I noticed that under my signal bars it now says home. I use straight talk. What is this? Never seen this

I'm new to ATT. So I'm new to 3G. I used to have TMobile, which only has Edge. My signal with Tmobile was excellent. Normally everywhere I went, I had full bars. Well, greater than 80% of the time.
But with ATT, I get 3G, but the signal bars are normally 2-3 in those areas I go. Some places drop to one bar. It seems I can still make calls tho.
But one time I was in the store with 1 bar and it said 3G, I went on Opera. It switched to Edge(E) and the bars changed to like 4 bars. But it was slow. Similar to my Tmobile speed.
So my question is, whats my signal for the phone? Are the bars only to show signal strenghs for 3G and a different one for Edge? I would like to know when my phone is loosing connection.
If so, if my 3G is 1-2 bars, would I not get a faster internet connection on Edge, if I knew(if there was a way to know) Edge has 3-4 bar coverage?
Or for that matter, wouldn't my battery last longer on Edge at 4 bars than 3G at 2 bars while in standby? not connecting to internet, but just by the phone trying to keep a signal?
Looking for an easy way to turn 3g connection on and off. At work, the 3g signal is so weak that it keeps bouncing between 3g and 1x. Whenever it does establish 3g connection, it is usually slower than 1x because of signal strength.
I tried apndroid, but it did not seem to work right. Any other advice?

I use Dazzle. I have a bar set up on one of my screens so that I can toggle mobile data, cell radio, tethering, WIFI, ringer volume, GPS, and screen brightness. There are a couple of other options you can add that I don't use, too.
For me the power control widget that comes by default works fine. You might also be interested in the app Roam Control from the market, if it works for you you could use it to force roam at work. I use it at home sometimes because my house is closer to the Verizon tower than the uscc tower, and sometimes when my 3g signal gets weak I can roam onto Verizon and get faster speeds on 1x roaming.

I tried out roam control. I'm not sure what to think. Previously at my home, we typically get weak 3g signal sometimes dropping to 1x. When I choose automatic mode, I only get 1x. When I choose home or roam, either way I get a consistent 3g signal. I'll have to check at work tomorrow to see how it fares there.
Is there a way to be certain whether I'm roaming or not? When I pull down notifications it says "cellular south" regardless of choosing roam or home. But the results I'm seeing on speed tests are not what I'm used to seeing. (more consistent, constant speeds at both 3g and 1x with better signal strength). I know I'm not charged from roaming, but I figure I'd get in trouble if I'm always roaming.

Enjoying my new Nexus 5 and was previously using my HTC One that never had this issue. I have very poor T-mobile service in my neighborhood and I have a cell booster in my home. Problem is that since I switched to the N5 if I loose my cell signal for more than a minute or two it will not reconnect. I get the exclamation point in the notification shade saying it lost tmobile signal. 9 times out of 10 the only way to get signal again, even after driving into a better area, is to rescan all the networks again and select tmobile where it re-registers on the network. As of now I ahave to do this everytime I leave my home. Does anyone have a similar issue or a possible solution?

I have a similar issue, when my phone has low signal and disconnects from the network, it will reconnect and show i have signal strength, i can surf the internet, but cannot make calls or send texted messages, phone shows "cell network unavailable", if i reboot the phone or turn airplane mode on and off it reconnects properly.
I have the opposite of the LTE dropping problem I see most people have. I can't get 3G, but my LTE works fine (well, once it spazzed out after a PRL update and would only do 0.5mbs on LTE). At work, where I know I can't get LTE, but could get 3G with my Note 2 (and we even have a repeater), I can't get data. If I go to the window where I can barely get LTE and reset my antenna, it'll get LTE, and when I walk away it'll flash 3G for a second and go out. I still get several bars and can talk and text fine. Everyone else with 3G is fine. After thinking about it I realized that in the month I've had the phone I've NEVER been able to connect to 3G in places where I used to be able to. It's LTE or nothing. I'd be more than happy with 3G if the alternative is to read a book. Could this be a SIM card issue? Hardware? Firmware? It's annoying the hell out of me, I work 10 hour shifts at night, I need my data.
Just a follow up, I downloaded a network signal info app and it shows me having a solid 40% signal. Net type: will alternate between EHRPD, EVDO A, 1xRTT, and Unknown. Data state: will alternate between "Setting up data connection" and "no activity". It seems like it's looking for a connection but won't connect. I know the signal is there. The only time I can get the 3G logo to light up is right after going out of LTE range, it'll light up 3G for a few seconds and then go out. My coworkers with Sprint have confirmed the new repeaters we have are working, and I've confirmed it won't hook up to 3G at home like my old phone.
Hey guys
SO I have a weird issue.
In my office, with my wifi connected, I get decent 3g, but if I leave the phone on the desk, I see the phone bouncing back n forth from 1x to 3g. doesnt stay locked in.
When on 3g, I get about -102db, which is sufficient for voice and sms. When on 1x, I get about -98db. Not sure what is causing the constant bouncing....but needless to say, it drains the battery.
EVen while on wifi, i see the radio still bounces from 1x to 3g and back. If I were to get a network extender, do you know if the phone will still look for a a 1x or 3g tower?
I tried the network extender somewhere else, but they had decent 3g coverage anyway. SO I dunno if it still looked for it.
Thanks in advance!
I have the same problems but with LTE
My LTE signal is low so it kills the battery standby. Is there a way to force 3g? All the old apps dont work with lollipop.
