not getting a signal abroad - HTC Inspire 4G

I am currently in Japan with my htc inspire and I am not getting any signal at all. I tried resetting and going into the settings menu to change the "network operator" but its greyed out.
does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I desperately need it to work here and I have the international plan activated on my account.

Well in Japan you wont get 3g due to Japan using 2100mhz and The Inspire does not have that freq built in. You should get a call signal. Make sure you enable international roaming on your account. Or if your phone is unlocked buy a local sim card and pop it in.

I enabled international roaming on my account and have the $6 plan added for cheaper international roaming service.
I don't need 3g, just a phone signal to make calls and receive texts. but all I get is a "x |on top.
I have travelled to countless countries with my other unlocked phones and have never had a problem with my phone not picking up a signal.
is it possible that because I changed to a 3g sim card, it doesn't work abroad?

japan does not have gsm EDGE coverage i dont believe. they do have 3G HSDPA, but on 2100mHz, which the inspire does not have. so you are kinda out of luck i'm afraid.

Verified with AT&T's tool here

The Inspire doesn't get voice or data in Japan

Had the same problem in Korea last week - sucked big time. How can they call it a world phone and leave out 2100!!!!

That is absolutely terrible and false advertising since Japan and Korea re left out which are huge territories. I also have an unlocked samsung vibrant that I need to charge to see if it works.
Does anyone know if the vibrant has the right frequencies for Japan?

According to the same tool I previously posted, the Captivate will work in Japan and South Korea
Edit: Oh, Vibrant... hold on
Don't know about the Vibrant, does it have the 2100 frequency? If so, then probably yes

Yeah I still can't believe this phone left out the 2100 frequency. I posted about this a few weeks ago and still can't believe I didn't notice that it didn't have the 2100 when I bought it, as I travel to Japan quite often.
I don't like the Atrix and the Infuse 4G isn't out yet so I'm just waiting it out until some better phones come out and will just use a older phone in the interim. Those both support 2100 apparently. Kind of ridiculous that HTC left it out of this phone.
Just did a quick search and it looks like the Vibrant does have 2100 UMTS support.
Sprint CDMA works in Tokyo (and possibly Verizon). Not sure what carrier it uses but it does work for voice only. Probably not much help though.

Telus cdma + rogers gsm

I'm trying out a new TP2-CDMA from Telus (Canada) and this is by far the best system I could ever try in my case. I've always been a GSM user (since 1994) mostly because it gives you the latitude of using what ever device you want just by inserting your SIM card. so I got the Phone Inserted my Rogers SIM in it and it got me on the Rogers network right away I then activated the phone on the Telus network and it is also working fine... of course...
But the best thing is that I set it on "Global" network and it stays on GSM (Rogers), and when I get to an area where there is no GSM signal it switches by it self to the CDMA (Telus) network!!! this is amazing! NO MORE DEAD SPOTS! Of course you need to have two Service contract from two different service provider, but if you absolutely need to get service in areas where your current provider does not offer any, well it sure beats the hell out of having two different cellphone in your pocket... I have set my main cell number to transfer to the other on "No Answer after X # rings" and I get all my calls no mater what network I'm on!
The only down side to this TP2-CDMA Unit is that Telus got rid of a bunch of stuff that is in the TP2-GSM... like the GPS for instance... Well I guess you can't have it all...
I got Bing to work... so there is a GPS.... but Google Maps won't work...
Just thought I'd share my joy...
there is a telus gps registry fix on pccgeeks.
GPS works... i have google maps, tomtom7, and bing running fine, but sometimes, getting a lock can take very long
still new to winmo, so not too much going on with the phone, but am learning =b
zedex26, you are right!! there is a GPS!
The only thing is that I can't make Google Maps to work... it instals but when starting it it keeps on saying Loading... and never opens.
Anyway now were talking!! it has almost everything I was used to... But NO "Camera Flash" not that it was so usefull as camera flash but as a "FlashLite" it was...

inspireqc,
I finally got GM to work... Don't know why but the device needed to be on the CDMA network in order for the program to load... because on the GSM network, the program does not even load... it keeps on saying "Loding" and I could not even access the program... It's like it does not see the data connection...
Anyway There are other maping SW that work very well on both network on that particular device.

I've found that I have to manually switch the data connection in order to use Google Maps when I switch between GSM and CDMA. It does work w/ both, however it's much better when I'm on Telus b/c this TP2 can't use Rogers 3G network. Keeping my fingers crossed for when they finally crack this baby open and hopefully find that the North American 3G freqs are there.

Did you have to sim-unlock your phone first?
My friend looked up the technical specs of our chipset and they do support North American HSPA but it is not available, either by a hardware or firmware\software lock.
WOW
GSM and CDMA both work... that's fantastic.
Does this mean that it hold 2 different SIM cards? Or is the CDMA part devoid of a SIM card?
Would it be possible to use a GSM SIM card from any provider around the world and reconfiure the CDMA part to work with any CDMA network around the world?

well i would think it would be a radio issue have the same with mine. use it strict on rogers. i also looked up a little but the tp2 telus is 800 and 1900mhz hspa and rogers system is 850 and 1900mhz hspa so the frequency may be a issue as well.
anyone know how to fix the caller id name problem while on gsm?

after reading up if you want 3g on rogers network you need a tilt 2 do to the fact rogers uses umts/wcdma 850/1900 mhz sprint is 900/1900 BUT the edge network will work on your sprint phone to rogers other then that it is it. rogers is doing alot of work on their 3g network and i think most of the fido network is 1900 mhz and rogers is 850mhz 3g but i think personally it may work in the future but not gonna be anytime soon. The 3g should work on telus and bell and might on fido ill have to see my friend and try it out. but i know for sure right now it dont work with rogers.
thank again, I do not have any FIDO preference, I assume coverage with Telus or Bell are about the same.So just walk the TP2 to the TELUS or Bell store and it is done?

Telus Milestone problem with 3G

Hi,
I just bought a Telus Milestone while in Canada las week, I bought it from a Best Buy store in Toronto.
I live in Costa Rica and we use 850mhz 3G band but for some reason is not picking up 3G band only GSM with EDGE data connection.
I already try the "WCDMA only" option but still not working it goes out of service.
Is there anything different in Telus 3G network that could be not compatible here?. All of the iPhones 3G and 3GS work here with no problems, same as some other ATT phones.
According to the FCC my phone supports 850mhz 3G band.
Behind the battery it says: FCC IHDP56KC5
And according to FCC documentation it supports WCDMA 850/1900/2100 plus HSDPA 10.2 mbps
So, I don't know what's going on...
Hope somebody can help me, I heard there is a Field Test hidden option on the phone that can show some troubleshooting information, but I don't know how to access it.
Thanks for the help,
Luis
Planning to buy one too, so it'd be handy to know what's going on there. I take it you bought it unlocked? Also, is the APN and all that setup correctly? How do you have it setup, is it one of the new 3G phone lines or an old GSM one (which are capable of 3G as well)?
I have the exact same problem down in Mexico, I just received an unlocked Telus Milestone and all I get is edge. I am using the same APN configuration that I have on my Rogers Dream (G1) and I do get 3G on that one.
Also, I believe this forums are for HTC phones only, I'm not sure we'll get lots of help here on a Moto issue.
Mine does work on HSPA+ here on Telus.
Just a hypothesis would be: Since it has only been released on HSDPA/HSPA+ network in Canada, they haven't done proper testing on 3G mode and there is a bug in 3G only mode.
Like I said, I can't say for sure since the only other GSM network we have here is rogers which is mixed 3G and HSPA+.
On second thought, I do have a Fido/Rogers SIM lying around so I'll give it a shot over the weekend and let you guys know.
Thanks Ady, it does sound like a compatibility issue. I have tried Telcel, I should be able to try ATT in the US next week.
Other than the 3G issue, this phone very darn nice... way faster than the dream, Multitouch work's great ont the browser.
yeah, its really good.
Update: I gave fido a try and it seems to be working, but on HSPA.
I bought it locked to Telus, and got the unlock code from "UnlockMotoDroid"
My SIM card is one of the old GSM ones, but I already try the new 3G SIM Cards (kolby3g) and same problem, only EDGE data connection. APN and all that is correct.
pasker17, I'll love to hear if you find a solution. Keep me posted.
Ady, agree with you, other than the 3G issue, this phone is pretty awesome..!!! Hope I can find a fix soon. I'm wondering if this could be related to the HSPA+ advanced technology that might not be compatible here, but as far as I know it should be backwards compatible with any other 3G technology.
And also, I heard people is using it with AT&T no problems, 3G data speed. Do they have HSPA+ ?
Thanks for your help guys
AllI can tell you guys is ther eis something diffrent with Radio signal we are using here ( Canada ) and the one in South America, I been tryin to use Latam f/w on my stone and no signal aty all whatsoever , so th eother way around doesnt work , they must be something we are missing about network compatibility , 1 thing I am sure Telus 's 3g network is the new HSPA .
double post sry .
DAG,
Yes, maybe there is some sort of advanced HSPA+ network in Canada, and that might be the reason is not working in some other places.
But as far as I know, all those HSPA+ flavors, should be backwards compatible.
Now I wish Motorola frees the bootloeader and I can try it with some other custom ROM.

That wouldn't be it. If you the iPhone works in Costa Rica the Milestone should work.
Have you called ICE? From the very brief info I can find on how to get the iPhone to work in Costa Rica it almost appears that ICE itself has to approved the devices on its network. Apparently they have approved the iPhone. I assume they'd do it via IMEI

Yes and no, you do need to provide an IMEI to get your data plan working, but it should work with any device. I did it when I had a 3GS and have used my SIM on other phones and 3G works normally when setting my old apn. This is indeed bizarre
I called ICE, and went to their offices. Milestone is not
in the "approved list" so they won't even take a look. Same with the iPhones they work fine but are not "approved".
They already got my Milestone's IMEI registered on the system.
At the end they told me that this could be a software incompatibility but since the phone is not "in the approve list" there is nothing else to do or test for them.
Since this phone for sure supports 850mhz 3g band, I'm starting to think that it could be a software thing.
I'll be in the US in a couple of week and will try to test it on ATT, I heard a lot of people are using Canadian Milestone there with full 3G speeds

I've tested GSM Sim Cards (green and pink) and kolbi3g SIM cards, all of them with data enabled, not of them works with 3G data speed only EDGE.

OK then, if you've tested with apn:icecelular for the old GSM ones, and kolbi3g for the new ones, then I guess it's something specific to the phone, but this is extremely strange. :S

US TMO Sensation, 3G internationally?

Does anyone know for certain whether the US Sensation will operate at 3G internationally? I know it's got the 2100 frequency, but it appears that the phone may only connect in 4G or 2G mode. If I get a local SIM in France or Italy, for example, will it operate at 3G data speed, like my Vibrant does?
Has anyone actually verified this on the ground in Europe?
Thanks.
It'll do 3G. Tmobile's 4G is actually 3G/HSPA+, but thanks to their wonderful marketing, they started using the 4G name to get ahead of AT&T.

Yeah, I understand the marketing overhype in the naming, but I've seen a bunch of posts that seem to indicate the phone is either operating in 4G or 2G mode. I happen to live in a weak 4G/3G location, and all I've seen on the phone display is 4G or 2G. Is the 4G icon being displayed when it's really connecting 3G? Has anyone seen a 3G icon on this phone?
I called both TMO and HTC tech support but neither one could answer this question with certainty.
I may be over worrying, but I really don't want to get to Italy later this year and be stuck with EDGE the whole trip.
It's got the 2100 frequency for WCDMA, so you should be fine in europe.

Some of us are under the impression that Tmobile locked it to the 4G icon on the phone. They did the same with some other phones. When root is achieved & you are able to swap out the icons you'll probably see a difference.

Using Tmobile G2x in Italy

We will probably be moving to Italy next year, if everything goes right. I was wondering if I could use my unlocked G2x with a carrier in italy and everything work...meaning, voice, txt, and data (and by data, i mean 3g type data not EDGE). anyone have any experience or know if this would work. also, my wife has a MyTouch 4g...same questions apply for that phone too. thanks for your help.
Welcome to the beauty of GSM phones. Alongs they are unlocked voice/text should be fine once you slap in your new carriers sim card.
For data/mms to be correct you would have to do some APN editing but if your on a custom ROM they have alot of Euro APN settings installed already and you just pick the one your on. If not then you have to find the settings and edit it manually on your rooted phone.
A side from that you must choose a carrier that runs on the same frequency bands that tmobile uses, but i'm sure that shouldn't be a problem though.
Unlike CDMA phones all of the carriers information is on the SIM card which allows you to move over your old phone to another GSM carrier because your paying for the Carriers Service not the eletronic device your using.
Most, if not all, the carriers in Europe use 2100 (Band I) for 3G/4G service. The G2X P999 supports Band I (2100Mhz) service. So you will be able to use your phone, if unlocked, and you will most likely get 3G/4G service. Enjoy the pasta and the pizza.
Ahhh thats soooo cool. Me and my G2x are actually leaving Jan 31- Feb 29 for Italy as well. I just ordered a sim from Telestial so I am hoping that at least I get edge, as I will be traveling throughout Italy hopefully France and Croatia.
Please post your results as to how things go, if your there before I am.

[Q] stuck on 2g...wont go 3g...why?

So I I've searched for an answer or a problem similar only to come out with no luck...do what's going on right now is that I got my inspire unlocked from att and came to India because I now have to live here because in going to college here..anyway its unlocked and I purchased a prepaid plan from company Vodafone.
So I've been running with 2g for some time now and now I just sick off it and need 3g so I can also use mylaptop and connect to hotspot. Anyway I've got 3g plan however my phone is constantly staying on EDGE....which is pretty annoying because its so slow and I paid a bit to get 3g upgrade. I've tried the *%*#4636#*#* phone setting and switched to GSM/cdma auto. Also got the smsc and updated. Also I set up a new APN suited for the company with no luck..still on 2B.C. So my question is..how do you switch on 3g on inspire? Haven't been able to find that also been searching it. My Android is still 2.2.1 if that makes any difference. I've also called they company and HTC to no success...so please help me out. How do I initiate 3g on my inspire?
apparently I just need the option to turn on 3g and the phone info thing won't work...keeps me on edge.
Thanks
If you have tried going to your settings then to you mobile network settings. There should be an option to use only 2g networks. If that is checked, then you need to uncheck that.

But that's the problem...I can't find that option.I go into mobile network settings and see data roaming...apn..network operators..and always on mobile network option. I've been trying o find a option to set which to put..for instance 3g only or 2 g only or 3g preferred..no avail. still have Droid 2.2.1 if that makes any difference..
Their is no way to get 3g. India uses a different frequency for 3g. No way to change it outside of getting a different phone with compatible bands
The Inspire radio utilizes the 850/1900 3G bands. India uses the 900/1800 bands for 3G. If you use the phone in a market where the 3G is on a different frequency than the radio in the phone, the best you'll get is Edge. This is hardware related. There is no setting you can change or ROM you can flash that will allow it to operate on 3G in your market.
So no absolute way of getting 3g on my inspire in India?
Nope
..........
Huh...so best bet would be to get a new phone? What should I look for in order for this problem not to happen again?
Get the correct version, The Desire HD.
Is it company -problem or a country -problem? If I switch providrs, will it work?

Doubt it. Pretty much everyone except the US uses 900/1800, and att uses 850/1900 on it's phones (the inspire) - as previously stated this is in the phones hardware. So unless you can find a provider that uses 850/1900 for 3G your SOL - best bet is to get a new phone (DHD uses 900/1800 for 3G and is the same device as the Inspire, very minor differences)
Even i too have the same problem and I am from India.I have tried with my network operators many times but nothing works,i have to pay for 3g data and use 2g.Is there no fix for this issue?
omg, SEARCH. its what you agreed to do before posting.
