Is there a way to uninstall apps such as Instagram without root or better yet to root without triggering knox to not allow me to use samsung pay. I want to install these apps through the app store since then I am able to set smart manager to optimize them and close them in the background when not in use.
Unfortunately, no. There is no way to actually uninstall bloatware without root, and from what I understand, there's no way to root without tripping KNOX since root requires a modified kernel.
You can disable them though

Package Disabler Pro - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
This will do exactly what you're looking to do. Root is not required, it does not trip Knox, and you can disable ANY app. But be careful. Disable the wrong thing(s) and you may negatively affect performance.

You won't get any space back in the user partition even if you do uninstall system apps, because they reside in the system partition.

+1. System apps are in the system partition and therefore deleting them won't give you any storage back. Honestly, in this case there's really no difference between disabling and uninstalling, I just forgot all about package disabler pro.

Ah true that. His whole point was wanting to optimize them though, which essentially means if they go unused, that they'll be hibernated, which is almost the same thing as disabling them.

I dunno I wouldn't call optimizing and disabling the same thing. One you simply have to open to resume normal function. The other you have to disable, then re-enable when you want to use it, and then disable again...

Yeah you're right. I was just comparing them since a hiberbated app and a disabled app still basically do the same thing, which is absolutely nothing.
I wouldn't worry about attempting to move to userdata in order to optimize the apps. With the long list of apps I froze using Package Disabler Pro, my battery life improved at least 10-15%. Now on the new update yesterday, it's borderline insane how much better my battery is lasting. And nothing has been optimized yet since the default period is 3 days and we haven't reached 72 hours post-update yet.

Sure. But if you use it on a regular basis, it won't be optimized anyway. The app has to sit idle before anything happens.

I think we are speaking on semantics. Frankly we don't know how he uses his phone. For instance I check my Instagram maybe 3 or 4 times a day. Far too often for me to be enabling/disabling apps just to check my feed.

Absolutely true.
The way I see it, we're all just offering alternatives since he does not want to root and/or lose Samsung Pay.
"Disabled in background when not in use" tells me he wants them there when he needs them but he doesn't really need them cranking down data or cycles on the cpu when he isn't using them. How well the optimization works or doesn't is neither here nor there.
Not to mention disabling and optimizing are two different things and not really an answer to the ops question.
Frankly without root I don't think what he is trying to accomplish will work.
My question is why do you think optimization won't work on system apps?

I am running tweakstock1.4 rom with PBJ kernal. I recently froze the system apk SDM.apk idea being it is blocked by the rom to keep it from down loading OTA updates but it is eating up the battery trying to or looking for the OTA. I went one step further and uninstalled the SDM.apk all together. So far so good ill need a little more time to see if it helps with battery life. But if anyone wants to try it I haven't had any fcs lag or any problems since removing it try at your own risk but I think the coast is clear.
Thanks for the update, please keep us posted.

Where would you get a crazy idea like SDM using up excessive battery from?
Anyway, freezing did the trick for me. Confirmed.
From a thread in the tweakstock rom post....at the very least it may be one more unneeded apk
I, too, froze it on nismo's advice. I've noticed no bad effects, and the plus is that I burned a hell of a lot less battery while on airplane mode.
I'll report in here if this keeps up tomorrow. So far so good!

I'm glad it wasn't just me that this could be useful to! Your battery usage was definitely atypical and freezing the rogue process app is much much better than the nuke and pave approach IMO. I like getting to the bottom of things.

sdm.apk is considered as bloat ware. If you're in any doublt, just use root explore and move the sdm.apk from /system/app to any location on your sdcard as a backup. This way for sure it's not in use. I used betterbatterystats to verify it after froze the app and I don't see it any more.

I'm sure it uses another mechanism to make things invisible to the OS. It might just change the permissions. Either way, freezing has always worked for me.

I verified it was not active after freezing SDM 1.0 even before I posted my discovery in the tweakstock thread so I'm well aware. My question was specifically to the OP because he said that it was draining battery even after freezing.

He's a noob, what do you expect?haha just kidding. When titanium froze an app, that app is DEAD unless SDM 1.0 is not sdm.apk. But if it is it's dead. I haven't seen sdm since I froze SDM1.0. Judging just by battery life is not the right way, because battery life can be impacted by other process too, not just SDM. He must use tools like betterbatterystats or something to see the inner process. That's my IMO.
I was about to flash the Eclipse rom and thought I would remove the apk all together just to see if there were any repercussions. If it fouled things up no problem I was going to flash Eclipse anyway. I hadn't read about anybody removing it so I wanted to post my experience for the benefit of others. Apologies for my poor wording of what I was doing I didn't mean to convey that the apk was still sucking battery after it was frozen. Just wanted to say I hadn't had any problems after removing it.
Posted this in another thread but it's more relevant here:

Not sure I would call it "bloat ware". It's a tech support / CS service. It's bloat when it's not needed, great when it is needed.

Right, but wouldn't you need to ODIN stock EP4D before getting any tech support / CS anyway? If that's the case, no need for SDM.

AdBlock plus is working for me un-rooted. I have to swap my phone out with T-Mobile, just waiting on my replacement.
Just use NoChromo browser, it's Chrome without ads. It's the best.
I use Adguard. It works on none rooted phones and works to remove any ad from all browsers. Does not work on in app ads though. It also works by making a VPN on your phone and then filtering content that goes through the VPN.

Thanks! Trying adguard now. Was a bit nervous since its not in Google play, seems pretty good so far. Will post follow up after I use it for a bit.

I'm also using adguard free, works great on chrome even seems to load pages faster. This is off topic a bit but, how do you turn the notification off on the lock screen and from the drop down? I'm using the widget to turn adguard off/on which also turns off the notifications. I even went into settings to block notifications from the app but they're still there. Ideas?

I did block background data. It was using mobile data for some reason. I always turn off adguard when I'm not using chrome, so maybe that's why I haven't noticed a battery drain.

Adblockplus is a browser correct? Couldn't find Nochromo in the playstore. Typically i would prefer an app over a new browser because i do like chrome, but ads are driving me nuts so I can always adjust to running a new browser.

If it's still not working and you're planning to do a restore you can create a backup within the phone itself by going into settings and tap backup and reset and set an account to backup to and then wait for a little bit so it can send the backup to your account after that just press and hold the volume up button and power button at the same time until the phone shuts down and it should give you the option to factory reset.
