In Lollipop, I had the following problem: while my phone was set to priority mode with only exceptions made for incoming calls/SMS from starred contacts. However, for some twisted reason, Facebook Messenger decided to still give a sound notification. The fact that there's a notification from the led and on my screen doesn't bother me (in fact, I find it quite usefull) but I use Priority Mode while I'm studying, training, ... so that I'm not disturbed for every mail, notification, ... I get but people can still reach me if it's urgent.
Since the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, I was very delighted to notice this issue was solved. It worked like a charm! BUT, now it doesn't anymore Since a few days, I recieve sound notifications while in Priority Mode, from Facebook Messenger. I've tried, re-installing the app, deleting the last apps I've installed before it stopped working, ... but nothing works.
I also tried to get a workaround through an app called "Automate", but I'm getting an error due to the fact my device isn't rooted, I think (and I prefer to keep it that way).
Anyone else who encountered this problem and perhaps have a soluion, anyone experienced with Automate to solve this? I'd rather stick with my unrooted device and my stock ROM (so not Cyanogen or something likewise).
Same problem here anyone found a solution?

When I got the phone (before rooting, etc.), my sister tried to send me a picture and I never recieved it. I kind of shrugged it off as a network error.
I use Go SMS instead of the stock SMS app anyway. Every now and then, I'd get a message saying "Messaging has stopped." but it never bothered me.
Since then, I rooted and installed the CM10 preview on the phone (amazing piece of work, might I add :highfive
I had issues reciving (and sending) pictures then, but I recall specifically reading there was issues with that.
After restoring to stock, the Messenger app wouldn't even load, and force closed every single time. It forced me to use a third party texting, but since I regularly use Go SMS, not a biggie for me. But no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the messaging app to ... well work.
Also, as before, I still cannot recieve a picture. No clue why. Makes no sense for me. Sounds like a software issue, but after multiple restores / formats, I'm really not sure.
A friend of mine also had the same issue. I'm posting to see if anyone's come accross this before, AND possible solutions.
Thanks for your input guys! :good:

Just noticed someone posting something similar about this. No one has anything to report on this topic?
Hi guys.
November 28 I have a problem with the notifications of Hangouts and Facebook Messenger. If the message comes on the screen turned off it does not notice. It was only when I turn the screen it appears notification. I checked everything, from programs, modifying the change ROM with another version of Android and the kernel. During testing, it does not turn the settings, do not sync anything but I installed hangouts. Also format the memory card. I do not know what to do. I did not change the radio, I do not know what is.
Thanks for any advice.
Felt that no one knows the cause. Strange problem...
Maybe someone is interested. I found this:
[APP][2.2+][ROOT][FREE][12-SEP-2013] Push Notifications Fixer v4.1
Google Talk disconnecting repeatedly, also affecting push notifications
I will check. Strange that only me that problem exists.
No change. Push Notification with Hangouts and Facebook Messenger comes along with notification of new mail with Gmail (including notification push). I do not know what else to do...
Be sure you're not the only one.
I'm struggling with the exact same problem on my HTC One XL for mothes.
Nothing helps.
I'm mad by now...
So do I. So far I have not found this method, and lost a substantial functionality.
I tried to contact Google several times, but no response. Waiting for service updates to version 4.1.31 google, as nothing will change that sell Sensation...
Problem solved, it turned out that I had no Z710 Sensation, only Sensation 4G. I do not know what exactly is different except that 4G was available in T-Mobile.
Can anyone help me figure out why Google Messenger is showing all my contacts as Unknown Sender. Everything works fine if I use Textra or the native sms app. I'm using an Honor 8.
The exact same thing just started happening to me with my Honor 8. I don't know what caused it. I'm on the 7.0 EMUI 5.0 Official build, and it just started happening last night

I tried reinstalling it but it still persists.
It also stopped working for me with the update to 7.0. Extremely annoying considering its my go to SMS app and I can't stand the stock one :/ Considering a factory reset...Unless anyone knows of a fix. I've played around with every permissions setting and have zero luck thus far.
I've had this happen to me too. It's very frustrating. I'm considering a factory reset, but would be even angrier if that doesn't fix the problems. In addition to every conversation switching from "Unknown Caller" is that the keyboard or reply option is completely gone. I had to switch back to the native app.
Other issues I have with EMUI are that Google Camera doesn't work, although I heard that Google is only allowing that to be installed on Nexus devices. It doesn't show up in a Playstore search anymore. Attempts to side load it have failed.
Another issue I have is that the Email app won't dismiss the unread count bubble all the time. It seems to be intermittent. A reboot or several hours clears this issue up for awhile.
(Sorry for multiple bug reports in this thread, but Google Messenger not working is really bothering me most.)
Dear XDA Forum!
first: yes i used the search function although i couldn't find a thread which addresses my issue in general, also i tried a few of the fixes regarding the notifications although it didn't solve my problem.
Phone: Doogee S88 Plus
OS: Android 10
I received this phone a while back and i'm pretty happy about it, although i noticed a very strange behaviour regarding nearly all apps.
Apperantly, every app that isn't a foreground app, will get killed or at least will not send notifications until they are opened which, you sure can think, is damn annoying.
Also, apps won't start with Android Auto, except Google Apps like News, calendar, maps and such. Spotify, Audible and every "external" apps will refuse to start on android auto until i open them manually on the phone, then they will show up on my car as well.
i checked the installed software and noticed a preinstalled energy saving app (which is funny with an 10Ah battery but well ) called com.cydroid.softmanager
Thinking this could be an issue i uninstalled/deactivated the app via ADB, although it didn't get better in any form.
And yes, of course i checked the battery optimization which is turned off for the usual apps which send notifications like Signal, Threema, Outlook, Authenticator and such
As i use Signal as my SMS/MMS app, i can say that i will not receive SMS/MMS notifications as well, i will receive them if i use the standard SMS app Messages though.
Also notifications in general are activated.
Maybe it has something to do with Doze? I'm currently at my wit's end.
I already thought about rooting the device, although it doesnt seems like that there is any rom out there for it, it has the option for OEM Bootloader unlock in the dev options though, but to be honest it's been a long while since i rooted android devices except from Samsung.
Hopefully you guys can help me!
Kind regards
**edit**
also i think it has to do with the background apps in general since foreground apps like my VPN (Cyberghost) will keep running without issues
also i noticed if i restart the phone all the apps will start correctly in the background, so it seems, since i'll get the notifications immediately
Basically what happens is I get old texts from previous conversations as if they were new. They will come in randomly but tend to follow the sequence of the conversation, so it basically replays the conversation but slowly over the day. Seems to affect group chats more. It makes following conversations very hard since they are full of old texts that are not relevant but they show up as new. Also annoying to keep getting notifications when I'm actually waiting for a text only to see that it's an old text that I got days ago.
Current phone is Google Pixel 4A with CalyxOS, but I've also tried Graphene OS and had the same issue. I've tried the stock app as well as QKSMS. I did not get the issue with Signal (using as SMS client) but they dropped support for SMS, so this started back again as soon as I switched off Signal. I even tried putting the sim card in my old phone (stock android) and it's still doing it! This part is strange to me because when this problem first surfaced, doing this did fix the problem.
How do I make this stop or begin troubleshooting this? Nobody in my contacts is having this issue so trying to convince them to switch to another messaging system is kind of futile, this is my problem. I am starting to wonder if I should just get an iphone like everyone else because it just works, but I really hate the closed nature of apple ecosystem.
I was thinking of looking into how to do app development and modify an existing open source client so that it ignores texts that have a send date older than 24h, but before I do that, is there already a text client for Android available in the F droid store or as an APK that would have such a feature?
So this is not just group chats like I thought. Starting to get old texts I got from single conversations now. Even pictures get resent. These show up as new texts, though they still have the original send date. This will at least make it easier to filter these out.
Anyone have an ideas how to make this stop? Driving me insane. I really don't want to have to write my own app.
Anyone? This problem is driving me insane. It started happening with a vengeonce again. I am being bombarded by old texts that I already got days ago. It's just playing out the entire conversation over the course of a few days. Have to put the phone in airplane mode to make it stop otherwise the phone is just lit up non stop with old texts coming in.
At very least is there some kind of logging of sorts I can enable that would help me better troubleshoot this?
Inreally dont know but i Remember this happened to me sometime ,maybe Just try a factory reset or change rom , i dont know
I tried several roms, resets etc. While it was happening I even put the sim card in another phone and it started doing it on that phone too. It's also not a carrier issue since I'm the only person having this issue. I've also tried all sorts of text apps. The only one it didn't do it with was Signal but they dropped SMS support, which really sucks.
