There is no choice under 5 inches and only 5 inches you can find with good specs are with huge bezels...
I came from a Samsung S4 and i had to buy Honor 7 but i'm not really happy the device is amazing but 5.2 and the size make one hand operation really hard...
And right now Honor 7 is one of the smallest flagship smartphones of 2015.
If you look under 140x70 specs are really really bad or don't have microsd slot as xiaomi mi4...
I heard new xiaomi mi5 will be at least 5.2 inches do you know why of this trend?
Over 5 inches even with really small bezels are not smartphones anymore but phablets.Wondering why i can't belive i'm the onlyone unhappy of this trend...
5.2 is big is not normal ore even compact for a smartphones unless you have huge hands one han operation is possible but really uncomfortable...
I don't mind if new smartphones are thin as a credit card if i can't hold well in my hand is really stupid...
Also the jump from 1280x720 to full hd is stupid...1600x900 would be more than resonable for 4.7 to 5 inches cause with just HD you still see pixels but you don't need full hd.
Or you can find 5.2 with >500 ppi or 4.7 with less than 300 ppi so stupid again...
What do you think about?

Sony Z5 Compact is a good choice for a phone under 5". It sucks that phones getting bigger and bigger,
yup the Sony Z compact series is considered the best when it comes to phones under 5"
You would be better off asking the manufacturers these questions rather than a hacking forum that has nothing to do with determining screen sizes
Everybody wants a bigger phone these days. The people who want something below 5 inches are in the minority overall. I don't understand it really, because big phones almost are forcing you to use both hands at times, which goes against mobility and ease of use actually.
Honestly, the mobiles under 5 inchs either come with low features or premium (like apple). Why don't you purchase atleast 5 inch smartphone? There are many choices for 5 inches.
Under 5"? Only devices with any decent specs in that range are the Sony Z Compact's, Do not be fooled into buying anything from Samsung that has the word 'Mini' 'Neo' or 'Lite' in it, they're rubbish.
The reason big screens are more popular is really very simple. The days when a Smartphone was primarily a phone are long gone. People buy a portable media device, not a phone. And as such the rare few that don't wan to watch films and series on their phones have to content with lower specs.
Mind you, the manufacturers have a very good point. Why would one need high specs when you won't actually use them? For multimedia use and gaming, high specs make sense. But those both cause the user to want a bigger screen.
At any rate, high-end specs rarely fit inside the small container of a <5" device.

Isn't it ironic, then, that I can operate my 5.7" Note 3 with one hand quite comfortably, and I'm a woman with size 5 hands....
The trick? Flexible fingers.
Would you buy a 5 inch >75% screen ratio?
With a great battery >3000 mah sacrificing a bit of thickness for a much better ergonomic one hand use?
I'm very disappointed all new compact device start from 5.1 or 5.2 with unconfortable big and squared bezels...
Remember S4 and G2 they had really great proportions pretty easy to use with one hand...
Can't understand why manufacturers still pushing phablet and just phablet >5.5 every day and compact are 5.2 wich is definitly not compact...
Do you think is very important to have flat thin as much as you can but large as tennis racket?
We have no choice all flagships 2015 are freaking huge for one hand use really uncomfortable!!!

Is not everybody want bigger is you don't have choice...
I understand >5.5 inches cause before you buy you already know your are going to buy a phablet big screen but two hands mode...
But what is the reason of 5.1 or 5.2 with huge bezels if you can do one just 5 inches with few bezels easy for one hand use?
You really think there is a big difference between 5.0 and 5.2?
For 0.2 inches and a bit of less thickness you would sacryfing one hand mode?
135x68x10 mm(in the biggest point with round ergonomic back) and >3000 mah this would be a great real smartphone not a freaking phablet

She's coming from an S3 (I also had an S3 before jumping to the LG G3 last year)and all she does is complain about how slow it is and how terrible the battery life has gotten. I've heard a few people say touchwiz has gotten better on the S6 and isn't such a resource/battery hog but I don't think I'm willing to trust Samsung again. I'll have to look into the Honor 7, hadn't seen it before.

I'd personally rather have a phone with a little extra bezel instead of a super thin phone. I have an S4 and although it's a great phone, it's super thin. More bezel = more strength to the screen and less chance it cracks when dropping. I have never heard of "Honor 7" before. I'll have to look that up. Sounds like an Asian model.
I do agree that all the flagships are 5+ inches. The phones that are around 4.3" are using specs of 2012. Now...the LG Transpyre has a quad core CPU but has crappy internal storage (4GB). No idea if there is an 8GB or 16GB model. It's sold for prepaid service.

I think these are probably two of the best phones being released this year. The ZL just hit the FCC for att and the Z is over seas basically the same phone just one got notification LED and the US ZL isnt fully water proof like the OG Z.
Anyway i want to compare the phones both design wise and spec wise which you think is better or would prefer.
To me i like both appearance wise, the only thing i dis like about the sony is non removable (smaller batter) than the s4. 2370mah vs 2600...
The other thing is which one packs the most speed under the hood... Im not to familiar with the Chipset, Qualcomm MDM9215M / APQ8064
CPU Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait, GPU Adreno 320 thats in the sony. And depending on which variant of s4 you get then there is snapdragon and exynos..
So thoughts anyone... I dont want this to be a bash this or that thread just honest comparison of the two as i think the xperia z is one of if not the closet contender to the s4 for 1080p smart phones

I have a Z and the screen is phenomenal, much better than the One X and GS3, it just doesn't look too good on videos...
Overall, I love my XZ, the waterproof is really cool and I like to show that feature off.
I prefer Sony due to their developer-friendliness and higher build quality.
I also love their UI, Samsung's just doesn't do it for me, and their phones don't look too nice to me either.
That is not to say that Samsung make bad phones, the specs are usually ahead (on paper), and I'm sure there are people who like the phone design/UI choices that Samsung make...

With such a high pixel density, you can't really say that a 1080p phone screen looks that different to a 720p one... (I own both an XT and an XZ, and they look almost identical)
There isn't exactly a plethora of 1080p phones to compare it to at the moment anyway.
I have found that I prefer Sony's TFT displays, they are less saturated, although the viewing angles are worse (which is fine, I hold my phone in-front of me, not sideways )
But whatever, I'm not gonna say whether one is 'the best', these are just my opinions...

Don't even try to compare LCD Vs (S)AMOLED. It's not the same technology at all. (S)AMOLED is great for people loving over saturated colors (including me), whilst LCD is for people that are more into life like colors. But....
The Xperia Z is having some serious problems with its display. Consistency is the word here and the Z doesn't seem to use the same display across devices. Some devices uses Sharp displays whilst some devices uses JDC. (S)AMOLED devices has excellent viewing angles, SLCD2/3 panels are also excellent, but the Z's TFT is quite disappointing. It's a really great device - and dev friendly, but the screen is toataly ruining it for me.
The S4? Really boring. It's packed with new features, but it's soooo boring. We've seen it before.

Personally i like the s4 since its got the latest tech but to me they did good tech wise but are getting lazy in the appearance and software side of the phone game..
Sure you could probably say a galaxy looks the way it does because that makes it a galaxy but I feel the s4 should of had a bold new design and either less of a tw skin or a completely overhauled tw like no one has ever seen before. Yeah. I love the Z's display.
It's slightly behind the GS4 in terms of CPU (1.5 GHz quad Krait instead of 1.9) - but that really only matters on benchmark epeen. The raw hardware performance advantage will be thrown away by Samsung's bloat and atrocious software incompetence. Samsung Touchwizz is revolting and bloated, constantly assaulting you to sign up for a Samsung account until you give in or nuke the bloat. Sony's stock firmware, on the other hand, is so clean and well done that the ONLY thing I've done to my device after rooting so far has been to freeze the charge reminder in TiBu.
I'll be switching to CM10.1 soon, but that's more because I'm a CM maintainer and that is what I do, not because of deficiencies in the Sony stock firmware. If I had to run 100% unmodified stock on a device, the Z is the first non-Nexus device I've felt that I might be able to tolerate such an experience.

That's because the XZ can't compete. It has a subpar 1080p screen with washed out colors and really bad viewing angles, the speakers position is ridiculous and the speaker itself isn't that loud and clear, It LAGS like hell when you use the Sony launcher especially when you add more widgets and battery life isn't great. Plus it has some overheating issues. I think Sony will do better next year and this device is something to build up on, but it cannot compete with either the S IV or the One.

I've owned the Xperia Z since launch...
The display is very good, going from an S3, I have no regrets. Colours are good. Viewing angles are good too, slight change on colours ay extreme angles. My GS3 used to get a multi coloured sheen at extreme angles. Speaker is fine, location can be awkward but I rarely accidently cover it up with my hands.
In no way is the XZ laggy, I've not experienced this, infact its the most fluid handset I've owned.
Battery is good, needed cycling, lasts alot longer than my GS3 ever did. Also my GS2 and GS3 overheated more than my XZ.

Personally I would say the Note 3, I am getting mine this weekend. If you really use your phone for videos and gaming and just overall alot of screen time and like big phones/screens, then get the Note 3. If you don't use your phone for other then maybe a few games or apps here and there and don't like big phones/screens get the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is a good phone, but all in all it isn't really a multimedia phone in my opinion. Though so might say otherwise.
The Nexus phones are really meant for developers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Dev_Phone
it should come down to cost and potentially hand size.
The note 3 is slightly better, but significantly more expensive.
If cost is a factor or if you have girl hands, go N5. If cost isn't a factor and/or you have man hands, go note 3.

As a woman, I object to that.
Anything over 4" is too big to hold as a woman, so what does it matter if it is 5 or 5.7"? (Put that thing back in your pants lads, your phallus does not have a screen, let alone the ability to multitask.)
I wouldn't go back to a smaller phone if they paid me for it. No way.

I've been contemplating this too. Price is a factor. I also like the clean look vs the mess of status bar icons. Although it looks like I can address that through themes etc. The biggest things for me is the bigger screen and battery. I may go back to a Nexus device sometime, but for now I decided on the Note 3

Agreed. Those were my factors plus the multi window capability.
I have a Note 3 even though I was going to get a Nexus to receive the updates sooner. When they released the Nexus 5 I feared I would regret buying the Note, but no. But keep in mind I wanted a big phone to replace a tablet too, so if you want something smaller and don't nees the spen, Nexus is an excellent choice for the price.

Sure it's cheaper and that's why it lacks the 40% of the things that N3 has.
I repeat you cannot compare 2 devices that are in 2 different categories with the biggest different imo the pen. Only phones with pen can be compared. Academically speaking nexus is great device for its price really but honestly if you go for N3 and used to the pen abilities there is no going back. I haven't touched with fingers except some zoom in/out since day 1.

Congratulations on your first post I was in the same situation, whether to wait for Nexus 5 (still own Nexus 4) or buy this beast. And as you said it, I never regreted it, absolutely beatifull peace of hardware. And surprisingly, love the amoled and its deep blacks. I am back on Samsung after years of HTC/Google phones. Still need to get used to S-Pen, barely ever using it, but the phone is excellent even without it.
Got a Nexus 5, loved it but had issues with my 3UK home signal box so got a Note 3. Personally I prefer the Nexus 5 as its much easier to handle. Nexus I can use with one hand but when I do the same with the Note 3 I feel like i'm going to drop it. Both are amazing phones but to me 5" is the sweet spot for the mobile phone screen size.

* You buy the Note 3 for the expandable memory and the removable battery! In which case you can add on a 2nd oem battery or use a plethora of external higher capacity batteries that are available
* what about the triple mic's on the note 3? The adaptive sound dsp?
* How easy to not mention about multi-window use on the note 3, the killer slow motion with 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 speed adjustments, the browse while you stream video window ability with the stock video player, the adjustable AMOLED color profiles, bluetooth 4.0LE, advanced modes, the wifi-direct modes
* what about the screen writing which works amazingly well? The s-Pen command mode with scrapbook, screen write, and the pressure sensitive screen???!!
* Don't forget the sensors on the note 3: Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, temperature, humidity, gesture
* how good the camera really is and no camera focus lag like on a nexus 5
* even if you guys don't like touchwiz, a simple launcher can fix that. But the bulk of the phone is made even better by samsung, really.
* and best of all it works on Verizon's network. Supports simultaneous LTE data and CDMA voice.
The pros on the nexus 5:
* price <---
* OIS in camera but what's the point when the extremely laggy focusing is in play
* IPS screen with ultra pixel density; at least no worries like SAMOLED screen burn
Those are about the 3 pro's going for the nexus in my book. I don't want stock android for it does NOTHING! Samsung threw in all the whiz bang features and if you don't like the features turn them off. At least you have that feature to turn off vs. a stock android which has nothing! I find it interesting the so called hard core android user choose nexus because they choose to have stock everything on the phone no extras. But what is the point of owning a smartphone in which you don't have any fancy features? Why not just get a regular dumb phone and call it a day.
And the article states you rarely change batteries - what a joke - because when my battery gets near 30% which is about 1day to 1.5days/2days time, I just swap it out in less than 40 seconds with a fresh one waiting in the charger. I use a 64GB Samsung mSD card now to hold all the 4K videos and 60fps 1080p videos and also the mic on the note 3 is extremely good! You can even zoom in the mic!
You shouldn't even compare the note 3 to the nexus 5 because the note 3 really is a fantastic phablet. The nexus 5 is a good phone for the price but again, if you want stock android that does nothing, go for it!

Great "REVIEW". I agree whit that.

If you have the money for the note 3, it is a no brainer.
But nexus devices are still amazing.

Sent via my right hand, which somehow wasn't busy at the time...
Had both - started with the Note 3,sold it for the nexus 5, sold the nexus 5...and there I am, back with a black Note 3
The nexus is a BEAUTY! I love the design, the handling, the screen...I love the speed, the back of the device, the simplicity.
BUT:
I just can't go with a SP on which i can't rely on in terms of battery life. Not a great step forward from the nexus 4 - i am more a heavy user. And folks : if i have to turn off Google now just to be able to get through the day, there is seriously sth wrong. I want to be "power independent" and that is simply impossible with the nexus. And still the camera is kind of bad.
No, the Note wins in all terms. (at least for me)

I can't seem to find any thread about the new Nexus X... if there is any please guide me to it, if not lets start it here... so far the specs are know from the new SoC 805 SP and 3GB RAM 32GB storage with QHD display, some rumors about a 5.9" screen and 5.2". What do you think? I myself will skip it if a 6 inch display it will be too big.

Same here, I got now the nexus 5. But 6 inch will be too big for me
Im waiting to see the nexus 6 how will it be in terms of size which is what really matters now as we put it in our pockets ??
I think that 4.5\7 are the max size for a good usability. I don't like this trend of "bigger is better", and when i think to resolution like WQHD on a smartphone, don't know if laughing or crying...

Sorry, my mystake ^^ i mean QHD
It's annoying that there's no specific release date... can't wait for this device
I've nearly saved up enough for this phone. I want something big...really big, so this phone is everything I want. I think it is anyway, I guess I'll find out soon enough. I definitely understand the qualms people are having about the size though. It'd be great if they also do come out with the vaguely rumored 5.2" Nexus, or maybe do some sort of "refresh" of the Nexus 5 (newer SOC, or at least bump the storage options to 32/64GB).

can't agree more with this man, i'm currently using XZU as my daily driver (well, say i'm crazy) but that's the fact, and...
any other phone feels so small, but i think it'll be relieving if there's 2 type of Nex6, i would get the 6" one
I'm using Zen6. Well I have to agree bigger is better. it's a matter of opinion and I could say it may increase in size or shrink to wearables by today trends if this continues in near future.
I think it will having on 1080p display
Im hoping for QHD 5.2". Still to many rumors about N6 is the moto shamu but i guess the moto shamu will be just a device by motorola not nexus device by Motorola.
I hate waiting like this why dont they just say an announcement date
Any news?
Don't worry about the size overly much. I know 5.5-6" sounds and seems massive, but take it from a Note 3 user; after a week the phone will look and feel normal in size, and everything else will feel tiny.

Why are so many ppl complaining about the size? The overall dimensions are the same if not smaller than the note 4, the screen is just slightly bigger. I'm really hoping this phone lives up to the hype I want a note 4 but not sure how long I can deal with tw
It's getting really, really hard difficult to not make penis jokes in this thread.
5.5-5.6 really isn't that big, especially after a few weeks of owning it.
I left my note 2 for s4 bcuz of size
So yeah planning to buy a new phone and I can't make a decision.
Depends if you want a 5.9 or 5.2 inch screen and if you want a Metal or Glass back. Because beside that, the specs are almost the same

Honor 8 ask the way !! The beta program for Android N makes the phone so good
John
Sent from my Honor 8 using XDA Labs
I recently came from a note 4, and I have to say it is really nice using a smaller device.
I have them both, and only using Honor 8 cause the size fits the pants
Sendt fra min FRD-L19 med Tapatalk
I sold my Mate 8 for the Honor, m8 is a great phone but too big for me, despite its great bezel.
If you want a big screen (for gaming, movie, surf..etc) and a great battery, go for the Mate. If you are looking for the same thing but you want to keep your pockets lights, go for the honor, the battery is not as great but it's ok.
As mentioned above, ask yourself if you prefer metal or glass.
The rest is quite the same :
Screen quality, camera, emui interface, velocity...
honor 8 is just the exact size for small hands, morover mate8 is a huge device with excellent battery life
The Honor's 5.7" screen is more than big enough and it looks so much better. Unless the 16MP camera is important to you I think it's a no brainer.

what about kirin 960 amd the latest gpu from arm
Was it simply you wanted the smaller form factor ?
Picked the note 10+ the bigger the better
Yeh it was exactly that for me, just wanted a smaller version just wish the battery was as good as my S10+, but obviously that won't be the case.
For me, it was the size. Yeah I know the plus model isn't that much bigger but still... After using a bunch of huge phones for the past few years, I wanted something smaller. Also I was ok with the 1080p display (which still looks amazing btw) and didn't mind the 8gb of ram so yeah.

Had it not been for the price you would have gone for Note 10+ ?
Size for me.
Nothing more besides the build of the device. I love the boxed shape chocolate bar desiggn of the devices ever since my Sony Xperia z3. I was waiting for Samsung to implement a similar design and this seemed to be it.
Now if they remove the curved edges since it's outdated in my opinion, I feel this design is perfect. I felt the Xperia xz3 had the perfect build and design for a smartphone. If they were to modernize that build with extremely minimal bezels like the note 10 plus that would be my ideal smartphone design.

Would i leave my hamburger for steak dinner if the price is the same? Hell yes.
The size of the phone is 100% important to me. I can't carry phone around, it really irritates me to have to somehow fit it in the front pocket, then when I sit, I have to remove it, baby it all the time as a nanny. I remember having Sony Xperia Compact...few years ago, was good, but it didn't support wifi calling, VoLTE with my T-Mobile sim, although other phones did. So even 5 inch phone is great. I just want to forget that I have it, as one pocket has keys, the other my wallet. I like Note device and picked Note10. The sad part is that my phone is 60% in my car/home and 40% with me.
I've been waiting for such a phone for so many years. big screen, slim body, and I really need s pen in every day use.
If only the camera was under the screen, it would have been perfect. But the punch hole is not that bad anyway.
FHD display is enough for me, and I've never used more than that in my note 9 and note 8, so I actually prefer it to QHD.
Not having a micro sd when you get 256 Gb is not a problem either. For me even 128 gb is enough.
Battery is a lot better than I expected. I get about 1 hour screen on time more than note 9.
It's almost the perfect phone.
