Okay so there is an option in settings to disable network data usage. That is fine, but I still want 2G (EDGE/GPRS) but I don't want 3G/4G. Anyway to do this?

Are you selecting 2G networks only? If so, that will change it.
It also changes to GSM Only if Wifi Calling is enabled and connected.
no im not, all that changes on its own i just notice it only happens when i have my wifi on. its kind of a pain to have to keep changing it i never had that problem with any other phone
are you using the sim card that had been provided with g2x or from your previous phone? ive had issues where my apns had been disappearing after flashing custom rom, activated new sim today, works great just fyi
I'm having the same problem. I'm using simple mobile apn settings but, whenever i try to use my data. It changes back to the t-mo apn settings
Mobile network switching is normal behavior. If the Edge signal is stronger than the 3G signal the phone will switch to whichever signal is strongest. If you want 3/4G only then download '3G Only' app from the Android Market.
If you have wcdma only selected and the area that you are in is not 4g you will not have service.

It would be nice to be able to set the 4g to 2g threshold settings. At my work if I forget to manually switch to 2g, my phone stays on 4g (it still finds a weak signal so it doesn't switch to 2g) and I miss all calls, emails, sms....
Just to confirm, there is no way to tell the g2x when it should switch from 4g to 2g right?

There are apps like Tasker that allow you to set things depending on your GPS location or times of the day. I don't know if it specifically lets you set when your phone goes from 2G/4G but I think it does.

Right I was thinking about that. What I ment was switch from 4g to 2g based on signal strength. I'm sure there is some kind of a limit in place to know when to make the switch. It would be nice to be able to modify this.

Not sure about a way to manually set the thresholds but there is one setting you can change that's supposed to require a stronger WCDMA signal before it switches from 2G. On your dialer, dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone Information. Scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "WCDMA and GSM Auto" with the stock rom. I think with CM its called something like GSM Auto PRL.
The difference from WCDMA is that Auto requires a higher signal strength threshold to use switch to 4G. Not sure what those thresholds are and I haven't noticed much difference but I have pretty good signal everywhere I go.
It.wouldn't hurt to try it though.

Oh and a better shortcut to that menu is download anycut from the market, add shortcut to desktop using that program and tap activity then look for testing.

The setting should stick until you change it again. Is it changing automatically on yours?
I changed the settings a few times when I close the setting it always saves the setting I picked.
Is it supposed to save these setting after a reboot or when turn the phone off.
I noticed while on WI-FI it's always on GSM

Is there a way to switch off 4g on the verizon SGIII and leave on the 3g to save some battery?
I don't want to turn off mobile data completely but i can't find how to turn off 4g like on the galaxy nexus.
I'm looking for the same feature as well. I haven't been able to find it yet. I've been having issues with the phone not having a data connection while on 4g. 3g works fine and i'd like to force it to drop from 4g to 3g.
I called VZW and their technicians were stumped that there was no way to disable the 4g radio in the settings. They were also confused as to why I get wifi notifications when the wifi is turned off (thanks verizon. I pay for unlimited data and i get nagged to use wifi).
if verizons is like sprints it eould be under settings-> more settings-> mobile networks and switch it from cdma/lte to cdma

Argh....I flashed back to stock, and still no 4G. I even took the SIM card out for a few minutes and reseated it. This is frustrating. I checked my other phone, the trusty old Thunderbolt and it has 4G. I thought that there may have been an issue since we had heavy storms, but if that old clunker gets it, then the SG3 should. Also, mom came over with her Nexus and her 4G is working as well.

Hello All,
I am among the many having signal issues with OPO.
But I have noticed that the signal is very stable on HSPA+ when I am constantly using the phone or just pinging from it for that matter.
But as soon as it goes IDLE, I lose connection very easily and get no service for hours sometimes until I realize it.
So is there any way to tweak android settings to always stay on HSPAP / HSPA / HSPA+ or HSUPA connection.
Whether its some hidden menu like the samsung devices or build prop tweak.
Thanks guys.
download LLama and there are settings for network. you can create a rule for it to stay on H+ or LTE
Or use Xposed and Intelli3g
Thanks will report back
