Those without unlimited minutes will take comfort in the fact that T-Mobile will not count wi-fi calling against your minutes starting 5/11:
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/05/t-mobile-bring-unlimited-wifi-calling-back/
This just plain kicks butt!
I bee happy!
Awesome. Man my gf would really benefit that. She constantly goes over her minutes and we have a great wifi connection here.
+1 reason why Tmo rocks

Anyone got wifi calling? this sounds like a reason to get it back. I should have froze it andnot deleted it..
This is huge in my opinion. Great selling point for those of us in the cellular industry.

Isn't wifi using my bandwidth
I don't understand how t-mobile could count this against your minutes in the 1st place. Are you using their system in any way when you are on a wifi call? It's like skype right? Your using your broadband providers bandwidth. Why should you pay tmobile at all? If anything your're saving their bandwidth when making calls on wifi.
Or do I have this all wrong? It's moot for me cause I'll be on the unlimited plan when these activate tomorrow.
But when I first saw mention of the wifi calling, it never occured to me that Tmobile was charging for it.
Same thing with surfing the web on wifi...you are taking the strain off their system.
They use your bandwidth to an endpoint they own and then switch the call normally over their networks.
With WiFi connectivity you don't traverse their servers so it doesn't cost them.

....meaning Skype?
That would not be correct. Calls still have to be routed through their network--through their PBXs and switches.

that is the old feature. The new one will be completely free if your phone is compatible with wifi calling.
Okay so there is an option in settings to disable network data usage. That is fine, but I still want 2G (EDGE/GPRS) but I don't want 3G/4G. Anyway to do this?

no, with wifi ON it will not use data. You can also use the free wifi calling at home and it won't count against your minutes.
Today I got throttled for going over the 5GB . but the funny thing is that I did it on purpose to see if they will actually throttle my account or not. well they did lol 2 more days until next billing cycle.. It sucks, the fastest I'm getting is 53kbps.

As far as WiFi that you are stating is it WiFi picking up from an access point or USING your portable Wifi hotspot??
If you are using your Wii, PS3, etc. and using your phone as a WiFi, it will use your data and it will eat it quick.
I used my phone as a WiFi to coneect to my Wii and two Netflix in....I was throttled!!!!
Hope this makes sense??

Then YES you would be fine as it will not use your data.
From the good folk over at TmoNews. I changed over via T-Mobile Chat. If you're paying for a 5 or 10 GB plan, might as well add this option. T-Mobile charges $15 to use mobile hotspots and they don't give you any extra data.
I've use the feature with my tablet and was never charged but just in case...

Hey Moe, Larry and Curly! Did you guys bother to read the story on the other side of the link?
Here's the skinny - T-Mobile started charging $14.99 a month for you to use mobile hot spots. The promotion gives you FREE mobile hot spots. And no, I'm not talking about the app.
Hey knows nothing about anything and is for some reason rude, I tether quite often and don't have any extra charges....

Do you know what a T-Mobile hotspot is?
https://selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/services_about.do
It has nothing to do with tethering your phone or even using your data plan. It's actually the opposite, it allows you to connect to a broadband network called "T-Mobile HotSpot".
Ya but we have tether hotspot on our phones meaning my friends tablet works places I am at cause I enable my phone to be a device to connect to via wifi.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Actually...
1) Yes, you can tether your t-mobile device.
2) Yes, you can do it without paying t-mobile.
HOWEVER
3) If you do it heavily, they will send you a message complaining, and telling you that if you want to continue, you'll need to pay $14.99
I received that message last month... to date they haven't cut off my tethering.. however, technically, they do charge for the service, even though it works without paying.
but...
4) I don't know if they will actually cut anyone off - I wasn't cut off, but YMMV
And, yes, they are now offering a free add-on now that allows you to legitimately tether without paying...
However "to protect revenue stream" they aren't offering it proactively, it's supposed to be offered as a save feature if someone is wanting to cancel.

What your talking about is using sharing your data plan.
"T-Mobile HotSpot" is a service. If you go to a restaurant and scan wireless networks there will be a "T-Mobile HotSpot" and you can connect to it and now you have broadband internet that doesn't count towards your data plan.
I got that bit lol. I guess the difference is more important to some then me.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Quote from their Add. "Smartphone Mobile Hotspot provides the ability to share a Smartphone's 4G connection and is normally a $14.99 value." Which would be Tethering & portable hotspot in the phones settings.
Just got it activated on my existing 5gb plan. Thanks!
I wonder if you can qualify if you have unlimited data, they would probably force me to choose the 5 or 10th and give that up. I already pay the 15$ a month for the hotspot...

There are special libs that work with Kineto.apk. They are located in /system/lib, they are:
libganril.so
libkineto.so
librilswitch.so
They all must be on the phone to make wifi calling work. Will they work flawlessly on her phone? I honestly don't know, but that's how it is on the G2x. I never even heard of that phone
I'll try pushing
libganril.so
libkineto.so
librilswitch.so
into her system/lib folder and see what happens. Do i need to link these shared obj files or can i just place them?

Yes i am aware that the wifi calling apk is for t mobile. I figured i might give it a try though and see what happens. Maybe thats a dead end. So, I have nettalk on her phone at the moment but it only works on out going calls and gives her a different number. I need something similar to t mobile wi-fi calling that allows her to keep her number? I am willing to buy from the market. One time fee though. Nothing like pay per call or credited accounts. Ideas?

There is no way the T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling app will work for you. Regardless of if you can get the app to run on the phone, it requires specific support on the carrier side to work.

Yeah i have thought about doing that but from what I've heard, she gets assigned a GV number and is not able to keep her old one. It's like having a whole new number. then she would have to hand that out. Thats why i have been hesitant and left this as my last resort. But hey, something is better than nothing any day in my book!!
Or am i wrong? Does she get to keep/use her old one?
@andrewNY, yeah i was hoping that wasn't the case, thanks for confirming though!
