Hello,
I'm using Senseless Extreme with good WiFi reception.
I have flashed HyperSensation-CM7.1-v0.7 and found out that WiFi reception become very very weak in the same settings.
Is there any chance to find out the difference in between those ROMs and tweak the Sensation CM7 to get better WiFi reception?
Thanks in advance.

i would assume that's depend on wifi driver - can it be ported over?
persiansown: sorry, i have not tried your rom yet.
some devs improve their wifi drivers for better range and whatnot. cm7 isnt fully stable and its devs havent put those things in yet. try Cdtdroids roms. he does em great!

the module for the broadcom wifi chip is in sense stock ROM, as well as firmware and fine tune parameters.
seems like on CM kernels there is no tweaks on that level, and for me that's kinda unusual (on my gentoo box it's a usual routine to build my own specific kernel)
or well, I have not tried Cdtdroid's roms so will give it a try
thanks

How are you quantifying Good and Very Weak ? If it's just the WIFI bars you need to realise that they have NO direct correlation with the actual signal.
It's easy to spoof perceived signal strength based on the bars shown.
Do the different ROMs you mention actually perform differently ?
There is a way to see what the RSSI value is, can't remember where it is in the settings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_signal_strength_indication
The difference is in ability to connect to the router from a next room, on one - I can comfortably browse, on another - I can not even connect to the AP.

Ahh, OK a real world issue. Hmm that's concerning.
Hmm, more digging needed. GL and I'll keep an eye out for any useful info.
Thanks a lot.
Drop me a PM if you need some testing.
I would love to see bare minimal ROM.
I think most of the sense roms have some improved wifi drivers over the CM/ASOP based ones.
MIUI-110280 build good reception
I am toying with MIUI ROM and the wifi reception is similar to SenslessExtreme and there is CM kernel.
so i think it's matter of the firmware and settings for broadcom wifi chip

Anyone have a sense of how battery life is on this yet?
Also, does pinch zoom work on more sites? (One thing that is great about Sense browsers is you can zoom in on almost any web content...)
Thanks.
it drains about 10% an hour on mid usage, probably wont last you a day.
the browser is absolutely phenomenal, loving it! however if you are looking to flash kwiboo's version im having some random data disconnects, nothing major, just a heads up.
hope that helps
Battery seems okay. Feels like I've been toying around with ICS all day just checking everything out like the new People app and updated GMail, Messaging and Music. Also played some games. And I'm only down to 85%.
Battery life seems on par with Gingerbread (Oxygen) that I was using before the switch so I'm happy with that. Surprising too considering it's working with a hacked 2.6 kernel.
The browser works beautifully. GPU acceleration is a true gift from the gods, and pretty much the one thing I was really waiting for with ICS. Pinch to zoom works on all sites I've tried.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium.
No noticeable drain from the SDK port as of right now.
Will test throughout a few days to see if it's on par with Gingerbread.
Wow, sounds good.
I may have to pick up another Nexus on Craigslist.
What is not working? (4g, WiFi? anything else?)
Also, does the install change the kernel? Does it change the radio?
(fyi: I used to use james bond and netarchy kernels, and battery life was good enough...)
@hyakuman: in terms of pinch zoom: does text repaginate, or does it just go off the sides of the screen so it's impossible to read without scrolling?

Wifi is working actually, but signal bars don't show.
4g not working, USB storage mount not working, video recording not working, something else and maybe hardware acceleration not fully working.. and well some apps need update for ICS compatibility, but that's not the fault of the rom.
All in all it's very good for a first release.

Crap.. it can be used as a daily.. have installed the kwiboo release. No drain, AT least nearly bugfree 4 me. Great work anyway. With v1 I had glados Kernel, v2 Stock but dunno which Kernel next..

thanks guys. Anyone else want to chime in on battery life?
to my experience, battery life seems to have improved from GB, using kwiboo's ROM and now testing on Koush's... over wifi, cant say the same on 3g though. will test it out...

seriously asking people not to flash this? Care to elaborate on why you would say such things? Look everyone's phones are different and I will just give my experience and let others choose to flash or not. I have ran every possible ics rom or port I could get my hands on from beezy's, kwiboo's, morpheus, and the very latest which is a port of koush's crespo version now on 4g. I have had the most sucess with kwiboo v2 4g after the flashing of the eri fix. Used it all day at work probably 11 hours on battery(franco kernel oc'd) with moderate to heavy use including youtube(on wifi) during lunch. Flashed the koush port an hour ago(clean install) all is well(camcorder works) TB restored all of my apps with a quick settings change(app processing>interactive) hope this answers a few questions.

I would say that the battery life is good if you flash another kernel as well. I'm currently testing Glados kernel with Brainmaster's tweaked ICS v4.
Browser is really good. Web pages load really quickly. zoom can be a little sketchy on sites with only desktop pages.
okay, now I am looking for a used nexus on craigslist
hey guys, currently im on ordroid 6.1.0
faux kernel
sometimes my wifi or data will restart
does it have someting to do with radio??
which radio can i use for this rom?
I'm pretty sure it's a known bug. Your radio version usually only determines signal and strength depending on your area. It might even effect battery life, but I'm not certain about this.

my wifi signal strength isnt that strong too. so for this problem is radio problem?
It very well could be. Not a lot of ICS radios though. I've also seen a thread that compares the Sensation's reception to other phones - it wasn't that good.
Sorry about grammer, posted from phone.

Hey all,
I have a very fun and exciting cell phone now thanks to rooting my phone and installing the Virtuous Inquisition ROM on my phone.
However, now that I've done all that, I've got the itch to do more to my phone. I really like VI as a ROM, but is there anything else I can do to my phone?
Thanks!
Flash hypernonsense, it's like VI but with the remaining few bugs fixed, better battery life (with stock kernel) and a later ICS build. Make sure you have firmware 3.33 to avoid reboots.

I've been tempted to flash hypernonsense too, as its basically like an updated VI. How is firmware 3.33, do you have any wifi signal issues and if so where are you based? Its the only thing holding me back, as I've seen people saying that their wifi is affected after upgrading to 3.33.

I'm in the UK, 3G signal strength is improved and wifi is no different than it was in VI - it all works perfectly including tethering.
The biggest improvement is battery life - over 1d 16hrs, with 5 to 7hrs screen on time is the norm now (using the Anker 1900).

Thanks, im also in the UK, so might just give this a shot. Just biding my time for a fully stable CM10 release as it doesnt seem to far away now, so will feed my flashing needs for now. Also been looking at the Anker battery, looks good value for a tenner. On the stock battery on VI, I'm getting around 20-24hr(+) with 3-3.5 hrs screen on time.

Does this rom have any bugs that stop you using it on a daily basis?
I'm experiencing a GPS issue with CM9.1 so may need an alternative but I'm not keen on sense anymore so want to stick with the whole stock android look/feel.
Really like the way CM9 works in comparison to CM7, it may just be the change over from gingerbread to ICS but its awesome.

So you think this could be one of the closest roms to CM9? In terms of user interface and features?
(Sorry for the noob questions, I've only ever used 2 roms. CM7 and CM9!)

I have no idea, never installed either of those. I aim for a lightweight ROM with maximum battery life as I need the phone for what it can do, rather than eyecandy and features I don't use.
It's as close to an AOSP ROM that has everything working, if that helps.
Hmmm, I'm in a bit of tough spot.
My Wifi speeds are horrible on a CM7.2 ROM. I'm using a custom rom (from cm forum) that someone built to solve the bad bluetooth headset profile that was regressed into the cm7.2 release. I need cm7.2 cause its' bluetooth also supports HID. Unfortunately, wifi speeds suck in this rom. I can't remember whether the cm7.2 stable had poor wifi speeds.
Does anyone recall what this wifi problem was, and how to fix it?
Thx,
rickbol

You could use smanager ads or pro along with v6 supercharger ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 ). There is a 3g and wifi hack in that script.

It's actually in the 3G TurboCharger script, but it is on the thread you linked to.
Thanks, I'm reviewing those scripts.
Additional info... I disabled N support on my AP and my wifi throughput increased from 300-1000 kbs to a consistent 3000-4000 kbs. So that's alot better. But, CM7.2 wifi consistently shows a ~10DBm sensitivity deficit compared to another phone sitting next to it. Also, the Evo Shift stock ROMs sensitivity was more on order with this other phone. So I don't know if the sensitivity deficit is a bug, or part of the power\battery management.
I'm new to CM7.x, so I don't know how I can best test these thing. If I plug the phone in, does it automatically run in "Performance" mode for all features?
The issue I'm facing is I'm trying to use GrooveIP (VoIP) over Google Voice. I was having issues with this phone, and I beleive they were related to the wifi performance.
Any other suggestions for testing or debugging?
rickbol
As I continue to investigate this wifi issue, I discover that this CM7.2 has no tiwlan*.ini anywhere on the system. Other "slow wifi" reports mention using a CM6.x tiwlan.ini to fix CM7.2 wifi issues.
Can anyone confirm that a CM7.2 ROM should have tiwlan.ini? Where is it? The only file in /etc/wifi, /system/etc/wifi on this machine\rom is wpa_supplicant.conf.
What I'm really looking for is a ROM that: supports all the standard evo shift hardware stuff (inlcluding wimax), plus, bluetooth HID. It be great if it also improved on battery life.
Any contenders\suggestions?
Thx,

I don't know if you have any options with all those on the Shift.
If you are having trouble with CM7 not working well enough for you then stick with a STOCK based sense rom, every asop GB rom is based around the work done on CM7.

I would suggest strapped365's 2.77.651.8 [Rooted Stock-O.T.A] Rom, or Chad The Pathfinder's Stock Mod [SENSE 2.1 | 2.3.4]. There are quite a few others, these are just two of the latest that are quite stable .
Thanks for the ROM suggestions. I actually have the StockMod as my Sense rom for when I have to update Profile and PRL (I recently switched to Ting... so far, so good).
I've been able to poke around a bit down in linux on CM7. I'm suspecting the bcm4329.ko driver has some config wrong in it, but I don't know how to t-shoot settings really. Since the sensitivity is down by ~-10dBm, but otherwise working, I almost think misconfigured antennas or something. "iwconfig eth0" often reports relatively high "Noise level" and some "Tx excessive retries" although I don't have lots of 2.4GHz equipment competing for the spectrum (afaik).
Regarding the linux layer in Android, do both CM and Sense use pretty much the same implementations with regards to (wifi) hardware, or do they use different "management" interfaces? I guess CM is the one that departs most from "stock", but I don't yet have a feel for whether these departures are mostly in the Android layer, or whether they go deep under the hood into the kernel.
This "low-sensitivity wifi" issue is a widely reported issue thru all makes of phones and versions of (at least) CM, but I have yet to come across any positive diagnosis of the source of the issue (although, given the reports, I suspect a common cause). My hunt continues. Seems all the later dev of CM forgoes wimax functionality... and while wimax hasn't proved to be widely available, it does exist in my area, and 3G is so saturated that it's worth trying wimax when available.
Thanks for the help,
rickbol
Hey guys,
Just noticed today that my wifi download speed is horrendous when I do tests on the speed test app. I'm constantly getting about 6mbps while other devices get well into 30mbps. Weird thing is, my upload speeds seem fine. Only the download is slow.
I'm running on stock 30O, with WiFi optimization off. I have tried another router, another device(s) so the problem seems to be my OPO.
This is really annoying! my LTE speed test is fine so it's just the WiFi speed.
I'm standing right next to the router with full reception and i'm still getting only 6mbps.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Are you using any custom ROMs? If you use a custom ROM, you can try changing the TCP algorithm to any other algorithm to see if it would be any different.

You need a custom kernel that has this functionality and then a kernel tweaker (such as Trickster), you can tweak around with the TCP and see if it does any changes. It did for me.
Franco Kernel has this functionality if u want to give it a try on various TCP algorithms. theres one named highspeed is which i used.

No idea, a lot of the custom kernels include newer commits from CM. So it'll be fixed by next OTA. By using custom ROMs/kernels, you get newer commits that fixes bugs, but at the same time, while you fix bugs, new ones appear.
But whats the fun in software that is not buggy?

Did you try going to Advanced Settings in WIFI settings? WIFI optimization is on by default to save battery, but it makes WIFI glitchy, especially with YouTube. I almost bought another router before I figured this out.
