Hi, ok, so i'm on CM11 currently and was thinking of flashing a stock rom, but keeping my root and recovery intact; whats the best away of doing this, any ideas?
From what i've gathered i have the following options;
DL and flash stock rom direct from google, reroot and re install recovery (i used wugs toolkit first time round; but i'd rather avoid having to reroot and re-install the recovery if i can)
Flash one of the currently rooted roms in Android Development (this is likely going to be the 'root' i go down; why would i need to flash the radio and or bootloader update???)
I'm just making sure i'm not making this more complicated than it needs to be; that is to say, make sure there isn't an easier method.
p.s. The reason behind using stock rooted rom is simple, i was using Xposed Frameworks and came across Gravity Box, the number of options on it are mind boggling, and i feel it gives me greater control over my phone.
Either way will work. Personally I'd flash the factory image and then re-root, but that's just me. If you go that route use this instead of wugs

I'm in a rush to go somewhere, I very well know 2 ways to go: 1st avenue which takes 20 minutes and 2nd avenue that takes 25 minutes. Both ways are safe to go. Why should I spend 30 minutes analyzing the map to see which is faster and/or looking for a 3rd way if the time will be spent anyways
why not just factory reset and flash a deodexed stock ROM with SuperSU included, there are plenty hanging around development.

Is their literally a step by step to flash back to stock ? Mistah seems like your way is fairly simple ? Is there a guide to that anywhere ?
I have a GS3 (SGH i747) on CM11 and just want to be able to use MHL / HDMI.. Which the CM currently does not support.. Dont really want to go back to stock but I need MHL to work and I'm not sure any other way ?
Is there another ROM I can flash that supports it MHL that is decent ? If not, I dont know exactly how to get it back to stock if someone can help ..
Thanks.

There are return to stock guides in all the s3 forums here. Essentially you'll be flashing the official .tar via odin.
If you cant find the guides, ask there not here. This phone is completely different. Your method is not the same.

Check the device firmware type by going to Setting - about tablet - built number
Download the right firmware pack for your device.
http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_Infinity_TF700T/#download
Now extract the zip file and you will have another zip file.
Rename that zip file as "EP201_768_SDUPDATE" and place it to an external sd card if you do not have a custom recovery. If you are rooted and unlocked plus you have a custom recovery you don't need to rename it you can place it in internal sd is well.
Now turn off your device. Hold power button including the volume down button and enter custom recovery. For stock recovery it should detect it automatically and will install. once in custom recovery clear your cache and install the file with the name above or whatever name you have. once installation is complete. reboot the system be patient and you have the latest update.
You can obtain root easily using this method.
Just download the DebugfsRoot_Generic_v2.3.zip file from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1706588
extract the content and run RootDebugfs, then follow the on screen instruction and you will have root.
Make sure you have USB debugging on.
To get custom recovery. Download goomanager from playstore and you can install TWRP recovery from the option list. which is Option - install OpenRecoveryScript.
I am not responsible if you mess up your device. do these at your own risk. Nonetheless these steps work perfectly for me.
Renaming is not needed.

Wrong, flashing an official rom will make you loose the custom recover too, you will have a clean stock rom once you do that. AND also this thread has nothing to share with the development forum.

Where in there? Can;t find it?
1) If I am on a custom ROM can I flash the new update or I have to go back to STOCK first?
2) What's the big deal with loosing CWR and Root, it takes like 2 min to put it back, I mean there is another way to not loose it?
Thanks
I also have a question! Will this allow for OTA updates even if our bootloader is unlocked? And will we be able to flash the JB update from ASUS manually if not? Anyone know?

Yes. of course you can flash manually just like any other rom.

You don't need to have stock rom. As long as you have the stock kernel your ok. You will of course lose custom recovery but its easy to download again as i have mentioned in my first post.
There is a lengthy way to do this. But why do that when it takes you literally 2 minute to root it with DebugfsRoot .
Hope it went well for you.
I've got an HTC One X that unfortunately has not survived several attempts to tinker with it (screen replacement didn't go as planned). I'd like to attempt to repurpose it. It boots, I can access it via adb. I was hoping that I'd be able to use something like my hdmi out dongle to get some kind of output, but for some reason, it's not working (can't remember if I need to enable it in the software or not). Wondering if there's a way I can either flash some software to the phone, access it via abd to get hdmi working, or some other solution that I haven't thought of. It's currently running some version of CleanRom (can't remember which at the moment) and I can get a screen cast (albeit laggy) from a java app I found floating around the internet.
Any suggestions from the smart folks here?

This is a pretty good solution. At this point I think I'm just looking to figure out a way to flash a rom that would give me HDMI out by default. I used to be able to flash things via Odin, but that was with my samsung phones. Not sure if there's a similar process for the HTC guys. And also not sure if there's a way to get whatever ROM to output to HDMI without having to mess with settings. Ideas?

Then it might be the fact that my ROM doesn't support it? I'd have no problem flashing back to stock, I just need a way to flash either via adb, or another non-recovery based method.

You can flash roms via adb on some phones via fastboot update if you are HTCDev unlocked. I have not done this nor I have I heard of anyone doing it with a One X. But since your phone is already on life support, what's the harm?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flashing_Guide_-_Android#ROM_Flashing_2
I would try to use a stock rooted rom rather than anything custom.

Excellent. I wasn't sure if you could do this with any ol' zipped ROM or if there was a special file format that needed it. I'll give this a go tonight and see if it pans out. Thanks again for the suggestion!
Fastboot won't let you flash any unsigned zips. Ur best bet is to pull the system.img and boot.img from a ruu, then with adb, dd the system.img to dev/block/mmcblk0p33 and boot.img to dev/block/mmcblk0p21, reboot and your back to stock

For system.img
dd if=/"location of system.img without quotes" of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p33
For boot.IMG
dd if=/"location of boot.img without quotes" of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21

So I recently rooted my G2 to remove the bloatware apps and maybe install CM 11. I downloaded ROM Manager and I tried to install the CWM recovery through there but it seems like it's not doing anything. Every time I press "Reboot into Recovery", it restarts into the stock recovery (I'm assuming). And this recovery doesn't have an option to install from .zip, which means I can't install the CWM recovery. It only has install from SD card, which doesn't have anything in it, install from cache and install from adb. I have CM 11 running on my nexus 4 ( I used the installer) and that has a CWM recovery so I know what it looks like.
Am I doing something wrong or missing a step? Is there another way to do it?
Thanks

That was exactly what I needed. The issue with stock KitKat is the bootloader is locked and the way we got around it with JB has been patched. There are some amazing people though that found a way to downgrade the bootloader and kernel to get around this. You can find the very simple and easy to use app over here. I recently used it myself and it literally takes about 30 seconds to do and you will have TWRP 2.7 when its all done

From start to finish, skip over what you've already done.
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Root.
3. Install custom recovery using fastboot,
Google TWRP Hammerhead and the site for the recovery image and instructions will show up.
4. Have the modems downloaded, search for the thread here in Nexus 5 forum.
5. Go to Install .zip in TWRP recovery and flash the respective modems.
Protip : look up how to make an EFS backup just in case you somehow manage to corrupt your IMEI.

You don't need to be rooted persay to flash a modem, just a custom recovery. It just makes things easier. If you're going to unlock for sure, rooting makes things easier even though you don't REQUIRE it.
Best of luck and let us know how it all goes.
Why not extract the radio from the Android image and flash it via fastboot? That doesn't require root, only the phone to be unlocked.

Hi guys,
I run rooted unlocked Nexus 5 with CM11. I wanted to update the ROM but it failed - I read a bit and found out that it is due to old bootloader version. I would like to update it but I'm not a friend with ADB and stuff.... It would be great to use the most easiest way. I got OTA update notification but have no idea what it does - will it unroot the phone? will I lose CM11 ROM? Just trying to figure out what backups and steps shall I do to update my ROM. How shall I continue from here?
Thanks a bunch!

Attempting to take the OTA will fail.
Download the factory image and extract bootloader-hammerhead-hhz11k.img
Boot your device into bootloader:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-hammerhead-hhz11k.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
You have a custom recovery installed, right? Flash the bootloader zip via recovery. However, you need to get familiar with adb/fastboot as you're gonna need them if you ever find yourself in a tight situation to fix your device.
Open the "must read" thread linked in my signature and find the thread which has all the info about adb and fastboot.

You don't need to. Just boot into fastboot, connect to PC, fastboot flash bootloader name_of_file.img, reboot, done
it's easy you must become familiar with fastboot and add the second you aren't it will come back to haunt you
