Sony Xperia Z5 (Standard) - Tapping Rattle? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently upgraded with Vodafone UK to the new Sony Xperia Z5, I like it, but this is the second one I have had delivered because of a rattle problem/fault with the first one. Received 2nd one, same problem, a fault within the hardware - a rattle vibration when you tap in the corners of the phone. It sounds like it hasn't been fitted together properly, it doesn't feel solid. See video. If you have a Sony Z5 standard, check yours out, doe sit make this rattle vibration?
Sony/Vodafone, please get it sorted as the phone is great apart from this hardware build flaw.
Has anyone else noticed this problem?
Edit; Tried to post a YouTube link, but this forum won't let me yet. Go on to You Tube and enter "Sony Xperia Z5 (standard) - tapping rattle" it should take you to the video.

Just insert the link with a space in the middle

Lol, that's weird. It totally sounds like it's just a box that vibrates when you touch it, with some random stuff shaking around inside. I wish I knew why Sony has so many production issues. this kinda thing is why Samsung is winning. That and the weird camera algorithms. (sorry, bout to go off topic) Seriously, when you put so much money into R and D of excellent camera Hardware, why not take the time to make sure the resulting images are up to par with the competition, who isn't using anywhere near as impressive hardware.

I notice phone rattle in every brand of phones, maybe is rattle is the camera lens? Tapping it that hard of course there will be some kind of rattles I don't hear any rattles in normal use or shaking the phone

It's the vibration motor. The bearings that it uses to produce vibration might rattle. Look at disassembly pictures of phones and when you compare from where the rattle comes from it's always the same place the vibration motor is in.

[Q] Few questions about Z3 - speakers, waterproofing, light leakage, 3.5mm output

Hey guys.
I bought my phone yesterday and now I have some concerns and questions about it:
1. my top speaker sound different from my bottom one - bottom one sound tinier than the top one, my guess is that the top one plays low frequency sounds while the bottom one plays the high ones... Was just wondering do I have a defective device or is it how it's meant to be?
2. my screen is centered unlike some cases I've seen on the net but I do see light leaking around bottom/left side and I'm wondering whether that'll affect my phone's waterproofing or not?
3. does the Z3 have low volume output through the headphone jack than other flagships? I've tested it with iPhone 5S and Note 3 and it seems to have lower volume at its highest.
4. does the stamina mode work or no? Because my WIFI stays on even when stamina mode is on and I'm not sure that it makes any difference to the battery life, but then again, I had this phone for less than 48 hours so I'm not sure.
1)It seems to be normal.... Mine gives the same sound output too
2)I don't know about that... An user told me that someone, with lights from gaps like you, after a water test, his z3 is still alive so... Can I ask you to post here one or two photos of the screen? I'm curious to see, you are the first I know with no gaps on the smartphone
for 3 and 4 questions, I don't know, sorry man

Good to hear that, I was worried that I had a defective device even though when I listen to music with both speakers I don't really hear the difference, I have to cover one to hear it.
Sure, here are the pictures, I'm not sure, maybe I do have gaps on all sides thus I think I don't have any. lol

Here you can see the leakage: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dg4uyxejic3airp/IMG_9909.jpg?dl=0
I think it'd be best if you'd download and zoom in for inspecting, those are 18mp files. I'm pretty curious to know whether it's got gaps that I don't see or I'm just lucky.
Man, I've controlled the photos very well and... yes, the glass seems to be centered in the perfect way. Same distance between the glass and the frame on the top, the bottom, the left side and the right side. Perfect... So, I guess it's the same story about the z2 with the gaps situated on the top right side of the phone. On ten devices, one or two are assembled in the right way that a user expects to have. And you man are very lucky to have bought a right one. I've decided to use the recess (I live in Italy, and before 14 days you can send it back without any explanation) and send mine back.. My z3 has the glass not centered, and like you I have a line of light coming out from the gap on the right side... I hope it's a manufacturing problem that takes the first models assembled by Sony, maybe generated by the short times to put the smartphones on the market... I really hope that it is that. I'll buy a Z3 next month again, and than I'll see...
It feels good, I'll be homest. Lol
My device was the last one left in the shop if I were to come an hour later it would have been sold and I would have to wait for another batch...
I still wonder whether it's waterproof or not though...
the best thing you can do is to go to a Sony assistance center, and take a water test. If something go wrong, you will not have any type of risk, because you have a technician near you that will see a possible damage, and in the worst case your z3 will be replaced. But, before anything, send an email to sony for more explanation about that.
Yeah I will try to get in contact with Sony through internet. Can't do the water test since there's no Sony in my country, only licensed retailers...
I think the volume output with headphones is way too low on max. That's the only real complaint I have because everything else is amazing with this phone.
Yeah it's a pitty... I have tried volume boostets too, but they do literally nothing... Is there any other way to boost it?
I'm thinking about getting an EX110 / 110AP but I'm worried that it would be useless because they are pretty cheap and I think that and z3's output will be pretty bad together... Oh well, we weren't as lucky as z2/1 users so it'll be better than the headphones that came with the phone.
1. I don't have any speaker problems I done the service test aswell
2. I don't have any light leakage
3. Imo its around the same output as my GFs note 3 but its lower than my note 4 I've tried with my beats mixrs and the MDR-NC31EM, the boxed MH750s and Samsungs boxed headphones same song, same settings which is equalizer bars all set to 0 and bass on and nothing else e.g no studio or surround sound etc.
4. Yes mine works

You mean top and bottom speakers sound exactly the same while covering one and leaving the other open?
How does yor stamina mode work? Do you see your wifi disabled when unlocking the phone or is it how it's meant to be? Because I can see it like it wasn't even disabled...

Yes they sound the same to me
yes that is how stamina mode works, if your stamina mode is on, on the right hand side of the battery there will be a + sign.
I have the same issue with the speakers, think they're just like that. Stamina mode seems to work ok on mine, in that it stays "asleep" until I wake the screen. No light leaking on mine and my screen is centred, although I wouldn't use light leaking as an indicator that water would get into the phone. Light shines through glass boxes but water doesn't go through glass. It's probably just thin paint etc.

[Q] Z3 Backplate coming loose?

Hi Z3 owners.
I just noticed a rather disturbing clicking noise from my Z3 when picking it up yesterday. After prodding about with it for a couple of minutes, it turns out that its coming from the middle of the back panel on the phone.
It sounds like the glue has come unstuck in the middle between case and phone. Only seems to be in the middle though, nowhere else.
Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue? Or if its always been there and is just something ive never noticed before.
Im just a little concerned about the effect on water resistance. It looks like it was a significant problem on the Z / Z1 but, not seen any reports on the newer Z models.
TIA
I just did a quick check and..... it does make noises
Apparently Sony doesn't know how quality control works....
I've had this issue on both of my Z3's. The first one was not waterproof and failed underwater, the touchscreen no longer works.
My new one will be going back to T-Mobile as the camera button is defective as well...

5 Major flaws with this phone

#1: The sd/sim tray is so poorly designed it'll actually not slot into place properly and I've used this device for only a few minutes. This means the IP rating is basically useless since if anything sips in due to how the tray is designed it'll leak straight to the screen and everything else. I've tried to use minor force to slot in in the place "properly" but the thing is that the flat part that covers the slot wobbles meaning it is not static, which means we have a topkek moment a la Z1-5 flap issue all over again.
#2: The sd card reader is gimped, less than half (getting 1/3) the speeds compared to say the XZ1.
#3: Now let's talk about the elephant in the room shall we? The glass backside, It's not flat! Meaning it can't sit on anything with a slight decline like your bed, pillow, or anything slippery for that matter. You either buy a derpy case or live with the fact that this device can't even sit flat unless otherwise.
#4: Weight was added for no reason, and a lot of people tend to believe that weight equals quality, but in this case it had no reason whatsoever. And what's the best of it all?! Said weight made it thicker, which means they had plenty of space to add that headphone jack that was removed because they had to follow the fruitcake trend. And because it's rounded in the rear, it makes the actual thickness seem thinner than it's predecessor which is around 2-3mm thinner which has guess what? A headphone jack! And don't give me that BS about needed cooling, the S9 is thinner (about the same as the XZ1) and comes in both Exynos and SD flavors.
#5: Let's remind ourselves once again why the headphone jack was removed, not to mention a lot of regions won't even ship with any headphones (nordic region here) which felt kinda cheap, but at least they provided a dongle!
I got a pair of MDR-EX650AP and WH-H900N if anyone is wondering and both come in handy, trust me.
Goto admit I love my XZ2 and I only agree with you on No.2 and No.5...
2... Im using a Samsung 64GB 95mb/s SDCard andthe read speed is rubbish.. this is my second XZ2 and its exactly the same.. so it tells me theres a software issue.. In both the SONY Music app and using the home screen widget, from pressing play.. It takes about 3 secs before music starts playing.. and Im getting lag when accessing phot9os and files on SDCard... theres been 2 updates so far... 145 and 159.. and neither updates have fixed this
5.. Dont even mention the stupidity of removing the Headphone jack from devices ... its been a thorn in everyones side since HTC, the first Android Dev to follow Apple with this "Sheep" like trend on their U Ultra last March 17.. and now its a thing... do you know what really gets me is everybody complains about on forums, yet nobody goes on a Devs Twitter or FB page and says "I was going to buy your phone, but because you removed the 3.5 jack, Ive bought a Samsung instead"... do you know, if everyone started saying that.. we'd have the Jack back by 2019... because regardless of the device you actually buy.. theres nothing worse for a DEV than critisism on their front pages.
Anyway... I think the XZ2 is a gorgeous device, beautifully weighted, stunning.. yes, STUNNING and simple camera, great speakers.. anda great screen, No its not perfect.. buts its pretty good
I'd also add the downgrading of the front camera to 5mp from the 13mp in last year's XZ models. Though I wonder if that could have been a space issue at the edge for the module.
It's the one thing (well and the SD card speed) that is keeping me from upgrading from an XZ1. Though if the price gets low enough...
And #6 - no double tap to wake the phone... I am not sure why this was removed since the Sony X series.. its a real shame....

Camera isn't that bad. But don't use the Auto Mode!
I've made some comparisons (maybe i can show one later at home) and the auto mode is just bad. It makes blurry pictures, especially the darker areas. Switching to manual mode with auto settings raises the quality extremely. Don't know if that's a bug or whatever...

Guys do you have problems with screen scrolling? I can see alot blur on screen when I scrool black tekst on white page. It makes me dizzy. Is it because poor pixel response time on that IPS panel? I had before Lenovo Zuk Z2 IPS and Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro AMOLED and no problems on them at all. I have this on Oreo and this Android P beta... This LCD seems to be terrible... also too much of white colours, looks like milk splash on glass. Any way to fix it? Colour calibration does not help on these both issues.

It gets scratched as crazy; got scratches both on the back & front after a few days of usage.
In comparison, my Xiaomi Mi Mix displayed similar "material usage" after 1 year. Something's definitely wrong.

Weird, mine is fine.
There is also a bend and scratch test on YouTube to demonstrate it.
Found 2 more flaws -.-
1. The Speakers are not Watercapable.
Took the phone into the shower with me... Sound volume dropped by 70% as soon as the phone got splashed with water.
2. Microphone placement!
They really placed the microphone beside the USB Port... Where do you place your little finger when you hold your phone at the ear? At the Bottom! To prevent this slippery phone from sliding out of your hands. If your placement is bad you will fully cover the microphone and then person on the other end of the call won't hear a thing! Happened multiple times to me before I realized this -.-

There are water resistant speakers which break physical laws and transmit the sound through water without any quality degradation?

1. Water will block sound waves, not a huge amount you can do with a phone.
2. Not an issue for me as I use my left ear and my little finger is the other side of the USB.
My most annoying thing on this phone is the XZ2 is very slippery!! Cannot even sit calmly if there is a slight angle on the surface! Have to buy a case to prevent this though...

You are dumb. Speaker grill has some material that prevent water to drop inside and if water stays on grill, sound can't get through that water. Dry it and sound will increase again. That is common for all phones. This is not a flaw.

"Dumb" is impolite, but I can understand you.
Everyone who had physics in school should understand this behaviour.
Btw.
I hate 2 things
1. The DRM **** (it is my first Sony phone)
So I hope for a drm fix which doesn't reduce the camera quality if used with aosp and gcam.
2. The slow, undocumented sdcard performance of 20mb/sec.
The only flaw that stops me from buying anything from the XZ2 line-up is the sad lack of development support, specially custom kernel development.
Sadly enough.

Worst xperia ever..

Returned this phone. Why?
Having come from z3 , was expecting vast improvement.
Too heavy, absolute brick. Infact I swear you would get RSI from holding it too long.
Speakers, nasty , distorted at high volume. Maybe just mine, but shop said loads of them returned.

No 3.5 headphone jack. Nuff said.
No FM radio.
Its spins when on flat desk, even with case!!
Fingerprint scanner in totally wrong place.
Really poor design.
Really? U din't check before buying?
Complain by Sony and not here !! -__-
I also came from Z3. I have to say that it is a major improvement over Z3.
As a matter of fact, we recognize haters because they always start a new thread instead of posting in the already existing threads...
Yeah, the hate is getting way out of proportion.
Many of them who hated this phone never even see the phone in person.
i loathed the design when i saw the first press release fotos...
It looks way better if you hold it in your hands than compared to fotos.
Still could be better.
P.S Someone already reported the thread and asked for moving to Q&A ?
Please close this useless thread !
I came from a z3 and it's a nice big leap in performance. Fingerprint sensor is not in the prefect place but I don't have an issue using it, speakers just fine none of the issues done have. I'm not a fan of the shape out of a case, it's a stupid back and far too slippery, but add I use a case it's not really an issue.
Overall I'm happy.
Next time do a little research before investing so much in a phone. That's not sarcasm, it's common sense.
fingerprint is in my case at the right place. I'm left handed. Came from the Z5. Overall I love the phone. I only hate the backcover and its "feature". to spin it.

I am right handed, and I agree, just the right place. Could never understand people hating on the placement. It's not the same place as other phones. But I like it where it is. The speakers are amazing! And I love the screen. Overall a beautiful phone. The only reason I didn't keep it, is because I work out in the country where T-mobiles service is borderline. Having a phone with great reception is a must for me. And this phone is just average. Really loved everything else about it.

I'm able to hold the phone during hours without any pain, the curved back is a great improvement.
My speakers work without any distortion even at maximum level.
You have a dongle in the box the plug your headphones, 10 more cm at the end of your headphones jack doesn't matter.
FM radio is discontinued since a long time.
I've added a back screen protector, the phone doesn't spin anymore and isn't slippery neither.
Fingerprint scanner could have been placed a little bit higher but after a week of use, that's not a problem anymore.
Design is my taste.
But why did you buy the phone of you don't like it? Were you forced buy someone?

XZ2 is perfect and no issues or problems or something to complain at all
Agreed, those who complained about XZ2 either haven't use the phone and just listened to what haters said or have a faulty device.
I have no complaint about this phone. Perfectly placed fps for aesthetics and ergonomics, lack of 3.5 mm headphone jack is a pity but I can tolerate it, and the design and ergonomics are fantastic.
For me missing is only noice canceling feature in XZ2 or other new line of xperia

Rattle Noise from inside the Phone/Camera

Hey guys,
I own a Oppo Find X2 Pro since June. So far everything was fine with the phone.
But two weeks ago the phone started to have a clearly audible rattling from inside (seems to be somewhere near the camera-unit).
I read that some phones with OIS seem to have the problem with a "moving" Lens or sth similar.
My problem is that the rattling just started 2 weeks ago and in the months before there wasn't any sound. Also there seems to be no sound when I'm inside the camera app & at 5x zoom.
I sent the phone to the local repair service (in Germany) and they just sent it back with the comment "The housing tolerances you complain about (gap dimensions, play or slight rattling of the mechanical parts, functions that are too smooth-running/sluggish etc.) correspond to the manufacturer's specifications and therefore do not constitute a defect."
So now the question is, is somebody else facing the same problem? If yes, did you have contact to Oppo/the customer service & what was their response? Because in my opinion the rattle is way to loud and there shouldn't occur such things with a 1000+€ phone.

Most stablised cameras will do this these days. Its because they are suspended on a mechanism that isolates them from the phone chassis. Very similar to springs and shocks in your car.
Ok thanks for the answers guys.
When I open the camera app there is still a rattle without zoom. When I turn it into 5x zoom the rattle stops and doesn't come back again even when I go back to 1x (in this situation you can hear a very slight rattle only if you listen carefully in a silent enviroment).
But when I close the camera app or switch for example to the front camera and back to the rear, the loud rattle starts again.
What is worrying me is that there wasn't any rattle in the first months of usage and it only started a few weeks ago.
Even if the rattle is normal I don't think it should be that loud.
Mine rattles upon shaking no sound when simply opening the camera.

Because in my opinion the rattle is way to loud and there shouldn't occur such things with a 1000+€ phone.

i also have a question my find x2 pros ultra wide angle camera is not perfectly in the center
I found this thread as I have this same issue with my magic 4 pro. I emailed support and they claimed its normal.....
The reason the little sound is in there is due to safety measures made for the water resistance feature. We can assure you that is nothing wrong with your device and it is often found at Honor Magic4 Pro because of its spec.
