VPN not connecting on open wifi - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This isn't really a problem with my S6, but I wasn't sure where else to ask so hope someone can help!
My work and university both have open wifi networks that I can use to access the internet with my phone. Whenever I connect to an open network I use a VPN for security (TorGuard) but for some reason I can't connect the VPN to either networks. It works fine when I'm on 4G or my home wifi, so think it is something to do with the open networks at work and university.
Any idea what is wrong and how I can get it going? If it isn't doable, are there any other ways I should secure my phone when connecting to an open network?
Many thanks

Wi-Fi connection problem

Hello everyone,
First let me say what a great forums this is, thanks to those who created it and the people here keeping it active.
I been having a problem connecting to my wi-fi at work. Several people who have mac laptops and iphones are able to find the wi-fi and connect right away in my office.
On my ATT Tilt it doesnt locate it. I enter the network id and when the device finds the signal it asks for a network key
Would anyone know why it isn't getting a network key or where can I find the network key to the wi-fi device?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-impact2oo
The network detected is a security enabled network and you have to ask the network administrator for the key

[Q] VPN connectivity in wm6.5

Hi there,
I have never been able to understand the difference between My ISP and My Work Network. So, I just deleted MyISP. In My Work Network, I have the GPRS connection and it works perfectly fine. If I connect to activesync, I can use internet. Good.
The problem comes when I want to connect to VPN. I make a new VPN connction, I click on it and click/tap connect. it connects GPRS but the vpn doesnt seem to get connected. And every tap will just give the option of CONNECT which basically means that its not getting connected.
Quetsions:
1. What is wrong with my setup?
2. How can I verify that im connected with VPN or not?
p.s: the vpn is managed by a friend of mine, right now its on L2TP and if any changes are required in the settings. it can be changed.
Im using wm6.5 , hd mini.

Using built-in VPN on AT&T (LTE & HSPA)

Has anyone been successful using the VPN function on AT&T's LTE network? I can connect successfully but no web pages will display and it's as if I have no internet connection. Using the same VPN while on HSPA or WiFi seems to work fine, so it leads me to believe it's a problem with AT&T's network.
On a side note, does anyone know if tethered connections also route through the VPN connection on the phone?...and if so, would it hide the tethering from being detected by AT&T?

Not sure if your problem is the same as my. But when I connect to my work vpn, i think it routed all my phone's data to the work vpn connection.
anyone knows how to separate the two?
I want work lync on vpn and others remain using my carrier 3g connection.l

Not quite the same issue, but I'll take a stab at answering your question. That is exactly how VPN was designed to work. If you connect to your work's VPN, everything on your phone will route all of your data through that VPN. It's done at the system level, not application level.

Help me, help tech support

Hey Guy I have been having an issue connecting to my works wifi ( open no password) for a while now.
Any ways I was in a couple spots this week and tried to connect to some open wifi networks. Which go teh same same no connection (just says saved under the wifi networks list)
Anyways if some of you could try to connect to open wifi networks and see if you get the same problem. I also tried this on my home router with the password turned off and same result.
Really look forward to any of your findings
I have no problems here, never had any problems connecting to open wifi on the campus wifi.
I'm on the latest nightly. Have no issues connecting to an open BYOD network at work, which then uses web authentication.
Cisco WLC + AP setup, btw.
thanks guys, hopefully some more people will chime in, trying to explore this, cause i breifly had a oppo find 7a and had the same issue, so the phone isnt defective but there might be a mug when connecting to certain open networks
I also for ****s and giggle tried connecting to a xfinitywireless ap and same issue, should have atleast seen a sign in screen from teh browser

Tether and WiFi Network in one?

I've been trying to figure out how but failing. Is it possible to share my phones Internet using a program like WiFi Tether Router and share my phone on the same network?
If you don't know what I mean, when I join a network my PC or phone can see each other...link to each other for file sharing, connect to things like roku or plex or side sync.... But when the phone is the device doing the tethering it isn't available on the network. ..
Is it possible?
