Someone please let me know if this update is good to do - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

This version OK3 seems wierd

If are rooted, might want to wait and see if others can root after update. Other than that, I don't see why not update.

How are u still getting ota updates ? Ur not rooted ur stock ?

I just received my Note 5 today as a insurance replacement for my Nexus 5. This update was already done. Going to run it stock for a few days then root it. I'm so used to how easy it is to root Nexus devices. Going to read up well on everything. First Samsung device (touchwiz makes me barf) lol

Its typically pretty simple ODIN stuff. Plug in device to pc, flash kernel with odin, flash recovery, and then flash su.zip with recovery, reboot. Done. Can flash roms after that from recovery.

Updating to Official 2.3.6 while rooted

Update will remove root and will fail if you have CWM installed, it requires stock recovery to apply (this is of course if you go the official update route).
Return to stock recovery
So how do I return to stock recovery from cwm? I'm not so concerned about this update, but I'd like to use stock ics when it comes out. ( keeping root, of course)

Flash stock recovery with ODIN, make sure there is not a kernel in the .tar or the flash counter will trip.
Another question and sorry if I sound like a newb! Will I easily be able to reroot my phone?

If you get familiar with ODIN (and heed the same warning I posted above) all you end up having to do is flash CWM recovery and then install superuser via an update zip file. You may have to flash it "2 - 3 times to get it to complete without error" I am not sure why it does that but I followed the instructions around here somewhere.
Many thanks to you guys! I had the same question.

[Q] Root issues after 4.4.2 update

I manually sideloaded 4.4.2 onto my nexus 5 all was good and root appeared to be working as nova, lightflow, adblock all asked for permission upon reauthentication. However when i went into supersu it prompted for a updated. Which I continued as normal but it fails. Even after reboot.
I've even tried using cf-autoroot again to no luck.
Whats the best solution for me.
Nexus 5 - 4.4.2 KOT49H from 4.4 KRT16M
Root : Supersu by chainfire using cf-autoroot.
Nova launcher seems to be able to use root as does lightflow and root explorer.
Adblock asks but cannot change the files it needs.
Any extra information needed I will gladly produce

I thought not having a custom recovery was the way to ensure OTA updates?
But if I'm not going to be getting OTA then I'll go for it.
Whats the best one for Nexus 5, as i used to use Clockworkmod on Galaxy S2 but i've read TWRP is better ?

custom recoveries in themselves do not stop a OTA. what stops a OTA is the fact that people do system mods and that breaks the OTA.
as for which is best, that falls under best rom/kernel type stuff. pick one.

OTA only check the system partiiton, custom recovery won't spoil OTA.
and stock recovery = no recovery
I prefer TWRP.
If you currently have root access, download teh TWRP app from the Play Store and it'll install itself

You can't have ANY modification. Recovery, Kernel, Binaries(Xposed), factory apps all have to be in tact for the official OTA to work. You'll need to find to flashable version, or flash clean back to absolute stock.

So I flashed TWRP using the app.
and now supersu is up to date.
So in future all OTA updates won't work and i will just have to sideload them like i did with these 2 ?
If that's the case I'm fine with that.
For future OTA you can flash the OTA after the download is provided here, then flash SuperSU immediately after. Also just double check if SuperSU is updated so you have the most recent version.
Thats what I did for the 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 OTAs and I never lost root. All done via TWRP
Thanks all. I've sorted it out. Can close this topic now.

Just so I can update when the OTAs come out. I'd rather not have to wipe and factory reset just to get the small updates they sent.

You can flash recoveries all day and not have to wipe anything. Unless your bootloader is still locked. Have you spent some time reading up on the device at all?

Don't wipe just apply it. The updates have been patched, not the whole rom. If you wipe you could be in trouble.

Disclaimer: These steps are assuming you are running Stock OS! No roms, no camera, sound, etc mods. If you're running a mod, then flash those back to stock to avoid issues.
Download the OTA, as well as the newest version of SuperSU (Version 1.8)
Transfer both files to the nexus via Android Transfer but dont put it in a folder, just so its at the bottom of the list
Boot to recovery
Flash OTA
Immediately Flash SuperSU after
Reebot
Done

I can't confidently say this because I have never used Xposed. But other folks have mentioned disabling it or uninstalling it i think?
As far as mods, if you have the camera mod etc, then just flash the stock APK for that mod so that its back as it was in it's original system state

You might have to uninstall custom recovery and put stock back on but cwm has been able to handle stock updates in the past just haven't tried it on the shield. You'll have to reroot. Supersu has an option for a full unroot as well.

1.- In my experience CWM does not install my otas so i was getting always errors, but you dont need CWM on your device because there aren't roms and they aren't flasheable files on android development so in my opinion you don't needed (I dont needed)
2.- I had to return to 100% out of the box to get again all the otas installed just because of the error i told you on number 1 so i suggest you not to use a custom recovery if you want to install some mods or some addons to android just use xposed framework

[Q] Flash Stock ROM and keep ROOT

Hi, ok, so i'm on CM11 currently and was thinking of flashing a stock rom, but keeping my root and recovery intact; whats the best away of doing this, any ideas?
From what i've gathered i have the following options;
DL and flash stock rom direct from google, reroot and re install recovery (i used wugs toolkit first time round; but i'd rather avoid having to reroot and re-install the recovery if i can)
Flash one of the currently rooted roms in Android Development (this is likely going to be the 'root' i go down; why would i need to flash the radio and or bootloader update???)
I'm just making sure i'm not making this more complicated than it needs to be; that is to say, make sure there isn't an easier method.
p.s. The reason behind using stock rooted rom is simple, i was using Xposed Frameworks and came across Gravity Box, the number of options on it are mind boggling, and i feel it gives me greater control over my phone.
Either way will work. Personally I'd flash the factory image and then re-root, but that's just me. If you go that route use this instead of wugs

I'm in a rush to go somewhere, I very well know 2 ways to go: 1st avenue which takes 20 minutes and 2nd avenue that takes 25 minutes. Both ways are safe to go. Why should I spend 30 minutes analyzing the map to see which is faster and/or looking for a 3rd way if the time will be spent anyways
why not just factory reset and flash a deodexed stock ROM with SuperSU included, there are plenty hanging around development.

Is their literally a step by step to flash back to stock ? Mistah seems like your way is fairly simple ? Is there a guide to that anywhere ?
I have a GS3 (SGH i747) on CM11 and just want to be able to use MHL / HDMI.. Which the CM currently does not support.. Dont really want to go back to stock but I need MHL to work and I'm not sure any other way ?
Is there another ROM I can flash that supports it MHL that is decent ? If not, I dont know exactly how to get it back to stock if someone can help ..
Thanks.

There are return to stock guides in all the s3 forums here. Essentially you'll be flashing the official .tar via odin.
If you cant find the guides, ask there not here. This phone is completely different. Your method is not the same.
