I dropped my NS to pool water. It stuck on Google logo but I can access to Bootloader - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I dropped my Nexus S to pool water then It didn't boot at all. I waited a day to dry it. Now It boots, but stucks on Google logo with unlocked sign.
Now, here is what I can do and what I can't do:
- It stucks at Google logo with unlocked sign. Button backlights doesn't turn on because of can't skip the Google logo.
- I can access to Bootloader.
- I can't access to Clockwork Recovery section (because when I try to enter to Recovery section from Bootloader, Google logo appears and stucks on there)
What should I do right now? I think memory is corrupted. Is there any way to format it from Bootloader?
Maybe I should relock the bootloader and flash the official 2.3.4 rom. How can I do it ?
Thank you guys.

It may be already too late, since you tried to turn it on. My guess is, that you have hardware damage. It might not be the memory. The boot loader is much simpler than the rest of the OS, so it might not yet hit the defective parts. If you are very lucky there is only still water left.
Here is what worked for me before (read: NO warranty):
First and most important in such cases: Don't try to turn it on. Take out the battery immediately and dry it as well as possible. It should be sealed, so a tissue or or t-shirt should do the job. Don't put it back in yet.
2nd: Rinse the phone with distilled water. In your pool is all kind of stuff from salts (sweat and so on) to chlorine and other stuff that cause corrosion and conduct electricity. That needs to get out of your phone ASAP.
3rd: Now it will need time to dry. That will take a lot time, because the water will be in the deepest cracks where there is no air circulation. I used ethanol (pure alcohol) before to wash out the water since it doesn't conduct electricity, mixes well with water and evaporates fairly fast. Note however, that it acts as an organic solvent, too, and might damage parts of the phone like the display or solve glued parts (again the display). However, this worked for me before on an mp3 player. There was a stain (as if water entered) on the display, but it worked perfectly still. I do not know whether to stain was caused by the alcohol.
Side note: Chemists use acetone to dry their glass stuffs, since it evaporates faster than you can pronounce it, but that stuff is aggressive and will likely damage plastic parts. Alcohol should be fairly safe.
4th: Now you can try putting it in the oven to speed up drying. Use only the air circulation mode. I used that method successfully before at 50°C for a few hours. However, you should measure with a thermometer first, whether your oven keeps the temperature regulated well enough. Not all ovens do.
If you are sure your phone is completely dry, put the battery in and turn try turning it on. If nothing happens leave it to dry some more, then try again.

Its already too late for this steps because a few days passed.
Thank you anyway. Someone else may encounter same thing.

As mentioned in other posts. You could put it in a sealed bag filled with rice.
But yeah :\ you turned on the device. I would say you would have to wait an additional 5-7 days to be careful (maybe im over exaggerating but 1 day is definitely not enough)
Have you tried connecting the phone to your computer? Does the computer recognize fastboot devices?

I would like to emphasize that acetone is definitely a bad choice. It is a solvent for some types of plastic. isopropanol should work as well as alcohol (ethanol) and it is much cheaper.

In case this ever happens to other people in the future. Don't ever use a hair dryer or "put it in the oven" to dry your phone, it's probably the worst thing you can do, the heat will no doubt fry out your circuitry. Instead, wipe down as much water as you can from the phone and stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice. This method had saved countless wet phones.

Actually hair drier works very well as long as you don't heat the phone pass what it can typically handle. Hair drying it actually speeds up the process of few days to few minutes.
I've done it with many phones and other electronic things. Just don't get it hot.

The bag of rice is the way to go. I dropped mine in a sink full of water an it wouldn't turn on. I put it in a bag of rice overnight an it worked the next day. No issues at all

Is it out-of-warranty if I relock the bootloader ?
I bought it from Bestbuy.com
I'm also not in USA. It will be really hard for me to request repair or replacement.

It's not necessarily too late. I put an iPod Nano through the washing machine and dryer once. I let it sit in a bag of rice for 3 days and it wouldn't turn on. I threw it in a drawer and forgot about it, then took it out 2 weeks later and it worked perfectly.
So put it in a bag of rice and let it sit inside in the sun so it gets a little warm but not hot. Try it periodically.

Well.. I've just tried connecting to a computer. It doesn't recognize fastboot ...
What now? Is it just a junk right now?

Read post #10.

A week has passed. I think it's already dried.
Now I concern about if it's out-of-warranty or not. Or any other repair way.

Ok. I tried to enter the Download Mode. Holding volume up and down button and plugged in. Windows recognized it.
And then tried to enter Bootloader again and YAY! Installed the 64bit drivers. Everything is ok
Now I flashed the Clockwork again, now I can access it. Wiped everything and phone boots now.
Touchscreen works like hell. Listened to a few MUSE songs, sound quality is perfect.
BUT! Wifi does not work When I try to enable it, gives me an error.
I will try to flash the latest Radio and try again.
I'm going to insert the SIM card now, hoping network and mobile data works.
Edit:
Mobile Network, Wifi, Bluetooth, none of them works..
I will flash the stock rom and relock the bootloader and send it to Bestbuy warranty.

They will most likely spot some water drops in it and will charge you for repair. If you're willing to wait you should give it another week in a bag of rice like the others have said, then try using it normally. I had the same problem with a nokia n95 and it had water signs on the display until I sold it for pieces, 1 year after the incident happend, so drying it completely is...I'd say impossible.
To note is that I was mastur***ing under the shower, hot water and some nice action on one of the biggest mobile displays at that time, don't try this at home guys

I tore it down and cleaned inside. Now Wifi and Bluetooth works.
But mobile network still doesn't work.
Everything works except the phone.. Touchscreen is blazingly sensitive. Speakers are in perfect condition. Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS everything works. All apps and games works perfectly, but it can not find any network at all.

ok i think this is what happened to my phone as well. i didnt water damage it at all i had to factory reset my device to get it to boot up and now i cant access any network besides wifi and t-mobiles standard network not 3g or 2g. i have experimented with different sim cards and nothing has helped so far..

same thing happened to my phone
how were you able to enter in "download mode"?
i can flash recovery, but when i try to boot in, it gets stuck on the google logo
edit: i was able to get into download mode, but how do I proceed to reinstall everything?

You should absolutely teardown your Nexus S and clean it.

You don't need to enter download mode.

Shouldn't matter if it was on fastboot, that connects to a pc.. never saw one connect to rice yet. Seriously I would have turned it off being it was still wet. Just make sure it's dry before you start using it. Water bridges the wrong gap and ur phone will short something out. Wait a full 24 hours imo.

You should have powered off the phone completely, as soon as you took it out of the water, then dried it out as much as possible before powering on again. Having the phone on, while water is inside causes short circuits, which fry the phone.
I'd say, power off the phone completely (no Fast boot), and dry out the phone as much as you can, before powering it on again. Keep the phone in a bag of rice for a a day or 2 (or longer, if you can). Keeping it in a warm (but not hot) area might help drying, as well. Then see if it powers on. The phone might might keep working fine, or might work for a while and die. Short of taking the phone apart (not for everyone) and try to dry it out more, there isn't much else that can be done.
My wife dropped her iPhone 5 in the toilet about a month after it was released. She turned it off right after she got it out of the toilet, then took it to the Genius Bar. The Apple tech took the phone apart, and dried it best they could. She told my wife the phone might turn on, might not. Or might work for a while, then just stop working one day. No real rhyme or reason to it, and not much else you can do about it. Her phone has been working fine ever since.

Pretty sure he means the Sense option in Settings>Power>Fast boot; not the fastboot/adb interface.
Power off with Fast boot is not a true power off, but a deep sleep state. Might not make a huge difference. But if it were me, I would probably have turned off Fast boot in Settings before powering off and drying it.
Hmmm, what would happen if i would dry it when the phone was on.Would it be a 100 percent destroy?
No, it all depends on how much water got inside, and whether it got in a spot where it caused a short circuit. It might still be alright. But powering off completely is the safest way.

Never done this myself but saw the end result.. a guy I know propped up a hair dryer and turned it on low.. about 8-10 inches away ( adjust distance u want it warm, not burning hot.) Phone on in airplane mode. Don't need extra heat doing this. Ran hair dryer on and off for 3 days or so and the moisture slowly evaporated and display came back. This is just a suggestion, his went from horrible to very much tolerable.

A few people here have gotten moisture under the screen glass, and I think they were able to dry it our using various methods. Warm (but not hot) air is good, and also lots of air exchange to speed evaporation. So the previously recommended blow dryer on low would work nicely, as it fits both of those descriptions. Some folks have also recommended on top of your refrigerator (almost always warm), and in front of a fan might help too.
haha skorry i know thos is late but just found the post. I put my phone in to rice for 48 hours. Took it out and there was little water under display. Everything came out and phone was just washed. Htc one x was a good phone.

[Q] Water Damaged Nexus 5 Boot Loop Suggestions

Hi all,
First off I would like to thank anyone and everyone that reads this thread, it helps me out if you have any information that could help me out here.
About a week or so ago my girlfriend dropped her Nexus 5 in water, and removed it almost immediately then brought it to me. Sadly the damage was already done and the screen was black. I got the back off and got as much water out as I could shake gently, and the screen still had haptic feedback when I touched it, so I messaged it and it displayed the notification light. This led me to believe the battery was ok, so we left the back off and let it dry for a while, and over time the screen and sound came back. We placed the phone overnight in dry rice, and for the meantime we put her SIM in an old S2. The next morning there was obvious water damage on the screen but less than before, and everything seemed to be working fine, games ran, music played, messages came and went on Hangouts, and when we plugged it in to charge it worked like a charm, so we believed we had gotten lucky, put it back in the rice overnight again and the next day tried putting the SIM card back in the phone.
The Nexus at this point asked to restart and we obliged, but this is when the problem started. It would get to the Google boot screen, hang, then restart, over and over. I tried going into recovery and I could, but no further than that. I am not an expert so don't know what would cause this, but I am led to believe that the battery and everything else is all in working order otherwise it wouldn't have been working and charging while it was on. I wonder if maybe there is a separate part of the phone used for BIOS bootup and it got damaged? Any suggestions or ideas on how to fix the issue would be met with extreme gratitude. Thanks for reading all this.
TL;DR Phone was dropped in water, aired out and worked fine, restarted for SIM card and get stuck in endless boot loop.

Take the device apart, remove the motherboard. Get some rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush.
Remove any shields that can be taken off to expose more components. Then start scrubbing!!! Continue until you get all of the green/white corrosion. If there are any black scorch marks on the connections, take a eraser and it will remove the burn mark, then continue to clean with alcohol. Also the flex cable connections would need to be cleaned also.
The next step is up to you, if you feel comfortable with it. Make sure all plastic and rubber pieces are off the motherboard. Then stick it in the oven on 400F for 30 min to reflow some of the solder that may have gotten damaged.
Put back together, you may have to factory reset if the software got corrupted.
It is still highly possible to recover the device.
Good luck!

I wouldn't go so far as reflowing solder for a dry-out.
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000BXOGNI?tag=adapas02-20
can be attained at your local auto supply, simply disassemble the boards and give them a once-over spray and wipe-down. Reassemble, and then troubleshoot the bootloop, which may require a full stock flash. Good luck!

I am not reflowing to dry it, sometimes solder on the connections/components need to be reflowed when they got WD or the device will not function correctly.I have seen it more time that I can count.

There wouldn't be solder damage when OP acted almost immediately to dry it out. A cleaning, further drying should be all that's needed. One should NEVER turn on electronics until fully disassembled, cleaned and dried in any event.

The second the device hits air corrosion starts to build. Rice does nothing, it pulls a little bit of the water from the charge port and headset jack, basically what drips out. There is possibility that there is still water inside the device. He needs to open it up to scrub it down with a tooth brush and alcohol at least. The connections may break in time even after cleaning, that is why I suggest a reflow.

I don't disagree most of this up to the point of reflow, which should be an absolute, last-ditch exercise. If corrosion is a major concern, after cleaning with solvent, a Caig deoxit treatment would be my next advice, but I think reflow is best left to the experienced.

Thanks to both of you for your advice on this. I will go and get some of the cleaning spray you suggested and give all the components a good clean, and will look for any scorch marks that may have occured when it was damaged. I would try flashing the OS as well but I'm not entirely sure how to do that when the phone has not been set up for USB Debugging. I attempted to flash it after unlocking the bootloader, but that didn't seem to work either. I will report back when I have performed the steps and let you know if there has been any progress.
Thanks =)

[Q] Possible Dead Nexus 5?

My nexus 5 sat in some ice water for about 1-2 minutes straight. After drying the device with a cloth, I unlocked it and opened up the camera app to take a picture. then locked it again. The biggest mistake besides the water exposure was to turn it on right away. On these cases it's recommended to make sure it's well dried.. It was working but you probably produced a short inside and wont turn back on.
Put it in a bowl of Rice for one day or buy a Thirsty Bag to absorb the most moisture possible. Only luck and time can save it but no one can control them.

This was the first time I've dropped a phone in water, so I thought everything would be OK if I just dried it up. Hopefully some miracle will make it work. If it doesn't ... Guess I'm getting a red one.
Why do many people feel the need to mess with their phone while taking a dump? I mean are they that addicted that they can't put it down to perform regular bodily functions?

Mine phone got wet due to a loose water bottle in my backpack. But I do know what you're talking an about. I used to take dumps with my xperia ray until it nearly fell in the toilet. I think I'll try repairing my phone first before I get a new one since I've already opened the back anyway. If anyone knows any tips feel free to post. Help would be much appreciated.

[Q] Washing machine vs Nexus 5

So... my n5 was submerged into washing maching for at least 10-15 mins. and I'm using the traditional method, ( dip into rice bucket ) and leave it overnight, for the rice to absorb all the moisture and stuff. :crying:
I've remove the sim tray and cover n5 with rice.
I hope when I wake up later, it'll be able to work.
Is there any method I can restore the phone's files even if it is dead?
For example, using adb to control the phone?
Or better yet, if phone is able to boot, but screen is damaged, can it emulate the *image* to some software and we control from there or something?
Please give me all the possible solutions for getting the phone dry up or restore the files..
Update 1: sorry for not reading the main thread in General, was too furious.
When I wake up, tried to turn on, but fail. Then I went to remove the cover, there's water inside, then remove the screw and battery, there's water inside. After drying up everything, I put to rice again. Now I'm in office, hope my phone will wake up from deep sleep dead sleep later.
But still, any idea to recover the files inside the phone? I hope I don't damage the internal when I tried to turn on just now, how to check if battery or the motherboard is damaged?
Help please :crying:
up, updates.
Shouldn't really bump if it's been less than 24 hours. But, I'd leave it in the rice for two days. Overnight isn't long enough. Good luck!
If it starts up and you are unlocked and have a custom recovery you might be able to save files.

yes, its unlocked and have custom rec and custom ROM installed. I'm just hoping it could boot up or at least show some sign that its still half alive. I really need those files asap. I refuse to use my whatsapp in another phone. And it is my main source of connecting people other than calling.
I would use silica gel over rice

Sorry, but your device is now likely not to boot at all regardless what you try now.
Always , Always , Always open up the phone after a water immersion. Open , disassemble completely , rinse with IPA , then distilled water , then dry with a blow drier . Saved an iphone 3g , a samsung s2 , htc desire and desire x like this. My desire x ( after a 15 min dunk in the river ) still works - and it's been 2 years since then.
Rice doesn't work - at all in my experience. And just leaving the battery in for 24h means you have every chance to kill you phone.
Edit : data recovery will be IMO almost impossible without paying at the very least a few thousand dollars. If the EMMC is fried ad another order of magnitude to the bill.

Don't have and don't know where to get IPA at my country here, will search around later.
how in the world would it takes a few thousand dollars. thats insane!! damn.
Hopefully it'll show me some signal of the phone later when I got back from work. :fingers-crossed: But I have a bad feeling. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for your answer! Will note it down
Most of the time there's no chance of reading the NAND using the phone itself.
That means you need to desolder it ( extremely hard for Nexus 5 since it's epoxied as well , you need to mill the pcb from the back side until you reach the solder blobs ) , prototype a break-out board for it , interface it and read it. No one will give you any warranties for the success of the process.
A brand new NAND without glue , full datasheets and known protocol ? 300$ an hour with a 6 hour minimum.
Water damage + glue ? I never got a quote for that , but it's probably going to be 3000$ an hour - and it will take at least 2 hours just to mill the pcb off. Add another hour to clean it , 3+ hours to proto the board and either make it in-house or have it made at some pcb fab (though they won''t bill you for the waiting time if you are lucky ) , another hour to put the chip in , and countless hours to reverse engineer the protocol and get the data out - probably somewhat corrupted as well.
TLDR : unless you need 64bit variables for your income statement NOT worth it.
If the data stored on the phone is so damn important, why didn't you have a backup of it? Why was the only copy of this data on an easily lost, easily broken, unreliable storage medium in your pocket?
The problem with washing machines is you're not just dealing with water, you have some fairly serious soap too, and this is really what your concern is. Soap is alkaline and corrodes the traces inside the phone. You really need to immediately strip the phone down; rinse the phone thoroughly with distilled water and then dry well for a few days.
You should have just put it in the dryer after its wash

15 minutes , powered on at first in very conductive water ( soap+dirt+hot water) . It's too late for a rinse since I doubt there will be anything working in that phone anymore. Not to mention the mechanical action . If the battery wasn't in it might have survived , albeit with a lot of possible damage.
Ladies and gentleman. My phone survived.
Just plugged back everything, and it boots up. Thank god man. Now I jsut need to back up everything and extract the data out of it. Yay.
My screen has a new 3d effect tho. Water is inside, LOL. It has some nice blue color. Happy me. Woots.
Thank all of you guys for the possible solutions and feedback! Rock on!!

Considering it was in the washing machine, you didn't remove the battery, attempted to turn it on, then water came out when you finally opened it up..
You're lucky it has any sign of life at all.

Yes, I know right!
Took out from w.s, turn it on, screen flashes > dip phone to rice for 8 hours > tried turn it on, nothing happens > remove cover and screws and everything > dry up water > dip to rice for another sweet 15 hours ( working + part time studies ), now reached home, assemble everything, turn it on, and WALLA!
Backing up everything now. :fingers-crossed: :highfive:  :victory:

I am really happy for you Next time though, set up automated backup options so that you don't have to worry about the data inside the phone.

I'm amazed! I suppose it's possible the water was conductive enough to actually put the battery into protection right away

Yea. Nexus the magician! But all in all, speaker doesn't work, 3.5mm jack doesn't work. At least all my data are there!
Take a backup and buy a new phone. Lol.

Could still fail yet..

[HELP]Water got in the phone

So, it's me again.. As the title says, water somehow got in the phone. I can see some humidity on both cameras. I noticed this problem when I tried to make a call and the device couldn't detect the sim card. So, I opened the back only to find water in the SIM slot. The SIM is working fine now as i managed to dry it out but now I have two more problems.. A) For whatever reason the devices overheats by itself way too aggressively and B) the touch screen is really messed up..
Safe mode seems to ease the touchscreen issue a bit but the phone is still useless..
And yes, i have used rice to dry it..
It's fully stock btw except the unlocked bootloader..
If anyone knows what to do I will be really REALLY glad as I dont have a backup device right now..
Thanks in advance.

Is the water visible under the LCD? If not then you might be able to save it. If water got into the LCD backlight, like my previous phone, the damage would be irreversible.
Your best bet would be to take it to a technician and disassemble the phone. Maybe try to get warranty claim if still applicable. Overheating means the motherboard is shorted and the battery needs to be disconnected as soon as possible. Also, disassembly is recommended to clean up any water residue to prevent further corrosion.
Now, may I ask, how did the water got in there? Did the gasket fail or you've made some mistake like not putting on the back cover securely?
The problem was the plastic covering the sim and sd slots. As soon as pulled out the cover that plastic fell down on the floor like it was never glued whereas the other plastic for the second sim was just fine. I will get a technician to fix it in the next few days but until then its staying in rice 24/7. BTW the touch screen does have some problems and it keeps on pressing stuff by it self, although i can fix it for a few seconds by placing my hand all over the screen when active and then closing the screen. When I open it back up the problems are gone for about 10 seconds. Also the is a wierd mark on the bottom of the screen that seems like water but it doesnt affect visibility that much.
Quick update: So, water seems to be in there after all those days as the screen gets worse every day that passes. The wierd thing is that I downgraded to lollipop because I thought that the 5.0 display drivers might be better for such a screen and.. Well the screen doesnt respond at all to touches.. Tech support will see the phone today or tomorrow but I dont think its worth to repair. :/
Best way to "dry" the pone is to turn it off, remove the battery if possible, and leave the phone in a bowl with RICE (yes rice) in it, fully covering.
Rice will suck up all the humidity close.
