I bought a z5 premium knowing it atleast supports 4g on T-mobile in the USA. Does anyone know if I can get LTE, or a radio I can flash to take advantage of LTE?
I did search and see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/general/z5-hand-tmo-t3218674/page1
TMO user claims LTE but I have my APN settings in and I do not see LTE, only 4G. I'm not sure what to do next
4G == LTE, you are running an international firmware (likely UK) where LTE is branded as such. If you want LTE to show, then flash another, I recommend the CE5, which you can find somewhere around here..

Ah, fantastic. I was hoping it was something simple like that. Thank you.
If you have the Z5 premium though, may want to head to the section for the Z5 premium, to ensure you get the right firmware.

T-Mobile should show LTE. Go into your settings > more > internet settings (download settings for internet and MMS) and it should pull up the right APNs and show LTE. My AT&T and T-Mobile both show LTE.

Where did you buy your phone? If you bought it in the UK/EU, did you flash anything new to it? Phones bought there should show 4G for LTE regardness of APN and other settings because those regions don't differentiate between the two (there wasn't that "3.5G as 4G" marketing push in those regions).

I bought my Z5 Dual from eBay, I believe it had the HK firmware.

Hmm this is interesting. I bought mine from Amazon so I'm not sure how to tell which region it came from. It shipped from China. I did not root or flash anything yet.
I also have a Z5 on T-Mobile (phone came from Taiwan). I am ON LTE, but the phone shows 4G as expected. This is totally normal as others have said.
Same here I bought my Z5 on amazon it came from HK, phone shows 4g, but when running speedstest I get over 30mbps download, you can also install the LTE Discovery APP, mine shows that I am always connected to LTE band 4 mostly, sometimes it switches to LTE Band 2 or 12

LTE = 4G in other areas the world. US Telecom screwed with the term,s since they termed HSDPA/+ as 4G, when it was 3.5G. So they had to resort to using LTE instead of 4G like the rest of the world.
That's why on international phones you see H/+ = HSDPA (meaning it's on 4G if US phones), and when it actually shows 4G, it's on LTE.

Are you on TMo US? I haven't seen my phone switch to band 12 yet, despite being in a band 12 area and getting relatively bad (~1 bar) band 4 service at my desk (which is next to a window lol) at work.

No, I understand the nomenclature. I'm saying its weird that some phones are showing 4G and some are showing LTE in the US. The Z5 is not officially released here in the US so I'm wondering where the firmware difference lies from the international versions.
It doesn't matter where you are geographically. It's down to the customization of the software the device is running and there are several. I have a Z5 that is branded Vodafone from Germany and it shows 4G. Normal for Sony phones. If a user is particular about what icon shows for LTE, any European, UK, Baltic, Mediterranean etc. will show 4G. Any North, Central or South American firmware will show LTE.

My box/phone was unbranded and when booted showed chinese/HK as primary language but shows LTE as shown above.
Again, it is a condition of customization. Possibly there are Asian variants that use LTE in lieu of 4G. Check customization in the service menu. I have had almost every Xperia since the X1 eight years ago, prior to LTE being available. This question/discussion comes up in every forum. In my opinion, the notification symbol does not matter as long as the data speeds are there.

I don't think you're understanding my curiosity. I know that its related to the customization and the firmware and/or branding based on the carrier. I don't care about the speeds either since I am getting LTE speeds. What I am curious about is why it does show because it was a Chinese market phone which per my knowledge usually shows 4G. Most markets show 4G, I want to know why mine shows LTE.

I am currently in Japan with my htc inspire and I am not getting any signal at all. I tried resetting and going into the settings menu to change the "network operator" but its greyed out.
does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I desperately need it to work here and I have the international plan activated on my account.

Well in Japan you wont get 3g due to Japan using 2100mhz and The Inspire does not have that freq built in. You should get a call signal. Make sure you enable international roaming on your account. Or if your phone is unlocked buy a local sim card and pop it in.
I enabled international roaming on my account and have the $6 plan added for cheaper international roaming service.
I don't need 3g, just a phone signal to make calls and receive texts. but all I get is a "x |on top.
I have travelled to countless countries with my other unlocked phones and have never had a problem with my phone not picking up a signal.
is it possible that because I changed to a 3g sim card, it doesn't work abroad?
japan does not have gsm EDGE coverage i dont believe. they do have 3G HSDPA, but on 2100mHz, which the inspire does not have. so you are kinda out of luck i'm afraid.
Verified with AT&T's tool here
http://www.wireless.att.com/travelguide/coverage/roaming/step1.jsp
The Inspire doesn't get voice or data in Japan
Had the same problem in Korea last week - sucked big time. How can they call it a world phone and leave out 2100!!!!
That is absolutely terrible and false advertising since Japan and Korea re left out which are huge territories. I also have an unlocked samsung vibrant that I need to charge to see if it works.
Does anyone know if the vibrant has the right frequencies for Japan?

According to the same tool I previously posted, the Captivate will work in Japan and South Korea
Edit: Oh, Vibrant... hold on
Don't know about the Vibrant, does it have the 2100 frequency? If so, then probably yes
Yeah I still can't believe this phone left out the 2100 frequency. I posted about this a few weeks ago and still can't believe I didn't notice that it didn't have the 2100 when I bought it, as I travel to Japan quite often.
I don't like the Atrix and the Infuse 4G isn't out yet so I'm just waiting it out until some better phones come out and will just use a older phone in the interim. Those both support 2100 apparently. Kind of ridiculous that HTC left it out of this phone.
Just did a quick search and it looks like the Vibrant does have 2100 UMTS support.
Sprint CDMA works in Tokyo (and possibly Verizon). Not sure what carrier it uses but it does work for voice only. Probably not much help though.
We switched from Sprint to AIO. I got the Nexus 5 and the wife got a Moto G. My wife is getting around 2 mbps down at best and it says 3g. I'm concerned it's just normal HSPA and not HSPA+. Is there a way to tell which it's on? For the record, when I turn LTE off on my nexus, I hit the data cap of 3.5-4 mbps on HSPA+.

Depending on which model you purchased, your Moto G may or may not support HSPA or HSPA+. If you purchase the unlocked USA GSM model, it does have HSPA+. If you bought the global model, it's strictly 3G only.

.... thats a bunch of misinformation. All the models have HSPA+. The US models only show 3G on screen even when connected to HSPA+ (if you dont believe me there are several ways to check). With AIO either of the US models or the international models will work just fine (as it runs on ATT's network) the only time you really need to worry about network compatibility is if you are buying the phone to run on T-Mobile as you will need the US model instead of the Global model.

no worries. There seems to be a ton of confusion out there about this phone and which model to use. Motorola should add a chart or something on their site to clear it all up.
Just checked mine there now hspa+ and downloads of between 3.5 and 5 Mbps in my house ,other days I can get up to 9 Mbps,UK stock ROM rooted on giffgaff network,Posted screenshots of speeds that I get in my bathroom which are usually poor compared to rest of house
Recently, I got a AT10 version of mate 8, 64GB/4GB version.
Now I'm using EMUI 4.0, got an update when I first launch the phone (Android version 6.0)
No unlocking bootloader, no rooting.
And I'm using AT&T in Texas.
So far I never saw 4G/4G+/LTE on my phone.
Sometimes H/H+, sometimes just 3G.
The highest download/upload rate I could get is around 7.5MB (in H+)
If it shows 3G, 1.5MB only.
Anyone knows what's going on?
Any solution?
Thanks in advance!
Check what 4g bands your network privoder offer in your country. In uk for my provider is 800 and 1800 but I now have 4g and for next 2 hours no 4g. Maybe signal coverage is bad. You see 4g on switcher should be enable
According to this information, it should work.
As gimbu said, try to check 4G option.
Till yesterday I have 4g rare. Now I have from 24hours all of time after switch off phone and switch on with power button and vol down key. I dont know if exactly it helps but it working now
Thanks a lot for your help.
I live in Texas, USA. Definitely AT&T has LTE in this area, no problem with my old G2.
-------------
UPDATE: I went to an AT&T store yesterday, they helped me set up again, now I have 4G (App can recognize as LTE).
The download speed is around 11MB/s, upload for 7MB/s.
It seems AT&T staff made some mistakes when porting my number from my old phone to my new Mate 8.
Also some people mentioned about APN setting, that could be the error why I didn't have 4G and AT&T staff made mistakes.
Again thanks.

Maybe AT&T staff helped me turn it on already.

I imported the 8141 from Clove in the UK. So far, my only real issue is I have yet to see it connect to LTE. I've seen "4G" and "4G+", but no LTE...which is a problem because I can barely pick up a signal other than LTE in my area. I checked and confirmed it's using the correct APN (fast.t-mobile.com). I'm on the 110/unlimited/unlimited $30/month prepaid plan and confirmed I haven't hit the LTE cap. If I put the SIM back in my Moto X Pure/Play, it hops on LTE without a problem.
Everything I've read says the radio should support T-Mobile's frequencies. Is there another setting somewhere I need to change? Do I need to flash another region's stock ROM (and is that even possible yet)? Did I get a lemon? Do I need to hold it a certain way like whatever iPhone it was a couple years back?
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
4G+ is the UK's LTE as far as iconography is concerned. Have you done a speediest on 4G+?
I've noticed the same thing, but I (as mentioned above) thought that LTE and 4G+ were synonymous. I think the only reason to flash a region based image would be to enable radio bands that are disabled based on location (which may be in this case).
Works fine here. Lower Manhattan using same version.
4G is LTE in US.
Download LTE Discovery and you'll be able to see if it is connected to LTE or HSPA(+). Mine, also from Clove, is just fine with AT&T LTE.

4G is basically the same thing as LTE in this case. 4G includes WiMax and LTE. So when you see "4G" it means you're using LTE. The same goes with 4G+ - LTE-Advanced (LTE+).
I have LTE logo on my Z3 while Z5 Premium shows 4G while using the same network.
4G is LTE in europe. We did not have that silliness that some 3,5G was called 4g. Also there is no band limitations on XZ Premium.
For app to check which band of spectrum you are connected to, please use Cellmapper app (from my signature).
If you wish to see different icon in there, you could flash Customized DE firmware which has "LTE" icon. But this has only cosmetic effect.
Instead of making a new thread, anyone knows if VoLTE works with the XZ Premium for T-Mobile?
Currently no. You need region or operator specific image Flashed (oem.sin) but there is none for XZ Premium.
But there is hope as there is t-mobile us specific modem configuration in all region images.. which will be loaded when you have correct oem image Flashed.
Hi everyone,
I have an S8+ I bought abroad, when I use my Rogers sim I get 4G not LTE. However when I use the sim on my Priv, I get LTE. I am using the Rogers APN.
Is there anything I can try?
Thanks
What country code/model is the phone? It's just an icon - whether you see 4G or LTE icon all depends on the CSC the device came preset with.
The only potential issue is with the European models (G95XF / G95XFD) lacking band 30, which some carriers (like AT&T) use for Enhanced LTE. While Enhanced LTE does work, it doesn't support the full speed that comes with band 30.
Do a speed test. If your S8 and Priv report the same speed, don't think about it too much.
The phone I bought from Saudi Arabia. Model is SM-G955F.
I do get similar speeds.
Can I change the preset without rooting the phone?
Thanks again
Usually f models shows 4g icon rather than the LTE icon.....so you are perfectly fine
Signal icons are usually csc dependant... you can see what csc is on the phone and search online to see which csc has the icons

Middle Eastern phones like the one you bought don't show 'LTE', they show 4G in the status bar, but to confirm you can open the dialer and dial *#0011# and see LTE-BASIC Info, like what LTE Band your phone is using and other detailed information about the cellular connection.
