Negative. In order to mess with that stuff you would need root and wifi tether apk on the market..

You have to be rooted buddy. Which Android OS are you currently running? If you're running 2.3.3 aka Gingerbread all you have to do is flash ClockworkMod recovery, then flash any rooted ROM of your liking.
If you're on 2.2.2 aka Froyo, all you need is Superoneclick. This is know as the one click root method.

You just have to go into Settings>Wireless&Network>USB Tethering
I think that's how get into enabling WIFI tether. I use MIUI Launcher so its a bit different.
I have just flashed the gingerbread rom in one of the sections in the G2X forum section. And I have the 2gb data plan. I'Ll give it a try later. Thanks for the info.

So once your phone is rooted, you can tether without being charged by T-mobile?

He has no idea what he's talking about. That makes no sense..
Tethering is free. At least on my plan..
I tether all the time and have never been charged extra. Rooted and unrooted.

On a CM7 based rom tethering and hotspot are available in the settings, otherwise there's a root only app in the market that will let you do both.
Neither option involves paying extra

I have rooted my Verizon Galaxy iii and trying to get two differnet wifi tether apps to work but they fail. Has any one got this to work? Or this isnt going to work until some breaks they lock? Thanks in advance.... I have looked around but have not seen any tether posts.

Working fine for me.
Try FoxFi (available on the market) - doesnt require root.

Hello all! I recently got a Droid Ultra and I am costumed to using Wi-Fi tether on my Droid Razr. I had it rooted and used PDA Net Wi-Fi tethering. I paid for it and it was well worth it. I wasn't able to get the Wi-Fi tethering to work on my Ultra, only the USB tethering. It looks like we need root for tethering. Has anyone found a solution for Wi-Fi tethering on the Ultra?

Hi,
You might want to look at this thread:
[MOD][4.4.4]Native Tether for Build 23.3.24

It should work without root.

Have you used this method? It sounds so easy and to good to be true. Does the Ultra not have a built-in recovery to make backups with? Sorry for all the questions I just want to be careful. Thanks!

No, I haven't, because I live in Europe and we have no tethering restrictions.
It should be safe, as you only need to modify/replace the build.prop, which can easily be reverted, if you back it up beforehand.
But I replied a bit hastily, I haven't read the thread carefully, you need to be rooted for doing that (or have unlocked bootloader with TWRP installed).
I don't know if there are any other methods, which doesn't require root.
What's your build version?

I am currently not rooted. I don't think there is a great root option for the Droid Ultra on 4.4.4. I was hoping I didn't need root for the tether.
You can gain root, but not an unlocked bootloader (no custom roms/backups, etc). Once rooted, find and download the entitlement exploit to tether. I'm using it daily and it works fine.

What is the easiest/best root method for the Ultra?
Just check out RootJunkie's youtube tutorial, follow it to the letter. Not easy, or quick, but it works great IF you follow his directions.

I still have the Verizon OG unlimited data plan. Has the native tethering been accomplished with the Pixel2?

Are you bootloader unlocked? If so refer to this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/how-to-disable-carrier-tether-check-t3701836

I bought my wife the Google version Pixel2. I would get myself one if the native tethering was possible. It's been some time for me dealing with phones. I'm currently rocking my rooted Note2. :/

To confirm what enzyne said, if you have a Google Pixel 2, follow instructions at link shown. Root with Magisk and install module. Works for me and I have Verizon UDP.
