I'm bootloader unlocked and rooted. This morning I received a notification for a system update. I'm also on the US unlocked A9. Has anyone received the update while being rooted?
I don't own the device but here's usually how it works. If you're on a stock ROM, rooted or not, you'll get the system update notification. However, if you're using a modified /system, ie Root, the update will likely error out while flashing and send u back to the OS

Hello,
How does the upcoming OTA update (4.3) affect people with unlocked bootloaders and custom ROMs? I am new to this and this will be my first OTA update since rooting/unlocking.
Will I even get a notification requesting to update, or will it force me to update? And which should I choose? Will I have to re-root the phone after the update? Or can I even get the OTA update since it is rooted?
Sorry, I have a ton of questions, so if someone can just explain what is going to happen and what our choices are that would be great!
Thanks in advance!!!
-Joe
I'll try to answer a few
...
It seems like the ota is delayed but who knows..
If you want to stay unlocked and rooted don't take the ota until a respected developer says otherwise.
You may or may not get a notification depending on your ROM or other system tweaks. If you are rooted only, you provably will.

The OTA will note affect you at all, you will not even be prompted for it due to running a custom ROM.
If your running a stock rom and have only rooted/unlocked, an OTA will break root and relock your bootloader.
If your running a stock rom/unlocked/and a custom recovery, you'll get prompted for the OTA, but it will not install, it will fail due to the custom recovery (twrp/cwm/etc).
You'll need to Odin to stock to receive an official OTA, but remember there is always a risk of an OTA breaking root permanently....
My advice is to stay custom, and flash a rooted custom stock rom that will surely be appearing here within a day or two of the OTA... But Verizon will probably not release 4.3 to us, and if they do it'll be at least 4 months...
Hello!
I have a Verizon HTC ONE M8 that no matter what it won't download the new update. I've bought 3 of them (identical) 1 month ago from Ebay. One of them was able to receive the update. On the other two i keep receiving the following message: "We were not able to download this update. To retry, go to Settings > Software update. "
My device is S-off (after a lot of effort). I've tried to get rid of all the bloatware and many more by flashing a new ROM. I have tried flashing ViperROM, ARHD, Clean ROM using TWRP Recovery, without any success. All of my attempts got stuck at the booting screen for more than 30 minutes without any success of booting into the OS. Clean ROM even refused to flash properly. Keep in mind that all the ROMs that I've flashed were based on 4.4.2 firmware, the one that my phone came with, not 4.4.3. I've searched on this forum for a flashable 4.4.3 OTA update, but no success either. What's to be done !?!? All my attempts of installing a new OS failed. Please HELP!
P.S: I'm a newbie when it comes to all of this stuff. First time doing S-off/ installing custom ROMs.

You probably won't be able to take the OTA with a custom recovery, it has to be stock. Best bet is to flash the 4.4.3 firmware from the development section since you're s-off, then flash an already rooted stock 4.4.3 rom. It's been a while since I've done this stuff so if I mentioned some incorrect info, my apologies.

I flashed back again the stock ROM and i keep receiving the same message over and over again. No TWRP recovery this time, just the red triangle. I guess my best bet is to try and flash the CleanROM ODEX 4.4.3 as mentinoned here: @branmuffin17
I'll come back with the results.

If you are on the old firmware you need to update firmware separately.
And btw, if you freeze just one system app that can cause a Vzw ota to fail.
Question.....Is the phone active on your account? I also had one in the drawer and got the same error till I switched it to the active device on my account.
It honestly sounds like there is something preventing the ota to even download, if that's the case use dottat's ruu to return to a clean slate, if it still won't download the OTA then I would be willing to bet money that they are defective or not genuine Verizon M8s And if I were to guess it's more of the latter that would be the only valid reason every Rom you've tried fails no matter what.

Based on what you said i went on some websites to check the IMEI/ESN of the device it seems to be OK. After that i went to the Verizon Wireless website to try an activate my phone and when it comes to "Enter your Device ID to check eligibility", I type in the IMEI and the following message apears: "The phone associated with the Device ID you entered is not compatible with the Verizon Wireless network." To me is strange because on the back of the phone it says Verizon 4G LTE. When it comes to the identity of the phone it is a HTC6525LVW. The phone is GSM Unlocked (I use my phone in Europe so i needed it to be GSM unlocked). More strange it is to me that i don't receive the same message when i type in the IMEI of the others Verizon GSM unlocked HTC's ONE M8 that i bought along with this one.
I guess my only chance is to flash the new firmware @here[and after that flash the Deoxed 4.4.3 Stock Clean ROM @here. If it's not going to work i really don't know what's else it's to be done.

The message from the vzw site tells me something is not right.
Google goophone or knock off gs4, the goophone also has an m8 now too... Even with all the branding and everything. And I've seen some gs4s that run what appears to be TouchWiz cloned to a T.
I'd try calling vzw and talk to a rep and it's possible that they could give you more info other than just what the site said.

So I did what I've said:
1. Installed firmware provided here @Tigerstown
2. Installed the Odex Stock Rooted ROM proivede here: @scrosler
I am pleased to announce you that everything is fully functional now
Phone is showing:
Android Version: 4.4.3
Software number: CleanROM 2.0.0 (after flashing it from @here)
Baseband version: 1.09.20.0702
Bulid number: 2.21.605.2 CL362279 release-keys
After managing to flash the 4.4.3 version of Android all went up without any problem. Tried to ARHD but it's still not booting. After that installed ViperROM which went up all, but to me it is not the pure HTC Sense 6 experience i was looking about and all that customization is to much for me, so i flashed CleanROM 2.0.0 and here I am. Everything is as it should be: no bloatware, pure HTC Sense 6, optimized performance... and above all the mobile hotspot is now fully functional, not to mention the EXT SAVER.
As a conclusion, to all that guys that are not able to update to the 4.4.3 version via the OTA updates provided by Verizon do what I did above (steps 1 and 2).
ATTENTION: Your device needs to be S-Off and bootloader unlocked + custom recovery!!!
Another thing worth to be mentioned: it would be great if the admins could flag this thread, cause I've seen so many users on different forums that are not able to update via the OTAs.
In the end i would like to thank to all the devs out there for their work and to the users for their support. Cheers!:highfive:
I've been waiting for the ota lollipop update for my nexus 5 for a while now and it still hasn't arrived. My brother and i both got the same phone under the same carrier and he has the update but i don't. I have installed the developer preview of the os, could that be preventing the update from showing up? Will i have to update manually?
Its a rollout. Not "okay lets give every single person the OTA right now at this exact second".
Just flash the factory images except userdata.img and don't bother waiting.
Who pushes the OTA, google or carrier? I just received my Nexus 5 from Google play. Out of the box it updated to 4.4.4 but now I'm waiting for 5.0. Unfortunately, I don't have a sim card yet, it is on order from Sprint. Would the OTA still arrive without a sim card in it? I am leaving it connected to wifi just in case.

With a Nexus device, OTAs are pushed directly from Google. Carriers are irrelevant since every Nexus device is the exact same, hardware and software. Maybe with the exception of the Nexus 6, downloaded only if you have an AT&T SIM in during installation, but its on a separate partition and they're everything is still pushed out by Google.

You have a rooted nexus dont ya?
Yes that is preventing the update from showing up on your phone...
If you manually installed a custom firmware like the developer preview... You need to manually install further updates to your phone in order to run the desired software. If your phone was stock and ran on automatic updates from Google, then your phone would automatically ask for an update (5.0.x) and you wouldn't be waiting around

Software state has nothing to do with whether the OTA will show up. It can show up even on a custom ROM. You just won't be able to flash it properly.
Youre right..but OTA indicator can be disabled by the developer..anyways the interesting thing is that the OP has lollipop Dev preview on his phone..yet he's waiting for an update..for 5.0? He's got lollipop already. He is waiting for nothing to pop up on his phone

If he's waiting for official release OTA on the developer preview, its never going to happen since its pointless to provide an OTA for those in a developer preview since it is assumed they know how to flash properly in the first place.
If he's on KK, he just has to wait.
If he's on Lollipop 5.0 and wants the OTA to 5.0.1, then again he has to wait.
If the phone is rooted with an unlocked bootloader, but still running stock will the OTA arrive? I have not installed anything custom. No rom, kernal, or anything else.
I'm in the same boat
I actually got my Nexus 5 just two weeks ago. I had a Nexus 5 with Lollipop before and I had a cracked screen so I got a replacement, but with this new one it's still on Kitkat. I've been waiting for Lollipop since I got it and I'm not quite sure what to do. What did the OP do? Have you found a solution?
The OTA`s are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217 and the full images are here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. These kind of threads are so depressing to read :silly:

I got my nexus 5 two weeks ago. Everything is stock, unrooted and on 4.4.4. It's still waiting for the OTA. My nexus 4 received the OTA for 5.0 and 5.0.1 early dec. immediately after unboxing, it prompted update to 4.4.3 then immediately followed by 4.4.4 which was instant but no 5.0 OTA notification yet.
Greetings,
Just bought a brand new (directly from Google) Nexus 5. It came with 4.4.3 and immediately notified about an "update available", in which it downloaded and installed 4.4.4.
I then went on and Unlocked my bootloader in preparation for a root (I did not root yet, full stock). But I am not getting any update for Lollipop, not even when I manually Check for Updates.
Are these OTA updates come/pushed randomly, or did the Unlocking of the bootloader prevented an automatic OTA update?
I am aware of the option to manually update, I am just curious if the Unlocking prevents updates. If so, if I re-lock the bootloader again will I then get the OTA update?
Thanks.
No, it doesn't change anything. OTA updates are staged so you just probably haven't had it yet...
Unlocking does not affect OTA. But keep in mind you'll likely have to re-root if you get auto updated.
Thank you both!
Am I correct to assume that Rooting also will not prevent OTA updates?

Gota. So either:
Stock+Root and no updates
Stock+No-Root
Or Root+Custom
?!

In order for the ota to install you have to be 100% stock system, kernel, recovery, and radio. If you've modified any of those you'll have to return them to stock before the ota will install. There are ways to do that but it depends on the specifics of any modifications you've done to the device. Frankly, it's easier to just flash the new factory image than it is to take the ota if you've modified your device.
Edit, to the best of my knowledge modifying your device, short of deleting our freezing some system files specifically related to receiving updates, will not prevent you from getting the ota, just installing it.

OK, so just to make sure I understand: Is Unlocking the Bootloader making my system not 100% stock? Which means, even if the update downloads it will not install?
Also - again, if I understand correctly - based on what you say I can root, I will receive the update OTA but it won't install. Is this correct?

If you just unlock the bootloader you should have no trouble installing the ota. You'll have to unroot to install the ota. You can use the full unroot option in supersu

I am an AT&T HTC One A9 owner and just got the notification for the update, too. I am currently rooted so am deferring until I can verify that it does not remove the root and/or a supported root exists for the new version. I looked through a few things, but couldn't find any details for the update at all. Anyone have more info?

It does in fact remove the root. I'm on the unlocked version and I took the update. It broke my root. So i just installed the update manually and re-rooted it.
Weird, I just got my second update for the device this morning. I was updated to 1.27.428.5, security patch Nov 1 2015. I'm using an unlocked A9 direct from HTC Canada.
Release notes were:
System Enhancement
Battery Life Improvement
Android Security Patches
Installer was 244.4MB
jbea007 - So its still possible to reroot with it? The way I did before wiped everything and I just got it the way I want it. Could use Titanium, but curious what method you use to root and/or if there's an existing method which doesn't wipe data. Thanks
