Moto X pure case with a flat surface back?
Hi guys, I'm new to XDA. I ordered a product called the Mountek AirSnap and it requires the back of the phone to be flat. What it does is basically a mount you mount on your cars AC vents and it comes with a magnetic adhesive badge that you can put on your phone or case but it requires it to be flat. Anyone know of any cases that would do the trick? Thank you guys in advance.
Just buy some 3m vhb tape. It's foam so it will work with the slight curve of the back. That's what I use for my steelie magnetic mount. Holds on like a wet cat to a screen door.

I am using the mountek snap over a year now but with my nexus 5 (and old nexus 4 before that) with the magnetic strip stuck on my spigen slim cover. And it worked awesome!
I recently ordered the moto x style and don't plan on using the mountek with it primarily because its curved back not providing enough contact.
Also the moto x style is so big and beautiful that I plan to carry it bare bones without any case (not many slim cases out there). That leaves me the option of sticking the ugly magnetic strip to its beautiful back... No way!!
Also beware of the magnetic field interaction with the NFC etc. That thing can potentially spoil the phone, my old nexus 4 touch screen stopped working right in the middle area. I am not going to risk that with the new moto x style

Thank you for the information , I have heard magnetic strips messing up some parts of the phone .. However if I get some kind of heavier case and attach the magnet to that case , do you think that will be enough space between the phone and the magnet to affect it ?

I'm a little confused .. Is the tape itself magnetic ? And if it is then wouldn't the curved back of the phone not provide enough contact to the mount

Yeah I guess thicker the case, lesser the chances of interference... Bear in mind MXPE is already quite thick in the middle, a thick case would make it less ergonomic. Unless you want to just use a case only while driving...
I would suggest buying any cheap easy to apply/remove tpu case and attach the double side tape and magnetic strip on it... I might do that using the tape suggestion..

That sounds like a pretty good idea but wouldn't the curve of the phone (also the curve of the case) not allow the badge to sit properly ?

That's where the double sided tape would come in I believe.. Flattening out the curved back

Have looked to buy some of this 3m tape to use it on my magnetic car holder but there are quiet few versions of 3m vhb tapes.
Do you remember which one you used?
Thanks.
Any kind should work. Just reference 3m website for adhesive properties that fit your needs.

My opinion of the iMagnet dock has slipped a bit after having used it for a while now.
I got it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008IOQ3K6/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and the price was right.
The mounting sticky suction cup works great and it is not too large so it is not obtrusive.
However ... the magnet is just not strong enough. Once you put a case on, the strength (or lack thereof) becomes more apparent.
I put an el cheapo s-view case on and since it covers the back instead of replacing the battery cover, the extra thickness insulates it from the magnet a bit too much.
Yes, it holds the phone. However, the choice of a round-shaped magnet may have been the big mistake.
Since the magnetic field is round, it allows the phone to pivot around the central axis and after a bit of driving, the phone tilts to one side or the other.
A rectangular magnet or at least a much stronger one would probably correct this.
When my Spigen Slim Armor case arrives I will try it out and see if the s-view case if just too thick or what.
I've had the whole phone rotating and less magnetic strength as you op. I used it with my s3 and put the metal plate inside the plastic on my seidio ext battery case. The phone was pretty heavy and it did hold pretty well. A good pothole could knock it off though. It'd be much stronger on the outside of the case but way to ugly.
Now I'm using a ballistic sgmaxx this case is way to thick to put it in the inside. Plus I have a wireless receiver for charging making it a no go. And on top of all that even if I placed the plate on the outside it blocks the wireless charging from working.
It really sucks because I loved that mount. No tabs to adjust, no pieces to break or lose, no clicking it in place and pushing a button to release.

Any luck with the Spigen Slim Armor case? I have the Slim Armor right now and am debating this mount but after reading this thread, I'm a little skeptical. I was thinking to put the round disk between the TPU and Hard Shell of the case so that there's less insulation of the magnet.
I have had this mount for over 18 months starting with my s3. I can see where with the extended battery it may be an weight issue. I have the slim armor case and with the plate between the 2 layers (the hard plastic and the rubber) on my S4 it works great. even in the pot hole state of Michigan. I don't know if the other people are using the large plate that is included but its almost a must in order to keep the magnet in full contact with metal.
Funny enough, with the Spigen Slim Armor, it works better than the el cheapo sview I was using.
The $5 slim armor from AliExpress is just plain awesome, although a little hard to open..
I was thinking of getting one of these.. now I am not

I swear I have been thinking that ever since I got it, I even wrote the MFR and told them if they put an induction charger in there somehow they would make a million fast.
Just wanted to share with you all how the Nillkin Frosted Shield stands out against other cases or protectors. Please refer to the images here. I bought the case right off eBay, $6.90 and comes with a free screen protector.
And oh my this is some quality product! After removing the moto style shell and placed this new case, it still feels great at hand. It makes phone actually much slimmer than using the style shell on its own. Plus it has that good grip feeling, making the phone feels safer for one hand use.
Best of all, it has that ring around the camera lens, making the lens more protected to scratches (i supposed) when you place the phone on flat surfaces.
The downside however is that the module pins are not protected against dust or water. In addition to that, the top corner and down below are not protected at all, so dropping the phone facing upwards or downwards may cause brutal damage to the device.
Cheers.

That's my sole worry with the protective case - the top and the bottom of the phone being constantly exposed.
Otherwise it is one of the sexiest cases around with mild to moderate device protection.
There are discount for this case at nillkin: http://nillkin.org/smartphones-acce...z-accessories/nillkin-motorola-moto-z-frosted
I was wondering since mod pins are exposed, can you attach mods with the case ?
Or you should remove case to attach them ?

The pins are exposed just for looks. The magnets wouldn't hold and the pins can't make contact.

It's the same even with Nillkin transparent TPU cover... it's very thin, so I don't think it could be different with any else...
I'm looking for a thin case that has metal in it so it will work with magnetic mounts. I realize I could just stick one of the metal plates on the phone or case, but I'm looking for something that looks nice.
I guess an alternative would be a cool looking stick on metal plate.
I bought one of the Google Live cases and I pulled out the silly (and pretty much non-functional) NCF switch. I put a Schosche Magic Mount plate on the inside of the case where the NFC switch used to be, and then put a piece of clear plastic packing tape over it so it would not scratch the back of the phone. Works great for me, the plate is not visible and it sticks really well.

The third, and probably most common, option is: you can place the plate in between your phone & your case where it's not visible to the outside world. That's what I did (after wrapping it in a single layer of clingwrap so the metal plate wouldn't scratch my phone's back), and it works great!

I would suggest a case, because accidents happen and yo want to make sure that you device doesn't damage.
Whenever I buy a phone, first things I do is buy a case and screen protector.

Using no case at the moment while at home because the phone is too beautiful to cover! But when I go to work I think I'll use a case just to be safe.
It is stunning!!

Both! naked at home and dressed up case to go!
Leaving the plastic on mine until I pick up a case tonight.
SOOO jealous and anxious .. not getting mine until tomorrow
I always gotta have a case. Just dont want anything to happen to the phone.
I normally get think silicone cases. And thats what i got the s8+. Its nice, thin and has a matt finish for grip.
I did however order a rhinoshield crash bumper. But its hasnt been ship yet.
Case I picked up a spigen case a while ago my phone gets here today
I like to use a magnetic mount in the car, so I had to get a thin case off of amazon to hold the metal disc. I normally like dbrand skins, but without being able to hide the disc under the battery cover like I did on the LG V20, I'm forced into using a case. It doesn't add too much thickness, so I'm ok with it.
I'm using it with no case until my case gets here on Monday. It's giving me anxiety lol
i bought 4 cases: 2 black and 2 clear and frankly none of them are right. the thicker ones get in the way of the edge screen while the clear ones show fingerprints nearly as bad as the beautiful device itself. got to find the right case!
I'm using only a skin. Bit risky but I want to enjoy the feel of this beauty.
Those of you going naked be very careful with it. My Note 7 got scratched up fairly quickly on the back. Gorilla Glass 5 is more shatter resistant but easier to scratch.

Yea I saw a Youtube video saying their S8 already got scratched, too.
I'm rockin a Ringke SLIM case. Extra thin with a grippy rubber-type coating. The case covers all the sides but doesn't get in the way of edge touches. Just wished they made the USB-C hole fitted to the port instead of a big square opening.

You don't need a magnetic strip for this phone. the wireless charger equipment in the phone is magnetic, so no need.
It was same in my S7. I have a magnetic mount and it sticks to the magnet without anything.

Crazy how society has devolved into the fear of micro-scratches on a phone used everyday.
Scratches will happen, the only question is will you let it bug you?
100% case no question about it. This phone looks sexy, but it a huge fingerprint magnet, making it looking ugly. I went with the Otterbox Strada, it feels so good in the hand to unlcok the phone with fingerprint scanner & flip the cover open. Or just to flip the cover around back and use it with out. Also protects the screen from minor scratches that could happen in pocket, which is what i really love about it, no need for tempered glass.

I'm in a similar situation. I use a magnetic mount in the car, but on my current G3, I have the metal plate between the layers of a Spigen Slim-Armor case. I want to do the same when I get my S8+ later today, but I also want to be able to easily utilize the wireless charging feature. What I settled on is the Spigen Slim-Armor CS case with the credit card holder on the back. Slightly thicker, but I can stick the metal plate to the back of the door that slides open to cover the cards. Close it to use the magnet mount in the car, slide it open to charge wirelessly. We'll see this weekend if it will work like that or not.
Oh, and the CS version of the case was less than 1/2 the price of the standard slim-armor. ($16 vs $35).
No case, every. It's like buying a new car and wrapping it up in cotton wool!

Thanks. I'd already done that search and originally only the first one showed up with the metal ring in the back for mounting in magnetic holders. If I could find a magnetic holder that had a suction attachment I might consider that but the only car holders of that type all seem to have 'sticky' holders that no doubt would not take to repeated removal; something I have to do due to having to drive different cars.
I see the rugged one is now there as well. I'm tempted by that as I've had a Spigen case for years though the size of it on an already sizeable phone might be a little too much.

I use these in my vehicles2 Packs) Phone Mount, Mpow Air Vent Magnetic Phone Holder Grip Magic Mobile Phone Car Cradle Universal Car Mount for iPhone 7 6 6 Plus 5 Nexus 7 Samsung S7 S6 Note 5 4 Huawei P9 and other Smartphones https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01K6IE7J0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pFfDBbDZTH3NJ.
Just slip the metal piece between your phone and the case without peeling off the adhesive, and it will work perfectly well. Makes it very easy to take your phone on and off with a solid hold without coming off your AC vent. Thank me later :highfive:

That looks solid. I like the ones I sent because they fit thick and thin vents (just turn them to see). You take them in and out of cars and travel easily. If it's a vent that moves, I put one in one corner and the second in the opposite corner, so it prevents the vent from moving. I understand the difference of vents as you stated. Two usually fixes the issue. I like your suction cup one too, though, as long as the size doesn't bug you. They make ball/socket vent magnets too (gives greater flexibility and rotation).
Do you recommend good flip case for this phone?

The case itself is OK, just a standard TPU case though the metal piece on the back for attaching to a magnetic car holder provide a very weak bond that does not hold the phone. Fortunately I bought this holder here.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Dash...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
This comes with 2 extra magnetic plates, one circular and one rectangular. These offer excellent grip strenght and I glued the circular one to the back over the metal plate and it now works very well.
Eventually as more cases for the Max3 emerge I will get another case and glue the plate to that as I'm not totally happy with the height of the raised back.
The car holder is excellent though and good value for money, with great suction strength and very sturdy.
