How to enable USB debugging with broken screen - General Questions and Answers

Today my Galaxy S4 broke and the screen shows nothing and the touch does not work. I know its broken by the fact its shadered too. Im getting a new phone but I need to get some things off of it before I do but there is one fatal flaw... USB debugging is off. This means i can't use adb or any programs like [email protected] to get the files off or enable debugging. Iv been spending hours trying to figure out how to get my pictures and files off but with no luck and im getting kinda frustrated.
I am using a Galaxy S4 running Android 4.4.2 and it is Rooted with SuperUser, if that will help at all.
Any way I can get my pictures and files off is welcome, but please do not just point me to a different forum as iv been looking for hours and can't find anything. Google was not in my favor this time...
Also note I am not using a SD card, kinda dumb on my part...
please help...

Hi,
Is your Galaxy S4 is secure-locked?
Also, this thread should be moved to Q&A section of Galaxy S4 forum so Galaxy S4 users are able to assist you more.

Don't worry. I'm also a Galaxy S4 user (yes, it's GT-I9500!).

I don't really know if you're on a custom rom but found something with Kies
Kies will not let you access your phone unless you unlock the screen on the device, this can be done relatively easily!
Go onto the Samsung website and click the 'find my phone' button (or simply google this).
Log in and there will be an option on the left hand side of the screen to unlock your screen remotely, click this and when the progress bar filled it will say 'your phone is now unlocked'.
Connect with your USB Cable and Kies will allow you access to your files.

This just happened to me! Phone works but screen and LCD broken and unresponsive. I had a screen lock too so what I did was I took off the back plate, removed the battery, and unscrewed the six screws to uncover the PCB board under the back housing. Then I carefully disconnected all the tiny ribbon connectors. I waited a minute just to be superstitious and then reconnected all the ribbon connectors and put everything back to how it was. Then I downloaded Kies from the Samsung website, plugged my phone into a computer via USB and was able to view all my files! Something about disconnecting the PCB board resets the default settings to factory state but doesn't delete any data at all.

The first one with "Find my phone" doesn't work anymore, plus i don't have a samsung account i use Google for everything.
The second one i don't want to open up my phone because im using it with US cellar on a 2-year contract, meaning if i totally break it (not just the screen like it is now), then i wont be able to trade it back in and get at least some of my money back.

Guys I have a big problem. I just bought a galaxy tab 2 10.1. I rooted and than I installed Rom manager. And I used Rom manager to update the CWM. When I did that it asked me what device I have, and by mistake I choose galaxy tab 10.1 (the first one) and after reboot the tab is not turning on anymore. Can't go in recovery or download mode. I tried everything.
Its weird because Its just a recovery not a kernel or a Rom. Please any ideas?
The main question here is : how can I go to download mode without a button combinaton . Or how can I rewrite the bootloader or recovery.
Thanks

Okey, this seems to be bad. The regular answer would be: take it to a service and get it looked at.
The long answer involves a few questions first:
1. Is your tab charged?
2. What can you see when you plug it into a charger?
3. Does the screen light up when you power it up?
4. Do you get to see the "Galaxy Tab 2" logo after powering on?
Also, please describe EXACTLY what you did and what HAPPENED. It is very important to go into as much detail as possible (did the tab reboot and when, did you get any errors, how did you flash etc.)
Cheers,
C.
It probably is charged.. When I plug the charger the screen shows nothing but if I leave it with the charger plugged in for some time I can feel the back cover being warm so I presume its charging. When I power on the screen backlight does not activate.
When I plug the usb into computer I just hear the sound that windows make for " new device detected" and an instant later the sound for " device disconected of unrecognized". I checked the device manager when I plug it in and it just shows TIOMAP 4460 for half a second, the cpu code nr.
What I did is exactly what I said..after I installed Rom manager I just thought its a good idea to update cwm and I used the option in Rom manager to do that. When the app asked me what device i have I selected galaxy tab 10.1" . In dont know why I did it...I have android devices since 2 years ago and I tinker with them, I usually know what I'm doing. Anyways, the app downloaded the recovery and rebooted. And that's where I am now. A dead tablet. Thanks for trying to help.
The thing is I bought the tab from Costco and I initially bought the 7" and by mistake the salesman gave me the 10" ... So I don't really want to take it back yet because I will and up with a 7". And I love this one Already.

Questions should be asked in Q&A forums, not development forums.
Thread moved.
I would say it is completely broken. You installed a different recovery which on another device is located differently than on this tablet, so basically you wrote over something that was necessary for the tablet to boot. Your only option is to take it back.
Screen not turning on is a bad sign.
The second tab generation has separate recovery images, so what you did has little chances of bricking the device. To test this, I have intentionally flashed the recovery of the 1st generation 10.1 tab using ODIN. Flashed fine, recovery didn't work anymore, but I was still able to reach download mode and flash a proper recovery.
So, try to charge up your tab for a few hours (maybe over night) using a power outlet, and try again tomorrow. If the screen still does not turn on (i.e. receive power - should lighten up just a bit, not turn all white) then my opinion is that you have a hardware failure.
I encountered a similar problem with my P1000 in the past, so just be patient. In the end, if it doesn't turn on, think about it this way: a smaller tablet is better than no tablet, right?
C.
Pay Costco the difference and then return it to Samsung for repairs.
I should I pay Costco anyhing ? I can just take it to Samsung myself... The problem is that I'm a seaman sailing in Alaska...not to many Samsung service centers here. Well I still have 8 days untill I reach the town where Costco is so if I can't fix it untill then I'm just gonna take it back and hope they give me a new one (7" or 10.1" doesn't matter).
Thanks for all the replies guys.

After you get your new tab or repaire this one get rid of rom mngr. This program causes more problems than what it's worth.

Ok i returned the tablet and got a full refund.
What should i get now? Wal mart sells the GT 10.1 first model at 300$... and i think this one is better than the tab 2.... advice please

Tab 2 is better, having original before Tab 2 is quicker , sound quality is much better with front facing speakers . No camera flash? No big deal, its a Tablet not a camera. External SD is better than no ext SD.

Recovery Data and Unbrick HardBrickedked Phone

Hi,
My phone doesn't turn on at all and it is hardbricked. I was just wondering if there is any way to get back the data in which I have saved on the phone by any chance? Such as my pictures and so fort.
Also, how can I go about fixing a hardbricked phone by myself. I don't want to pay to send the phone in to anyone. I've looked around, but it seems most of the solutions on google are to fix softbricked phones.
Im using the Galaxy SII I727 btw.

@OP You might try something like Recuva but not sure that will work for you since you probably are not getting power to the device at all. Or you could build your own JTAG box but I would think that it would be cheaper to send it out than build a box yourself.
How do you know your phone's bricked? There are plenty of reasons that it wouldn't turn on, most notably a dead battery.
If you are hard-bricked, then no. Your app data is gone, though you can always pull your external SD out and get that data.

[Q] So.. a good old fashioned brick, need help.

So, as title says, I think I managed to brick my tab for good, but you never know, so I'm asking for ideas.
Basically while I was rooting it the power of the building went off, and like a dumb monkey I was rooting it with the desktop PC instead of the laptop
Now it doesn't turn on, download mode doesn't work, if I plug it on PC gives a wrong name and fails to find the drivers (that were already installed and working before). I tried removing the battery to make sure it wasn't in some weird stuck/bootloop situation, but it didn't change anything.
Other ideas? I'm willing to try more or less anything at this point
Edit:
If it helps, it is a p3110 (galaxy tab 2 7.0 wifi only)
And the only sign of life I get is by plugging it on the PC it keeps detecting for a second the cpu (OMAP4430)
If you cant get into download mode then it needs a jtag. Sad to hear. Most times it's a user flashing the wrong recovery/rom. Never power loss.
Talk about bad luck... Sadly what you have right now ia called a hard brick. Your gonna need a Jtag to bring your device back to life. You can contact certain people that offer that service for around 40.00$ I wish you goodluck.

I thought it was because the transfer of the PDA was halted midway since the PC was turned off by the power failure. Oh well...

Seems I can't find any that do it for the p3110 here in Italy, I might have to ship it overseas, so I figure it'd be more like 75+$
Is trying to send it back to Samsung worth a try?
Hi,
i have same problem with Galaxy Tab 2 P5100 several month ago. If your device is bricked and can't be turned on in download mode best solution for you is sending it to Samsung. Because Galaxy Tab 2 it is impossible to repair it with JTAG yet. I've visited a lot of masters in my country - all said that it is unbrickable now. Also i've visited official Samsung service and they proposed to replace entire board of my tablet because it they can't repair it programmatically.
I assume you tried booting into recovery?
Any chance ODIN detects it ? Anything at all.....

Samsung seems to be quite open to ignoring similar details, I'll just say "it doesn't boot up" and see.
It worked a couple of years back when I sent back a galaxy one with issues reading the external SD that would boot into a custom rom
And a clearly opened monitor that I broke trying to get the panel out to do a DIY projector ;D

My issue is extremely complicated. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. I'd rather not do a reset because I have too much I need on there. So here is a breakdown. I have a working SIM card, Just replaced screen after ex broke it last year. its not attached to my google, findmymobile does not have my phone on there. USB debugging is not checked on my phone. again i cant hard reset it because i need whats on my phone. there has to be something i can do.

What the heck did I just buy ?

Hello folks, I guess I need help with this one :
Not a big Samsung fan but found a good deal on a S7 (craigslist) and got the phone without much homework.
After getting it home, see a few things that I don't like :
back plate says is 'Galaxy S7' and looks legit to me
power up screen also says 'Galaxy S7'
and displays t-mobile logo (supposed to be a tmobile phone)
but settings > about phone >model says 'SM-G920T'
Which turns out is NOT a model for S7 from what I can google.
Also - looks very thin on apps, as in hardly any at all, but has something called 'kingroot' which looks rather strange to me. Samsung including this on their phones ?
So, what the hell is this thing ? Is there a way to tell if it's been played with software or hardware wise ?
Any help from the connoisseurs of all things Samsung Galaxy greatly appreciated. And I know I', in the right forum for that, so thanks in advance.
BTW - not putting a SIM card or connecting this to any private wifi till I have some idea what it is I'm looking at.
Thanks
Sounds like a s6 from the model number, is there a space to put in an sdcard? If not then its an s6.
Yes, there's a tray holding the nano-sim+microSD card. Need to eject with a pin of some sort, in this case was a paperclip.
I know - search results point to S6, but that doesn't look right either.
Why I'm wondering what this thing is
Hope the experts will chime in.
Please post pictures of all sides. Also check image and video resolution and if the camera on the back has working image stabilization (open camera and move device while watching camera, it should stabilize itself)
Sounds like a fake to me
Try putting the phone in Download or Recovery Mode and see what it says.
Vol-Down + Home + Power on for download mode, Vol-up + Home + Power on for recovery.
It's probably a fake phone. Checking what the baseband version is in the Settings menu may help too.

Some more info following your advice (thanks all !!!)
baseband : G930FVPU1APV5
there's no IMEI on the back that I can see/identify
recovery mode stops at a dead android screen saying 'no command' (that stopped my heart too for a sec ) , then the home button goes to recovery menu that says
system recovery <3e>
LMY47I test-keys
and a lot more that mostly does nothing - no ROM anywhere I looked
Apply update from sdcard/cache - no go
reboot to boot loader did not work either, unclear why and no time now to play with this
The good news : it is a working phone, the seller was using it and took out his sim and sd card after using it.
Bad news : still no clue what I got, some kind of frankenphone.
I will try to upload pics - only I don't know how yet
Whatever this is, since can't trust it in current state, what ROM should I put on before trying to do something with it . And if I install another ROM, would this be safe to use - assuming it does what I want it to do ?
Thank you all for the replies, will keep digging and still hope some expert will weigh in.
Your help greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I'm dumb getting a phone I know nothing about from a stranger. Your point is??
So got into bootloader and got jiggy with it and it says it's a 930f.
And assume it will be good enough for what I need.
I'll go full geek on it and find a good rom.
Anything that has the fm radio app?

hey dude, I did not called you dumb but pretty sure what you did was not smart. why don't you send us some pictures of the phone? especially from the sides and back and we can quickly see if it's a ripoff or not.
No, I'm dumb and manly enough to admit it.
Did not do my homework so is my fault and paying for it.
In better news looks like I may have something I can work
with.
As long as I can get a rom I like. What's on it now is definitely debilitated, hardly anything there but don't trust it.
That and don't have a nano sim yet.
Waiting for rom recommendation, preferably with fm radio included.
Thanks again all!
I don't think you understand. Alot of people here believe you have a counterfeit phone. If you do, then you have something that may have 1/4 the screen resolution, 1/4 the power and 1/5 the camera quality of the S7. Get the IMEI (settings > about phone) and check on swappa to confirm if you have a S7. Also, If you have a black image, does the screen off or does it have a slight glow (OLED screen should be off when a black image is on screen). If you do have a counterfeit, no rom on this forum will work with your phone. The other thing to check would be to try to boot to download mode, as only authentic samsungs have it. It's important as most rooting/custom roms involve you first flashing something in download mode via Odin.
Here are instructions for entering download mode:
Switch off your smartphone completely.
Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneously.
Release these buttons when the Warning screen pops up.
I also fell for a counterfeit a few months ago. I spent ~$600USD on a white S7 from ebay. Fortunately, Ebay's seller protections were able to allow me to return the phone for a full refund.
"I also fell for a counterfeit a few months ago. I spent ~$600USD on a white S7 from ebay. Fortunately, Ebay's seller protections were able to allow me to return the phone for a full refund. "
I also fell for some fake headphones from eBay. Broke after 4 mos, sent them to Shure for warranty, came back "counterfeit". Found out Paypal has a 180 day refund policy. Notified them and had a full refund from the seller in about 5 min. Just an FYI.
Looks like either:
1. A cheap Chinese clone
2. A rooted Galaxy S6 (which is what the kingroot app is AFAIK).
Get your SN and restore it through Samsung Switch in Windows. This way you will find your phone back to a stock rom and not custom rom.
OK gang, is a clone s7. Big disappointment. But got to pay the price when I'm stupid.
Any one here needs one of these, can cut you a good deal
No clue what to do with it, ideas ?
