Alright, I just started trying to root my galaxy s3 a little while ago. I searched how to root it, and I got a video where I needed to unlock the bootloader. I tried unlocking it using the video's method, not realizing it was horribly out of date. So, the bootloader has been patched for that, I decided to try saferoot, and the kernel is patched for that. It recommended I use another method of rooting, but I don't know of any.
What should I try?

A friend of mine is looking to me to root his Verizon S3 and I just wanted to double check that the towelroot method has worked for it and is actually just as easy as downloading the apk and then running it? I'm sorry if I appear stupid but it has never been that simple on my HTC's lol. Thanks for your time.

Thanks. Will probably give it a shot tonight. Does anyone know if this unlocks the bootloader or just roots (this from what I gather) and also does it wipe anything?

It worked for a day or so then said it didn't have root, he rebooted and ran towelroot again and appeared to root again. Problem I'm wondering about is the message I get when I open superuser: "Samsung Knox has been detected. This might limit root capabilities and cause pop ups. Try to disable Knox?"

I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The first time I rooted for the long term (with saferoot on ML1) I BELIEVE that I disabled it and it was all good. I have been temporarily rooted and not disabled it and still not run into problems though

I am scared that i know the answer to this but thought i would ask. I was rooted, unlocked the bootloader the whole bit and was running Jellywiz for a while. I decided to go back to stock via restore. My phone started downloading the latest verizon update and without thinking i agreed to it. I lost root and was wondering if there is a easy way to get it back without physically going through the whole rooting process again? i tried installing supersu and doing the update but that did not work. Thanks in advance
You could try Odin-ing a image thats already rooted but honestly to be safe I'd just go through the steps again. I have done that myself once (not on a samsung phone) . Even though it sucks to lose your setup I'd rather be careful then risk a brick. Just my .02 cents though.

Hello,
Need some help here... I am a newbie... I had rooted my phone to unlock and use data while traveling in Europe with the below instructions... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 .... worked great!
I installed VRBLK3 (last update) before I received the VRBMF1 OTA update last night which automatically updated my phone. I am faced with error saying Unauthorized Software on phone, goto Verizon.
I am unable to boot into Odin Recovery Mode, but I can boot into Odin mode. I am unable to perform any steps to flash my phone again and then load the latest update manually via Odin.
What am I missing here? Thoughts? Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason
Your bootloader wasn't unlocked correctly and the update sure did mess up it up as it updated while you are rooted.
You can odin it just takes time as soon pull out the battery as soon as you out it in hold power, volume up and home. You should get into odin so you can flash a stock image.

I have the same problem. I haven't run the update, but it has downloaded. Either with buttons or through rommanager, I can't get into recovery mode (I have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed) . I keep deferring the update.
What are the steps to flash a stock image?

Use the ODIN program and then download the stock image from rootzwiki (or here at XDA if its posted)
Plug your phone into the USB port of a computer and then run the ODIN program. Then post the entire .tar package in the PDA section after your phone gets recognized (you'll need to boot into download mode, which is volume down+power+home).
Read the guide over at XDA for a better explanation. Here's the URL.

I can get into Odin Download Mode, but I can't get into Odin Recovery (it gives me error in upper left corner ... SECURE FAIL: KERNEL).
When I get into Odin Download Mode and I hook it up to my laptop, it doesn't recognize the device even though I have the drivers loaded on my laptop.
Thoughts?
It should still work. Check the USB drivers in device manager.

OK, so I've just been deferring the update. Just wanted to know if there is a way to get the update without having to unroot my phone first. I'd really rather not run through the motions of doing the whole unroot-reroot process but this update is bugging me.

if you can get into odin you should be ok. just flash the stock image and use the one-click method. but be careful i am reading about the one click casual method causing hard bricks on some devices.

That's interesting. The same exact thing happened to me. If you want root, then root. Preexisting root tools still work on the latest VRBMF1 ota. You can check if you're still rooted by downloading Root Checker from the store.

Seriously use this tool. Works great!
First root your device.
- There are many ways to root. But i used this.
Then install RegionLockAway-v1.3.apk. ( This app needs root access )
After that remove region lock with RegionLockAway application..
I just found the way. Please thanks to original authors.
** Checked with 4 i337 devices.. All unlocked perfectly..
If you are on mk2 lease try this..
Thank you
Just tried with an MF3 SGH-I337. The app said it looks like the unlock was successful, then I rebooted with a T-Mobile sim inserted.
It never asked for an unlock code upon boot with the new sim... Thought that was a good sign...
I have full bars of service signal from T-Mobile, but no data. Checked APN settings, and the phone pulled the correct settings from the network, but won't connect to data, even edge.
Tried to make a call, emergency calls only prompt comes up. Only option is to click OK.
Did I do everything right?

I know my phone is running on MK2, it took a lot of work to odin to stock MF3, re-root, and upgrade. I know i ran the apk in the first post of this thread and it gave a success message and my LTE is working fine. I don't have a sim card to test the unlock with. I'm not trolling - trying to get people bricked. If you are worried, don't take my word for it - don't run the patch - I don't care.

very easy to use, just use kingo roof and install regionlockaway and your good to go
I'm reading that jortex's root also works for this unlock. I'll test this tonight. Kingo hasn't earned my trust without releasing their source code.
Edit: Removed root previously applied via SafeRoot. Re-rooted with jortex's method. Ran region lock away. Rebooted with T-Mobile sim inserted. Emergency calls only prompt. Stock MF3 ROM. Too bad. I'm not restoring to complete stock with odin just yet. Maybe some other time.

Only if your bootloader is unlocked will you get root on KK.
There is no known exploit to gain root on locked bootloader devices with KK. KK patched a lot of security holes and exploits, including the Sqlite tethering hack.
I wouldn't hold my breath on getting root and there is no way to preserve root across the OTA. The last root exploit found (the safe patch or whatever it was called) will break the OTA update, requiring you to flash back to a stock image of whatever version you were running at the time (9.18 or 9.30).
Could you please give a link for root package for unlocked BL? I've got such a lucky phone

Until there is root, I won't take the update. If that means 4.1.2 forever, so be it.
The only thing that grinds my @$$ is that I bought the phone a year into its life and took one too many OTAs without unlocking the bootloader first. And from what I understand, there's no turning back.
I do have a Motorola factory cable, though. It saved me a couple of times with my Droid X2. I haven't seen anything about using it on the RAZR HD -- do you know if it's usable for this phone?

Yeah, unfortunately that's exactly where I was going. I kind of figured if it would someone would have mentioned it by now. But I've never seen it mentioned in the RAZR forums and had to wonder.
Ok, so this is my first device with a locked boot loader, and the concept of flash fire is completely foreign to me. I couldn't find a good guide that answered my question, so here goes nothing...
I was able to root of1 using king root. Got super su working, and installed flash fire. Now, my question is am I able to flash a Rom if it's based on OE1?

Yea, that was my fear too.
But from what I think I know about flashfire, it doesn't touch the bootloader, just the /system partition.
I also think that all the brick-related warnings were if you tried to flash an earlier build through odin/download mode. If Flashfire is just flashing a ROM on /system I would think there would be no brick issues.
Perhaps this is a question better aimed at a developer, as I'm only guessing here.
But I GUESS, going from OF1 to OE2 would be substantially similar as going from OE2 to OC3. Right?
Can anyone else confirm that they have OF1 and are able to root?
...or, is anyone else still on OF1?

Kingsroot doesn't support 920V.
seriously guys.. i don't think Vzw and AT&T s6 community would keep something like rooting OF1 an unannounced story.
I used Kingroot within the last 1-2 weeks to get root on my S6 running OF1. I then got SuperSU up and running, verified with root checker, Terminal Emulator, and have been using Titanium Backup to freeze/delete tons of bloatware.
There is a dev (elliwigy) willing to build a ROM based on OF1, but is looking for verification of root from other users first. Thread here If you have OF1 and are able to root please let me know and comment in the thread too.
So... Nobody else running OF1, huh?

I think it's because people don't want to trip Knox which is why no one is responding. When King Root was released, people stayed away from it mostly because that reason.
As far as I can tell, knox has not been tripped.
