Samsung S6 - WEAK WIFI SIGNAL - NO WIFI FOUND - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The WIFI on my Samsung S6 is searching for wifi, but nothing shows up. The SIGNAL is extremely WEAK! When I set my phone on the router, it suddenly comes up my wifi. It means that the signal is very weak. I can connect it, but when I am 2m away it connects off. WHAT IS THIS? HELP ASAP

You didn't write anything about tests and results (same issue or not) using a different wifi router/AP, so I assume you didn't try that. You should try a different wifi to be sure the problem is on your S6 and not on your router before post here your problem.

Weak Wifi reception

A few users reported weak WiFi signal strength on N5. Good WiFi signal strength is very important for me and this is one of things I like on my current SGS, so Im wondering how good is Wlan strength on yours N5 ?
Also Androidizen posted video about WiFi problem:
I received my N5 yesterday and i am facing this weak WiFi signal problem.
I compared it with my Iphone 5.
i was 8 feet away having my back to router, iphone 5 showed full strength signals while N5 showed 3/4 signal strength.
Ive had my nexus 5 for a few days now, and the main thing that is annoying me is the wifi, the signal is so flaky one minute im on full bars, next minute its on 1 or 2, then back to full. this can be in line of sight with the router. Ive tried a few routers at home and at work, same issue. I have tried an iphone, nokia and samsung and they all have a much better range. I'm contemplating taking this back now and getting a refund, as i don't think its acceptable. does anyone else get this constant fluctuation?
I have also noticed when you put your hand over the top of the phone the signal can drop completely. Not taht i do this, but other phones i have do not suffer with this.
i take it not many people are seeing this issue, are others with the phone able to check the wifi range and fluctuations in comparison with other devices. How can it go from full bars to 2, then back to full constantly when other phones are solid. Trying to work out if its worth exchanging for another. Speeds just change from say 72mbs to like 19mbs non stop. Thanks
Side by side with my Nexus 4 I'm getting the same strength and speed.

Do not use the bars when comparing signal.
Download an app that shows you the actual signal level in dbm. Bars can be set to whatever the developer wants. I could make you have full bars at -110 dbm which would be a useless connection, but still show full bars. For the most part, you should disregard them.
Would be possible to boost WiFi reception with a software tweak? Even if Google doesnt provide a fix, could be WiFi signal strength increased in custom roms? I hope some developer will know to answer this.
I have chance to get N5 32gb next week and I really want it, but since Im a lot in other countries, good WiFi signal strength is very important for me (to connect on WiFi hotspots)
Thanx
Is it an issue of signal strength only? Does it ever disconnect you completely? "Strength" would be much less of a concern than disconnects, now THAT would be annoying.

I have read that some N5 owners lost WiFi connection when they were about 10 m away from router. This is unacceptable IMO. I hope software tweak can boost WiFi reception.
I confirm the weak wifi too.
signal
i have nexus 5 16gb white, signal is very very weak!!! i have N4 and GN and have perfect signal!
the problem of weak wifi, is all about the nexus? we have to wait for a fix or should call google and give it back?
I'm facing the same issue. I'm few feets from AP and I'm getting weak and unstable signal. The worse thing is that it is not picking up signal from my main AP (Edimax) at home... It does not "see" the network at all even all other devices at home use it fine.
Very weak signal with this phone, I got full bars on my previous phones in my office but now only 2 bars. If you put your hand near the top of the phone the signal completely drops.
Same issue here, very weak reception. No issues with may tablet or laptops, but Nexus isnt getting good signal. White 32GB.
Yup weak signal. Initially it didn't want to connect to 3g but that was fixed with the service menu. And now I am noticing weak WiFi signal.
I'm guessing this has to do with the antenna.
Its easy to open the phone I'm going to crack it open and see what I find.
Have you folks tried going into your N5's WiFi settings & look under the Advanced submen (press the 3 dots on the lower right of screen)
Tried turning off 5 Ghz band if your router is on the typical 2.4 Ghz band - and if you have the newer dual band N router, enable your 5 Ghz band - could be interferences from other nearby devices or AP ??
Install the free app, Wifi Analayzer from Play Store & run it - take a look at your AP's signal strength, try switching to a less congested channel since the airwaves are shared, regardless which of the 11 channels you are defaulting to ...
Mine is running just fine, -60 to -50 dBm with the N home router behind 2 sheetrock walls.
Compared to my Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy SIII, I have superior Wifi Signal on my Nexus 5 to a very positive surprise...however network drop outs for Cellular connection is quite annoying...
guys try to disable the wifi optimization under advanced wifi setting and set the band to 2.4 . it worked with me :good:
I have to use my 2.4GHz connection because the phone didn't work at all on the 5GHz.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I have this problem too. Sometimes my signal is so weak that it disconnects with the router and falls back on 3G.
I tried everything. Just went into Safe Mode, but Wifi is still weak, it doesnt matter.
I tried to only use 2,4GHz and turned Wifi optimalisation off. Still the same weak signal.
I tested it with the app "Wifi Analyzer" If I stand next to the router it gets about -50dBm. Then I tested it with my brothers Galaxy S2, he got -40dBm. Thats a difference of 10dBm. -40dBm is a stronger signal.
We tried it at the 2nd floor, and he got a better signal again. So it's obviously my Nexus.
Android 4.4.2, stock, no root or something. Google come with a solution please. My previous phone had the same ****ty Wifi (HTC One X).

Flaky wifi - frequently needs disconnecting and reconnecting when using 5GHz wifi

Anyone else having issues with 5GHz wifi becoming unresponsive and needing to be turned off and immediately back on to kick it into working?
I've got Smart Network Switch and Download Booster (switch to mobile data if wifi is no good; use wifi + LTE) both switched off, so they shouldn't be a factor.. I even switched them back on and then off just to be sure that they were in fact off.
After a painful day spent trying to transfer data to the new phone, and installing all of my usual apps - having to disable and renable wifi at least 50 times throughout the day - I decided to switch from using my 5GHz wifi to 2.4GHz (same router), and it now seems fine. Switching back to 5, and I end up back with the same result - wifi will work fine for a while before stopping.
My Galaxy S5 has no issue using the 5GHz (and neither do any other devices I have), so it doesn't appear to be the router (Asus RT-AC87U) at fault unless there's just some compatibility issue with the S6.
Phone is G920I (Australian version, 64GB)

Pretty sure this is a Android 5.0 problem. My nexus 6 has this problem as well. I have the AC68U. I am getting my GS6 tomorrow so I will see if it has the problem then. No problems on 2.4 like you.
Turn off the stupid Smart Network Switching.
noticed exactly the same thing, all other devices in the house are perfect, but the S6 loses connection now and then even when next to the router.
No issues using my 5ghz wifi network and the S6, have not had to disable/enable it once for any reason. Tmobile version.
You might try getting yours replaced, 50 times in a day is insane.
Thanks for the replies guys - oddly comforting to see that some others are having the same issue..
@byronhinson - Can I ask what brand of router you have (since both Prod1702 and I are having the issue with Asus routers + Lollipop)
I have exactly the same issue and on top of that the phone gets laggy when it losts the wifi!
However with classic wifi (not 5Ghz), it works fine all the time!
GS6 32Gb - Australian version as well
Same issue here. I hope they will fix it.
No issues here, 5ghz all day long well when I'm home

I have a AC68U as well (or the T-Mobile 'Cellspot' version of the same), and my Galaxy S6 stays solidly connected to my 5ghz network all day.

Look at the silver lining - at least you didn't spend an entire day unawares and having to constantly switch wifi off and on to kick it back into gear, before *eventually* (after all of your transferring of data and installation of apps was done) thinking to switch to 2.4 and having it work as I did

I had the same problem and my router also is ASUS AC87U , wifi disconnected problem can solved after upgrade your router's firmware.
but there is a very serious problem I found.
on ASUS AC87U 5G wifi + Galaxy S6 , it drain battery very fast and get very high cpu usage at screen off.
it means the phone always keep running and can't get in sleep mode.
connected to another brand router it just be fine, very stable and no battery drain, So, I don't know this is ASUS's problem or Samsung's, that makes me very annoyed :crying:
hope someone can told me how to solve, thanks!

Argh - trying to update the router firmware was the first thing that I tried when I found the issue.. Stupid bloody router kept on saying that I had the latest version, but checking the Asus website shows that there's a later version from 2nd April that requires a factory reset after installing - 2 of the things fixed are around wifi issues..
Updated and so far so good, but I guess a couple of time will tell. I'll keep an eye on battery/cpu usage and see how it goes..
Hopefully a router firmware update will fix the 5GHz issue for others that are having the issue too, at least for those with Asus routers.
For all of you who are having this issue, how is your battery life?
Just got my S6 today, same router as the OP (Asus RT-AC87U) and same problem on 5Ghz. Constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to Wifi.
2.4Ghz works fine
5Ghz work very solid on other devices so i'm not really sure what is the problem.
Galaxy tab S 105 and 8.4 works fine on the same router's 5Ghz network.
5GHz for dummies
I was having similar problems, where two Samsung devices in the house were both having difficulty remaining connected to the AC87U router for any length of time. Sometimes they would continually report Authentication Error but then connect happily after a reboot. Other times, they just would not connect.
In my case, it boiled down to dumb user error. I was using the same SSID for both bands, but had mistyped a character in the password for the 5GHz band and so was only able to connect to 2.4GHz band.
Perhaps this will save somebody else some trouble!

4G / LTE Full bars and drops connection

I have strange problem. When i use LTE I get full bars and everything works fine for a couple of minutes. Then I lose connection. I can not open any webpages, update Twitter or anything else. The bars are full and the 4G icon is there. If I run a couple of apps like LTE Discovery or Network Signal Strength, they both show that I am connected with good quality. But nothing on the internet works. I have checked the APN. It is correct.
If I deactivate cellular data and switch it on again, I have connection for a few minutes again.
If I set it to 3G only, everything is working fine.
I have tested my sim in my wife's iPhone and it works fine, no connection drops.
The phone has been laying around for a while. I just started using it again, but I can not get what could cause this behavior.
I am on Android 6.0.1.
Any ideas on what to try?
Possible loose connection inside the phone? Maybe a factory reset is needed? Is the phone being used with a case that could be interfering with the signal?

I flipped the back cover off and inspected the connectors. They are both seated. I am not using a case. Going to try a factory reset next.
But I don't see how a loose connector would behave like this, keep the connection for a few minutes and then drop? As I wrote I have full bars and both the apps I have tried show very good connection to LTE. Shouldn't a loose connector then show zero?
I believe those are wifi wires.
Is the imei properly displayed in the dialler?
Maybe re-flash the latest stock ROM in fastboot?

Yes, correct IMEI.
Did a full factory reset, but seeing the same. I have got full bars and a 4G symbol with no exclamation mark. I have connection for a couple of minutes and then it drops. Switching to 3G only makes the problem go away.
Going to try a re-flash, but I have never rooted this phone, and I am on original rom.
I see that there are two antenna cables, one white and one black on each side of the battery. Does anyone know which is which? Does 3G and 4G share the same cable?

I am at a completely loss with this. I have searched and I have found a lot of threads on several forums with a similar problem. In fact the problem with intermittent loss of connection seem to go back to the 5.0.1 days.
I have tried everything I can think of, but still I have 4G for just some minutes, then it drops. If I wait another few minutes the exclamation mark shows up next to the 4G symbol. Every "network checking" app I have tried shows I am connected to LTE. In the phones "about"-menu and sim information, it also shows connected. But it's not.
Toggle Airplane mode on/off solves the problem, until it drops again after a few minutes. If I try speedtest I get full LTE-speed before the connection drops. I haven't timed it, but it almost seem to keep the connection for exactly the same time everytime.
This has to be a software bug of some kind, but what can it be??

No, I have not. I will try that as well. Have to look around a bit to find out how.
Yesterday I rooted the phone and installed the latest Ressurection rom. I suppose that came with a new radio module? But the problem remains even there. I am starting to believe that this could be a hardware issue after all. I have ordered two new antenna cables and will replace them. But I don't understand how a faulty antenna wire could cause such an error. As said, it keeps the connection on LTE for a couple of minutes. Switching Airplane mode on/off fixes it for another couple of minutes. If I switch to another apn and back again the LTE also wakes up again for a brief time.
Switching to 3G only works fine all the time. 2G and Wi-Fi also.
And just to know when it says that is connected to 4g is it really connected? Have u tested the speed?

Indeed!
It looks a lot like this:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/o-UyGECxh2k
But having read the thread through, there doesn't seem to be an absolute answer to what is going on.
Tried downgrading the modem to the modem from 5.1.1. No change. Have LTE for 3-4 minutes, then it drops. Shows full bars, but there is no connection. After another couple of minutes the exclamation mark comes next to the 4G symbol. Toggling Airplane Mode on/off gets it going again for another couple of minutes. It drops even if I am using the phone.
Changing to 3G only, works fine.
I have ordered new antenna cables, both the black and the white, and will try to replace those. I don't have much faith in that, due to the nature of this problem. A broken antenna cable should not work for 3 minutes and then stop until reactivated by airplane mode. But, I have run out of things to try.

I am using Telenor in Norway. My wife has an iPhone 6 and I also have a Samsung Galaxy S4. They both work fine on 4G with my simcard.
I had a similar problem in new York. I have metro PCs which is owned by T-Mobile. Every where I checked they said my current APN was correct, but I still had the exclamation point. I ended up fixing it by changing my APN from fast.T-Mobile.com to metroocs. Have you compared the apns from a working phone to the nexus. It sounds more like an authentication problem rather then a signal problem. Or call your carrier.

So... the apn-settings are correct. They are the same as on the S4. I even tried a sim from another carrier now. It behaves exactly the same.
This has to be a hardware issue, even though I can not understand how it keeps the connection for a few minutes and then drops. Doesn't make sense at all.
I had a similar issue with Consumer Cellular (an AT&T MVNO in the US). When preferred network type LTE was selected, the Nexus 5 would go to “No signal” every 12 minutes for 45 seconds. This wasn’t an issue when preferred network type 3G was selected.
I was able to resolve it by modifying the APN slightly, changing the parameter “MVNO Type” to “GID”. I left the MVNO value field to its default value.
This issue started with Android 5.1 and I still need to set that parameter with 6.0.1. Experiment with that setting and see if it helps.

I tried that too today. No change.
But I have discovered something new. If I start streaming a radio station when I still have 4G, it keeps streaming. I left it on for an hour and it kept the connection the whole time. I stopped streaming and started surfing + facebook and it kept the connection.
When I toggle airplane mode off/on or reboot the phone it keeps the connection for a few minutes and then drops. Like before.
Now, this HAS to be a software error of some kind. It almost seems like the 4G radio goes to sleep after a few minutes and then it doesn't wake up again. If I switch to a different apn and back again, it wakes up.
I have made sure that the apn settings are correct. My carrier has confirmed that, and they are exactly the same on my S4, which works fine.
Does this make sense to anyone? What more can I try? Is it possible for the 4G radio to go to sleep and stay off?
Edit: Keep trying new things, and I have discovered that if I connect the charger when the connection is "alive", it keeps the connection. When I disconnect it, the connection drops after some minutes. This strengthens my theory about the 4G radio going to sleep.

WiFi 5G problem?

Where before I had perfect connection with my Z3 using 5Ghz now with the XZ I have problems of connectivity and signal strength
The messages from whatsapp take in sending even when I have 3 or 4 lines of wifi ...
I also had it on the table 4 steps from the router and when I unlocked it, it was fixed that I did not have 4g wifi and it took 10 seconds to connect to the wifi, but while it was blocked I had 4g connection.
Also when I enter home it takes 10 seconds to connect to the Wi-Fi network when my Z3 did it before entering my house ...
Is it a terminal problem or is it losing metallic quality of connectivity?
I also find the 5g WiFi connection is flaky

Only back cover is metallic. The rest of the phone is plastic. Try to factory reset because it sound like software issue.
Running all my devices through 5g ac wifi, i can't see any issue with xz. But 5g wifi connections are weaker than 2.4 thats obvious though, so don't expect same wifi 5g connection quality, unless you are really near from your spot.
Whatsapp is running awfully from 2 days ago, i have suffer the same, problems?, with the sending/reception messages.
Try a factory reset and change your 5Ghz router channel just in case something has changed nearby.

[Q] Note 10 Plus - Wifi Issues

So I have a brand new Note Plus that in two locations will connect to wifi, but I am experiencing significant packet loss (30-70%) if I ping from my phone to the router. Both locations use a Cambium E410 Wireless Access Point. I have taken it to 2 other places and experience no wireless issues.. I was trying to see if it was a 2.4 or 5Ghz issue potentially, but I can't see where in this version of android to force the Note to use 5Ghz vs 2.4ghz. Also trying to determine what other troubleshooting I could perform...

Is the router wireless too? Then switch off the access point and try to connect to the router directly and check. For the best speeds, every wireless access point should be connected to the router with an Ethernet cable. Put all the above - both wireless access points and the router - all on the same ssid and password but different channels so they don't step on each other (which might also be the problem). Then, your devices will automatically connect to the one with the strongest signal and not even know or care about it. You will have to set the channels in use rather than leaving the devices on "auto". You can use "WiFi Analyzer" and "WiFi Tool" - both free downloads on the play store. Don't hide the ssid's - unless it is all working flawlessly - later .

Yes you are right, note 9 the range is better than note 10 plus, this is what disappointed me most.
The rest is ok, I had read note 10 only catch the signal is strong, if its weak it doesn't show in WiFi scanning.
Hope they can fix this.
