Edit: Just realized that this is not necessary. Fixed by removing basic visual voicemail from your account.
DOH!
So....nevermind.

I have an OG Droid running Pete's Bugless Beast 0.6.2.1 with Chevy's 800mhz low voltage kernel. I am trying to set up the Google Voice app. I have everything configured, but whenever I get a voicemail I get a notification from both the carrier voicemail and the Google Voice app. I have tried changing both voicemail numbers, deactivating and reactivating the Voice account, resetting the Voice notifications, and have cleared my inbox for both.
If you have any ideas or solutions, please post below.
I'm writing this on behalf of a friend, so I don't have a Nexus S 4G to play with, but I have an Evo and am familiar with the vanilla android experience.
I have a separate GV number from my Sprint number and can get text messages for either. I also use GV as my voicemail provider.
My friend just got a Nexus S 4G, which has the Sprint/GV integration out of the box, instead of having the option (which I turned down, as I like them separate). He was getting a stock SMS app notification AND a GV notification for every SMS received. There's an option to disable the SMS notification in GV, but it must do something else, as checking/unchecking didn't do what I expected.
It wasn't until I uninstalled GV for him, and separated the Sprint/GV integration (getting him a new GV number) that the extra notifications stopped.
Now my sister has just gotten a Nexus S 4G, and she isn't very tech savvy and is on the other side of the country, so I'm to wondering if there's an easier way to accomplish getting rid of the extra notification.
I've read online about disabling Inbox synchronization to "fix" this, but I don't know if that will cease the voicemail notifications she's getting as well. Can anyone gimme an answer for that? Thanks!
Go to the SMS app and turn notifications off for that?
My new Nexus 5 is being shipped and in preparation of getting used to Hangouts as the default SMS app, I've installed it on my Sprint GN2 with Cyanogen 10.1.
A few things have changed for me:
1) I'm getting an SMS notification in Hangouts for certain Twitter posts. Why? They are coming from user "40404" or similar. (I deleted so not sure of exact numbers)
2) My Sprint voicemail notifications are going to Hangouts as well. With Sprint, I've always had a voicemail apk for visual voicemail. Even on any custom ROM I've used, I've always just d/l the voicemail.apk and it just works. Now Hangouts has taken over my Sprint voicemail (not Google Voice ).
Anyone know how to disable this activity? I really don't want Hangouts to be the default notification app for everything. Also, anyone on Sprint, how do you get your voicemail without the Sprint apk?
Thanks
Well, you're getting twitter alerts in Hangouts because you have Twitter text alerts turned on. They're just coming to Hangouts now. Where all your texts are coming. I don't see why this is confusing.. ?
If you want them off, send "off" to 40404.

It's confusing because I never received Twitter notifications, period. Soon as I turned on Hangouts SMS, they started appearing only for 1 person I'm following.
Look at my Twitter settings and maybe you'll understand the confusion.

Well, those settings make it odd, but still - reply with "off" and they should stop. 40404 is definitely an SMS alert.
Here's the voicemail notification I'm getting as well.
Performed the "off" command to Twitter and received confirmation. Not sure why using Hangouts turned it on secretly???
Also, figured out the voicemail issue is a Sprint visual voicemail issue, commonly known as the 9016 text message. I assume that Sprint sends an SMS to the visual voicemail app to trigger a notification. The 9016 text gets hidden somehow with stock firmware. I can stop the 9016 text but still need to figure out how to get the visual voicemail app to download and store the voicemail.
It will be interesting to see how a N5 purchased from Sprint will deal with voicemail.
Hey guys,
This is my first unlocked phone for sprint so it doesn't have any of the bloatware from sprint or the voicemail apps.
I'm getting a bunch of texts pretty constantly from 9016 and 8737.
The ones from 9016 say things like "Provisioning successful" and "has sent you a Sprint Voice Message"
I checked my voicemail and no messages are there.
The ones from 8738 start with //LL:
And have a string of text and numbers following.
Can anyone shed some light on these and how to fix this? thanks

sounds like leftover from visual voicemail. it should clear itself up but if you want to call and have your voicemail completely reset (so you have to redo your greeting and lose all voicemails) and it may expedite the process.
So I keep getting a voice mail notification in the status at when I don't have one. I've cleared cache but it keeps coming back.
Any suggestions? It's driving me crazy
Are you using a visual app or calling in? I noticed with T-Mobile VVM I had no visual messages but a spam VM had to be cleared by calling.
I'm on Sprint and added their visual voicemail. Mine won't go away sometimes until I restart my phone.
