5Ghz Wifi low speed issue on all roms i've tested - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've got an issue with the 5Ghz wifi on the 1+1. The Wi-Fi speed on 5Ghz is really low (0Mbps during the speed test). I've tested it on different roms.
The only solution I found to solve the problem and get a good speed is to go back on cm12 and install franco's kernel r43.
I would like to know if anybody knows if it's possible to extract r43 Wi-Fi drivers and make them compatible with cm12.1 nightlies?
Thanks for your help!

To be honest that is the first thing I hear about that. I have used multiple roms and always get good speeds.
Just did a quick test to a nas on my 5GHz network (Asus RTN-66U and a Linksys 6500) . 50MB file at around 8 to 12MB/s (megabyte not megabit!) which is more than fast enough.
I would try a different router if I were you.
Btw a good Asus router makes a difference compared to cheap stuff, not only in speed but also range.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply but I'm sure that the issue is due to the roms kernel. I have tested a lot of roms (sultanxda caf cm12.1 & 13, cm12.1 nightlies with stock and ak kernel etc...) and always the same issue : during the speed test (with the speedtest app from playstore) on my 5Ghz network the speed is really high at the start of the test (80Mbps) and then it decrease to really low speed (0Mbps).
I use my provider's box (Bbox Miami) and got a ftth connexion (1Gb) and as I said on my previous post the only solution to get a decent speed is to go back to cm12 and flash franco kernel r43.
With franco kernel r43 I get :
85Mbps DOWN and 92Mbps DOWN
Any help?

Then why can I just upload and download my 4K recordings constantly at max speed via airdroid or es-explorer? I am talking about a couple of hundred of MB clips.
My ISP speedtest via speedtest.net or the app is more or likely always maxed out at 100Mbps download, just did that test again. So for the money I would just get a different AP or router and use that. I haven't really seen anyone else complain. Just try it at a friends place or so.
I've seen plenty of crap wifi routers, both wifi and hardwired. The Bbox 2 which we had here in Belgium from an ISP was famous for being full of wifi bugs, unstable, disconnecting etc.
I also have a router here which does not give out an ip to an old laptop. (haven't wiresharked yet) but with all others it does.

I'm agree with you but why should I buy a new router? I'm on cm12 with kernel franco at the moment and it works perfectly 85Mbps down and 92Mbps up.
Maybe the stock cm12, 12.1 and 13 OPO's wifi drivers are not compatible with my ISP Box but I just want to know if it's possible to extract the wifi drivers from franco's kernel and use them with on cm12.1 or 13.

I'm om sultans latest 5.1.1 rom and I don't have the slow WiFi speeds you are having. With the speedtest.net app from Google play I get 185 Mbps down and 20Mbps up from my 200/20 connection on 5GHz. (Router 2m./ 6,5 feet away).
Maybe you can try to change your WiFi region code in advanced settings under WiFi if you haven't tried thuis already.

I've used these ROMs and my 5GHz AP lets the speedtest app max the connection, 55/5 nearly every time.
Whoa. Actually I just pulled 88.5/6.25 on a speedtest with my Asus RT-AC68U

No problem for me on sultan caf 340.

[Q] WiFi reception difference between ROM's

Hello,
I'm using Senseless Extreme with good WiFi reception.
I have flashed HyperSensation-CM7.1-v0.7 and found out that WiFi reception become very very weak in the same settings.
Is there any chance to find out the difference in between those ROMs and tweak the Sensation CM7 to get better WiFi reception?
Thanks in advance.

i would assume that's depend on wifi driver - can it be ported over?
persiansown: sorry, i have not tried your rom yet.
some devs improve their wifi drivers for better range and whatnot. cm7 isnt fully stable and its devs havent put those things in yet. try Cdtdroids roms. he does em great!

the module for the broadcom wifi chip is in sense stock ROM, as well as firmware and fine tune parameters.
seems like on CM kernels there is no tweaks on that level, and for me that's kinda unusual (on my gentoo box it's a usual routine to build my own specific kernel)
or well, I have not tried Cdtdroid's roms so will give it a try
thanks

How are you quantifying Good and Very Weak ? If it's just the WIFI bars you need to realise that they have NO direct correlation with the actual signal.
It's easy to spoof perceived signal strength based on the bars shown.
Do the different ROMs you mention actually perform differently ?
There is a way to see what the RSSI value is, can't remember where it is in the settings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_signal_strength_indication
The difference is in ability to connect to the router from a next room, on one - I can comfortably browse, on another - I can not even connect to the AP.

Ahh, OK a real world issue. Hmm that's concerning.
Hmm, more digging needed. GL and I'll keep an eye out for any useful info.
Thanks a lot.
Drop me a PM if you need some testing.
I would love to see bare minimal ROM.
I think most of the sense roms have some improved wifi drivers over the CM/ASOP based ones.
MIUI-110280 build good reception
I am toying with MIUI ROM and the wifi reception is similar to SenslessExtreme and there is CM kernel.
so i think it's matter of the firmware and settings for broadcom wifi chip

Poor WIfi speeds with CM7.2

Hmmm, I'm in a bit of tough spot.
My Wifi speeds are horrible on a CM7.2 ROM. I'm using a custom rom (from cm forum) that someone built to solve the bad bluetooth headset profile that was regressed into the cm7.2 release. I need cm7.2 cause its' bluetooth also supports HID. Unfortunately, wifi speeds suck in this rom. I can't remember whether the cm7.2 stable had poor wifi speeds.
Does anyone recall what this wifi problem was, and how to fix it?
Thx,
rickbol

You could use smanager ads or pro along with v6 supercharger ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 ). There is a 3g and wifi hack in that script.

It's actually in the 3G TurboCharger script, but it is on the thread you linked to.
Thanks, I'm reviewing those scripts.
Additional info... I disabled N support on my AP and my wifi throughput increased from 300-1000 kbs to a consistent 3000-4000 kbs. So that's alot better. But, CM7.2 wifi consistently shows a ~10DBm sensitivity deficit compared to another phone sitting next to it. Also, the Evo Shift stock ROMs sensitivity was more on order with this other phone. So I don't know if the sensitivity deficit is a bug, or part of the power\battery management.
I'm new to CM7.x, so I don't know how I can best test these thing. If I plug the phone in, does it automatically run in "Performance" mode for all features?
The issue I'm facing is I'm trying to use GrooveIP (VoIP) over Google Voice. I was having issues with this phone, and I beleive they were related to the wifi performance.
Any other suggestions for testing or debugging?

As I continue to investigate this wifi issue, I discover that this CM7.2 has no tiwlan*.ini anywhere on the system. Other "slow wifi" reports mention using a CM6.x tiwlan.ini to fix CM7.2 wifi issues.
Can anyone confirm that a CM7.2 ROM should have tiwlan.ini? Where is it? The only file in /etc/wifi, /system/etc/wifi on this machine\rom is wpa_supplicant.conf.
What I'm really looking for is a ROM that: supports all the standard evo shift hardware stuff (inlcluding wimax), plus, bluetooth HID. It be great if it also improved on battery life.
Any contenders\suggestions?
Thx,

I don't know if you have any options with all those on the Shift.
If you are having trouble with CM7 not working well enough for you then stick with a STOCK based sense rom, every asop GB rom is based around the work done on CM7.

I would suggest strapped365's 2.77.651.8 [Rooted Stock-O.T.A] Rom, or Chad The Pathfinder's Stock Mod [SENSE 2.1 | 2.3.4]. There are quite a few others, these are just two of the latest that are quite stable .
Thanks for the ROM suggestions. I actually have the StockMod as my Sense rom for when I have to update Profile and PRL (I recently switched to Ting... so far, so good).
I've been able to poke around a bit down in linux on CM7. I'm suspecting the bcm4329.ko driver has some config wrong in it, but I don't know how to t-shoot settings really. Since the sensitivity is down by ~-10dBm, but otherwise working, I almost think misconfigured antennas or something. "iwconfig eth0" often reports relatively high "Noise level" and some "Tx excessive retries" although I don't have lots of 2.4GHz equipment competing for the spectrum (afaik).
Regarding the linux layer in Android, do both CM and Sense use pretty much the same implementations with regards to (wifi) hardware, or do they use different "management" interfaces? I guess CM is the one that departs most from "stock", but I don't yet have a feel for whether these departures are mostly in the Android layer, or whether they go deep under the hood into the kernel.
This "low-sensitivity wifi" issue is a widely reported issue thru all makes of phones and versions of (at least) CM, but I have yet to come across any positive diagnosis of the source of the issue (although, given the reports, I suspect a common cause). My hunt continues. Seems all the later dev of CM forgoes wimax functionality... and while wimax hasn't proved to be widely available, it does exist in my area, and 3G is so saturated that it's worth trying wimax when available.
Thanks for the help,
rickbol

Slow WiFi on my OPO

Hey guys,
Just noticed today that my wifi download speed is horrendous when I do tests on the speed test app. I'm constantly getting about 6mbps while other devices get well into 30mbps. Weird thing is, my upload speeds seem fine. Only the download is slow.
I'm running on stock 30O, with WiFi optimization off. I have tried another router, another device(s) so the problem seems to be my OPO.
This is really annoying! my LTE speed test is fine so it's just the WiFi speed.
I'm standing right next to the router with full reception and i'm still getting only 6mbps.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Are you using any custom ROMs? If you use a custom ROM, you can try changing the TCP algorithm to any other algorithm to see if it would be any different.
That was on Wireless-N on my ASUS N56U http://i.imgur.com/1dqSI3b.png

You need a custom kernel that has this functionality and then a kernel tweaker (such as Trickster), you can tweak around with the TCP and see if it does any changes. It did for me.
Franco Kernel has this functionality if u want to give it a try on various TCP algorithms. theres one named highspeed is which i used.

No idea, a lot of the custom kernels include newer commits from CM. So it'll be fixed by next OTA. By using custom ROMs/kernels, you get newer commits that fixes bugs, but at the same time, while you fix bugs, new ones appear.
But whats the fun in software that is not buggy?

Did you try going to Advanced Settings in WIFI settings? WIFI optimization is on by default to save battery, but it makes WIFI glitchy, especially with YouTube. I almost bought another router before I figured this out.

Terrible 2.4ghz WIFI speeds when bluetooth enabled

I've only been noticing this since 2 weeks, and I've found other threads on oneplus forums/reddit that have the same problem, but appearantly nobody knows a fix. When I have bluetooth enabled on my OPO the WIFI speeds on 2.4ghz go down to 100-200 kB/s max. 5Ghz seems to be unaffected, but I don't have that everywhere. I was using CM12.1 official when I first noticed it happening. When I turn off my bluetooth the wifi speed goes back to what it's supposed to be, but I have a Pebble so permanently disabling bluetooth isn't really an option for me... I've installed Sultanxda's [ROM+KERNEL][5.1.1] Unofficial CyanogenMod 12.1 with CAF 3.4.0 kernel [Oct. 11, 2015] today but the problem persisted. I then tried the newest AK CAF kernel but again to no avail. What else could I try? Or has anyone found a fix by now?
Thanks for your time!

Internet Speed in wifi and 4g

Hi all,
I am very happy with my mi4c overall. I have one concern since I hav it though: the internet speed.
For example, when I download something from the playstore, I have download speeds smaller than 1 Mo/s. Same thing happens in 4G. And while browsing the internet, I feel that the speed isn't that great either. Also downloading files from the internet takes a lot of times with an equivalent speed (so not only playstore).
It is weird because with the same wifi connection on my tab, I have speeds around 5 Mo/s while downloading in the playstore or better.
Even weirder, when I run a speed test with the phone, I do have a fast internet connection (more than 50Mbps).
Am I the only one ? Would you have a solution ? Do you think it is ROM related and it will improve later ?
Mi4C 3/32 on latest MIUI 7 by Xiaomi.eu 5.10.16
The Playstore download is a bit sluggish but it's still okay probably around 60%~ of my usual speed
Other than that I have no internet problems whatsoever
I think you should better use an app like Speedtest.net to benchmark your Wifi or 4G speed.

Exactly what I did. That is why it ia strange to me.
Looking at other forums, it looks like the problem is only in playstore even though I felt large files, downloaded with chrome for example, also suffered this problem. But I might be wrong for the last one (it could be bad servers for example)
Have a read here, maybe there is a solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301753&page=2

me too , I tried everything without results
me too, with the china version 7.0.7 with speedtest in 5GHz 256Mbps max with 300Mb and a asus ac87u router, and now with the 5.10.22 only 110Mbps, is a modem issue in this version?
any clue?!?! this is not very good...
Hi! me and a friend of mine have the same problem! we had done a post on miui forum (http://en.miui.com/thread-175385-1-1.html) in order to advise the team of this bug and we hope that will be fixed.
Another member of miui forum installs cm 12.1 and discovers that ther is no bug of speed connection with that!
Does anyone install the miui7 stable and verify if download's bug is gone?
Global stable is not avail for mi4c........
so... no solution to this one? i heard that the unofficial build of cyanogenmod doesn't have this problem - so it's definitely a software/driver issue!
that should be solvable?! i already tried different suggestions without having any positive effect (disabling ipv6 on my router, disabling ipv6 on the mi4c...) still slow. but it's slow in downloading everywhere... whereas my sony z3 tablet or my ipad get maxxed out dl-rates ... but the mi4c is extremely slow in downloading.
using xiaomi.eu 5.10.22
I heard that all modders deleted stock "xunlei" app - thats a point.
I think we just need to wait official multilang stable firmware.
I've flashed miui, cm and mokee roms and noticed that play store downloads is only slow in miui rom
Best if you bring the attention to this forum http://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/5-10-29-30.28909/page-7

on CM12.1 it's like 9-10 mb/s. so rom related problem

False, other xiaomi devices (eg. mi note pro and mi note 3g) with the same xiaomi.eu (latest developer) version don't experience this problem. They also don't have xunlei engine.
I had same problem on my Mi4C, my download speed was 400 ko/s max.
I searched on all forums why it was so slow, it was really boring, and i found the solution.
I activated Xunlei, and then i was able to download at max speed, around 4 Mo/s (both download manager and Playstore).
I'm on MIUI France ROM, and they didnt delete Xunlei.
It seems if you dont activate Xunlei, there is a software limit in download speed.
It's not a driver issue because if you use another download manager, that you can find on Playstore or XDA, you can download at full speed.
