[Completed] What can I do with stock att s5 - XDA Assist

I have a stock att SM-G900A S5 that is updated to 5.1.1 . From my understanding their is no root for this so far. So far I'm pleased with the update as its seems to be running a smoother and less loading time. For my taste there are absolutely to many irrelevant apps that I will never use. What can I do to get rid of some these and more importantly if I can do away with some of them, how will that affect my S5? I mainly use it at home as a Hotspot because I live in the swamps and our only option for Internet is satelite.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
If you're on LP then there is no Root method for this variant of the Galaxy S5

[Q] Backward compatibility to 4.3.2

I have tried 4.4.2 now for a few months now & absolutely HATE it. Also have been reading about 5.0.1 & i am sure I am not gonna like that either. On my old tmobile sgh-t999 Galaxy S3, I absolutely LOVED the rooted stock 4.3.2 running the stock touchwiz interface. Is there anyways possible to put that rooted 4.3.2 rom running the factory touchwiz UI on my Tmobile Note edge? ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated Thnx

Guys, thanks for the response. Unfortunately I am serious. Will wait for 5.0.1 to come out & give it a try, but really wanted to know if its possible to put 4.3.2 on the note edge if I dont like 5.0.1.
Thanks
I heard Gingerbread is super smooth
It is possible, however, you would have to find someone to create a Jelly Bean ROM for you...
I'm curious though as to why you'd even want that.
Kit Kat and Lollipop both outperform Jelly Bean, and that's without Touch Wiz. With Touch Wiz, that's a whole different ball game.
If you're looking for better performance, wouldn't an AOSP Lollipop ROM be better that a Jelly Bean Touch Wiz ROM?

Hi Beach_Head thanks for your response. I know a lot of people had issues with 4.3.2, but not me. I loved it. I loved it in my rooted S3 until Jan of this year when i upgraded to the EDGE. Feel like the ui changes in 4.4.2 (& just from reading about 5.0.1) were done just for the sake of changing. From changing the funtionality of the menu button to the email program within touchwiz. They all are horrible changes to me, making the functionalities more cumbersome than anything else.
Does my Edge reboot faster than my S3 yes, a whole 50 seconds faster. But cumbersome UI negates that perormance gain. My memeory usuage on the EDGE is also the same as my S3 around 80-90%. Further more i still have not seen a rooted stock rom running touchwiz (unfortunately, i happen to like it :/) so my EDGE, is still not rooted
Further more it has been freezing like crazy whenever i am in a chatting app like whatsapp or kik & am reading messages, when the screen turns off. If i try to bring the screen back on right away, the screen goes blank & the phone freezes. Only optio i have at that point is to take the batt out & restart the phone. The other option, when the screen turns off while reading, i have to wait atkeast 5-10 sec before tying to turn the screen back on. Either way VERY cumbersome
Anyways, after reading ur post looks like i am just gonna have to suck it up & wait for 5.0.1 update and hope its better than 4.4.2. Also hope some one posts a rooted version of the stock rom running touchwiz soon after. No other choice. Finally I am not sure what AOSP is or means.
My Edge isn't rooted either. But my problem is that I don't want to trip Knox.
I'm using a different model than yours (I don't think it should matter), but I have never experienced any of the bad experiences you've had. In fact, I don't recall any instance that my Edge has frozen. That is odd behavior. Especially if it happens frequently. Have you tried re-flashing it with the latest firmware to refresh it? That should fix it. Otherwise, if you still encounter those problems and your warranty allows it, you should have it exchanged as it could be a hardware issue.
Oh, and AOSP (Android Open Source Project) means, a pure Android build. No Touch Wiz or any other add-on feature or bloatware that gets attached by either a manufacturer or a carrier.

Hi Beach_Head,
Think i will try to factory reset the phone. Hopefully that solves the issue. But will get a hold of tmo as well if the problem continues after that. Do have 4 more questions for you:
1. If I go the AOSP way, can I then install individual touchwiz/smasung programs like the email client or printer service, keyboard, etc?
2. Also I know S3 with 4.3.2 had knox as well, however the root did not trip it. What is the advantage of having knox vs not having it, besides loosing the factory warranty?
3. If i do decide to root... do u know of a rooted stock rom (no custom roms) that is available for 4.4.2 or 5.0.1 for the tmo Edge? &
4. FINALLY (lol) have u found a work around for the ext SD card problem in unrooted 4.4.2?
Thank again for being patient with me
Hope all goes well...
To answer your questions:
1. I believe so.
2. Apart from losing warranty, there's no other reason. However, my company is adopting Knox, so I need it intact.
3. You may check here: T-Mobile Note Edge Android Development
4. I don't believe there is a solution that doesn't involve root.
BTW, are you sure you're on 4.4.2? My Edge is on 4.4.4 and I don't believe was ever on 4.4.2.

Root for 5.1.1

So yeah i updated to 5.1.1 on my sprint edge because ive been having performance issues and battery is god awful. But it still hasnt really change was wondering if there was any way at all to root, otherwise im ditching this unsupported phone.
Hello. When can one expect the 5.1.1 root?
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62988380&postcount=10

Root vs non-root

Hey XDA, I'm facing a bit of an issue....
I want to root my S6 because right now as it stands, the S6's volume quality is pretty average and unsatisfying. Also I want to install a debloated ROM (I understand debloating doesn't give back unused space) since the S6's bloat seems to be really slowing it down.
But on the other hand I'd like to keep the benefits that Samsung offers to users that haven't voided their Warranty (i.e. free battery replacement, OTA updates, software fixes,Samsung Pay - not in Australia yet - etc.).
I've rooted all my Android devices in the past; I rooted my Galaxy Note & S4 and never needed Samsung repair services besides that one time I nulled my IMEI on the S4....
So should I root my Galaxy S6?
NOTE: I've had the device for almost a week now.
The s6 is pretty good without root. I am hoping an exploit will be found like pingpong root until that happen I'll stick to stock and just use a browser with adblocker
I agree with "godutch " opinion. Same here I used to root all my previous Galaxies, however the s6 does a good job without root especially for the fact that you can uninstall most of the added apps and disable most others (Package disabler pro). Also with the latest 5.1.1 updates you got a better battery management.
But you can't enjoy root app and xposed pal
I've 7 months of warranty remaining but I've rooted my S6.

Unless you need to use a specific root app, S6 doesn't need to be rooted like previous galaxies S models did.

Fully agree with the opinions above. I've never run Sammy roms before, always custom roms and rooted. The S6 however has enough available tweaks to remove annoying items like theme's, apps etc even though one or two will remain. Keeping ota updates and hdr camera does it for me.

Agreed. I used to run aosp / cyanogen roms, then you loose hdr. I mainly used aosp/cm because I don't like the sammy theme (on top of the bloatware). So a trimmed down sammy rom didn't do it for me. Sammy fixed this with their theme engine. So for the first time ever I'm happy with a stock sammy rom with material dark added and lots of stuff disabled.

This is a really really useful and essential thread. I have my phone for 10 days and I'm not sure if I must root it or not. Mind that I've been using Chinese phones for years and of course they were all rooted. But I was too tired of searching for the best ROM so I think I'll stay stock until an exceptional ROM appears. I'd like to try stock OTA Marshmallow too

Why is this place so dead?

Usually a flagship worth an unlocked boot loader is full of development and such, but this Note 5 seems to have very little activity for such device.
Why is that?

Well, for me, I'm not seeing much reason to run any custom ROMs and I use Samsung Pay often. Also, there's no AOSP development because AOSP doesn't play well with Exynos.

This. It's the fact that it's an Exynos device. We've got plenty of TouchWiz based ROMs, which are totally fine for me, but the general attitude I see outside the Samsung forums is AOSP or GTFO.
I just got my Note 5 this past weekend. I upgrade from Note 4.
Yes I notice not much activities here at all.
Devs are waiting for MM to drop
Also we can flash all of the International Roms and Dr.Ketan's audio fix, so no need to port them.

Any international Rom is possible. I have literally flashed all of them and they all run just fine for me.

Flash the kernel for your variant: Arter or Skyhigh or even the Stock Rootable Kernel by Jovy.

well I have been buying, rooting and romming Samsung phones for the past four years and with the Note 5 the theme engine handles my theming needs, rooting means you can't use Samsung pay, which I use almost everyday and there are no custom roms because of the xynos processor. I have system wide ad blocking without root and don't want to root only for touchwiz Roms when the stock Samsung software is running so well, surprisingly.

I also want to know more about this system-wide ad blocking that doesn't require root.
I rooted my Note5 as soon as I got it, not knowing it would permanently disable my ability to use Samsung Pay. (Yep, I should have researched it, but didn't. Mea culpa.)
But the main reason I root is for AdAway -- if I had the same results without rooting, I'd have at least considered not rooting. Samsung Pay sounds pretty sweet. :\

I don't know anything about boosting the sound volume because I haven't looked or really felt the need. For the ad blocking I use this app.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/adguard-ad-blocker-doesnt-require-root-t2958895
If you just want ads in the browser blocked it's free. It works really well for me and even though it will show as using a lot of battery that is only due to the way the app works and handles data.

Thank u very much for the info
For system-wide ad blocking (I am not rooted) I use Adblock Plus. https://adblockplus.org/android-install
Go to the link at the bottom that says "Download Adblock Plus for Android"
Now what you have to do is make sure that Adblock Plus is never "optimized" and you don't ever kill it because it's running a localhost proxy (if you do, you lose internet until you start the app again.) You go into your APN settings and create a new APN that looks exactly like the one you already have, except that you use a proxy, localhost, on port 2020. Whenever you connect to Wifi, you use a proxy, localhost, 2020. It's not the best solution because it isn't invisible (it's always in your notifications otherwise Android can kill it to save memory) and you have to do the APN/WiFi changes as I just specified, but it's far less intrusive than ads all over the place.

Actually, I think one of the reasons there are not as many roms this time around is Samsung also had limited release of the Note 5 - it was originally internationally released in ASIA but not in Europe. I also think many of the major devs who normally are seen on the Flagship devices - didn't come along with the NOTE 5 because of BATTERY, No SD CARD, XYNOS and cost. Those four things kept many of the developers away (IMHO)
its a shame because it is a fabulous device despite those things. I will say that the Devs who did decide to join the Note 5 have done incredible work - there are some great roms out there. Just not as much variety. I also believe AOSP will eventually be done for the Note 5. There are several other examples of XyNOS phones and tablets getting AOSP - it is just a matter of time (and very hard work on the part of those who are working on it)
I'm not one to complain much but yeah I agree the Note 5 has been disappointing development wise i guess due to exynos. I might get the S7 as it's supposed to have snapdragon back which is supposed to be more developer friendly.

If you don't use a VPN on your device, Adguard is much easier. It makes a loop VPN and filters all traffic.
https://m.adguard.com/en/welcome.html
As for the topic at hand I'm not getting another Exynos device... I've been really upset by the lack of ROMs and Samsung hasn't exactly been great with updates either.
I just hope that the Snapdragon Kryo cores don't pose a developer issue...

Guide to root S5 from Lollipop to Marshmallow

Hi. First post and I have never rooted a phone before.
My S5 is a G900F on EE network.
It has an issue where after switching to wifi it cannot switch to mobile data without a restart hence I restart it about 3x a day. Every day. This appears to be an issue with EE on the S5.
The phone is unlocked and I'm not with the EE network for my calls.
I would like to get rid of any trace of EE but also would very much like the sound of marshmallow.
It sound like the touch wiz functionality Is useful so I would like to keep that.
So what are my options and is there a step by step guide to do this for newbies?
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
With the restarting issue try airplane mode on/off instead and see if that fixes it.
I'm also with EE on my S5 and as it is there is no Marshmallow Touchwiz for the S5 (apart from the one that'll be built probably tomorrow by the devs on here). You can use an S6 ported ROM themed like marshmallow however I have found they are fast at first but after long usage they seem to slow down a lot. You can get marshmallow via ROMs like CyanogenMod 13 which are crazy fast however that's based on stock Android and not TouchWiz. Rooting is a great idea as you can do just that (rid of all the EE branded stuff like Lookout, Amazon Appstore etc.) and also it doesn't require installing custom ROMs (however awesome custom ROMs are). Or you could install a debloated ROM (Generally makes your phone faster, declutters it).
Right now i'm running on stock 5.0 rooted until a stable 6.0.1 ROM is built, then I'll flash it to check it out.
Hope this helps
Edit: Also buddy you might want to have posted this in the Q/A section for future reference
Shaolin thanks for the reply.
The aeroplane mode on off works which is a bit less of a pita thanks.
Did you not find the cyanogen mod stable or did it slow down?
Any idea when a stable 6.01 will be released?
Any idea when 6.01 with touch wiz will be available?
Maybe it is better for me to wait for one of these also I'm concerned with 6.01 the sd card is integrated which is brilliant but sounds like it is difficult or impossible to get data off the card if I change the rom?
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
CyanogenMod is very stable however the cons for me are the lower camera quality (due to the fact it uses the Stock android api) and also the missing cool touchwiz features like air view and gestures
I'm running a 6.0.1 touchwiz build right now but it is harder to install than standard ROM due to the fact you must use ADB to replace your bootloader/system etc.
The 6.0.1 official update will probably start dripping out at the end of the month or its predicted for April think
In my opinion, just wait for the official 6.0.1 touchwiz build because this build I'm running now is the smoothest I've ever had my S5 (so it will probably be even better in official build)
Let me know if you'd like a link the to thread for 6.0.1 touchwiz for S5. If you do wanna install it early then I must urge you BE CAREFUL! Backup everything
