hey guys i just noticed that our camera doesnt support zoom -.-
is there anyway by how we can port some custom app or somthing by which we can enable zoom and hopefully HD video recording(assuming that its possible bcuz many phones having 5mp cameras have it)
and also it would be good if we could use the "R" button for taking pics
I've tried LOADS of camera apps for this exact reason, and most of them come up saying that the camera does not support zoom, so i guess it is the actual hardware, not the program that is to blame its a same really, the only thing letting this phone down so far, that i have found, is the camera on it, tho i was used to my Nokie N82 8mp, with its AMAZING camera!!
i know its sad why why SE doesnt make devices perfect!! all of the devices have some or the other thing missing
I see no point in digital zoom az its like cropping the full size picture!
There must be an app somewhere that allows zoom. Anyone tried to get the xperia x10 app?
I can't believe this a lot pf people complained how the iphone didn't have zoom now Sony does this?

+1 on that! Quality seriously degrades
Yea, digital zoom is mostly pointless.
All it does is degrade the picture quality by cropping it, which you can do on your PC after you have taken it.
I have another question.
Is there zoom during video?
Nope :S

Camera Zoom FX and Vignette support zoom and work ok after playing with settings. I think camera zoom FX compresses even unzoomed images to look worse than with stock camera. Vignette does not open right at default but after going through some setting I could fix it. Hope it helps.
I must say I was very surprised that SE haven't made a bespoke camera app for the XPlay, bit naff to have the basic GB one only
Guys, our camera hardware doesn't support any sort of zoom what so ever, disappointing I know. But quite honestly, zoom on a phones camera(unless its a pretty high megapixel camera), usually sucks.

I'm not bothered about having zoom in the app, as digital zoom is pointless and is less effective than zooming in to a full size pic with Photoshop or similar. What I would like is a fully fledged camera app though, with filters, proper settings, panorama/HDR mode etc which is all software so is perfectly possible.
Likewise, I have no interest in the zoom but is there any way to get a camera app with the interface like that on the Arc? I realise we can't have the 3D stuff/sweep etc. but just the interface would be good...can't stand the stock android app.
Hi,
Since the N5 has good camera with numerous functionnality i was wondering which camera app fits the best to it ?
I'm waiting for my n5 to arrived..
But i like camera FX, can someone try it on its nexus 5 and report if it's working well or not ?

I've tried CameraFX and Focal, and the pictures come out darker in low light and less precise... It seems the optimisation is built into the stock app at the moment so there's little point going 3rd party.

What about focal? Not sure if it works for the nexus 5 since I don't have the phone yet but focal has been pretty good for me on the n4

The stock Android app is rubbish and fiddly to use, but ive not found a third party one that works very well yet. As has been said they seem to be optimising the camera in the camera app rather than in the firmware and Kernel. Rather cheeky for a Nexus..

It doesn't work on the N5 so save your money.
Having tested a few 3rd party camera apps on my N5 yesterday I can say they all seem to be bugging out a bit at the moment.
I can also say, for gods sake, why are there no 3rd party camera apps for android with a UI that doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out. All I want is something neat like camera+ for iOS, is it too much to ask?

Does that mean no 3rd party cam app will likely ever operate acceptably with it?
Hope not, I was counting on some manual control options (that aren't in stock) to try and squeeze out some quality from this cam.
Give Focal a try.
I'm generally "not happy" with the camera so far (understatement). So far "A better camera" is the best. Here's what I've tried, I'll try to be brief:
Stock camera sort of focuses but can still be blurry, and sucks at low light and the menu stinks.
Focal isn't able to focus well.
Moto X camera seems to work but is lacking in options.
Camera FV-5 looks like a nice camera app with tons of features, but had a couple force closes and the demo is WAY too limiting to see if I can actually get a decent shot out of it. If android had a longer return period for purchases I would try it out.
A Better Camera does a good job of focusing and taking a sharp picture. It's fast and so far, has some nice features, the UI looks a little low res, but that's pretty minor.
if anyone has any others to comment about, please share.

The phone has been out for less than a week. Give the devs the chance to at least update the apps.
If you're new to the nexus line, better get used to this. Your phone gets android updates first, which means that at Day0 of each update a lot of your 3rd party apps will stop working
Maybe the camera app from LG G2 is worth a try?
The camera apps are buggy. Maybe due to the bad auto focus in the stock camera ? Hopes this gets fix because when it focus right the pictures are gorgeous from looking at the screen.

Try Lenovo Super Camera app. I used it on S3 and it kept crashing however on N5 its working a lot better than the stock app. I didn't try all mods and effects however I tested HDR mode and kind of liked it better than stock HDR+ but YMMV ... so give it a shot ... installs like a regular apk. Please post your experience here as I just got my phone a few hours ago so still looking for best apps.

P.S. By the way I am using 3.1.3 and since its working I am not going to bother updating to 3.5.5
My problem is the lack of burst mode on the stock camera. Other than that and the limited settings, I'm quite happy with the way the shots come out. I've tried a few 3rd party apps so far with burst shot but they all seem to be geared towards slower phones so they tend to severely reduce output quality to compensate.
Come on Google....sort the camera app.
Maybe a petition might help?

Same here. I've purchased quite a few and none beat this combo for IQ. We really are at the mercy of the hardware.
Just got Lollipop, retried FV5, and definitely love its manual iso and exposure time control, as well as raw dng support. Processing the dng files with PS express, I get great results in low light, noticeably better than stock hdr+. You can browse thru the dngs with slingshot and share/ send them to PS express
Camera FV-5 only support PNG (for now), not DNG.
I hace FV5 v2.23, not sure whether it is beta still, but it does support everything I said in full resolution on lollipop nexus5.

I turned on manual focus via google camera and all has been good for me. Stock 5.0.
I am thinking about installing stock lollipop on my Galaxy S4, touchwiz lollipop just looks gross and I don't want it. Is this good idea? Which features will I loose compared to stock? First of all, i heard camera isn't that good... I currently have kitkat on I9505
Just install CM12.1
It's super fast, smooth and according to my month of usage the battery life is better (without using greenify)
Am pretty sure you won't miss the gimmicks like air stuff...
The only thing you'll be missing is the camera app (use the htc one camera app it's faster and better)
Make sure you install the right modem for better call quality and the right Gapps
In conclusion TW rom is good but full of bloat and unnecessary apps that takes too much space
Sooo go ahead with the stock feel of goole rom

Install Camera MX from the Play Store if you want a free option that has working HDR on CM12/12.1. However, be aware that like the Touchwiz S4 camera, the effect is entirely done using software. The better HDR apps such as Camera Zoom FX Pro (what I'm using) or A Better Camera take multiple images and layer them to create the final image.
The only thing you'll be missing is the camera app

You won't have any of those fancy air gestures. Nor any of the samsung apps. And the camera features. It's not about the picture quality, it's more about the features the touchwiz camera has compared to the other camera apps.
Realistically, some features in the stock camera, for example motion picture or dual shot, are gimmicks. Everything else, including HDR, is a filter, which for the average person isn't a bad thing. Thankfully the stock camera's HDR filter isn't overblown and cartoonish, and using a filter does allow the end user to capture motion shots which multi-shot HDR (exposure bracketing) cannot.
Besides the fact it's free on the Play Store, the reason I recommended Camera MX if the OP goes to CM12.1 is because it has most of the same filters as the stock camera. It does have a couple gimmick features of its own, such as Mirror, where the right hand side of the image is a mirror of the left, and Kaleidoscope, where it literally takes a slice of the image and duplicates it in a 360-degree circle. While the app can be used "out of the box" without adjustments, unlike the stock camera you can change the intensity of the chosen filter, or even go with some really weird effects. For example, a HDR image where you have a rainbow of colors overlaying it instead of the expected "popping" of color.

Bluetooth nowadays is used only for a wireless headset mostly and hooking the device up with your car. Other than that are there any other uses?
I have my device since november and used bluetooth only twice or thrice.
I doubt anyone uses bluetooth to send files anymore. Especially since you can do that now using NFC.
So it mostly depends on how often you use that particular feature.
I don't use Bluetooth at all. I have a wireless headset and never use it. So bluetooth is not a deal breaker.

To each his own.
Maybe you dont use BT as often as I do, but when you especially need it imagine how frustrating it will be.
nonetheless, touchwiz lollipop has its own ****ty problems like video lag and recents lag. I am gonna give another shot at cm12 and decide which one is less annoying and tolerable.
I regret selling off nexus 5.
So how about enlightening the audience and explaining what you use bluetooth for? That way the OP can come to an informed decision based upon his needs, rather than listening to us prattle on about whether the bluetooth in CM12.1 is ready for prime time.
Personally, stock 5.0.1 Touchwiz is running really well on my 9505, rooted with alot of apps disabled/deleted though. Battery life is great, around 3-4 hours of screen on time with data/wifi all day and over 5 hours with just wifi on all day, pretty much no lag (except for the awful recent app screen). I'd recommend it. If you really can't handle touchwiz, then i'd say go with a Google Play Edition room (9505 only).

The main problem in the GPE ROM is that the stock camera is the Google camera, and as you note, it's limited, though unlike CM12.1, HDR does work. Danvdh & Kryten's GPE ROM does have an add on where you can replace the Google camera with the OnePlus One or Motorola cameras. I personally recommend the OnePlus camera. A nicer interface and you can store photos on the MicroSD. Compared to the Google camera you don't get photosphere, but you do have working effects.
For CM12.1, Camera MX for the free option with working adjustable HDR and other effects filters, or if you go with a paid option, I recommend any camera app that includes three-shot exposure bracketed HDR, e.g. Camera FX Zoom Pro.

Hi folks,
I am thinking of upgrading to Lollipop to profit from the new camera-controls. From what I read, there is an app called "Manual Camera" (not allowed to post external links, hmpf) which makes use of Lollipop's Camera2 API to gain more control over camera settings like shutter-speed, aperture etc. This attracts me a lot, since I am quite a photo-geek.
BUT BUT BUT: everything runs super-smooth with my rooted stock 4.4.2 system on my N9005 right now (see specs below), and it is my one and only phone in everyday use. So, I am really not sure if I should throw the L-word to it?!? ...I was already about to do it, made all the neccessary backups, but then started to brood.
After all: it seems not so clear if there will be a way to root it again afterwards?! Anyone knows anything about the issue? After a lot of searching I downloaded a 6.48.4 PhilZTouch Recovery, that is said to be compatible with Lollipop. Even if that was true, havn´t found a rooted kernel yet...
Not to talk about the re-configuration-struggle...
So, I would love to hear your opinions, in order to somehow make some progress with this decision...
Thank you so much!
PS: It seems I won´t get any update via Samsung servers because of the rooting... possible?

I'm quite curious how an app would be able to change a hardware-fixed aperture...
Plenty of camera apps that allow manual settings, as much as the hardware permits. Personally I quite like ProCapture and Camera FV-5. Though I find I generally reach for my DSLR when I intend to take a decent photo, rather than my Note 3.

Hi Lea, I already expected this objection to come but I wasn´t sure if the aperture was fixed or not. Does not really matter to me anyway, because even with the fixed aperture, there could be much more control over the exposure settings than there is at the moment.
I have been using ProCapture for years and recently tried Camera FV-5 to see if it would satisfy my needs. Unfortunately it does not. Here are some examples of what I would like to do, and what should be possible from the hardware aspects, but none of the available apps seem to allow.
But before the examples, here is the reason, why I would love to get the max. out of my Note3's camera: I use to be in the austrian mountains a lot doing all kinds of mountain-sports. Mostly it is not an option whatsoever to take my Nikon D700 with me. I have ordered a Canon Powershot S200 a few days ago to fill the gap, but if I could do all the work with my Note3 (e.g. taking good pictures in addition to navigating, communicating, route planning etc.) I would be even happier because often times I really need to be strict about weight...
1) Bracketing for later HDR processing.
Often times (e.g. small but strong light source from the front) the exposure metering of the phone does not find the correct setting as a starting point for the bracketing. That can easily lead to the point, that not even the "furtherest away exposure" (plz. excuse my english) of the bracketing (e.g. +/-2 ) neither is what I want and that makes the whole series unusable for later HDR processing. With ProCapture, Bracketing is not available at all and with Camera FV-5 when using Bracketing, the manual exposure compensation is not available.
2) Timer + Bracketing.
If you give this a try, you will see what bloody nonsense Camera FV-5 does: it runs the timer before every exposure of the series when all I want is to later create an HDR image on which I appear myself. -> Not possible.
3) ISO control.
Camera FV-5 shows the ISO values when taking a picture. Assuming it tells us the truth, there can also be values below 100 ISO. But why can´t I set such values manually?
Conclusio: I don´t know anything about the hardware, as you already revealed but I assume there must be much more than the current software allows to get out of N9005's lens.
