I have been locked into contracts forever and am finally in a couple of months out of contract and plan on purchasing a phone out of contract. I have had mixed experiences with rooting my phones and the ROMs for different models. With my next purchase I would like to pick a phone from a manufacturer that is easy to create stable ROMs and wanted your guys input.
One of the phones I had success with in the past was the original motorola droid and then moved to the xperia play which I couldnt do anything too without paying someone to unlock it, which I never did. I currently have the galaxy s and it seems ok for ROMs, though I read a G+ post from one of the XDA developers that stated samsung was difficult to work with and what they release for code and was a big pain to create ROMs from. He mentioned that Sony mobile was getting much better, but in the past I've leared to loathe Sony. At any rate what manufacturers are currently good to look at for root/romable phones? Also any thoughts on specific phones would be nice to look through.
Currently on my list is the nexus using walmarts sim cards, but am not opposed to looking at almost anything with any vendor. Unfortunately Tmobiles not in my area, because that seems like a good place for plans.
Thank you
I'm basically researching what phones will be easily rootable and will/have ROMs and is also a fully featured phone so I can use all the new tech that has come out lately. Thank you

Try something like Xperia Sola or GO but if you have a little more money buy Xperia Z ...Theese phones are good to customize as I have been trying and almost everything works...include custom kernels etc.
I have now Xperia Sola and I have set up new custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227059 currently waiting for V4 update but V3 works like a charm on it...no lags .. free to customize really good one. Maybe some HTC One will be good but I am fan of Sony
I disagree

I think the Sony Xperia Sola would be a poor choice, he is thinking about the nexus which is high end compared to the Sola, besides, the Sola is a pain to root (personal experience) while the nexus would by far be the most moddable and developer friendly device....

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been out for a very short period of time, and it already has root methods and custom ROMs, if you go for Samsung you won't be dissappointed...just choose your ROM carefully...starting out with the basic cyanogenMod is great....
BTW the Nexus is an awesome device!
P.S: Youtube would be your friend on how various devices can be customised
This is the sort of thing I'm nervous about http://www.geek.com/android/att-will-sell-the-galaxy-s4-with-a-locked-bootloader-1553657/
My old Xperia play had a locked bootloader.
Is there a place to look for best phones for putting mods on? it seems like such a crap shoot, I might decide on the S4 and then just by going through ATT I screw myself even though initially I think its just like the other vendors models.
-----
in reality I know my only safe choice is nexus, I just wish there was more out there.

Have you considered something not so mainstream like the Oppo find 5 ??
This is one great phone...see reviews and specs...
Also it has lots of development and capabilities...
BTW if the bootloader of the Samsung S4 is locked...developers will find various ways to unlock it....i don't think you should consider this also because of how the S4 is so popular...
Do your searches and studies...and i hope you make a good decision that you will be comfortable with....
I would be very interested in somthing like the oppo 5. Thanks for the heads up.
You really can't go wrong with the nexus.
The one is also available unlocked from htc.

Xperia M is getting android 4.3. Any news for Xperia L???
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...sony-xperia-m-preparing-for-imminent-release/
It's a good news Sony still remembers mid-rangers, But what about Xperia l??
That is only just testing first, if it pass, then sony will do the update, but if didn't, so it didn't...
Hope xperia l, m, and m dual will get at least 4.3

But I'm fearing Sony for not updating our phones, too, because our phones' key selling point are camera experiences, take for example, xperia play, all 2011 xperia's are getting ics, but even xperia mini getting ics, sony said ics will slow their phones and also even for gaming, so I fear that our phones are for camera, so they will not give us the update
Hope I'm wrong

Sony has great misconception that our phone is their camera expertise in a smartphone..
Hope they've understood their mistake from response from customers..
Regarding ICS update for 2011 Xperia series.. It is because the heaviness of 4.0 compared to 2.3 Sony said that it will slow down their devices..
4.3 and 4.2 have a very small amount of difference.. And it won't slow down our phone ..
Maybe Sony is thinking of directly updating our phone to Kitkat as there is no major difference between 4.2 and 4.3..

Yeah mine are the same views, about a direct KitKat update.
Its also logical, I will explain......
For Xperia M, this might be a last update! Yeah I am telling right, it is bit more towards the lower end and so like the previous low end phones getting 4.1 as last update, it might see only till Android 4.3.(Although Kitkat is supported by low end devices but Sony will be busy with its large range of products on update list)
And Xperia L on bit towards mid range that makes it sure that atleast 4.4 will be a last update, as the device has been getting just bug fixes to 4.2 from last 5-6 months,
if Sony gives 4.3 it will take time and may(if it does) give 4.4 update late and might cause XL to go out of standard 18 month update window,
so not willing to make XL customers unhappy, they are more likely to update to 4.4 directly.
All this are just assumptions so take with a pinch of salt
P.S - And BTW I have been contacting Sony Developer World devs directly and I showed my concern regarding all this matters and they are surely looking towards solving these issues positively.
Not confirmation but they atleast gave me assurance that they will look into a direct 4.4 update for XL.
Thanks for reading.

That is kind of logical explanation.. :good:
Many months on and still no significant update for this supposed 'mid range' handset with an aggressive carrier bootloader lock policy. I am so utterly disgusted by Sony for dropping all support for this handset early that I will never buy a Sony handset again. Its no wonder they only ever report losses when they offer this quality of service.

What? Its not news, its fact. No 4.4 is insulting, no 4.3, which the Xperia M has and is a virtually identical handset, is disgusting. Aggressive carrier boot loader lock means users who purchased through carriers can't even update the software themselves. As such, there is little to no active development team here beyond a few loyal enthusiasts. Compare that with the Samsung series phones, which all have complex active communities, this phone is dead. No real updates, no support. Released April 2013, release, dump, move on and screw anybody who bought the thing. The xperia L could have been the definitive mid-range handset, but instead they have treated it like dirt. And what did Sony, in their infinite wisdom give us? AOSP sources with broken bluetooth and GPS. Geewiz, thanks Sony.
My Mother-in-laws carrier purchased Samsung S3 mini is smoothly running KitKat,
My Old phone, a 1st generation ZTE blade released the end of 2010 still has an active CM11 maintainer.
thats how insane this situation is.
Yeah, you're saying right.. We have only one major update.. from 4.1 to 4.2. They released broken AOSP source. Okay, our great developer Varun.chitre15 and other devs fixed it. But what about people with locked bootloader? Anyway, I think for many users this will be last smartphone from Sony.

Even Sony Xperia E1, a phone with a 1,2 GHz dual core processor yet only 512 MBs of RAM is running 4.3 and according to their website (at least in my country), there's a Kit Kat update planned for it. Why can the E1 handle 4.3 (and possibly 4.4 too) and the L not? Because of a slightly faster processor? I don't even know what their excuses are anymore

I read somewhere that sony said how xperia L wasn't strong enough to support kitkat roms.
LOL in their faces.
No comment....
Other then slick design they really have nothing else to offer for their mid range devices.
Its a shame.....and dissapointment.
We won't be getting kitkat update for xperia L.....its final.
I know that Sony have not been the best at updating their mid range devices but if you look on the bright side; the people who can unlock their bootloaders have official cm thanks to varun. Also there is amazing development going on for our device. But the people who can't unlock their bootloaders, they have every right to complain. I am just sharing my opinion. Thanks.

Sony should at least bring 4.3 (same as the M)
There is new rule in this life
" never buy Sony phone if the phone doesn't have good developers "
Sony update all z phones to KitKat and SP with them
That's mean one thing
Sony only care in money
They only care update expensive phones to make people buy them
i think sony developers team in the company must be changed
Thanks

Agreed with that...:good:
Xda Dev r best.that's way we have stable kitkat.
We all have the right to complain when the almost same specced and even lower end device Xperia M gets a 4.3 update, while we're stuck with a version still full of the bugs that still hasn't been fixed. A very capable phone, but they are all too busy with the flagships and the new sh*tty new mid-range devices that doesn't really differentiate them from other OEMs.
to win money to buy a new phone, do not expect updates from Sony
Hi
I'm looking for a new phone.
I thought about buying the Z2 and Z3. Their was no major diffrence between those. Is the Z3 worth? Any info if anyone have it, tested it or just any insider info.
Thanks

Depends what you want, Z3 will probably get updates earlier knowing Sony but thats it. If I were you I would get the Z2 as I'm presuming a custom ROM will be put on the phone? If so then updates don't matter but as far as I can see they are the self and same device except the Z2s battery is 100mAh larger.
You know what, Z4 will come in 2015.. I'll wait for it first if I were you.
sorry for the nooby question, but everytime i check xperia z5's Android development page, there's nothing new. no custom roms, few custom recovery, and few kernel. is it because Z5 is hard to make a custom rom? or because of no developer uses xperia z5? sorry for my bad english.
It's probably becuase since the Xperia Z5 is still a new phone, it isn't needed to make a custom ROMS or there is no use for it (Since the Z5 is still up-to-date) + it takes a long to make Custom ROMS. Idk but I'm just guessing.
Well you can follow the cyanogenmod development here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/general/dev-cyanogenmod-sony-xperia-z5-t3302622
The main developer said that he'll be getting a Z5 compact soon, which will help with development.

The z3+ got 'no' development at all LOL. But still if u go for a rooted stock rom, plenty of customization u can made of.
It could be also that MM is behind the corner and until it's released, developing is a bit harder. Sure Lollipop attempts have been made and the ones I've tried, look to be working fine.
What I'm hoping to see is a Cyanogenmod ROM for this phone. After using CM for the past 5 years with my phones, it's hard to get used to the stock features and the lack of CM features altogether. Xposed helps a bit, but I still don't like the Sony apps and I often tend to disable them. Of course the problem becomes that it may cause some problems with the phone software stability.
I think it also comes down to phone price. I mean how can you encourage devs to pay upwards from 500 dollars/euros for a phone that they don't get to enjoy much and instead do free development on them for others. Whereas there are cheaper 300 dollar/euro phones that have far more people to try them and therefore giving a better possibility to make a name for yourself. But then again, this is what keeps the XDA community alive. You have people turning into developers all the time when they see a need for something they want, see no one doing it for them and decide to pick it up themselves
at least i wanna see that Z5 have custom roms based on CM
