Just took delivery of my phone yesterday and love it. I want to use Titanium Backup as well as sshd on the device so I would like to root the device. I have a Titanium backup from my old S4 on the SD card now in the Moto but can't restore items and settings.
So.... after reading the post in the forum regarding "Read this before unlocking", I would like to at least have some burn-in time before unlocking the bootloader. So is there a way to root the device without a customer recovery? If not, it will be a bummer, but not a show stopper. One of the reasons I got the Moto was because Motorola provided a way to unlock the bootloader.
Thanks.
was also wondering if theres any ...
Negative sir. Need to unlock bootloader

I might add it is highly unlikely a way will be developed due to this device bring unlockable.

Well, this is a bummer. I just went to put my custom ringtones on and it was a pain in the arse. Eventually I will probably get pissed enough to just unlock and root.

I could put them in the ringtones folder on sdcard0 but the moto did not see them. I then used ES File explorer and set each file as a ringtone. Then when I went into the settings it prompted me if I wanted to use ES to set the ringtone.
There were some posts that suggested going into apps --> media settings and clearing the defaults, but this was grayed out for me.
In the end, something that seemed trivial was not so trivial.

It would be nice if a dev could find an exploit without unlocking so we can have root. Maybe it will happen, maybe not. Either way this belongs in the Q and A section and not general.

Id bet my left nut that we will not see this. Why? We have an unlocked bootloader. Doing so would be a massive waste of resources.

Yep, I agree. However I think if a simple exploit comes out for our version of pure android I think it would work. I really don't think it would take anyone long to come up with it if they know what they are doing. Since stagefright isn't patched on our devices you'd think someone would use that for root. Either way we have root available which is a lot more than other device owners can say
Almost willing to bet Kingo would work
What about a picture message sent from a rooted device, that uses stagefright to install the su binaries?
Doesn't stagefright put itself in the system? That may be a possibility.
Just talking on 2 hours sleep and the last of my coffee.
What about just a way to unlock the bootloader and root it without having to install a custom recovery?

Hey guys, recently upgrade from the D1 to the Tbolt. Rooted and everything was working great. I have to change numbers and need to take the phone back.. :/ I've read the How To and tried it. My phone checks the .zip but does nothing with it and returns to the recovery main menu. I have tried 3 different downloads and had no luck. Im not new to ADB or rooting (came into it around CM4)..
Any ideas?
Im using this method.

Checks it how? You dont have it named .zip.zip do you?
Couldn't you just change numbers through your provider's website? I was able to through Verizon's, free of charge.

When you first reboot the device, it runs an initial check it seems before asking you to write it... It does that, never asks and returns to the main menu. On a reboot nothing has changed, still the same Liquid Thundersense..

Actually, I'm guessing you might have it named wrong, too, since you put p05IMG in the name of your thread. It should be PG05IMG.
I'm running one right now to uninstall for a warranty issue myself.
I did the zip zip thing myself one time...about drove me nuts until I figured it out. Using windows 7 it showed as .zip, but when I finally clicked on properties I noticed it was actually named zip.zip

Linux is case sensitive, but the bootloader probably isn't Linux, and the OP also said it did the initial check - if it went that far, at least that part of the bootloader is recognizing the file.

Seeing how this particular hboot is written for android (linux) you should consider it as a linux hboot bootloader and treat everything as if it were case sensitive. If you don't problems like this can occur.
Everything they said about case sensitivity, no double .zip but also make sure there are no spaces in there. When I was rooting and upgrading back to release firmware I accidently got a space before the .zip and it took me a minute to see it.

The file I believe is case sensitive and needs to say PG05img
PG05IMG.zip is how mine is. Just put it on your SD card, turn off phone. Hold down volume down and power button at same time and the rest should be automatic. At least that is how I did it.

credits to this guide: http://www.zenilshroff.com/how-to-root-htc-sensation-android-2-3-gingerbread-smartphone/
1. First download the Gingerbreak.apk file.
2. Save on your computers desktop.
3. Connect the phone to your computer. (do not connect using htc sync)
4. Mount SD card as flash drive as you generally do for USB cable file transfers.
5. Copy the downloaded Gingerbread apk file to SD card root.
6. You should have any File Manager (e.g., Astro File Manager) on your phone. If not, download from Market. These are generally free apps.
7. Disconnect your phone from computer and launch File Manager. You will find in the menu of the phone.
8. Follow the onscreen instructions on File Manager to install APK to your phone from SD card root. You may also use the default application installer software to do this.
9. After installation completes, open the APK.
10. Press ‘root’ button. Simple, isn’t it?
11. The APK exploit will run for some time. Usually it runs for around 10 minutes. Your phone will be rebooted. In case it takes more than ten minutes for auto reboot, please reboot it yourself. Not to panic, this happens a lot of times.
12. Your device is now rooted. Congrats!
13. Make sure that SuperUser app is installed and is running. This is very important for you to enjoy the benefits of rooting.
In order to test if your phone has been successfully rooted, just click a screenshot of your phone. That should show that your phone has been rooted.
Yeah, but does it REALLY work?

Gingerbreak exploit is patched on the SGS II so doubt that will work. Also if phone needs to reboot, no way will root persist due to signed locked bootloader. Go ahead and try but we will need some L33t devs to break this phone.

It would be great if we could get this partial root. I personally don't mind not being able to flash custom ROM, but it is very important to me to be able to use some apps that require root permissions like adfree or titanium backup. From what I understand, this 'half-root' should not be very difficult to achieve cause it is not needed to mess with the bootloader for this purpose. The only requirement is to be able to uninstall htc sync for some time.
Here also a link detailing the differences between root levels and clarifying vocabulary. I am posting this cause it has been very useful for me to help understand, so it might also serves others..

So i finally got my replacement Droid maxx and got through rockmymoto and motowpnomo and decided to finish off with xposed and gravity box. So i installed the latest xposed framework app i could find and installed the actual framework. Then i couldn't get gravitybox to work so i decided to look through some files i had saved, and it turns out i had a different version of the xposed apk from before. So from root explorer, i installed my backup apk of xposed over the existing one. When i opened it, it said i had to install the framework again. so i did, presumably over the existing one. Now that i've rebooted, my phone just sticks at the red "eye" thing. And when it boots, it no longer plays the entire boot sound. It just says "DROI-----" instead of DROID and then all of the mechanical gear noises.
Someone please help me. Is there i a way to uninstall the framework?? i know how to use ADB, but my computer won't see my phone because it won't boot all the way. I really don't want to FXZ and lose everything!! I have important stuff on here
Thanks

1) OK, thanks for the tip on "keep data" I would much rather have to root and WP again, rather than lose all of my files and work.
2) I can't boot into recovery. When i try, it just starts normally. Which if RockMyMoto is like all of Jcases other root exploits, it removes the recovery.
3) isn't there a safe mode?? I wonder if i could boot into that and just delete xposed?
EDIT: Just looked up how to get into safe mode, and it won't boot. Still just the red "eye"

Alright, I just started trying to root my galaxy s3 a little while ago. I searched how to root it, and I got a video where I needed to unlock the bootloader. I tried unlocking it using the video's method, not realizing it was horribly out of date. So, the bootloader has been patched for that, I decided to try saferoot, and the kernel is patched for that. It recommended I use another method of rooting, but I don't know of any.
What should I try?

Motorola is pretty awesome about fixing phones with bad ota updates. Either they'll fix the phone by setting it completely back to stock or they'll get you a brand new one for free. And they're fast about it.
When your phone is all fixed, make sure there isn't any hiccups when your phone is updating. It should be smooth as butter. Sounds like a freak accident happened to your phone while updating. Just call them and tell them what happened. They'll be happy to fix everything and make it brand new. I've had to send in my phones more times than I can count.
Unless you're living with Santa in the North pole, I guarantee it won't take 40 days to get your phone back. I'm not even sure why you waited 3 weeks
Relax man, it'll be all good.

You must have an inside contact if you can guarantee that because I can guarantee you that isn't always the case. I've seen one replacement take 3 weeks because the replacement was shipped from China, where they ship most of their phones from. Maybe the North pole wouldn't require the phone sitting in a container somewhere waiting for customs clearance.

Sounds unlucky... the worst I've ever had is maybe a week. Reading through this thread though, it looks like the only option is to send it in. We live in the US, so you might be right about the phone repair taking longer since supriki is in Brazil. But really, I'm not seeing another way out of this.

I wish it was that simple. In order to restore a nandroid backup, you must have a custom recovery on your phone. In order to have a custom recovery, you must have the bootloader unlocked. In order to have the bootloader unlocked, you must have checked the option in the settings app to be able to unlock it. In order to check the option in the settings app, you must be able to boot your phone. Since you can't boot your phone correctly, you must put the stock rom onto it. In order to put the stock rom onto it, you must have your bootloader unlocked. And of course, to be able to unlock the bootloader, you must check the option in settings. Which requires your phone to boot. It won't boot, so you need to fix it. That requires an unlocked bootloader. Unlocked bootloader requires settings option to be checked. Option can't be checked because you can't boot. To boot, needs stock rom. To get stock rom, need unlocked bootloader.
Then it just repeats over and over. It goes full circle. There's not really a clear way out of this. The best option right now is to send your phone in as far as I know.
(Somebody let me know if I missed a step or something. Pretty sure this is right though.)

Yep, it's right. In short, the offices software can't be modified, however official the software may be, with a locked bootloader.
As I said before, it could be that all the phone needs to work is a full charge.
