my nexus gets an update every month.

But not all phones

If you paid enough for the phone you'll get important updates, if you have a really cheap phone the manufacturer probably doesn't care
Sent from my LGMS631 using Tapatalk

exactly!
you get what you paid for.

So no security for cheap phones

No not really, depends on a lot of things but for the most part no

you have the security of where it was when you bought it. so you have security.
you are expecting to pay a cheap price for a phone, then have it get all the latest updates and security, thats never going to happen.
it takes a lot of money to make and send updates, when the phone company sells cheap and dont make much money, there is no spare money to spend on these updates. there not going to sell it to you cheap, then loose money making updates for it. they would be out of business in no time.

Either that or they just rebranded and renamed themselves Motodouchea.

I doubt it, considering how hard they made it for the XDA guys to root the DroidX. My guess is we're going to be seeing more of these hardware "anti-root" chips on future Motorola devices.
Pretty stupid of them, really, considering the huge percentage of the Android population (like myself) that regularly try out different ROM's and such. You would think they would be more concerned with making the hardware sale than making sure you were stuck with MotoBlur.
It just goes to show that Motorola really isn't listening to it's customers, and that's a shame. The Xoom looks pretty awesome, but if it's as locked down as I expect it to be you can count me out. One of my favorite things about my G-Tablet is how easy it's been to "tinker" with it. And I can attest that the things are almost impossible to "brick". Thought I killed mine a couple of times, but it just took a little time hacking away at it and it's always come back to life
Away put your weapons...
The comment that's going viral through the Android community was just a poorly-thought-out blurt from a guy at Motorola. Before we break out the sandblasters and flamethrowers, remember that "the guy" has a boss... who probably issued their almost-an-apology soon after...

do not buy motorola
look how they are making fun of the defy owners
i bought one and it had the dead speaker problem, then when i could think of anything worse than a phone that cant make calls, a beautiful green stuck unremovable pixel apeared on the screen, i sold it
Is this even newsworthy?? Motorola is nothing if not famous for locking down their phones, especially those running on Verizon's network. I can recall bricking an old Moto flip phone, simply trying to add some custom ringtones to it. Personally these days I avoid Moto altogether, I just assume anything they create will end up locked down and crippled. There are gonna be so many other honeycomb tablets that I am uninterested in anything that will be locked down like an iPad is. (And yes I have an iPad, which spends most of it's time being used for Netflix and Angry Birds.)

I'm reading that the minimum is $800, but I doubt that's correct. They wouldn't be crazy enough, would they? Are there that many people forecasted to be willing to shell out an extra $400 for basically the same guts as the VS + 3G/4G and a better screen? I suppose people buy the iPad and that doesn't have 1/2 the features so anything's possible.
Not in a rush to buy a locked down boot loader. No custom roms or recoveries....no thank you.
Sent from my VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1 using Tapatalk
If the bootloader does not seal it as a bad buy, the reported $800 retail price should (Neo, due to the rationale below- the price may be correct)
I expected it to be high, due to the phone price model. That is why phones are so high, due to carrier pricing practiced by all channels. They NEED you to buy the data plans and get locked in as a revenue stream- hence crazy a55 retail prices.
You would think Motorola and Verizon would learn from the Galaxy Tab debacle. It STILL does not sell well and is cheaper than the Xoom's reported price.
Samsung talked smack about over a million sold, but that was sell IN to retailers and not sell THROUGH to actual end users.
just crazy..

I saw the same post from engagdet, and still no word from verizon or Moto. One thing that I can be 100% sure is that I won't buy it.. it is crazy to pay $800 dollars for it.. and I can get the gtab for less than $400. Yes, the screen sucks + missing some sensors..

Android phonoe not a good investment?

There is always a new model every month so your new Android depreciate very fast, ifyour lucky 2months only it will depreciate?
Manufacturer should just release 1 model every year!
Right?
Comparing to the iphone, yea.
It's good for the buyer and bad for the reseller.
That will never happen. Manufacturers care nothing about your phone's value after you purchase it. To compete with the Iphone they have to produce many different phones to cater to everyone's needs. I personally like new and better phones coming out all the time. Who wants the same phone for a year?
I plan to use my phone for several years. I did use my previous one for about 5 years (it was a Nokia N80) and only replaced it because of a hardware defect. Why does it matter that new phones are out? Your current one doesn't become a worse phone because of it, it's still the same phone that you bought because you determined that it suits your needs.
...if you care more about resale value of your phone, then sure.
Most people here care more about new technologies in hardware and software I would think.
iphone will not have NFC, bigger screens, LTE, etc.. for nearly another year. Its outdated before it was even released. And it holds it value only because of its restricted platform.

Exactly. To alot of us, it is all about the new technology. And to keep with the topic of the OP, the sooner you decide to upgrade, the more resale value your phone has.

Try selling a used SGS2 when anyone can get a new one for $500.
Then try selling a used 16gb iPhone 4 when a new 8gb iPhone 4 (not 4s) costs $550.
I think as long as you enjoy it, it is a good investment.

No phone is an investment. By definition, an investment appreciates in value, no phone appreciates only depreciates invalue; some quicker than others. Unless you've got serial # 1 of the Google Nexus or something.

That's the problem with cannibalization, you have different manufacturers all fighting for a larger slice of the pie. If theY stop releasing new handsets while other companies continue to pump out new models, revenues drop, profits drop, share price tanks, bye bye manufacturer.

That's not appreciation in value. Appreciation in value happens over time (if it happens). That is purely because there are people willing to pay a lot of money rather than wait for their carrier or local shop to get it.
Seriously, why are you going all over a heavily Android based community and bigging up the iPhone everywhere? This community is for discussion and development that serves to make everyone's Android experience better. You're just posting things like this...
Android phonoe not a good investment?
Is it wise to buy new Android device if there is a coming new model every month?
Why iPhone 4s sells to almost 2 million over the weekend?
Reason why iPhone 4s kills Android
Please stop trolling our forums. If you don't like Android then stop posting in Android forums. If you do want your Android phone (if you have one) to be better then stick at reading the forums. If you'd prefer an iPhone then please just get one!

Who cares if it depreciates, it's a phone, not a share. Just buy what you like and have fun with it. This unless you really plan on reselling it: in that case buy an iPhone: next summer you'll be able to sell it for 450€ or so and upgrade to a new phone almost "for free"...

no phone is ever an investment
a phone is a phone, you don't gain money on it, you lose money on it the moment you pay for it, just like cars
the older the phone/car the less valuable it is
so it doesn't really matter which OS it is running.
if you like a specific model, buy it, if not, wait for the next better model

Depends in what way you mean investment. Investment when you already have a phone, or an investment when you don't have a phone but need one to earn any money? Of course it's an investment when you need a phone.

They don't update,l in order to get a update you have to buy one of the many new phones they are making. And with that motto they stand to make way more money. Why pay a software developer to sit around and design **** that gives them no returns cause its free. Updates to fix bugs and security flaws are one thing, but an upgrade to a new OS is something more. So charge for it. Did you get Windows 7 for free when you bought your Windows Vista computer? Do you expect Windows 8 for free too?
I for one would gladly pay $20-$30 bugs for ICS on my Skyrocket. Mind you, I'd expect it to be timely and stable.

Windows = closed source and money lovers. Sad but true and always will be
If you want to compare how cell phone upgrades are free and windows ones aren't well I have two thing to point out
1. Computer operating systems don't move as fast as mobile which means they gotta charge plus they just stopped supporting XP or something like that. Plus windows is overpriced.
2. Linux is free = open source

As long as they know people will get new phones why bother quickly updating old ones, if they do at all. All the platforms have fans that will buy a new device because it's new, but Android is the most hyperactive with the shortest time frames people spend with the devices IMO.

Hate to say it but this phone will not get a big following anywhere outside of china for many reasons. Some being that these types of china knock offs tend not to have the hardware that is advertised, no real warranty outside of china, and normally don't run official android builds, nor have access to the market due to Google and china issues.
Might not be bad if they could get their act together but I don't see iit happening

Well china does have copyright laws. It's either just not enforced at all or it favors companies in the country.
Also as a reply to your previous post, this company is supported by Qualcomm directly (or at least so I read on Engadget). And since it is running MIUI, it also has full access to the Play Store and will get updates since it just updates whenever MIUI gets updated. Warranty probably won't work but I tend to try to not damage my products and keep them safe. If there are manufacturing issues, well that's my fault for not researching the product more before I bought it.

Just because it has MIUI (which is not something I would brag about lol) doesn't mean it will have the market. If it looks good to you then by all means give it a shot. Good luck just don't expect it to find a home here.

*sigh, you definitely haven't used MIUI, or any product by Xiaomi. They are TRUSTED. Go ask those who uses the Mi-One, they are the most satisfied bunch of all smartphone Enthusiasts. Why? They don't get updates not every six months, but every Friday! And trust me, they DID NOT make up the hardware specs. Its either that you're racists towards Chinese companies, or just a unlucky customer who bought a fake product.

First off I am not racist to anything at all. I give everyone a fair shake. As for MIUI your right I have never used it and never will. I don't support what they did.
As for the hardware specs I am not aging they made them up. Just stating what many have seen with buying knock off devices. If this device hardware is legit cool and I am sure people will be happy with it.

Xiaomi MI-2 - kind of future for Android Smartphones- ...
All the hardware of the Xiaomi MI-2 is surprising, especially for the 1999 Yuan chinese price...
For sure, the lack of a memory card slot is annoying, but it is the choice of Google too, inside all the Nexus models.
Now if people could write an authentic JB ROM in order to replace the miui "iOS like" ROM, and if the international price could be really low, I would be inclined to replace my Nexus

Xiaomi 2 is nice between my and my girl we have the last two previous models....her service provider in china will give the phone free when she signs a new contract and I will be trading her a JM phone for it.

[Q] Anyone else angry about the M9 already on it's way?

I, for one, am pissed. I just got into another 2 year deal to get this phone and they are talking about it's replacement already. They should have made it known, so people could decide themselves if they want to wait.
I'm not sure where you've been but in today's smartphone market, flagship devices are lucky to last 4-6 months before they are dated. The 2 year plan is not feasible for keeping the latest smartphone.

Transparency is all I'm asking. If the phone is coming out in 2-3 months, then they already are past the planning stage and may already be in the manufacturing stage. Either way, I think it would be decent of them to layout the long term. Don't know where you are but in America these phones are expensive and tied to expensive carriers, So I would like to know all my options if the ,manufacturer already knows they're putting them out.
If that's true I'm not really mad. The way I see it is that with such a short time between releases the M9 will be only a slight improvement at most.

Where are you seeing information about the M9?
I don't think they need to disclose anything... There will always be a newer phone around the corner.
You know that without them announcing anything... And if you are on a 2 year contract, what is the difference if a new one comes out 6 months later, or a year later. Changes nothing.
And if you are going to play the waiting game for the next 'big thing' you'll always be waiting, as there is always a next big thing coming...
The only thing I have read about an "M9" is that they are cancelling the M8 Prime to focus on the M9 which will be released in Q1 2015......... right on schedule.
So enjoy your M8......... I know i am.
If you wait for the M9 you might as well wait for the M10. You'll only have the latest and greatest for a month or two with all the flagship phones available.
I believe I'm in the Verizon forum and if so they have the Next program. If u got it when this phone came out they had a special which basically every month what Next costs you is credited back to you so you have the Next program free! New phone can come out tomorrow for all I care and I can trade my phone in for it with $0 out of pocket. A beautiful thing for the OCD people that want the latest and greatest . Those not interested there is the standard 2yr contract plan for phones. Easy two choices so choose wisely . Don't blame the cellphone company for your choices on how u will upgrade. They have to keep up with the times to stay in business, the user doesn't have to, it's a choice.

Buy a phone on contract, root it (if possible) keep it in mint condition. If one day it becomes un rootable sell it as mint rooted and dance in the profit. Buy new phone off contract. Rinse. Repeat.

True but unless u find a real dummy ur never gonna get back what u paid. Still going to pay at least $100 out of pocket after selling 8-14 month old device. How much does an HTC One X+ go for today compare to when it came out? Example
I'd rather pay $0 out of pocket and upgrade when I want to and still pay only $160/month for two lines with 10gb of shared data. Just need to turn s on, unroot, fix tampered banner, flash stock Rom and return device. No one knows the better .

True true. The example I use for my case though would have to be the note 2. Once that got locked up on an OTA it started selling like hot cakes. 100-150$ for a new phone is perfectly acceptable for me though. I am losing some money but the enjoyment from the phone is worth it :good:

The day you buy a phone is the day it's old. These guys have at least two models when they release the "current"phone. They pay for the new phones research costs.

I did this to get the DNA, SG3, SG4, M7, bought M8 on contract, still have mint M7 and mint M8 and those will be sold to fund next flagship device of my choosing to buy off contract until I have my contract ready, or a new phone is out.
Personally, for me. I think I might deviate away from the HTC One series devices unless they make some serious design changes which I do not see. I don't truly have a need for the boomsound speakers and would give those up for a regular phone speaker and a smaller phone overall. (Just imagine the M8 without the top and bottom speakers, jeez, or even without the wasted htc logo bar) - sorry for off topic.
Dude, this is HTC WAY OF OPERATING. more than the others. I know, I was a huge HTC fanboy. I bought the Sensation, then 3 months in they announce Amaze...bought the One X only to hear DNA. I THINK THEY DEVELOP TWO at a time. I left for LG with the Nexus 4 then the G2, but get this, while waiting for the G3 I bought the M8 cause I couldn't wait any longer.
I'm big enough to say NO MATTER WHAT A COMPANY DOES WITH RELEASES I'M GONNA *****....I have a problem

I don't get it man. There are talks about the m9 but that doesn't mean that it's going to be released soon. The earliest would be around January. Talks are just talks and they're more than likely leaks.

Does the M9 you speak of make your current phone any less usable? I dont understand this way of thinking. You could wait for this new phone but then again you might as well just keep waiting from now on because there's always something better down the line. Enjoy what you have.
Samsung, HTC, and Apple all release one phone a year in its line (ex Galaxy S). So the M9 in Q1 of 2015 is right on schedule. You're mad about that? I bet the iPhone 7 will be out summer 2015... Doesn't mean people won't buy the 6 this summer.

Not mad at all. Such is life in this fast-paced world of technology.
the only thing i am angry about is the stupid black htc bar what a waste of real estate. I do witsh his thing had a 5.3 inch screen. then it would be perfect. its super fast no lag and it looks cool. o ya and it has s-off
