Uncommon Issue! Truly Bricked? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a sprint s5 that was water damaged and wont go past the boot screen. No matter what. I tried odin a stock ROM everything. Custom recovery, stock. Everything. I figure it's not fully bricked since it will let me into download mode. Insurance isn't an option because I was dumb enough not to take it since best buy changed their program. I just want to know if anyone has had this issue and if there's any way to get my phone back. Thanks in advance for any advise.

What is Odin saying when you try to flash stock things through it? Or is it flashing successfully and still giving you the download mode? Wonder if the water damage caused the volume down and home buttons to always be pressed. Try holding volume up during a boot up and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise, yes, a water damaged phone is a true brick.

Thank you for the response. I'm able to get into download mode fine and everything looks good in odin (successful). But once it reboots it just loops. Then if i try to go to recovery it does try and says it's going and just boot loops. When it first happened it was wigging out. Said no sim card and crazy notification lights. That all went away once it dried so i thought it may be able to be brought back to life. I'm just hoping someone knows if there's any fix at all because I'm desperate and really need my phone.

Well, from reading this, it seems like you are SOL. :/ Seems the water caused enough short circuiting to fry the main memory. I guess the next best thing to try is an Isopropyl alcohol soak for about 20 minutes. This will force out any residual water left inside. I used it on my brothers stick phone and recovered it for him. Take the battery out before you do this. Isopropyl alcohol is NOT conductive, but will dissolve any water. Make sure the its 91% or greater isoproply alcohol. When its soaking, give it a few taps to help drive out the air trapped inside. Next time you get a phone wet, do this immediately following. It works a charm. Rice does absolutely nothing in helping fix a water logged phone.

Ok, I will give this is shot! I'm probably going to take it to sprint and see if there's anything they can do. Thanks again bud.

if its bootlooping after an odin flash, it could be a bad download or an incompatible firmware version. What OS were you before the hardware freakout and what firmware version was it on? Also, what exactly were you flashing in odin? If youre able to get into download mode, it doesnt seem logical that it would be a water issue either. Also, have you tried different usb cables when flashing in odin? different .tar files? Making a chicken sacrifice to the android gods?

I dropped my NS to pool water. It stuck on Google logo but I can access to Bootloader

Hello,
I dropped my Nexus S to pool water then It didn't boot at all. I waited a day to dry it. Now It boots, but stucks on Google logo with unlocked sign.
Now, here is what I can do and what I can't do:
- It stucks at Google logo with unlocked sign. Button backlights doesn't turn on because of can't skip the Google logo.
- I can access to Bootloader.
- I can't access to Clockwork Recovery section (because when I try to enter to Recovery section from Bootloader, Google logo appears and stucks on there)
What should I do right now? I think memory is corrupted. Is there any way to format it from Bootloader?
Maybe I should relock the bootloader and flash the official 2.3.4 rom. How can I do it ?
Thank you guys.
It may be already too late, since you tried to turn it on. My guess is, that you have hardware damage. It might not be the memory. The boot loader is much simpler than the rest of the OS, so it might not yet hit the defective parts. If you are very lucky there is only still water left.
Here is what worked for me before (read: NO warranty):
First and most important in such cases: Don't try to turn it on. Take out the battery immediately and dry it as well as possible. It should be sealed, so a tissue or or t-shirt should do the job. Don't put it back in yet.
2nd: Rinse the phone with distilled water. In your pool is all kind of stuff from salts (sweat and so on) to chlorine and other stuff that cause corrosion and conduct electricity. That needs to get out of your phone ASAP.
3rd: Now it will need time to dry. That will take a lot time, because the water will be in the deepest cracks where there is no air circulation. I used ethanol (pure alcohol) before to wash out the water since it doesn't conduct electricity, mixes well with water and evaporates fairly fast. Note however, that it acts as an organic solvent, too, and might damage parts of the phone like the display or solve glued parts (again the display). However, this worked for me before on an mp3 player. There was a stain (as if water entered) on the display, but it worked perfectly still. I do not know whether to stain was caused by the alcohol.
Side note: Chemists use acetone to dry their glass stuffs, since it evaporates faster than you can pronounce it, but that stuff is aggressive and will likely damage plastic parts. Alcohol should be fairly safe.
4th: Now you can try putting it in the oven to speed up drying. Use only the air circulation mode. I used that method successfully before at 50°C for a few hours. However, you should measure with a thermometer first, whether your oven keeps the temperature regulated well enough. Not all ovens do.
If you are sure your phone is completely dry, put the battery in and turn try turning it on. If nothing happens leave it to dry some more, then try again.
Its already too late for this steps because a few days passed.
Thank you anyway. Someone else may encounter same thing.

As mentioned in other posts. You could put it in a sealed bag filled with rice.
But yeah :\ you turned on the device. I would say you would have to wait an additional 5-7 days to be careful (maybe im over exaggerating but 1 day is definitely not enough)
Have you tried connecting the phone to your computer? Does the computer recognize fastboot devices?
I would like to emphasize that acetone is definitely a bad choice. It is a solvent for some types of plastic. isopropanol should work as well as alcohol (ethanol) and it is much cheaper.
In case this ever happens to other people in the future. Don't ever use a hair dryer or "put it in the oven" to dry your phone, it's probably the worst thing you can do, the heat will no doubt fry out your circuitry. Instead, wipe down as much water as you can from the phone and stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice. This method had saved countless wet phones.

Actually hair drier works very well as long as you don't heat the phone pass what it can typically handle. Hair drying it actually speeds up the process of few days to few minutes.
I've done it with many phones and other electronic things. Just don't get it hot.

The bag of rice is the way to go. I dropped mine in a sink full of water an it wouldn't turn on. I put it in a bag of rice overnight an it worked the next day. No issues at all
Is it out-of-warranty if I relock the bootloader ?
I bought it from Bestbuy.com
I'm also not in USA. It will be really hard for me to request repair or replacement.
It's not necessarily too late. I put an iPod Nano through the washing machine and dryer once. I let it sit in a bag of rice for 3 days and it wouldn't turn on. I threw it in a drawer and forgot about it, then took it out 2 weeks later and it worked perfectly.
So put it in a bag of rice and let it sit inside in the sun so it gets a little warm but not hot. Try it periodically.
Well.. I've just tried connecting to a computer. It doesn't recognize fastboot ...
What now? Is it just a junk right now?

Read post #10.
A week has passed. I think it's already dried.
Now I concern about if it's out-of-warranty or not. Or any other repair way.
Ok. I tried to enter the Download Mode. Holding volume up and down button and plugged in. Windows recognized it.
And then tried to enter Bootloader again and YAY! Installed the 64bit drivers. Everything is ok
Now I flashed the Clockwork again, now I can access it. Wiped everything and phone boots now.
Touchscreen works like hell. Listened to a few MUSE songs, sound quality is perfect.
BUT! Wifi does not work When I try to enable it, gives me an error.
I will try to flash the latest Radio and try again.
I'm going to insert the SIM card now, hoping network and mobile data works.
Edit:
Mobile Network, Wifi, Bluetooth, none of them works..
I will flash the stock rom and relock the bootloader and send it to Bestbuy warranty.

They will most likely spot some water drops in it and will charge you for repair. If you're willing to wait you should give it another week in a bag of rice like the others have said, then try using it normally. I had the same problem with a nokia n95 and it had water signs on the display until I sold it for pieces, 1 year after the incident happend, so drying it completely is...I'd say impossible.
To note is that I was mastur***ing under the shower, hot water and some nice action on one of the biggest mobile displays at that time, don't try this at home guys
I tore it down and cleaned inside. Now Wifi and Bluetooth works.
But mobile network still doesn't work.
Everything works except the phone.. Touchscreen is blazingly sensitive. Speakers are in perfect condition. Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS everything works. All apps and games works perfectly, but it can not find any network at all.
ok i think this is what happened to my phone as well. i didnt water damage it at all i had to factory reset my device to get it to boot up and now i cant access any network besides wifi and t-mobiles standard network not 3g or 2g. i have experimented with different sim cards and nothing has helped so far..
same thing happened to my phone
how were you able to enter in "download mode"?
i can flash recovery, but when i try to boot in, it gets stuck on the google logo
edit: i was able to get into download mode, but how do I proceed to reinstall everything?
You should absolutely teardown your Nexus S and clean it.

You don't need to enter download mode.

[Q] Brick?

Hey folks, looking for a bit of help. So my wife washed my phone.(it didn't actually make it through the entire cycle because i realized what she did a minute or two too late. Regardless, the phone still got wet. I immediately pulled the battery along with SIM and SD.(I didn't try to power it on) I put the phone into a bag of rice and left it there for over 3 days. The phone seemed to be completely dried but i put it in the food dehydrator for good measure. The phone stayed in the dehydrator for 18+ hours. I reinserted the battery and plugged into AC and to my surprise I actually had a display. However, the phone gets to the AT&T screen and then reboots very near the end of the animation.(If left alone, the phone will boot loop indefinitely) I am able to boot into CWM recovery successfully. I tried flashing a ROM but the phone still boot loops. Flashing seems to work like it should, ie no errors, boot animation for ICS when flashing that. And yes, I've cleared cache/factory wipe/etc multiple times) I am unable to get into download via vol keys and usb cable to PC. I have a working jig that doesn't seem to invoke download mode either.(Plugging in the jig actually boots the phone into CWM recovery) The next step is to try forcing the phone into download via ADB.(downloading SDK onto new laptop now)
So after the above novel, my question is this: besides key combo, jig, and ADB is there an alternate way to force phone into download mode? A google search doesn't yield much...mostly articles ripped off of this site.
Is it possible to flash a .zip or script to force into download mode?
p.s. Odin does recognize the phone as a target when using the jig even though the phone is in recovery instead of DL mode.
Its worth mentioning that my lovely wife did spring for a brand new skyrocket the day my phone was washed meaning this phone is yet another to tinker with.
Wow what a great wife

You may have stuck volume buttons due to water or partial shorts on usb connectors. Try and get some isopro achohol and clean contacts and get compressed air spray to clear any debri
. Also take out sim card and clean it and the contacts
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I too considered that one of the buttons was stuck. However i am able to navigate within CWM recovery using the vol+ and the vol- buttons.
I actually did your other suggestion too.(not exactly but pretty close) I left that part out of my original post for the sake of brevity. Here's what I did:
I detached the the PCB from digitizer. I've got an electronics background so I happen to have quite a variety of small tools. One of which is a tiny medium/lite stiffness wire bristled brush.(It's like a tiny paint brush) I lightly brushed and cleaned all connections. This includes the connectable/disconnectable ribbon cables as well as any solder joint that I was able to access. Some ICs are "sealed" with epoxy so those connections couldn't be accessed.(Also seems like they stayed water proof) Basically I cleaned every place on the PCB that I saw irregularities. There were tiny spots of corrosive build up that looked as if they may be possibly shorting IC pins. Almost like "tin whiskers" except i used a magnifying lens and not a microscope.
I next used an air hose to remove debris I had just brushed off.(By the way, I like to stay away from canned air when using directly on components, it seems to leave a film. sometimes the un-evaporated contents also cause dust to cake)
I used a cap of isopropyl and some cotton swabs to clean the contacts further then let air dry. I wish I would have taken before and after pics because there was a huge difference. Anyways, this was actually done in between the bag of rice and dehydrator steps I mentioned earlier.

Yes sir. The original phone was bought out of contract at full price since I didn't want to wait for my upgrade to roll around. I was eligible for the contract discount this time.
Questions go in q&a
Here's the update:
I was able to force DL mode through ADB. Now that I can use Odin, I've realized that I'm not sure what i should flash. I'm thinking I'm going to try to completely return to stock. Simply flashing a ROM seems to work except for the boot loop. The boot loop happens regardless of the ROM i flash. The boot animation changes with different roms as expected. This leads me to believe the internal storage is indeed functional.
Should I try a kernel?
Bootloader?(is one even available?)
Stock Recovery?

[Q] S3 Took A Swim. How To Prep It for eBay Sale?

My S3 got dunked in the ocean. The screen does not light up, but the phone status light and speaker suggest that the phone is turning on.
I know that water logged S3s are sold on eBay. How do you suggest I wipe my personal data off of it, prior to selling it on eBay. Is it as simple as just removing the SIM card? If I need to remove more data, can I do it using ODIN considering I can't read the screen.
Thanks in advance for any help. And let the ridicule begin...

Before you do that might want to rinse with distilled water. Remover battery and thry and get the salt off which could short things. Then do rice for a few days.
Thanks for the suggestions. I had tried the rice idea (I hadn't thought of redunking it in distilled water), and it nice and dry but still not working. I was wondering how to scrub personal data off of it prior to selling it on eBay for parts. I saw other dunked S3s were selling, so I thought it was better than just throwing it out.
Since I've never used Odin, I don't know if it'd work for wiping all personal files off the unit. I'd imagine it might be particularly difficult to accomplish without the benefit of a screen to show the system status.
Just use Odin. Go to the development section and learn how to flash a stock image with it. You won't need a working phone screen to use Odin. Just make sure your phone can get into download mode. All the important stuff happens on your computer screen.
That's what I thought. I'll give it a try. I haven't used Odin, yet. Thanks for the response.
Some disassembly required remove the motherboard clean in distilled water then high purity rubbing alcohol then let dry you can accelerate using a hair drier to evaporate the alcohol. You can see if it will respond to adb to send there wipe command.

[Q] Water Damaged Nexus 5 Boot Loop Suggestions

Hi all,
First off I would like to thank anyone and everyone that reads this thread, it helps me out if you have any information that could help me out here.
About a week or so ago my girlfriend dropped her Nexus 5 in water, and removed it almost immediately then brought it to me. Sadly the damage was already done and the screen was black. I got the back off and got as much water out as I could shake gently, and the screen still had haptic feedback when I touched it, so I messaged it and it displayed the notification light. This led me to believe the battery was ok, so we left the back off and let it dry for a while, and over time the screen and sound came back. We placed the phone overnight in dry rice, and for the meantime we put her SIM in an old S2. The next morning there was obvious water damage on the screen but less than before, and everything seemed to be working fine, games ran, music played, messages came and went on Hangouts, and when we plugged it in to charge it worked like a charm, so we believed we had gotten lucky, put it back in the rice overnight again and the next day tried putting the SIM card back in the phone.
The Nexus at this point asked to restart and we obliged, but this is when the problem started. It would get to the Google boot screen, hang, then restart, over and over. I tried going into recovery and I could, but no further than that. I am not an expert so don't know what would cause this, but I am led to believe that the battery and everything else is all in working order otherwise it wouldn't have been working and charging while it was on. I wonder if maybe there is a separate part of the phone used for BIOS bootup and it got damaged? Any suggestions or ideas on how to fix the issue would be met with extreme gratitude. Thanks for reading all this.
TL;DR Phone was dropped in water, aired out and worked fine, restarted for SIM card and get stuck in endless boot loop.

Take the device apart, remove the motherboard. Get some rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush.
Remove any shields that can be taken off to expose more components. Then start scrubbing!!! Continue until you get all of the green/white corrosion. If there are any black scorch marks on the connections, take a eraser and it will remove the burn mark, then continue to clean with alcohol. Also the flex cable connections would need to be cleaned also.
The next step is up to you, if you feel comfortable with it. Make sure all plastic and rubber pieces are off the motherboard. Then stick it in the oven on 400F for 30 min to reflow some of the solder that may have gotten damaged.
Put back together, you may have to factory reset if the software got corrupted.
It is still highly possible to recover the device.
Good luck!

I wouldn't go so far as reflowing solder for a dry-out.
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000BXOGNI?tag=adapas02-20
can be attained at your local auto supply, simply disassemble the boards and give them a once-over spray and wipe-down. Reassemble, and then troubleshoot the bootloop, which may require a full stock flash. Good luck!

I am not reflowing to dry it, sometimes solder on the connections/components need to be reflowed when they got WD or the device will not function correctly.I have seen it more time that I can count.

There wouldn't be solder damage when OP acted almost immediately to dry it out. A cleaning, further drying should be all that's needed. One should NEVER turn on electronics until fully disassembled, cleaned and dried in any event.

The second the device hits air corrosion starts to build. Rice does nothing, it pulls a little bit of the water from the charge port and headset jack, basically what drips out. There is possibility that there is still water inside the device. He needs to open it up to scrub it down with a tooth brush and alcohol at least. The connections may break in time even after cleaning, that is why I suggest a reflow.

I don't disagree most of this up to the point of reflow, which should be an absolute, last-ditch exercise. If corrosion is a major concern, after cleaning with solvent, a Caig deoxit treatment would be my next advice, but I think reflow is best left to the experienced.

Thanks to both of you for your advice on this. I will go and get some of the cleaning spray you suggested and give all the components a good clean, and will look for any scorch marks that may have occured when it was damaged. I would try flashing the OS as well but I'm not entirely sure how to do that when the phone has not been set up for USB Debugging. I attempted to flash it after unlocking the bootloader, but that didn't seem to work either. I will report back when I have performed the steps and let you know if there has been any progress.
Thanks =)

Help Water Damaged S7 Stuck in Bootloop

Hi guys,
Hoping someone has an idea of what I can do or if I am out of luck.
Just got back from my honeymoon and my wife dropped her phone into the pool.
After she took it out it bootlooped until it died. I could not turn it off or any button combination to stop it.
After it died nothing would happen if I tried to turn it on or charge it. I tried the whole rice thing for coupe days and I am now in a situation where the phone only reacts when it is plugged into laptop or charger. However it only bootloops through the very first screen repeatedly. I tried getting into recovery but all that happened was recovery booting... in blue and now that bootloops. It seems I cannot get any further.
I have insurance and already received her new phone. Biggest issue is honeymoon photos that are on there that are not backed up. Are there any options that involve or don't involve payment (not important as photos are priceless) that I can do?
Please, any suggestions are highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi mate
If is not possible to get into recovery or download I think is going to be difficult to access the internal memory...
did you try to dry it out with something stronger like....
https://www.walmart.com/ip/DampRid-Hanging-Moisture-Absorber-3ct/15033113
maybe is still wet inside
I agree, a couple of days in rice for what is (almost in your case) a sealed waterproof phone likely is not enough time to dry it out
Problem being, you can not disconnect the battery, so damage can occur with the shorting of circuits if power is still getting to them
Considering you now know it is not waterproof anyway, I would remove the back, remove the battery, and leave it to dry out for another few days, somewhere warm
Remove S7 battery

Washing it with Isopropyl Alcohol is another method to remove water residue (This is what causes the problem mainly, the leftover residue stuck to the circuits inside the phone shorting them out)
If the people begins to thinking in deny buying unremovable bateries devices...
