Volume button to unlock - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am extremely satisfied with the stock marshmallow (MRA58N) . The only thing that bothers me is that I need to save my power button (random power off issue when pressing power button, may fail completely in near future). Right now I am using gravity screen app to use my proximity sensor to wake the device. This does not work all the time. I end up using the power button.
I know almost all the custom rom out there supports volume rocker to wake. But I dont want to move to custom rom. So the way is to root. So here is my question
1. Will unlock the boot loader
2. Flash StephanMc_Kernel
3. Install twrp
4. Flash super su
5. After this what to do ?

Your best shot, for stock ROM is Xposed and Gravity Box. But IMO there is some bugs and we must wait little for improved versions.

How the custom roms managed to do ? Will i get a flashable zip for it

I don't understand your question. Please be more specific in your querry and I will respond. In fact you must flash custom ROM for that volume wake up.

Why? If you're unlocking the bootloader, flashing twrp and flashing a kernel you're almost there anyway.

Free "Reboot into Recovery" application

Hey guys,
I've coded a tiny app to reboot your Optimus 2x or G2x into recovery mode without holding any buttons. Best thing is... it's free ;-) It doesn't install Clockworkmod, so if you want an app for that, check out Paul's paid app for that (Which does it on the O2x only)
I'd be really happy if you'd tap the ad displayed in the application, but you don't need to.
Yes, the app is ugly, fugly, disturbing, etc. but hey, it works :-D
It's to be found in the Android Market here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.m...sma.lgo2xreboot, on AndroidPIT.com http://www.androidpit.com/en/android/marke...recovery-reboot and in the attachment of course!
Update: Implented a check if the app is runnning on an LG Optimus 2x or G2x.
Update #2: Made the app less fugly, thanks to fitsnugly.
Update #3: SU660 compatibility
I also attached the source code, if you're interested.
APK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=575213&stc=1&d=1303472096

I think you need to update the description coz right now it includes the message below.
!!! WARNING: DO NOT USE THIS ON YOUR T-MOBILE G2x !!!
You can ignore the warning about the G2x, the guy I asked to upload the app to his Market account needs to remove that warning
Thanks for the app...

Nice job dude
Works great with respect to its purpose. I had trouble with manually going into recovery. After opening it (no problem), if I let the keys go - it turned off - period.
I had to keep holding the power button and take one action with either power up or down button, and then I can let go. With this app - go straight to recovery.
Sorry - did not see an add to click on - maybe because I have ad blocker - lol.
Would the quick boot app not do the same thing?

No, the usual command to reboot into recovery doesn't work on the (G)2x.

Simply amazing, thanks. and for some reason using it is the only way i can reboot into recovery, i stuck with upgrade screen trying get there by buttons combination

nice app, I couldnt get the button arrangement for the life of me lol
this app only works if using the nvflash CWM.
If you only have CWM by flashing it through RM, this app will boot you into 3e recovery, where you can only go up and down, power will not select anything, thus having to battery pull.

Rom Manager has the option to reboot to recovery on CWN that was flashed from Rom Manager, tried it this morning and it works fine. Can navigate the recovery and do what you need to do.

[Q] Nexus s Root with broken power button

Hi. I am new to android and trying to root my Google Nexus S which has a broken power button, so can't use the normal methods.
I have searched but cannot find a way of unlock and or rooting without the power button.
My question is that is it possible to root without the power button working? Can it be done through some terminal commands? I have tried the one click root for Nexus S and that did not work either.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on what Android version you are running. If it's Gingerbread, yes. Otherwise, no.

it says Android version 4.1.2, baseband version i9020xxki1, kernel version 3.031-g5894150
When I used the one click script and it went into fast boot mode, I am sure it said bootloader unlocked or something similar in red.
Thanks.

One click can't do nothing if you're not able to press power when you need to unlock fastboot.

[Q] No-name CM10.1 nightlies ROM sometimes no sound

Hello,
I have flashed these ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159089
I would write my question in this thread but i couldn't ( i must have 10 Posts)
So for the Rom Updater i would tell that sometimes the sound is gone. I would ask waht is the Problem and is there something to fix it ?
Greets
Install the K.A.T Toolbox app.
Open that and in the audio section hit the FS34reinit button to get sound back

I read this in the Thread: FYI - Tim added a GPS fix to the 1.2.7 K.A.T Toolbox.
Uninstall your current one, install the new one and then install the fix.
Should help all 4.2.2 devices get better / quicker GPS fixes.
But wehre can i find a link to the toolbox ?
K.A.T - V1.2.7 [ICS][JB4.1-4.2.x] App | Audio enhancer | Scan Filters | GPS QuickFix
Sent from my Transformer
Or install EOS 4.2 Rom
I had never lost sound anymore since I move to this rom (it was a every day bug before that on stock or CM 10).
I don't use K.A.T. anymore
In case anyone cares: Should be fixed in ROM itself (and also in KAT kernel) since earlier this week.

Thank you josteink so at the moment i hvae no Problems with the Rom. I am very happy
Today i have a deep sleep Problem with my TF. Have anyone the same Problem?
Please don't use the term "deep sleep" when you mean "sleep of death". Deep sleep means something else.
That said : I haven't had a single sleep of death ever on this rom. I've asked some people to provide logs but I've yet to receive any.

i think the problem with capturing a log is that a lot of us wouldnt know what to look for lol

If the log is still there, I'm honestly not sure, since I haven't had this issue myself. That said, I think this is how you'd go about trying to get logs:
1. Learn how to reboot into recovery manually, using the power + volume down, wait, volume up key combo. You'll need it.
2. Ensure you have ADB installed and working on your machine.
3. When machine enters sleep of death, do NOT reboot into normal system.
4. Instead hold down power + volume down until the machine reboots, and make sure you click volume up when asked to boot into recovery instead of system.
5. Connect device (while still in recovery) to a pc
6. On PC run "adb logcat". Et voila!
7. Save that log. You can now boot device back into system.
If that sounds like lots of work, I would like to point you to a post by sidelong in the ROMs main thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39391861&postcount=339
Basically: are you using any Anti-virus or anti-malware software? If so, try disabling that. IMO they're not really that much use, and they have been shown several times to not detect viruses/malware anyway.
Sidelong reports that when disabling those, like me, he has yet to have a single sleep of death.

If you have to ask the answer is no and that is one thing less you need to worry about.
It's software used to overclock your phone.
It also means I have no suggestions for what you need to do to get your tablet stable.
Worst case you can try team eos instead

even for my galaxy r, back button is not working. I was using stock gingerbread. i flashed cyanogenmod nightly and back button doesnt work. so its hardware issue. and my menu button gets executed on its own. so if i can disable these hard keys and get the soft buttons on the screen itself, it wuld solve the problems. help me do it..

Dont panic buddy. be Calm.
Answer these questions:
1) Is you softkeys(Lightning ones) working when you were on GB..?
2) Did you mess up with anything while installing..?? what you did brief your track.
3) Hardware keys are on screen, it may be enabled from Setting. But let give feedback of above 2 questions.
back button problem solved
It was not working in gingerbread too. So i flashed cyanogenmod nightly. However I have found some temporary solution, it was probably hardware issue.
Using ES File explorer or any file manager that has root access, go to system and mount R/W
Open build.prop in text editor
go to the end of the file and add this line
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
save and exit and reboot
when u reboot u will get soft keys in ur screen only so u can use those soft screen instead of hardware buttons and for disabling the hardware buttons u can easily do if u r in cyanogenmod
