Only if your bootloader is unlocked will you get root on KK.
There is no known exploit to gain root on locked bootloader devices with KK. KK patched a lot of security holes and exploits, including the Sqlite tethering hack.
I wouldn't hold my breath on getting root and there is no way to preserve root across the OTA. The last root exploit found (the safe patch or whatever it was called) will break the OTA update, requiring you to flash back to a stock image of whatever version you were running at the time (9.18 or 9.30).

Until there is root, I won't take the update. If that means 4.1.2 forever, so be it.
The only thing that grinds my @$$ is that I bought the phone a year into its life and took one too many OTAs without unlocking the bootloader first. And from what I understand, there's no turning back.
I do have a Motorola factory cable, though. It saved me a couple of times with my Droid X2. I haven't seen anything about using it on the RAZR HD -- do you know if it's usable for this phone?

i have a factory adapter, it does work on this phone.
im curious as to why you asked about it?

Yeah, unfortunately that's exactly where I was going. I kind of figured if it would someone would have mentioned it by now. But I've never seen it mentioned in the RAZR forums and had to wonder.

I just got an S3 from an upgrade. Should I root it (this isnt my first android phone i know what I will be getting into) with the jelly bean update on the rise? If I do root when the update comes out will it matter if I am rooted/ bootloader unlocked, or will the update just erase all the root.
Back when I had my Droid Bionic it DID matter if we where rooted when an update rolled around.
If is the same old story. If you root, you can customize to your heart's content and have access to new things sooner. However, you void your warranty and can't take OTAs if you root. I wouldn't chance waiting to do it later of you are going to do it, chances are Verizon will close the exploit that is currently used and you may never get the access that you have the opportunity to have right now.

All i used root for on my Bionic was to block ads and acess to more of the phones files. The bootlader was still locked so that is all we could do. On my Droid Eris I changed cpu speeds a ton of files. So I am debating.
Is there a way to get back to stock similar to FXZ?
Root. It adds so much more fun to owning the phone, and the variety in ROM's are great for the S3.
You can root and leave it at that to block ads and use wireless hotspot. Two main reasons I root initially. Then I get bored and go the custom roms route.

Why not? this is an easy decision, root it and play with it, for some reason you don't like it, you can go back to factory stock easily. By the way root will not void warranty, unlock will, but you can alway relock or unroot. So there you have it. It's safe, easy and reverable. Go for it!
If you rooted, you still can take the OTA upgrade no problem, just download and install Voodoo OTA root keeper, save root, take the OTA then restore root (take 1min to do so). Now if you unlock, you won't able to take OTA, however the main reason why you unlocked is you want to run custom rom, so if you are using custom rom then you don't care about OTA. Once the new OTA comes out, you just wait a bit and developers here will create a custom rom for the new release OTA.

jellywiz and it's great! It is completely stock. AND ALL of the apps like media hub work. I tired cm 10 and didn't like it. Thats what I wanted to know, if it is easy to return to stock. Ill root when i get back to my dorms. I forgot my cord and im in class
If for wifi tether alone rooting is always worth it as far as I am concerned. That is one of the best features out there, then again I guess you may be able to do that for free anyway after that fcc thing
I forgot about that is the official google tether apk in the play store yet?
You can delete failbook, that is REASON enough to root.

I've rooted and unrooted my phone a few times for specific needs, but will not unlock the bootloader until the weird IMEI issue is clearly found (and made avoidable).
So, will just wait for the official JellyBean OTA update.

There're 2 Verizon stock Jelly Bean leaks, I'm running it and so forth pretty smooth. This is pure stock, you're going to lose root if you flash them.

True, but I'm banking on a forthcoming method to obtain root after the OTA hits. Maybe somehow backlevel to a stock ICS build and root from there, etc. Or, maybe I'll never get root back after the OTA hits. Guess we'll see.

Alright guys... Been reading a bunch on the rooting process for maxx HD. I have a few questions that are probably obvious but coming from HTC this device is totally different.
I am currently on stock 4.1.1 not rooted 926 non Dev. Phone came like this I didn't update. Now I have the 4.1.2 update waiting to install but I keep pushing it off because I would like to keep the ability to root.
Am I correct in assuming that if I take the new update it will eliminate the possibility of getting root until a new method is discovered?
Is it true that unlocking the boot loader has some negatives?
What would you recommend I do to keep my options open?

Unlocking boot loader voids your warranty. That's the only con in my book. The pro is device is rootable for life, without having to wait for hackers to find exploits.
If you want to keep your root (4.1.1 to 4.1.2) without unlocking boot loader, you should look into Voodoo OTA keeper in the store. It essentially lets you do the OTA update and keep your root.

It sounds to me as if the issue isn't so much the need for a new root method, but simply a new way to get the phone back to 4.04 so that it can be rooted using the same method. The utility everyone has been using to go back to 4.04 supposedly won't work after the update.

OK, so if i use the utility to downgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4, then root and follow the process to protect root... would I need to upgrade back to 4.1.1 first and then to 4.1.2? Thanks again.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I _am_ rooted with voodoo. Now here comes 4.1.2 ota. I postponed to temp unroot with voodoo, but want to make sure I will actually still have root permissions after taking the update. I have read/searched a ton (kw: OTA RAZR HD, etc.) but the only things I think I understand so far are ...

2. If you have seriously tweaked your phone, say by deleting a bunch of verizonware, you may get an error saying you can't upgrade.

Yes that is the feeling I am getting as well. Gotta be on stock 4.1.1 (with all apps/bloat installed). Since the 4.1.2 OTA is out now, will our phones find the 4.1.1 update from 4.0.4?
I don't really care about going back to ICS, but I just don't want to take the update and paint myself in the corner. Likewise, I don't want to downgrade/root/protect and then attempt to upgrade but get stuck.
The other thing to keep in mind is without an unlocked bootloader, kernel controls, radios, etc can't be tweaked or changed anyway. I may just keep this thing stock. Other than debloating/tethering, it is starting to seem like rooting with a locked bootloader isn't gaining you much.
I'll probably just keep lurking until I understand the device better. Motorola really seems like they don't want to have this device unlocked.

which confirms no back to ICS (so use his win RAZR HD util 1.10 to revert and root first followed by voodoo install & temp unroot) then OTA 4.1.2, but only if 100% stock ROM, so best to do right after rooting and OTA to JB.
So I took the update to 4.1.2, and it worked! And I still have root!! I did temp unroot first, checking with root checker basic. My only fear was I had uninstalled some bloat: NFL, Audible, slacker, etc., but maybe o could've uninstalled those without tibu? (I know, freeze or move, I promise next time I will, but I lucked out this time! Thx moto/vzw.)
So all is good!

You can get WiFi tether w/o root now (see open garden or foxfi) and you can hide (disable) much bloat using stock. Of course tibu is a nice bonus that does require root, so each person will have to decide for themselves, but take heart that if you didn't get root you may not be missing much.

Yes essentially. Actually there was about a week in between, during which time I deleted some bloat, but don't do that. Do as I say, not as I do!
Process should be something like:
0. Back up everything!
1. Use @mattlgroff windows RAZR HD utility 1.10 to
(A) revert back to ICS and wipe everything
(B) get root via @djrbliss motofail2go debglug exploit & install su, busybox
(C) install voodoo ota root keeper & protect root
(D) install safe strap
2. Temp unroot
3. Get 6mb update (some say do between 1A &B, but I did it here and lycked out.
4. Get JB update
5. Now here check out matt's post on how to upgrade and keep root.

He's says to install ICS on one of safe straps slots. I skipped this step - think if you needed to you could do it later, but its a good idea b/c we know ICS is rootable, although if you loose root can't boot safe strap. Hm, have to read up on that.
6. Take latest 4.1.2 ota. You cannot ho back to ICS now unless you have it on safe strap.
7. Restore root with voodoo

That's the whole question, actually. I've got a new Maxx HD that has stock ROM, locked bootloader and has never had root, and if it's already running 9.18.79. Has any method been found to either root it and/or unlock the bootloader?

Actually, what I've read since getting the phone yesterday seems to differ just a bit from "no way to root". There's a thread on droidrzr.com that spells out what seems like a reasonable way to achieve root on an XT926 running 9.18.79. The thread is here http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/23729-rsd-scripts-samurihls-razr-hd-emporium/ I don't know if it works. I'll likely try it later this morning (need more coffee first).
However -- Everything I've read so far says that I'm out of luck in terms of getting the bootloader unlocked. That sucks because, well, we ought to be able to use our devices as we see fit. But If I am able to get root I'll be able to use most of the functionality I need.
One more thing I read (and forgot to bookmark) is that, if the root method above works on updated XT926s, I should be able to install Safestrap and maybe flash an older ROM that used Safestrap. I don't know if that's true and I don't know yet if I'll need that but one of my first goals when I get a new Razr HD is to find a way to get rid of the Navigation Bar and use PIE Control. I struggled mightily with that before the bootloader unlock was released because I'm just not smart enough to decompile my systemui and all that stuff.
I apologize I totally misread your post. Yes root is still possible but unlocking the bootloader is not at the moment.

Maybe it'll be OK. Obviously it'd be best to be able to unlock the bootloader but I've been able to root the phone, install Safestrap and install a couple of "older" ROMs. For my purposes that's probably enough. I can run any app I want, I can eliminate the Navbar that I hate (using PIE Control instead) and I'm rid of the Verizon bloat. Not ideal but not terrible either.
Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.

Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible

I doubt there will be another exploit. This phone is a year old now and most devs are focusing on custom ROMs.

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

My phone is the not-unlockable one and locked.
I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Thanks for the info. I have just restored the backup stock rom and all is good. Installed Root Keeper anyway.
Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

im assuming your bootloader is unlocked?
if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.
I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

there is no need for a new exploit if you have an unlocked bootloader.
search for a flash-able SU zip or search razr forum for the rooting unlocked bootloader thread.

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

Then are you sure you have an unlocked boot loader? If not, then you are hosed. We're just going by the fact that you posted " Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty".

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy
tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?

I'm in the same boat. But, since the leak is only a couple of days out, I'm 99.999% sure that there is only a handful of people that would know the solution. And since they are the ones who created this update in the first place, we will have to wait until our more c rafty comrades get lucky and crack it.
My advice is to hold what you have. Tap and pay is my only motivator to update. And when you boil it down, thats just a gimmick anyhow. Having root has more weight. I updated too soon once. Now I can't unlock.
There is no way. Not voodoo or superSU. Only unlocked boots should be taking the OTA!

Also, if you do happen to get root back for the locked bootloaders, the Sqlite tethering hack doesn't work anymore as well. They fixed that exploit with the KK update.
However, as long as you have root, there is another hack to make it work. I posted another thread on how to do this at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2749659.
Cannot install even after removing SafeStrap and SuperSU
I have a Verizon Motorola RAZR MAXX HD running 9.18.94.XT926. I had rooted the phone, was using SafeStrap and SuperSU. I removed both but the OTA for KitKat still fails. Any ideas?

It's because the phone is still modified. You'll have to sbf back to a stock version.

yes I reverted back to stock. worked fine but root is gone of course and whats weird is no developer options in settings to enable usb debugging?

It's there. Go to Settings, then select "About Phone". Scroll down to "Build Number" and keep tapping on it. Eventually, it will tell you developer mode has been enabled.
This was the same under Jelly Bean.
