Z5 Signal strength vs z3, note 5, edge plus, nexus 6 2014 - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi thinking of getting a z5 or edge plus, the signal strength on the z2/z3 was very poor compared to my old nexus 6 on 3 UK. Whats your opinions? Signal is the main factor for me.

I had a OnePlus One and a Note 3 before. So far, my Z5 signal quality is a lot better (green and yellow most of the time). With my OnePlus One and Note 3, same usage pattern, it would be red and yellow almost all the time. Nothing scientific here I know, but yeah according to the Battery menu, the Z5 is better than both of these phones I've used

It might be worth noting that manufactures independently determine how many bars are shown in the notification tray. For example, Samsung might display 3 bars at -116 db while HTC only shows 2. If you really want to compare this, you need to have all the phones you want to compare activated on the same carrier at the same time and use the discovery app to see what the raw signal strength (in db) readings are.

Switching from an iPhone 6 - advice needed

Hi guys,
I've used Android for a long time, and my last phone was a Nexus 5 (which I sold recently). As the iPhone 6 finally got a larger screen, I thought I'd try it out to see how I feel about it. In all honesty, the iPhone is a great phone with a solid OS, however I'm finding that I'm missing Android. I loved being able to have widgets on multiple home screens that gave me information without needing to launch an app, and I miss the way I was able to make the device unique to me. My iPhone home screen looks the same as everyone else's iPhone.
Now, coming from a Nexus 5 (which admittedly, felt cheap) the iPhone immediately feels like a premium smartphone, and I know that the Xperia Z series also have a premium build quality. I feel like the Z3 will be the perfect device to get me back to Android as I want something that is aesthetically great as well as powerful.
My main gripes with my Nexus 5 were that the build quality was cheap-feeling, and the N5 was known to have a really weak cell radio. In fact, I used to think my carrier wasn't great, but realised from having the iPhone that it was the fact that the N5 had a crappy radio. My iPhone has strong reception even in weaker coverage areas, and good signal is important to me - does the Z3 have good cell reception? Also, I travel on the London Underground to work every day, and when I would get above ground my N5 would take ages to lock onto a signal whereas my iPhone locks on immediately. How good is the Z3 at locking onto signal when you emerge from a no-coverage area?
Another thing, I know that the Z3 has a 20.7MP camera which is great, but I'd rather shoot in 8MP for smaller file sizes. Is it possible to change the resolution in the camera app? I was able to choose different resolutions with my N5.
One last thing - I've noticed that the iPhone screen is significantly brighter than my N5 screen was, and doesn't drain battery as quickly on higher brightness as the N5 did. How bright is the Z3 screen? Does the battery suffer significantly when the brightness is cranked up?
Sorry for all the questions. Would really appreciate some input guys.
I carry both a Z2 and an iPhone 6 on a regular basis, here are some answers, keep in mind this is comparing the older Z2 though.
- The reception on the Z2 is good but not great, the iPhone 6 edges it out but not by a whole lot
- Z2 seems fairly good on picking up a signal after it has gone out of range. I really don't think there's anything in it between the two devices here.
- Both the Z2 and Z3 have a "superior auto" mode which downsamples to 8MP. This is the mode you will most likely shoot in most of the time. Manual mode also has a range of MP choices and not just 20MP.
- The Z2 screen is rated to be dimmer than the Z3 screen so it's tough to say here, but I will say that if I were to set both my Z2 and iPhone 6 to equal perceived brightness, the Z2 would still have much greater screen on time than the iPhone 6 would, by a lot. I believe the Z3 would only be better in this department. It's not even close.
Thanks for your input
Does anyone else have any advice too? Maybe someone else that has also switched from an iPhone?
Coming from the Nexus 4, I only have good things to say about my Z3.
Reception is generally a lot better than my old N4. In areas where I used to have no service, I would still have service on my Z3. Picking up the signal again after going from somewhere with no coverage seems a lot faster than my old N4 (think seconds compared to a minute or two).
The Z3 shoots in 8MP using the default mode. You have to switch to manual if you want to pick different MPs. The time it takes to take pictures is a lot slower than the iPhone though, but that's the problem with a lot of Android phones which will be fixed with Android L.
The Z3 is pretty bright. I was able to get 6-7 hours of screen on time with full brightness all day, while listening to about 4-5 hours of music, watching 45 minutes of video, playing 2-3 hours of games and browsing the internet during the other times. If you're not doing too much CPU-intensive stuff, you can expect to get around 10 hours SOT give or take an hour. I wouldn't worry about battery life.
Overall the Z3 looks great and definitely feels like a premium phone.

Weak signal?

Has anyone noticed weaker signal on the Moto G vs other phones? I compared it to my GS4 at work and noticed in places te GS4 gets -108 to -109dbm the Moto G gets -112 to -117dbm, the data speeds on speed tests seem comparable, but that's a noticeably weaker signal which is surprising from a phone by a company known for great reception. I always felt the claims of weaker signal on some phones were mostly just crap, but now I seeing a noticeable difference. Has anyone else noticed this?

You saying that concerns me a little. My 2nd gen has always had a weaker signal than my wife's LG and weaker than her previous Huawei. I hope it isn't a trend for these phones, because there have been times when I can get no signal and she at least gets 1 bar.

I'm not 100% sure, but signal seemed to be at least 2-5dbm weaker if not more in various other places as well. I returned the phone today though because Motorola dropped band 12 from its specs.

OP5T vs OP6 Comparison Thread

For those of you who are coming from the OnePlus 5T and have had a little time to use your 6, how are you ranking the differences between the two phones? Let's get a comparison thread going.
Here are some sample comparisons to mention.
Which is brighter in direct sunlight?
Which has a stronger/easier to notice notification LED?
Which has stronger notification vibration?
Which has louder speaker?
Which is easier to use one-handed?
Which has better colors in the display?
Which camera do you prefer (low light vs. daylight)?
Which has better battery life?
Which seems more durable against scratches?
Which looks more "premium" or nicer to you?
Which do you prefer overall?
Which seems "faster" in daily use?
Which gets "hotter" to touch with heavy use?
Which alert slider is easier to adjust?
Which has better WiFi performance.
Which has better 4G/LTE performance.
Which has better cellular call reception/audio quality.
Here are some comparisons I found on the web:

I sold my 5T a while back but I will do my best by going off memory...
- The 6 definitely seems brighter in sunlight
- LED seems very dim on the 6, maybe dimmer than the 5T (I don't use it anyway so a non-issue for me)
- Vibration seems about the same and having the 2XL as well, both vibration motors are inferior to the 2XL
- Speaker seems louder and more clear on the 6
- Both feel the same with one-handed use
- Can't recall the colours on the 5T, but the 6's look amazing! Very vibrant
- Don't take too many low light shots, so daylight for sure
- 5T gave me poor battery life; I was getting 8-9 SOT on my 5, then about 4-5 SOT on the 5T. On my 6, I'm easily getting 6-7 SOT!
- Scratches I cannot say much on as I use a case and screen protector on all my phones from day 1
- The glass definitely makes the 6 feel more premium
- Overall, I prefer the 6
- The 6 seems a lot faster than the 5T; it's even outperforming my 2XL in things like app launch speeds!
- The 5T never got noticabley hot and the 6 follows that trend
- Alert slider is fairly easy to adjust on both phones, however I do prefer the new placement on the 6, since I can now adjust with my thumb

Oneplus 5t and Oneplus 6 are the same company and both are very good smartphone. Nevertheless I think the design of OnePlus 5T looks better than One Plus 6, and there is very little difference between the new model and the old model.

@op Can you add network/modem LTE performance comparison as well? For who aren't familiar 835 packs X16 whereas 845 packs most powerful X20 modem with 4 antennas, which should considerably improve Network reception and performance.. Any tests over this would be very useful!

Question Xiaomi Mi 8 (PixelExperience) vs Pixel 7 - Cellular & Wifi signal

Hi all,
I noticed that my WiFi signal and cellular reception were slightly worse on my Pixel 7 compared to my older and €300 cheaper Xiaomi Mi 8 which runs the PixelExperience ROM on A12 so I made a comparison. I'm quite disappointed with my new Pixel phone when it comes to this. Also the lack of an infrared front camera for face unlocks in the dark is something I miss dearly along with the lack of a notification LED (aodNotify just doesn't feel the same & uses more battery).
Well, attached my findings. Notice that it's in dB, so logarithmic and thus quite some difference. The phones were laying next to each other and I SIM swapped, so same provider.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Question Maybe it's me..

But I bought a Pixel 7 Pro for my wife to use. Her Note 20 had a cracked camera. We didn't check to see how much it was to fix at the time it got cracked.
After using Galaxy Note's for a while, she hated the Pixel. I got her Note fixed and paid off the Pixel. I've played with it while at home, but after using a Note 10 for awhile, its much more heavier and just feels cumbersome compared to the Note 10.
I do like a lot of what the Pixel experience offers. And it makes me think, should I sell the Pro and look at the regular 7? The size is comparable to the Note 10. But the thing that gives me pause is the battery life on the 7.
Is that a valid question to have?
Just need some advice. Thanks.

Battery life is an issue. It's not anywhere near as good as I had hoped right now, but there was a time it was stellar and a time when it was as bad as it is now

That's the one thing that kills me about the phone. I'll say this, the Note 10 I'm using still gets around 5 hrs SOT. And it's a much older phone.

I mean the Note 10 doesn't have 5G so feel free to disable the 5G modem and compare at that point. ALL 5G devices can be woefully inefficient given the right/wrong conditions. There are plenty of us exceeding that 5 hour SoT point which would seem to suggest there is some variable affecting you that isn't affecting all of us. I'm sitting at 50% with 4h12m15s right now on my 7 Pro...
I'm considering giving my wife the Pixel 7 Pro and going back to the OnePlus 11 (when available) - only because I need to set a specific ringtone for each of the SIMs and out of the box the Pixel cannot do this without using a 3rd party application. She enjoys taking pictures and the Pixel 7 Pro has one of the best cameras and she would enjoy this compared to her older iPhone device.
I been getting good battery life out of my Pixel 7 pro. Given I don't use my phone to much at work. Besides calling, sending some quick emails responses when not on my laptop and playing music on my headphones . I usually end the day with about 50% charge. That is with Bluetooth on and Samsung health app also running all the time. Screen time is very similar to the other user. I have learned to love the device and got used to the size as I have had always bigger phones. My wife's pixel 7 also has been pretty good in both departments. My prior two phones (Xiaomi mi 11, OnePlus 7t ) would have also a very similar screentime and that was without 5g. I have to say live and work in an area that has solid 5g so for me it's been pretty solid too. The pixel experience is also pretty nice. Also you can set individual contacts ringtones on the pixel 7 pro and 7. When entering the contact on the right hand corner the three dot menu will give you the option to set individual ringtones for that contact . I don't use dual sim but perhaps you can manage like that .cheers
