Occasionally my Z5's touchscreen will fail to detect input at the top left corner of the screen..the only solution to fix it is to restart the phone or close all apps (but this latter solution doesn't seem to work all the time). What's interesting is that the issue will follow the orientation of the phone, so if I rotate it horizontally, the top-left region of the new screen orientation will fail to detect, and the old top-left region while the phone was vertical will detect touch again.
Sony has suggested I do a software repair through their companion program which I've done twice, but the issue still comes back. They told me at this point I'd have to send my phone to a repair center to have them look at it. I'm thinking about waiting for the Marshmallow 6.0 update before I really consider that..
** Edit **: It appears that Facebook's Messenger app is the definitive cause of this issue. When the issue occurs, force stopping the app will immediately fix the touchscreen issue. Another user has also shared this temporary solution below that I have confirmed works:
Temporary solution !
you can try this and I'm sure it would work ,, it's temporary but you still can use the facebook messenger

Thanks for the help. I ran all five service tests for the touchscreen, and there didn't appear to be an issue for the top-left region of the screen for any of them.
The times I noticed that I've run into the issue is when I am in the menu of some app opened (Settings, Google, Gmail, Email apps for example) that have a button at the top left to open Preferences/Options (looks like ≡ ), or an option to go back in which case it would be just a ← . When I would touch those buttons, nothing would happen. I have to restart the phone to have them work again.
I would wait till it happens again, then try service mode again.
This way you would find out if it's the touchscreen or some thing going wrong in the app.

I found my Z5 have the same issue. In additional when i rotate phone in any direction the issue will occur only top-left corner of that direction. even if tested in service mode the issue still occur until i restart it.

Sounds like a software issue if it rotates like that. Should be doable by Sony or a dev. No trekking when sony would fix it though.
Does sony have a bug report area on their website?

Okay good to know I am not alone. I just experienced it again and I can confirm that the top left corner malfunction will follow the screens orientation, so it is definitely a software issue. I don't know if Sony is aware of this
Does anyone know where to go about reporting this issue to Sony?
I reported issue to sony via e-mail. Sony replied e-mail that tell me to repair my phone's software with PC-Companion. but after i changed "preferred network type" from "LTE(preferred)/WCDMA/GSM" to "WCDMA(preferred)/GSM", updated some app and re-install some app like FB, Line, Messenger, the issue did not appear again. (In Thailand don't have 4G LTE)

I did the same thing and reported it to Sony. They also told me to repair my phone software with PC Companion. However, recently the issue just occurred again... I do not know what is the cause . I can only hope maybe Marshmellow 6.0 update will fix it..
i find that the send button in whatsapp always takes 2 - 3 tries. must be software related as well because it doesn't happen on other occasions.. just in whatsapp and that particular spot

I have already tried software repair twice now. The issue remains still :/
Sony said my option at this point is to send it in for repair evaluation.
Well another development on the issue guys.
If I place a finger anywhere on the screen besides the top-left region,
and then I place another finger on the top-left region, it will detect input again there.
But only while there is already another finger being held on the screen at another region...
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this lately or could possibly provide some help..
I have this issue too.
The screen is still active, for example, you can open Sketch and drag the pen over to the upper left corner and it will draw there.
But when you initiate a touch there it wont work, I tapped in the upper left corner a bunch and it revealed the tiny perfect square where there were no dots.
Came here to report the same issue. It's definitely software (and not hardware related).
You can enable developer options in the About phone settings.
Once enabled, you can turn on touch visibility and tracking.
Sure enough, taps register in the "dead" area of the screen. But the user interface doesn't respond.

I have Z5 E6633, facing the same problem, and I maybe closing on to what's causing this thing. just need to make sure if it's the dual version users only or what.
if so, then its caused by the dialer app bug. which happens when its supposed to bring you the choice between the 2 sims before dialing a no. and it needs to be tapped twice for that to happen
my guess is that the 1st screen just disapears but its the cause of the top left screen issue.

Yes, I experience this exactly as described. You may also notice that if you have a finger already pressed on a different region of the screen, and then you use another finger to tap on the top-left region, it will register.

Yes, same here. I have played around with developer options to try to get more insight into this issue. Can see the touch feedback circle on the top-left region, but the interface of whatever app you are in does not respond.

I don't have the dual version, but I know of other users with Dual that have experienced this issue. I have been posting on this issue on Sony's official forum as well; one of the members said it is caused by Facebook's Messenger app.
I deleted it while I was experiencing the issue and it fixed. But to make sure it is not a fluke I'll be reinstalling the app and will try deleting another app if the issue comes back.
i uninstall the Apps Facebook Messenger and it OK!
Someone please help me, i need Facebook Messenger.

I am having an odd issue with my Focus. The marketplace is stating that I have 2 updates to do (yesterday was one). When I click on the maketplace it opens up and at bottom of the screen states I have 2 update, but I am unable to click the words "2 updates" in order to install them. I can't even tell which programs they are for.
I am have a similar issues sending text messages. When I have the conversation up and type the text message, I am unable to hit the send button. I have found a work around for this... After I finish typing the message, I can click on the conversation itself and the keyboard goes away. With no keyboard showing I am able to click the send button (which is located in same location as if the keyboard was there).
Anyone heard of such an issue?

You also can't click the "6 updates" link?
Note that the current version of Marketplace has a bug that prevents you from installing updates for trial apps. However, that link should be clickable and the update process should be start normally; it only doesn't really update the trial apps.
rule no 1 for technology: if you find a weird bug, restart the device and see if it persists...
same here! i have 8 apps that just wont update. although i can press the update button they all look like they are updating but then they never do and im always left with 8. i suspect that this is because i have mainly trial version and i dont think these update, and of the free stuff that i have got all update ok!
if you want to update them, just uninstall them from the phone, then reinstall them again by finding it in the market place.

This would work, since at one time I had 3 updates to do and uninstalled many programs, and then the number changed to 1. But if you are unable to click the update button, you don't know which programs to update.
I had no trails on my phone.
for others that were having similar issues to mine, did you have the same texting issue?
yea it was more for davidebanks. have you tried restarting the phone? i think i had this at one point, and just turning the phone off and back on fixed it.

Having the same problem! really annoying!!! Was not how Nexus 4 was or any other phone I have used. There have been settings on some dialers of what to do after hanging up, like return to dialer, return to call log or home screen. None on this built apparently.

i had the exact same issue, or more precisely :
I receive or pass a call. then, instead of going to the "in call" screen with the big red "hang up" button, i'm back to the home screen...
now this can happen, if i press the home button, but i don't. And if that was that, then first i would have the small "phone" logo in the upper left notification telling me i'm currently in call, and the "in call" screen would be accessible from the task manager, however the task manager displays absolutely nothing.... just like i wasn't making any call at all, except i can hear the person on the other side in my speaker.
Then i click on the big blue phone logo to get to the dialer screen, but i then get a screen which i never had before, with a black transparent background, proposing me to either use the default keyboard (if i click it i get the keyboard), either to "return to current call", and when i click it, i'm back to the homescreen... so the only way to hang up is to shut the phone down...
it's happened to me twice yesterday, but never before....
PS: just so we might find a common app that would cause the issue, i have installed on my N5 these apps :
dashclock
file manager
prochain bus
ridiculous fishing
sygic
today calendar
vlc
and thats all. Any of you have some apps in common ?
I also had the same issue during the first week or so...but with tym and aftr update the issue vanished!! Since 2014 i nvr faced this issue again!!

Hi,
I am rooted running beanstalk. But before flashing had stock rom then Purity.
This problem happened after flashing Purity ROM.
When I make or receive a call, my screen goes blank and I cannot do,anything to wake the phone, unless the other party ends the call and then the screen may wake up if I touch the screen?!
Anyone else, please help.

Exact same issue here. No app in common... Did you manage to fix it ?
Fixed mine by turning off developer options and then rebooting
I'm noticing that during many of my calls, I apparently hit the HOLD button accidentally with my cheek. My proximity sensor seems to be working fine, and the screen does turn off appropriately when I hold the phone against my face. I'm assuming that at certain angles enough light gets through to the sensor to turn the screen on, and I accidentally hit the button in the corner. Anyone else have this issue? Is there any way to circumvent this? Thanks
Unfortunately i can't help but i am getting the same issue
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I tried applying different dialer apps and they only serve to change the dialer/contact screens, but the default calling screen containing the HOLD button remains unchanged. I found that using Skype as the default dialer fixes this issue since it uses its own dialing/calling screens, but obviously it's not practical to just rely on Skype. So the problem still remains unresolved.
As an update, someone on Reddit posted a download link to the Google dialer app here at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/themes-apps/app-google-dialer-t3323432
This installs a new dialer, which actually provides a new calling screen as well, fixing the main issue. The default dialer is better in my opinion since it opens up the dial pad immediately while this one doesn't, but this is a good option at this point

even worst than calls is when you press it while watching youtube vids, i wish there was a lock of some sort cuz the music stops paying all the sudden
It's embarrassing when I put my clients on hold and don't realise until they don't respond to me. The cheek hold doesn't result in any audible sound so you can be talking for 20 seconds with the other end on hold. I love the S7 edge but I'm contemplating sending it back. I'll try the Google dialer mentioned above first though
Same issue here. I talk on the phone almost 2 hours a day and this is happening at least 1-2 times in every call! Checked my proximity sensor and it's working as it should.
Any workarounds? Maybe someone can edit the phone.apk and remove this stupid button or disable it? I am against rooting but I will definitely root my phone if there's a fix for this.
Damn, I suffer exactly the same issue! Found this googling for ideas...
Very old thread, but I just wanted to give a suggestion to others with the same issue. I really love the Google Phone dialer app, which actually replaces the calling screen during calls with this app's own screen, so you no longer have the Hold button at such an unfortunate location. If you do choose Google's app, I recommend this specific version: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-phone/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-release/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-android-apk-download/
The caller-ID function by Google actually works with this version, whereas the other .apk files floating around do not have this function working properly.
I'm having the same issue and I've installed the Google phone, however as soon as I place the call, the existing on-screen options pop up.
The option to disable the default phone app is greyed out in settings, so unsure on how to resolve.

Finally searched for the answer to this today, after several accidental holds on work calls.
The solution above with Google Phone APK worked for me. I just went to SETTINGS - APPLICATIONS - DEFAULT APPLICATIONS and then under Calling App near the top, changed it from Contacts to Phone. . For some reason, I cannot open the phone app itself (gives an error message) but calls do use the phone app rather than Samsung stock dialer.
Turn off screen!! Most phones allow you to turn screen off without interrupting the call.
Same issue with a galaxy A5 2016
Can't understand why samsung doesn't fix it

Have you tried a restart yet? That will fix a lot of little issues you might be having.
Edit:
Also, have you disabled any packages with Package Disabler Pro or any other app?
Yep, tried the "soft reset" option: press and hold the “Power” and “Volume Down” buttons on the device for about 10 to 20 seconds. No change. I'm reluctant to do a Hard Reset (traveling) until I return home.
I had been using Package Disabler Pro with only a few things disabled. Figuring that it might have been the cause of the problem, I removed both the app and the engine. The the problem remains: no way to enable the rotation.
And you tried to go to the three for menu send change button order and see if it's on the bottom (disabled) and fresh it back to the top of it is?

I had this exact same issue with my old Note 5
Out of the box (In my case) my rotate icon was missing from Notification bar. I also had no root or any tweaks etc.
I spoke to Samsung rep and they told me to try some Samsung Galaxy fix from their app store. This app did not help (forgot the name)
If you Google this issue overall its a common issue
with Samsung's devices.
It was a big issue way back i think with S6 (not sure Google it)
I reflashed my stock Rom etc.. nothing helped.
Anyway what i did was, download an 3rd party
rotate widget app, from Play store and it worked 100%.
Rotate icon would show up in Notification bar..!
As soon as i uninstalled 3rd party app, icon dissappeared..! So i just kept the
3rd party rotate widget
Maybe to can try same ?
Bottom line,
this is an old Samsung bug that affects
only small percentage of their device.
Good luck

Figured as such, but never hurts to verify the basics.
I remember their was an issue with some devices (S6 era) dropping quick toggles. Maybe try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xpe.app.quicksettings.manager
Not sure how much it costs, I bought it for my S6 a long time ago. It won't open on my S8 but maybe something similar can be found?

For me it was a very annoying and frustrating
issue. If i switched off 3r party toggle.,
Icon would disappear etc.
So just keep widget out of sight

On my pixel 2 tap inputs occasionally don't register, I've had it happen in the android system menu, the android back/home buttons, chrome, etc. Is anyone else experiencing this?
My phone's basically on stock default settings, nothing unusual running. Not sure if it's only tap inputs getting dropped or the whole system locking up temporarily. Turning on "Show taps" in Developer options I can see there's no visual effect when a missed tap occurs.
Yes, this is me too exactly. Same thing with the dev option too. Not sure if I should wait for 8.1 or if it's hardware and RMA it. Frustrating because I like this phone.
I noticed this on my phone, clicking around in the settings and on the back and home buttons. I then did a factory reset (because of a separate issue where the location icon was always displaying in the notification area, even when not in use). After that the issue seems to have gone away. So it would seem to be software issue. I suggest trying a factory reset (though beware that this wipes everything on your device).
P.S. nonexistent, I'm impressed that you joined the XDA forums in Dec 2010 and never posted a comment until now. Of course, you might need to change your screen name to "existent," now that you're out in the open.
I have definitely noticed this as well, happy to know it wasn't just me

I tried a reset but the issue still showed up. In fact it happened twice on the first time setup stuff afterwards. I called Google and we went through the motions and reset it from recovery mode but it was still there when I was testing it the next couple hours. Anyway, we're doing the RMA thing. I'll let you guys know how it works out when I get my new phone.
Got my replacement and the problem still exists. It even happens just a couple screens into the initial setup after a factory reset from recovery mode.
I find that it occurs when I'm in a small room with the heat turned up. The sensitivity of the touch screen seems to depend a lot on moisture. If I keep my fingers moist (or wear a touch sensitive glove) it works a heck of a lot better.

That's good and bad news I guess, hopefully just needs a software update. I have a replacement coming Monday, but I kind of expect no improvement and that this is just a common thing that a lot of people aren't noticing
I noticed that for a while in Google Play Books, in which I tap the screen frequently to turn pages. I tried a factory reset, which didn't help. I tried running in safe mode and testing on Maps and still had a problem, although less frequently (a higher percentage of taps worked). Then it started to work better. We'll see if that lasts.
I tried flicking as opposed to tapping and flicking always works.
I'd suggest posting on the Pixel product forum or calling support, so that Google becomes more aware of the issue. There are some threads on the subject on reddit and the product forum.
Out of interest are you noticing it any particular parts of the screen?
I've noticed it a few times but it's been on areas of the screen near the edges.
I assumed it was some sort of palm rejection thing going on it the background with it thinking I'm accidently mashing the display.
With me it was the right edge toward the middle, as that's where you tap to turn the page in Play Books.
I get it on the back button frequently, but it happened just now in the middle of the screen when I typed the text input box to start writing this
I think this is the whole OS hanging/freezing briefly actually, not a touchscreen input issue
- Pressing the hardware unlock button can get ignored (both locking/unlocking)
- Scrolling from a quick flick + release can suddenly stop (no additional inputs)
So most likely this is a software issue, hopefully fixed in an upcoming update? It's kinda annoying
Did you change the DPI or font size? I go back to default and it seems that everything is good now.

update: no it happens again…

On my pixel 2 tap inputs occasionally don't register, I've had it happen in the android system menu, the android back/home buttons, chrome, etc. Is anyone else experiencing this?
My phone's basically on stock default settings, nothing unusual running. Not sure if it's only tap inputs getting dropped or the whole system locking up temporarily. Turning on "Show taps" in Developer options I can see there's no visual effect when a missed tap occurs.

can you be more specific? I just got Pixel 2 - black, 128GB (Canadian). I can touch and the UI responds well. But i want to test it out thoroughly..

I can trigger the system hang/"missed input" most reliably by visiting m.reddit in chrome (any thread w/ comments) and spamming tap on the [-] next to the username of any comment to collapse/expand the section. Turning on Show Taps from Developer Tools in the system menu I can see taps being ignored sometimes

So, I replicated what you told me, 3x. I didn't miss any taps, and no system hang/missed input..
hmm
Got my replacement and it has been much better so far. Still a few dropped inputs but I think those may be false positives because I am hyperfocused on it. Pretty sure I have always had to double click occasionally on all phones at various times.

Yeah, sometimes I see a tap register visually on the screen, but the intended action doesn't happen.

It's funny. I had the issue. Did a factory reset. Felt like it was better. But now that I'm thinking about it more I notice it a lot. So I can't tell if it's really different. Before I figured I'd made a mistake. Now I think it's the phone. Damn you phone!
Anyway, I notice that the issue tends to happen more or less randomly, at any position on the screen. Also, sometimes the same tap fails to register twice in a row, but once it's starts working all subsequent taps that come in a row work (say I'm clicking through a lot of menu items in some settings). So maybe that lends some credence to the idea that there is a system for registering the taps that is not waking up and once it does it works fine.
Perhaps related, I have my ambient display set to wake on double tap. Before the Nov update it hardly worked. Now it seems to be working reliably.
