recording lectures is impossible due to HTC's stupidity. The 100% screen brightness not only kills the battery before lecture ends, but it's extremely distracting for people behind me (especially if room is dark during powerpoint presentations).
This has to be turned down. Ideally, once set up, the phone should be able to record video with the screen OFF. Or at least with brightness on min. Surely there's a mod or a hack for this?

hi,
Firstly, I'm glad that I'm not alone in this. As you said, it is extremely frustrating as not only is the bright screen distracting for others and makes you look foolish, the battery hardly lasts any time at all. I contacted HTC to see if they could add a brightness slider, their customer support rep said the technical team would get in touch with me - they haven't.
However, on the positive side, I have found two apps which don't allow you to record with lower brightness, they up the ante to your other suggestion, having the screen off. I'd always assumed that cameras on phones couldn't work with the screen off because I thought the phone went into proper sleep. Turns out that the camera can stay active. There are many poor apps on Play, but I found two which offer free (very limited functionality, but allows you to check that the app works with your phone) versions and rather expensive pro versions. I tried both the free versions and liked the second one I tried so much that I bought it.
The first one I found was (I don't know why they assume people are using their cameras solely for nefarious purposes - some of us do have legitimate reasons and battery life concerns) 'Hidden Camera Spy Camera', Play link (Lite version link is in their description). This one worked ok, but took a while to configure and doesn't have the nicest interface. So I continued hunting and came across an even better app:
Secret Video Recorder Pro (Lite version listed at the side in the More by this Developer panel): This app is even more elegant. I tried the lite version and found that it worked well, so I then decided to buy the full version (apparently it's currently 50% off, but still pretty expensive - well worth it though). After going through the settings, I set it to use the rear camera and force HD recording. I then tapped the icon on the homescreen, it notified me and then just ran in the notification area. I then turned the screen off, whirled the phone around my room, turned the phone back on and tapped on the notification to stop it. I then checked the video and to my amazement, it had worked! (on an unrooted, still carrier locked, black One S running the latest official updated OS (Android 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1))
When I dragged the app into the fixed Sense homescreen dock, originally it displayed nothing, even after rebooting the phone. However, after Sense crashed and showed me a message saying Sense had crashed, it even worked from the lockscreen. If you have the 'Show icon' enabled in the SVR Preferences, you can then tell from the lockscreen that it is actually recording as you can see the icon in the notification bar.
I'm sorry for rambling on and on, but I think SVR just got into my top 5 apps of all time list as it is unbelievably flawless (apart from the price )

Doesn't using SVR defeat your original purpose? It's not using the Sense camera, it's using it's own implementation? At that rate, any aftermarket camera should work and allow you to use default screen brightness.

Unfortunately, yes, it does. SVR is sort of a compromise for me at the moment as I can save battery life but I do miss out on all the Sense camera features. It would be great if HTC do actually listen to my request and implement it, given how simple a request it is, but they appear to be constantly so far ahead with all their development process that I doubt they'd include it in the the Android 4.1 release scheduled for this month
SVR is on one end of the scale of what I'd like to do with the camera (save the battery) and the Sense camera is on the other end (use the camera). Where I'd like HTC to place us is in the middle of those two, with the ability to use the Sense camera but in a power-efficient manner (such as being able to record a video but take stills at the same time, with the battery outlasting the meager storage space).

i think your battery is empty before that happens
Found this on ars technica site:
Actually it's physically impossible for an LCD to get screen burn - that refers to the phosphorous coating on old CRTs where the electron beam actually burnt away the coating... (which is technically reversible, however I doubt it would be economically feasible and requires specialist equipment)
LCDs suffer from a something similar - which is called image persistence, a static image causes a parasitic capacitance to build up which prevents the liquid crystal molecules from returning to their normal relaxed state. The good news is that it's reversible and can be performed by an end user.
It can usually be recovered by displaying a full white screen and depending on the severity of the persistent image it can be recovered in as little as an hour...
Also due to the nature of IPS panels they tend to suffer the image persistence problems sooner than other LCD panels. Modern laptops shouldn't suffer from image ghosting (not at a hardware level anyway) - on older panels is was caused by slow refresh rates and panel response times (The old cursor submarining on Apple PowerBook 140s spring to mind). Extremes in temperatures can cause ghosting or panel lethargy in older panels - most modern panels have impressive temperature ranges...

Is there any app that can assign long press actions to Tue capacitive keys? I need long press menu/recents button launch last app. Sadly miui doesn't have this. I know cm rom has it but need it on miui rom.

To answer original question, yes, dual sim works well. You assign which sim to use for outgoing calls or to ask you every time which sim to use. same with sms. For data you assign one sim.
The one sim that is primary can use 3g, lte, while the secondary uses 2g (from what i have observed).
Hello, are there any Mi4c users using CDMA/Evdo Rev. A networks? I'm using CDMA networks but the data connection not working at all neither through CDMA or Evdo Rev. A or even LTE, but the sms & voice working normal. Has anyone facing the same problem? Maybe has solution to it?
Thanks.
Anyone else have issues with the alarm not ringing in the morning, after the phone haven't been used for 6-8 hours during the night? I'm currently using Sleep as Android as my alarm app and I've set the alarm to ring every morning, but it never does. I assume this is because of MiUI's memory optimization, which causes it to shutdown the app during the night and therefore the alarm won't ring when I've set it to.
I've tried looking for an option to customize/turn off the memory optimization for certain apps, but I can't seem to find any option for this. Anyone experienced the same issues and have any solution to it, because the alarm is kinda necessary for me ^^
Well the default alarm works fine for me and I'm on build 5.11.5

Hm, alright.. maybe I should try to use the default alarm and see if it works. You don't have any ideas of why Sleep as Android isn't working? I have tried to set the alarm during the day when I'm constantly using the phone and then the alarm is working perfectly, so it seems like the phone is doing something during the night that turns off the app.
Thanks for your answers.
Is there any way of preventing the miui CD mounting when connecting to PC with USB?

Missing tweaks

Hello Everyone,
I'm fresh owner (bouth a week ago) of Honor 9 and I'm very happy with the choise I've made. The phone is incredible fast (comparing from my previous Galaxy S6) and EMUI is well optimised. But, ehm let's complain a bit . I'm courious what kind of feature you're missing on your Honor 9 phone/EMUI. For me the complaining list would look like:
- Missing ability to control notification light - different freq. and color for different apps
- Gesture for home button - there would be nice if "scroll up/down" would trigger to enroll notification arean
- Dim clock as screensaver while charging (very usefull as I'm charging my phone while sleeping, and so could be use as night clock)
- Knock Knock feature on locked phone - to see notification when phone is on the table (I know there is notification LED for it)
Ok that's my complaining list. If you have any idea to overcome such a limitation feel free to suggest. Also don't hesitate to complain a bit as well

I don't think there is a way to over come your complaints without rooting your device. Even rooting your device won't allow you to use the features you want on the home button.

Hi iceepyon,
yes I believe you're right, there the missing feature about home button won't be most probably overcome without ROOTing the device and use custome KERNEL. To by honest with you I'd rather to not use the feature as some application I'm using won't run on ROOTed phones (based on official statements).
Hovewer I believe some of missing feature could be added by some app?Any recommendation?

- most phones nowadays don't have notification light. Probably because the phone spend most of its time in our hands
- I agree with this one. The fingerprint scanner supports swiping gesture
- honor 9 uses ips lcd screen, even if its dimmed, the whole screen still light up. This will heavily drain the battery
- you can use wave on proximity sensor app to turn the screen on

Well, there is honestly nothing much which can be done if you want to add the knock on wake feature. Same can be said of the notification LED as those are built into the device's official stock OS. The only thing you can do is install a 3rd party OS and hope that it has some of the features you want. However be warned that most if not all 3rd party OSes do not have the best post image processing software so your pictures won't turn out as good as if you have taken them using the stock OS that came with your device.
@iceepyon, yes I can imagine that most 3rd party OS won't have such a camera software optimalization. Btw, I've read some post about how to enable 3rd party clock as screensaver. I can't understand why Honor/Huawei disabled this feature, which is present in stcok android.

That is certainly true of rooting or installing custom OSes onto your mobile device. As there are so many things which can go wrong. However current versions of android are now at a point where unless you need to have your device rooted for work purposes. There really isn't a point for the average user to do so.

with android pie there isn't the 3 dots in bluetooth & device connection
Hi Jacarta,
Your description for screen mirroring is not quite correct,
In Android Pie the correct description is:-
Settings
Connected devices (Bluetooth, NFC)
Connection preferences (Bluetooth, NFC)
Wireless display
then choose the device you wish to cast to.
Setting
Bluetooth & Device Connection
Connection Preference
Cast
Click the 3 dots (enable screen mirroring)

You can cast from your device by using the smart view option.
The three dots are not available! It does not exist.

Thank-you for jogging my memory of where the screen mirroring is.
It is possible that people may be asking how to mirror the screen to a smart TV and not to a Chromecast. My Samsung A3 can use the Sony TV's mirroring feature so there the Chromecast is not involved, but now it seems I can't do that, but it seems that I can now only mirror the phone's screen through Google Home.
So.... With Android Pie, how does someone mirror their phone's screen directly to the Smart TV's native and built-in mirroring option? (For the people who do NOT own a Chromecast.)

[Dev] What Apps would you like to run on the Cover Screen?

I obviously can do some magic.
That's why here to collect ideas which the actual users may would like to see, I won't be super keen on AOD implementation as that would eat up battery, but sure, could be an option. I have my own list of to-dos for the first version of the Super App, just want to see what users come up with.
something can toggle wifi Bluetooth sound flashlight.....
I used aod on all my samsungs. and even on large screens it didn't add much to the battery drain. But how many forums I read, most users are at a loss why the small Samsung display, which is logical for aod, was not used in this model.
about adding functional - enabling bixby routines would be logical without opening the phone.

Well, if Samsung natively implements sure, not much batter drain, but as a third-party developer there are limited access to the APIs (at least not without root.) But yeah, I will see what I can do about it. Bixiby routines, interesting.

Hi Guys! If you could, what Apps would you like to run on your cover screen, given that it's really small or what type of information you wish you could access from the cover screen?
I am a developer, so maybe, just maybe I will be your genie to your wishlist of cover screen apps.
Go ahead, be as creative as you could be! I look forward to hear ideas other than using the Cover Screen as a Notification LED please.

I have a couple days with the flip and for my confort don't spend to much effort to open and for the sake of won't scratch more often when I put on every surface close position, I semi-close pacman like position and put like a stand so the metal frame only touch the surface not the glass and that way when I have to open only use one hand to fully open.
But in that position all the notifications appear on the main screen, so no way to see what notification have, it's there a way to show the notifications on the second mini screen in open position?
I agree, just a simple AOD digital clock would be sweet
