Hey everyone - first post here (hi!). My Nexus 6P is experiencing a major issue with three separate pairs of headphones with inline controls - basically, it seems to stop registering double-click-to-skip-track after the device enters 'sleep.' The functionality works perfectly when the device is awake, or (I think) kept awake by something running in the background (like a download - not sure about this part). However, I can perfectly reproduce an issue where, while the device is locked and the screen is off, the Nexus will stop registering double-click-to-skip-track on an inline remote after a certain interval. I CAN press the button once to pause/play, which I'm thinking is making the device 'wake up' in the background -- after that, it will begin registering double-click-to-skip-track actions again for a little bit. This is incredibly aggravating to me, since I'm a chronic song-skipper and prefer not using bluetooth headphones.
The headphones I've tested are:
- Sony 'Extra Bass' earbuds
- Official Project Fi 'branching' earbuds
- A store brand pair I'm surprised still works
... all of which worked perfectly with the Nexus 6. I've seen similar reports on /r/Nexus6P and on XDA about people having big issues with headphone and inline remote recognition, but this case in particular is interesting to me because it seems to span across headphone models.
So I'm curious, two questions really --
(1) Is anyone else able to reproduce this issue?
(2) Most importantly, if you're using a pair of in-ear headphones that absolutely do not experience this issue, what are they?!
Just saw your post. Same issue here, but have you had any luck with any headphones?
Just got my RMA in and tried a couple more pairs of headphones (including Beats) with both phones. No dice. I think it's a software issue - if there ARE headphones that work, they're not common...
my headphones do not work either. My xiaomi pistons made for Android will not even play audio on them. Worked fine on my nexus 5. My amazon premium earbuds however can play audio, but vol down button does not work. The vol up and pause seems to work though.
edit:
the amazon ones work if my screen is off, and only when its off.
Just a heads up, neither Google nor Huawei support are aware of any issues with inline buttons not working. I had to struggle to convince either party that there was an issue, and they continued to press me into (another) RMA. Definitely call and let them know.
I had a problem with Apple and Samsung headphones in-line remote.

Hi everyone. I just got an HTC One X on AT&T today from the store. Up until today I had owned an SIII also from AT&T. The music player on the SIII kept freezing and the auto correct wasn't working so I changed to the One X. I listen to music a lot on my phones so I expect the music player to be reliable. Anyway, the music player on the HTC One X is great, however, it's been skipping to the next track without my touching the screen before the current song is finished. I was questioning my sanity because I figured maybe I was bumping the screen, but the player just skipped to the next song a few minutes ago and my hand was nowhere near it. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way to eliminate it?
Naturally, this is somewhat discouraging as I've only had the phone for a matter of hours. A friend of mine is pressuring me to get an iPhone 5 (blasphemy!) and I'm actually considering getting one since android is clearly not cutting it at the moment. I understand there are other music players on the market but the simple reality of it is that I shouldn't have to download a 3rd party music app, plus, I actually like the stock app.
Thanks for reading!
EDIT: My library is all MP3 files, not an internet radio type thing if it wasn't obvious. The skipping doesn't happen too often, maybe a few times an hour. Beats audio is enabled when this happens, I haven't tried without.
Same Problem!
I have the same problem, when I'm listening to music the voice dialer suddenly pops up and starts dialing numbers from my call history to recent dialed or received numbers. this is so irritating. I installed an app called "headset Blocker" from Google play, it stopped the problem. But my question is why doesn't this phone support other companies earphones? And also whenever I put my headset into it, it displays the symbol of a headphone with mic, is it normal? If not what is the solution to this?

The reply above also raises an interesting point. Are you listening with headphones that have controls? Could you be pressing them, to make the track skip? If they are headphones meant for an iPhone, the buttons may not be doing what you think they should. Or their might be a short in the headset or the headset jack on the phone, that is making the phone think you are pressing the headset button. Have you tried another set of headphones, or listening on the phone's speaker?
Otherwise, try a factory reset, and if that doesn't solve it, swap it for a new one. Its not Android itself, I've never had this problem. Just a hardware or software defect with your particular handset, which can happen on any device, including the iPhone.

What do you mean by "support"? Do you mean, why don't the control buttons work on some headsets? Its because those controls were designed to work for an iPhone. Unfortunately, there aren't many headphones with buttons that work on Android out-of-the-box, but the mic should work fine (as well as the earphone audio, of course).
If you are trying to use a headset designed for the iPhone, and want the buttons to work, try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.chobirich.tools.mediabutton&feature=also_installed

Yes, that is normal. All it means is that headphones are attached. A bit obvious (as in, why do you need an icon to tell you that?). But intentional, nonetheless.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I am using a pair of Sennheiser headphones, there are no controls on them. I performed a hard reset but the problem persists although less frequently. Do you still think I should exchange it for a new one? Since you brought up software defects, I will add that when I restart the phone or power it off, then back on; when I unlock the screen the dialer is shown instead of the home screen. This only happens during the first unlock, so to speak, after restarting. Of course I just press the Home key to get back to the home screen, but it's still a nuisance.
No controls in my earphone.
No, I'm not using earphones with controls. I'm just using an earphone I got from my previous android phone because the At&t version of HTC One X did NOT come with earphones. But I must say, when I listen to music without the earphones, everything is perfect, but when I insert my earphone the voice dialer keeps popping up, the clarity of music deteriorates, tracks go forward and backward and what not. This is also happening while watching videos using earphones. That is why I asked if this phone supports all standard 3.5mm jack earphones or only HTC earphones.
So i have been using my Tone+'s for a while now and love them.
as soon as i upgraded my G-nex to 4.4 i had rediculously loud volume over BT. thought it was just a big in the build.
get my N5 yesterday, and i am having the same issues. i know the headset controls the volume now, but at its lowest setting, it is still pretty loud (louder than i would like)
am i the only one that has this problem? just curious
i have tried wired headphones and they are normal, i also tried a Jabra clipper BT headphone set and it was also normal.
how do 2 LG products not play perfectly together is beyond me.
Having the same issue here. For now, I'm using an equalizer and just lowering all the frequency bands to -13dB. Hopefully this gets fixed soon...
Same issues here. It's very frustrating as I also bought a wireless charging bad so I could be completely wireless at work.
It is Kit Kat issue on all devices that use the default Google Bluedroid Bluetooth stack, meaning Nexus devices and Google Play versions (other devices running a modified stack may not be affected).
Supposedly, it is an extension to Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 that enables Bluetooth audio devices to directly control Android's system volume. It seems some genius thought two independent volume levels (headphone volume and handset bluetooth level) was too confusing for folks. Clearly they did not think about (or test) that some Bluetooth audio devices with their own volume controls might default to a very high or low level, and control of only the handset's bluetooth level would not provide sufficient range of adjustment.
So once again we have Goofle googing up bluetooth in Android. Please share your disappointment in the following threads so that we might see a fix ASAP. Guessing they are facing law suits for hearing damage if it is not addressed quickly.

Does your older tone and car support a avrcp 1.3?
In my car, it's just the opposite. I now have to turn the level on the phone to max to hear anything. Before 4.4 I could leave it halfway.
I have used tone+ on my s4 and n5. Both are often too loud. I have always had to adjust the headset volume, handset volume and then the equalizer in poweramp to get things just right. I love them for music but if I get a call it is always way too loud.

I am unsure what what is to be honest. But if it has to do with showing the songs/artist etc on the screen, then yes it does that. Does it with my S2, N5 and will do it with an iPhone (work). Car is a Honda 2012
The issue with the Tone + is that it powers up at medium volume level, and when connected to an audio source, Android 4.4 now maps the volume control on the Tone to system volume.
As a work around I have found that, after powering up the Tone +, if you press the front most volume rocker repeatedly until you hear the low pitch tone you can lower the volume. Then when you connect to your audio source it is not so loud.
I hope Google fixes this soon, but I have low expectations based on other Bluetooth issues of the past.
Have you tried changing the sound type on the Tone+? (Holding down both volume buttons at the same time) I know if I have it on normal, high base or high treble they all have different volumes. This may help.
I mainly listen to podcasts, so I always set the EQ profile to the 3rd one (treble up).
It looks like 4.4.1 update fixed the battle between headset volume and handset volume. I'm a happy LG owner!
Hi all,
playing around with my new Nexus 5 I recognized a problem to control the volume of my external bluetooth loudspeaker.
First, the speaker connected normally as it used to with my GNex (JB 4.3). But with the Nexus 5 the volume seems to stay at maximum only. Pushing the volume buttons +/- of the phone shows up the volume control and I can see the volume going up and down. However, the speaker stays at max. volume independant of the volume setting.
Can somebody else please check this?
I updated my Nexus 7 to KitKat also. And... the same issue here. Perhaps my speaker has a problem?
Thanks
By the way... the speaker is a Philips SBT50
It's not the speaker... with the GNex everything works fine :-/

I have the same issue using a Jabra Play. I'm able to pull the volumne sliders to the min and it will stay there, however one click up, and it goes to max.
BeerGang .4 and Franco r14 but I think it did it on stock also...
google has some work that needs to be done with BT and KitKat.
i thankfully dont have this issue with my little BT speaker, but i have serious High Volume issues with my LG Tone+ BT headset....it is definingly loud at the lowes volume.
I use Bluetooth in my car and with the LG Tones (700) and I've tested it with the 730 tone+ and no issues. Bluetooth headset and I don't have this problem.
With my jbl speaker i habe the same Problem with my n5. Not possible to adjust volume via Bluetooth. When connected to LG sound bar volume control works well

I just got AirPods for my OnePlus One and while everything has been great, the only thing missing is pause/resume when taking them out of your ears. I've read conflicting reports about that feature working on Android, thus was wondering if any other 1+1 user has them?
Here is my experience so far:
- The microphone works in some apps, but not all, and not always.
- Pairing is like any other bluetooth earphone, BUT, you can also pair them to your Apple stuff and switching between Android/Apple is super easy (no need to re-pair)
- They turn on / connect as soon as you remove one bud from the case, which is super nice. This does not start playback so you don't have to hurry and put them in your ears.
- Listening to only one works (with the other in the case). Sometimes there will be a bug where the remaining bud will not register 2x taps to pause, but that does not happen often.
- 2x tap = pause/resume, even if you set it to Siri on Apple.
- 2x tap works 95% of the time (5% it doesn't register). That is true on Apple stuff as well though.
- Removing buds / putting them back does NOT pause/resume, at least not on my Android 6 OnePlus One.
- You can pair them to an Apple device once, then you can always connect them to that apple device from the airplay button or the control center thing.
- If you do that, it will auto-disconnect from the paired Android device.
- When you want it back on Android, you DON'T have to pair again, simply go into bluetooth settings and click on AirPods, they will connect back to your Android.
- This is MAJOR: even when you have the AirPods working on Android, the battery % shows up on your iOS device!! I still don't get how that works, but it does, and it is bloody fantastic.
It sounds like it's just software related as I've seen form posts regarding ear detection automatically switching from Spotify to apple music when the bud is reinserted. Maybe it's just a simple mod on the waiting (also the x2 tap doesn't work when the bud is out of ear which is evidence that the sensor is working)
And Im gathering as much info as I can into one centralized area. If you have experienced something that isn't already on the list, please feel fee to chime in here or on reddit . I'll be copying and pasting links from here to the report as well. I was gonna submit tomorrow but since I'm late to the party here, I'll send it Thursday evening. Thanks a lot everyone!

Bug reports
I find the keyboard misses a few vibrations on tapping letters, around 2 out of 10 taps.
Casting a movie to my TV stalls and stutters after about 10 minutes every time I try to watch a movie.

That shouldn't matter with the phone. I find that odd. Casting is nothing more than a web browser, more or less. The phone sends a URL to the Chromecast, then the Chromecast plays that URL and the phone is completely disconnected from what happens next other than the playback controls. Phone isn't playing anything, isn't transmitting data, etc. unless you're mirroring your screen or the app is actually streaming from the phone. I'd try a different app, use a speed test app on the chromecast, and do some other troubleshooting there.
Okay thanks. Will try a different app.

My Bose QC25 headphones seem to be incompatible with the USB-C/3.5mm adapter.
It seems like the volume down button is constantly being held down. As soon as I plug it in, ringer volume goes to vibrate.
In-line mic does not work.
Any in-line button press seems to reduce ringer volume and occasionally calls up google assistant.

I am using the Android cable. They work fine on other phones with 3.5mm jack.
However, on my previous Zenfone3 with USB-C, I used the Essential adapter and get the same results. It has to do with the adapter.
This will be going out to essential today at around 7pm pst so if there's anything I missed or anything you all wanna add, do yo thang
I have a problem with Bluetooth audio streaming to my car. I cannot rewind or fast forward. If I try to switch to the next/prior track the sound goes away, but it looks like my Google play music app is still playing. If I re-pair or switch inputs and go back to streaming, the audio plays again.
I can't replicate this problem with either my Google pixel or my wife's iPhone.

I have this issue as well, Also, what you said about the changing tracks, that happens to me as soon as a song ends, and not just with google play music, but with amazon music as well. And while my LG V10 and Moto G4 will send track names and album art to my radio, the PH-1 does not.
Sorry for the late response but everything has been added to the bug report and sent off to Essential. They got back to me with a response, "The whole Essential team monitors /r/Essential pretty religiously, and I know the SW team is looking at the thread. We love that you guys compile stuff like this, as it really does help us make a better product..."

Hi guys. I exchanged my Essential Phone yesterday (hardware defect) and now on my second device I still get this random fingerprint reader bug. Once in a while I take my phone out of my pocket and the fingerprint reader doesn't work. I have to press the power button to wake it up.

Fingerprint sensor
I have used all 5 instances of the fingerprint scanner for the same finger in multiple positions while holding the phone. Works fine once or twice but then all of a sudden won't recognize my fingerprint, have to use the pattern to unlock and even then I usually have to reboot the phone in order for the sensor to recognize my fingerprint and after a few times it goes back to not recognizing the fingerprint again. Essential phone ph-1
And yes I have cleaned my hands and fingers and cleaned the sensor multiple times with no change to effectiveness.

This isn't an Essential issue, this a Google dialer issue.
