Stock Camera App

I've tried CameraFX and Focal, and the pictures come out darker in low light and less precise... It seems the optimisation is built into the stock app at the moment so there's little point going 3rd party.

Thanks for testing
I'm looking for third party app since stock doesn't allow us to choose ISO for instance

What about focal? Not sure if it works for the nexus 5 since I don't have the phone yet but focal has been pretty good for me on the n4

The stock Android app is rubbish and fiddly to use, but ive not found a third party one that works very well yet. As has been said they seem to be optimising the camera in the camera app rather than in the firmware and Kernel. Rather cheeky for a Nexus..

Lots of options to take advanced control of the camera. Buy the pro version.

It doesn't work on the N5 so save your money.

Having tested a few 3rd party camera apps on my N5 yesterday I can say they all seem to be bugging out a bit at the moment.
I can also say, for gods sake, why are there no 3rd party camera apps for android with a UI that doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out. All I want is something neat like camera+ for iOS, is it too much to ask?

Sounds like opportunity knocking, better get yourself an Android SDK and a few development/programming books and crank out such an app - there's money to be made, man!

Does that mean no 3rd party cam app will likely ever operate acceptably with it?
Hope not, I was counting on some manual control options (that aren't in stock) to try and squeeze out some quality from this cam.

Give Focal a try.

I'm generally "not happy" with the camera so far (understatement). So far "A better camera" is the best. Here's what I've tried, I'll try to be brief:
Stock camera sort of focuses but can still be blurry, and sucks at low light and the menu stinks.
Focal isn't able to focus well.
Moto X camera seems to work but is lacking in options.
Camera FV-5 looks like a nice camera app with tons of features, but had a couple force closes and the demo is WAY too limiting to see if I can actually get a decent shot out of it. If android had a longer return period for purchases I would try it out.
A Better Camera does a good job of focusing and taking a sharp picture. It's fast and so far, has some nice features, the UI looks a little low res, but that's pretty minor.
if anyone has any others to comment about, please share.

The phone has been out for less than a week. Give the devs the chance to at least update the apps.
If you're new to the nexus line, better get used to this. Your phone gets android updates first, which means that at Day0 of each update a lot of your 3rd party apps will stop working

Maybe the camera app from LG G2 is worth a try?

The camera apps are buggy. Maybe due to the bad auto focus in the stock camera ? Hopes this gets fix because when it focus right the pictures are gorgeous from looking at the screen.

Try Lenovo Super Camera app. I used it on S3 and it kept crashing however on N5 its working a lot better than the stock app. I didn't try all mods and effects however I tested HDR mode and kind of liked it better than stock HDR+ but YMMV ... so give it a shot ... installs like a regular apk. Please post your experience here as I just got my phone a few hours ago so still looking for best apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427015
P.S. By the way I am using 3.1.3 and since its working I am not going to bother updating to 3.5.5

My problem is the lack of burst mode on the stock camera. Other than that and the limited settings, I'm quite happy with the way the shots come out. I've tried a few 3rd party apps so far with burst shot but they all seem to be geared towards slower phones so they tend to severely reduce output quality to compensate.
Come on Google....sort the camera app.
Maybe a petition might help?

[Q] Any really decent non-Sense camera app out there?

While I love CM7 or many other stock android based roms out there, two things on stock android that keeps me going back to Sense-based rom. Rubbish camera app, and so so dialer/contact app.
So this week I have discovered "Go Contact", which is a really decent dialer+contact app that can make me forget about the Sense dialer/contact. But what about camera app?
Stock Android camera app really sucks. Ugly UI with extremely limited control settings, I'm not talking about "vintage looking" filters and all those stuff, but things like ISO settings. As much as I hate Blur or TouchWiz, but almost every phone that I have tried with custom manufacturer UI has camera app that is much better than stock Android's one.
I see that some people have extracted the camera app from Sony Ericsson phones and it seems like it can be installed and used on stock Android framework. I haven't tried that though. My question is, is there any decent camera app on the Market that is comparable to Sense's camera app? That is non-proprietary and not made by manufacturer like Samsung/HTC/Motorola/LG/Sony?
There's a market app called lgcamera that has been recommended to me. Going to try it out today. It also has a camcorder that supports higher bitrate video and in mp4 format instead of 3gp.
Thanks, just tried it out. The UI is a bit rough and needs some work, but it does seem promising. I'll try to do some serious testing with it tomorrow. BTW, does it have anything to do with LG?
No idea, maybe it's based on an lg camera or something..

Camera360 Ultimate has been my standby on my Desire running CM7. i threw it on my Sensation (running Leedroid) and for some reason, it doesn't go full screen. hopefully when i get CM7 on it, this will be fixed up...
Camera 360 works fullscreen. You will just have to change the picture resolution. It's a great replacement for the sense camera.

You might check out Vignette it is a paid app but has fantastic reviews. I use it and love it.
Vignette, or FxCamera for that matter, is definitely NOT the type of camera application that I'm looking for. I'm looking for camera apps that give various camera controls like ISO, white balance, exposure, contrast, sharpness, and preferably compression ratio. It would be great if there were apps that provides shutter speed and aperture settings, but I suppose these two settings are harder to implement die to hardware differences.
So far lgCamera seems to be the most promising... Camera 360 has much better UI, but does not offer as many camera controls as lgCamera.

Are you using a downloaded apk? If so then turn compatibility off within spare parts, reboot your phone and try the app again.
The thing i'm looking for is a camera with manual focus not the ****ty touch to focus crap which htc seem to deem acceptable or for that matter, 360, zoom, vignette or any of the others i've tried, no camera seems to offer manual zoom, like a slider or a dial.
Pretty bad when you want to take a pic up close, using macro doesn't always work.

Same problem here with my Sensation.
With the new roms based on ICS seems that the problem is solved (Camera360 runs full screen).
Two months ago, or more, I sent an email to the developers but they have not done anything.
I'm testing CameraPro that has enough advanced options.
Use MIUI rom... it has a decent camera. Here are a few pics taken with it... the one pic is the same but in night and day.

Yeh I have the same rom as you CM9 R8 and to me the image on the screen isnt as clear but when you take a pic it seems the resolution turns out better than you expected. I also noticed that the camera button on the side of your phone doesnt work which is lame I really liked using that for picture taking it was handy but oh well cant be perfect for a rom. If you want also do what I did, I just downloaded other camera and video apps. Way better than the stock app and on the screen they show up as better resolution than the stock app
Yeah, unfortunately the camera apps that come with CM/AOKP ROMs are very lacking on this phone, compared to the stock camera app. There are some third-party apps that do reasonably well, though. I like Camera360.

The black bars on the side is because the phone has a 16x9 screen but the picture is being taken in the 4:3 ratio. It's the same thing as watching an old tv show on a new widescreen tv.
Talking about our camera, has anyone figured out a way to port our camera to Cyanogen? That's the only thing that's stopping me from flashing a Rom, considering I've had this phone for a year.

Well I'm running the RemICS_UX port from the HD2. Not bad of a rom. It's over samsungized but I'll find a theme for it. It claims to have the 1080p recording so lets see how that works out.
I personally don't care for all the "features" of the stock CAMERA app since I can always download a 3rd party app that will be on par. I only use night mode, macro and automatic. My main concern is 1080p recording (and that the mic doesn't sound so crappy).

I believe the 1080 not working has more to do with HTC Android drivers for the camera, rather than the available choice in the software.

Yeah, trying to record in 1080 makes the button useless. I'm starting to feel that the phone doesn't have real 1080p feature. My last phone was a Huawei Comet/U8150 and I had a very similar issue with the camera. Turned out that the phone had a 2.0 megapixel camera that was made to look like a 3.0 by the stock software. It was a sorry excuse of a camera.
I'm going to have to think about this one. I wonder if we could somehow port or rewrite a code to get 1080p working. Sadly, I know nothing about android development. My main thought was to sit the htc camera apk on top of cyanogen but I've read up that it's not that simple.... which I find weird considering someone has the beats by dre stuff on their mytouch4g slide rom.
Its not to complicated to understand but it is to fix. You see it does have true 1080 recording and it still one of the best cellphone cameras to date. Thing is if you want to run a custom ROM that is not based of the original T-Mobile release then some things may not be the same, the camera being one.
Unless you can get ahold of the proprietary camera drivers or write you're own you will be missing much of what is available. And any app based off the HTC framework will not work of different, such as cyanogen or even aosp.
Even phones that have been nearly torn apart by some super smart people doesn't mean that everything imaginable is possible or at least not easy. Try running sense on a Samsung phone, not too easy. Just saying be happy for what you have unless you know a sneaky backdoor to these issues that no one has thought of yet

This is sort of a half baked answer because I'm on a stock ROM, but of the many camera apps I've tried on the stock ROM, this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam has the best quality for still shots amoungst those that have panorama support, that I have found so far. I have not tested panorama yet. Its most likely that I picked it up on a free app of the day account.
Another one that does not have panorama but that is very good for still shots, the best one I've seen and is free, is this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lightbox.android.camera which I mention just because the quality is very good and when I've been on non stock builds in the past the camera has been the thing that has always brought me back to stock.
Hopefully the current cyanogen camera is of good quality, and its quite possible that the ones I mentioned front end the stock camera rather than hooking into it at a lower level. Its worth a quick try with the first one though; 15 minutes trial isn't much for a camera app trial but its a better offer than what those other phones have
Agreed ABC is the best camera app I have used photo quality is great.

Really the only thing I'd like is a burst mode. I like that when taking pics of the kids playing. Otherwise I used very few features of my old sammy cameras so the stock app is fine for me. I don't suppose there's any way to add a burst mode to it - any mods or anything?

Just got Lollipop, retried FV5, and definitely love its manual iso and exposure time control, as well as raw dng support. Processing the dng files with PS express, I get great results in low light, noticeably better than stock hdr+. You can browse thru the dngs with slingshot and share/ send them to PS express

Galaxy s4 lollipop touchwiz vs stock

I am thinking about installing stock lollipop on my Galaxy S4, touchwiz lollipop just looks gross and I don't want it. Is this good idea? Which features will I loose compared to stock? First of all, i heard camera isn't that good... I currently have kitkat on I9505
Just install CM12.1
It's super fast, smooth and according to my month of usage the battery life is better (without using greenify)
Am pretty sure you won't miss the gimmicks like air stuff...
The only thing you'll be missing is the camera app (use the htc one camera app it's faster and better)
Make sure you install the right modem for better call quality and the right Gapps
In conclusion TW rom is good but full of bloat and unnecessary apps that takes too much space
Sooo go ahead with the stock feel of goole rom

go ahead with touchwiz lollipop. you could install google now launcher and google keyboard and say goodbye to almost all touchwiz grossness. camera in cm12 its a shame compared to tw and nobody has solved it.
good luck
Install Camera MX from the Play Store if you want a free option that has working HDR on CM12/12.1. However, be aware that like the Touchwiz S4 camera, the effect is entirely done using software. The better HDR apps such as Camera Zoom FX Pro (what I'm using) or A Better Camera take multiple images and layer them to create the final image.
The only thing you'll be missing is the camera app

You won't have any of those fancy air gestures. Nor any of the samsung apps. And the camera features. It's not about the picture quality, it's more about the features the touchwiz camera has compared to the other camera apps.
Realistically, some features in the stock camera, for example motion picture or dual shot, are gimmicks. Everything else, including HDR, is a filter, which for the average person isn't a bad thing. Thankfully the stock camera's HDR filter isn't overblown and cartoonish, and using a filter does allow the end user to capture motion shots which multi-shot HDR (exposure bracketing) cannot.
Besides the fact it's free on the Play Store, the reason I recommended Camera MX if the OP goes to CM12.1 is because it has most of the same filters as the stock camera. It does have a couple gimmick features of its own, such as Mirror, where the right hand side of the image is a mirror of the left, and Kaleidoscope, where it literally takes a slice of the image and duplicates it in a 360-degree circle. While the app can be used "out of the box" without adjustments, unlike the stock camera you can change the intensity of the chosen filter, or even go with some really weird effects. For example, a HDR image where you have a rainbow of colors overlaying it instead of the expected "popping" of color.

Bluetooth nowadays is used only for a wireless headset mostly and hooking the device up with your car. Other than that are there any other uses?
I have my device since november and used bluetooth only twice or thrice.
I doubt anyone uses bluetooth to send files anymore. Especially since you can do that now using NFC.
So it mostly depends on how often you use that particular feature.
I don't use Bluetooth at all. I have a wireless headset and never use it. So bluetooth is not a deal breaker.

To each his own.
Maybe you dont use BT as often as I do, but when you especially need it imagine how frustrating it will be.
nonetheless, touchwiz lollipop has its own ****ty problems like video lag and recents lag. I am gonna give another shot at cm12 and decide which one is less annoying and tolerable.
I regret selling off nexus 5.
So how about enlightening the audience and explaining what you use bluetooth for? That way the OP can come to an informed decision based upon his needs, rather than listening to us prattle on about whether the bluetooth in CM12.1 is ready for prime time.
Personally, stock 5.0.1 Touchwiz is running really well on my 9505, rooted with alot of apps disabled/deleted though. Battery life is great, around 3-4 hours of screen on time with data/wifi all day and over 5 hours with just wifi on all day, pretty much no lag (except for the awful recent app screen). I'd recommend it. If you really can't handle touchwiz, then i'd say go with a Google Play Edition room (9505 only).

The main problem in the GPE ROM is that the stock camera is the Google camera, and as you note, it's limited, though unlike CM12.1, HDR does work. Danvdh & Kryten's GPE ROM does have an add on where you can replace the Google camera with the OnePlus One or Motorola cameras. I personally recommend the OnePlus camera. A nicer interface and you can store photos on the MicroSD. Compared to the Google camera you don't get photosphere, but you do have working effects.
For CM12.1, Camera MX for the free option with working adjustable HDR and other effects filters, or if you go with a paid option, I recommend any camera app that includes three-shot exposure bracketed HDR, e.g. Camera FX Zoom Pro.
