Moto g XT1544 brick OTA HELPPP! - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK sorry. I will be blunt. when I was updating my MOTO g xt1544 by OTA from motorola my phone brick. my phone is 100% original no root no unlock. after that he just gets the boot screen. he no longer accepts the android 5.1.1 did not work hard reset. and its fastboot is from android 6.0, it's been three weeks and no one managed to help me nowhere. there came up to you guys!

As you yourself said on the other thread, you can't unlock the bootloader because it wasn't enabled. So use the warranty, because that's your only option.

Motorola is pretty awesome about fixing phones with bad ota updates. Either they'll fix the phone by setting it completely back to stock or they'll get you a brand new one for free. And they're fast about it.
When your phone is all fixed, make sure there isn't any hiccups when your phone is updating. It should be smooth as butter. Sounds like a freak accident happened to your phone while updating. Just call them and tell them what happened. They'll be happy to fix everything and make it brand new. I've had to send in my phones more times than I can count.
Unless you're living with Santa in the North pole, I guarantee it won't take 40 days to get your phone back. I'm not even sure why you waited 3 weeks
Relax man, it'll be all good.

no one know anything that i can still trying?

You must have an inside contact if you can guarantee that because I can guarantee you that isn't always the case. I've seen one replacement take 3 weeks because the replacement was shipped from China, where they ship most of their phones from. Maybe the North pole wouldn't require the phone sitting in a container somewhere waiting for customs clearance.

Sounds unlucky... the worst I've ever had is maybe a week. Reading through this thread though, it looks like the only option is to send it in. We live in the US, so you might be right about the phone repair taking longer since supriki is in Brazil. But really, I'm not seeing another way out of this.

I wish it was that simple. In order to restore a nandroid backup, you must have a custom recovery on your phone. In order to have a custom recovery, you must have the bootloader unlocked. In order to have the bootloader unlocked, you must have checked the option in the settings app to be able to unlock it. In order to check the option in the settings app, you must be able to boot your phone. Since you can't boot your phone correctly, you must put the stock rom onto it. In order to put the stock rom onto it, you must have your bootloader unlocked. And of course, to be able to unlock the bootloader, you must check the option in settings. Which requires your phone to boot. It won't boot, so you need to fix it. That requires an unlocked bootloader. Unlocked bootloader requires settings option to be checked. Option can't be checked because you can't boot. To boot, needs stock rom. To get stock rom, need unlocked bootloader.
Then it just repeats over and over. It goes full circle. There's not really a clear way out of this. The best option right now is to send your phone in as far as I know.
(Somebody let me know if I missed a step or something. Pretty sure this is right though.)

Yep, it's right. In short, the offices software can't be modified, however official the software may be, with a locked bootloader.
As I said before, it could be that all the phone needs to work is a full charge.

Omg no!!! Phone is self updating!!!

It is 1.85 I woke up and is updating?! it wont stop no matter what I try.
HELP!! STOP THESE MADNESS!!!
IT's at 50% now!!!
I had to Hard reset at 91% and restore factory settings.
It saved it at least... but have to redo all the phone again...
Now I'm not sure why my phone hour is not right and I can't fix this.
Anyways I had no choice, I didn't had my phone rooted yet.
yeah thats the reason i just rooted and unlocked the bootloader, i got sick of that and understood that it would just update if i didnt do anything. Spend a couple of hours and do it and load Viper and never worry again. If you already have to set up your phone again, do it on a nice rom

Totally different things .... Sim unlock and bl unlock are different...with 1.85 go find one of the 1.85 root methods follow instructions root it and than look the bl unlock thread in our development section and get your bootloader unlocked .. than download goo manager and flash twrp

Again NO need to get a new similar actually it will do nothing bbut waste your earned money
Ok I'll admit it...
I snuck behind enemy lines today and pushed the big red update button today.
I was jealous of those of you with 1.85. I'm sorry
But 1.85 can be rooted, or did that get patched up as well. Thought only 2.20 was not root-able.
Anybody still on 1.73 I recommend updating to 1.85.....had some fixes and its perfectly safe for rooting and unlocking

Lost my chance... now I have to wait for the 2.20 exploit.
Oh well...
I am dumb doing all these things on my own.
I have no idea how I was able to do it when I had my HTC Tilt.
It kept popping the update add and today it said after 8 hours it will update automatically.
i'm pretty sure the ota doesn't force itself.
why didn't you go ahead and root/unlock? it only takes a few minutes to root, unlock, recovery, rom.
If you can't do one clicks on your own...umm.... I.guess 2.20 is the rom for you

At the moment I started working on this, my connection got terrible bad and lost it.
I was also having trouble with the clock settings and every time I changed it it asked me about the update.
And then it told me that next time I pospone it it will force to update.
So... no internet yet and I was pissed off because the date settings where not correct and trying to fix it... It began to update in a black screen and a harddisk and I couldn't do anything at this point.
I thought about forcing it off somehow but I didn't do it in case it could screw all up badly so I had no other choice.
Anyways... I can wait until 2.20, The programers always find their ways to exploits so I'm sure it will happen soon

Root and unlock the bootloader while you still can. Then you can flash whatever stock or custom ROMs you want. You'll always be ahead of the curve compared to those unrooted/locked, and never be jealous again. There are stock and custom ROMs already based on 2.40 and 2.41 now.

RAZR HD Maxx rootability

Just replaced Samsung Galaxy Nexus with this razor. Should be a step up right? Apparently I'm spoiled. Wife has the bionic so I'm familiar with the basic process.
Doing research, resetting the device like 15 times and reading a ton of threads in the last couple days, it looks like I have the phone itself actually rooted however I'm not able to fully install safe strap.
What's interesting to me is that I can use programs that require root access far as I can tell with no issue, root checker shows root is available as well. Trying to reboot into recovery though does not give me the safety strap splash screen to choose any kind of recovery option. Just rolls into DROID...
Is this pretty normal if the previous owner accepted the OTA update to take me to 9.18.79? Are we stuck?
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
Did you open safestrap and install recovery?
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk 4
Sure did. Says installed and from all the videos I've seen explaining the install/usage and my wife phone installation, I'm quite sure it's installed.
I've tried multiple versions just to be sure clearing data and uninstalling previous versions etc.
At this point I'm just not sure if this is normal or not because of the OTA version that's on here.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
Thinking that the safe strap process should be the same but realized that there is a set of HD XT926 forums I should probably be posting in. Didn't realize the differences.

Thanks anyways.

Just wondering, it wasn't clear, are you on the 9.18.79 build or not sure? A screen shot of your "about phone" screen could tell unless someone rolled back. Only reason I ask is, safest rap is great if there are no options but unlocked is where the real profit is.

yep, that's the version I'm at. I think I mentioned that in the original post. From everything I'm reading I should be able to install and run safe strap with no issues but it just doesn't ever bring up the menu. At this point I'm looking for alternatives I guess.

are you sure its not already unlocked?
if you havent already, i would flash back to clean stock, not just wipe/"reset", and try again. wiping wont get rid of or fix anything in the system directory.
First off don't attempt to flash any aftermarket recovery if your BL is locked, you might run into issues. Second, SafeStrap doesn't replace your stock recovery because you can't replace your stock recovery if you have a locked BL. To get into SS, just boot your phone normally. Once the phone boots, you'll get the SS screen that allows you to go into SS recovery or boot into OS normally. Once in SS, then you can start running backups, flashing, etc.
i didnt see anyone suggest he flash a stock recovery.
he got the phone used, maybe its already unlocked, i didnt see that possibility confirmed or denied.

When you say UNLOCKED, are you referring to the Boot Loader? If so, I do not believe that it is, just Root at this time.

100% agree with this, should be that simple. Happens properly on the Mrs Bionic so I'm familiar with that process. This phone doesn't produce the menu no matter what version of Safe Strap is installed (tried multiple).

Planning to go back to stock stock, beyond the wipe. I believe a previous poster mentioned that the standard wipe doesn't remove root. A fresh start may be my next step. Hoping the 1.32 Droid Razr Utility by Mattlgrof http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474393 will do that for me.

just boot into the bootloader screen (vol+power) and see if it says device locked or unlocked (may have to choose "fastboot", to see it i dont recall)
yes Matts utility will clean the phone for you, i updated it to 1.3+ for him
Used the utility to wipe the phone and reflash back to stock, at least that version. All seems good however moto chopper doesn't fully install root with superuser. I get the typical su binary needs to be installed and that fails.I did tried to run the updates in Play Store that was available as well as clearing data etc with no luck. I think the last time that I was able to successfully Foot I used a different Root program, razor maybe?

read the post from the utility, the root in the utility is not the one you need to use. the correct one is in the post. (it actually says it in the command window of the tool too)

np, i did update it a few times, but working 6 days a week, i dont feel like messing with the root right now.
So I've just done option 1 with the factory reset, then ran moto chopper 1.32 and have good root. Confirmed. Ver. 9.20.1
Safe strap seems to be the only issue I keep having. The menu just simply doesn't come up while booting. Doesn't matter if the phone is completely shut off and turned on or rebooted.

Grns did mention that he might try flashing PhilZ recovery, that's why I said what I did. His OP also mentioned that the previous owner took the latest OTA, so it's highly probably that he's locked up (though, not 100% certain). I'm only suggesting these things in advance, so that he doesn't run into problems.
As for your SS issues, that's kind of weird. You should get the options as soon as the phone boots up.

[Q] bricked and terrified 4.3

okay i upgraded to 4.3 OTA and tried to revert back and soft bricked my phone. I still have access to download mode and the stock recovery. I know now that i can not revert but is there any way of getting it back to 4.3 so i can have a phone again?
thanks for the future help.
This is similar what happened to me. I have never done anything with my phone as far as rooting and I tried reverting to stock 4.1.2. In Odin I kept getting the "Nand Start! Fail (Auth)" because of the locked bootloader I guess. I flashed some other firmware that was unofficial with the locked bootloader and now I get the "unauthorized software detected" and I cant do anything but enter Odin download mode. What should I do?
that is exactly what is happing to me. same error and all.
Once you took the OTA 4.3 you got locked in. No way of going back.

I dont want to go back just get rid of the soft brick so i can use it
im having the same problem and need to get it fixed please help anyone???!!!! im leaving for florida in two days and have nothing else. HELP!!!!
If you took the OTA and tried to flash 4.1.2 Odin or unlock bootloader you are Hard bricked , no method or recovering it yet.
If you have stock recovery and download mode , only hope is wait for 4.3 .tar file
Theres no custom recovery I can flash and flash some other software or something?

Nope , once you take 4.3 OTA you done , no flashing anything. And once you try to flash recovery or revert to older software you are bricked.

Not to mention it is basically fraud, and is the main reason Verizon decided to start locking down phones in the first place.
I understand everyone is taking risks when flashing custom, and flashes can go wrong even when you do everything right, but there is VERY little chance of bricking your phone if you take your time and do a bit of research before you hit any buttons. And if you do manage to brick your phone, man up and pay for a new phone or pay for it to be fixed. Otherwise stop treating your $600 piece of technology like a toy.

The first time I ever rooted, I was worried about bricking. So i read everything I could find relevant.
Why in the world anyone would flash without reading is beyond me. Every single thread in Verizon Galaxy S3 at least mentions, if not totally devoted, to how bad 4.3 is and if you flash something on it you will brick.
I just don't get it.

Sounds like the old Chinese guy knew what he was doing.
You don't mention that YOU returned it to stock, you just said it was stock and unrooted. If it is exactly the way he gave it to you I would fastboot flash the stock 4.4.2 images from google and see what that does for you. You could simply have a corrupted file somewhere.

Yes when he sold it to me it was stock. I haven't returned it to stock, ive rooted it and tried diff rom/basebad combos and still nothing. Theres also a weird persistent notification that i cant swipe away that says Nework (ROGERS) Unvailable....even when i reset and try a Telus sim! Is there an easier way to flash stock besides fastboot? I am pretty new to this gig and am not too comfortable with fastboot

This being a Nexus you have little or no risk of doing damage by playing around. My original Droid X was always threatening to self destruct if you messed up the tiniest little step. Spending a couple hours learning about and installing Fastboot and ADB will be the best investment you can make. Once you learn to use them the fear of messing something up is gone. You can flash roms at will without worry as you can always return to stock and start over.
Flash a Google stock image

Just follow method one of this. It's easy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47156064
PS, why did you buy a device thinking you could fix it of you don't know fastboot commands

Oh thats perfect bro thanks, nice and straightforward. Will see how this goes after school. I just htought it was maybe a radio issue or rom issue so i thought i could flash around and fix it. Also it was only 70 bucks and in mint condition aside from this problem so I didn't think it was a bad deal
Sounds like the ESN/IMEI is bad.
Hard to fix ATM.

Oh really?how does that happen!? The imei isn't blacklisted or anything and shows up as a registered imei. I tried flashing stock image and still no dice! Looks like I'm doomed. Any other suggestions?
That usually happens when the following steps occur.
The original owner unlocked bootloader.
They put twrp on it and did a full backup including ESN
The device developed a fault so they RMA'd it.
They restored the backup from the faulty device into the new one.
The ESN is device specific and by restoring it onto a different device you end up with not being able to connect to a network.
You can check by going into the about phone menu in the settings. If it displays your imei then I don't think this is your problem.
Have you tried popping the back cover off and checking the antennae contacts

The good news is the parts are worth more than the $70 you paid for it. Find someone with a busted screen and sell it.

That's a good idea.
Thanks for the advice. Ended up selling it this morning as is to an eager repair junkie. Btw my imei was showing up and the antennas were all in place so still a mystery what was up with it!

Anyone on VZW still waiting on 7.1.2?

Stock, uprooted, locked bootloader... Through March got my OTA updates like clockwork. Nothing since. VZW support said they have been delaying the releases in batches but it has been a long time.

At this point I'd just sideload it.

Can I sideload if my bootloader is locked? I can't seem to find a clear answer on that. I can't unlock because the mobile device management we use for work checks for it. This is my first stock and locked device since I took my Droid Charge out of the box years ago so I don't know what I can and can't do. Thanks!

Yes you can sideload the full OTA. Instructions and files are here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota Just make sure you download the correct one. I believe there are 3 different ones, Verizon, Google and Dutch or German. It's really the only thing you can do with a locked bootloader other than factory reset. Well one other thing you can do is unlock the bootloader, install what you want, then relock it. Not sure though if that will trigger a warning from corporate so I'd avoid that route.

Finally got around to sideloading the update. Worked like a charm. I missed the long boot "oh no I'm bootlooped.. Oh wait I'm not" feeling from my crack flashing days haha.
Thanks!
